i feel like people a lot of the time don’t remember that haymitch always had a hand in the rebellion. in the words of suzanne collins, he was always waiting for someone like katniss to come along. that’s what kept him alive all those years after snow murdered his loved ones.

Well, i am basically using my tumblr to post one (1) fanart every decade. Fun. But yeah, recently i've got a big fixation on the hunger games and i just had to get this image for this particular moment out of my head into the world Surpised, how this exact (admittedly absolutely heart-wrenching) part of the whole book series stuck with me - and i have a theory. For starters, yes, Peeta's character is literally my favourite, the bread boy is THE boy ever. So obviously it was quite hard (in a good way) to read the books after his dramatic turn... But omfg that's actually such a genius and gut-punching narrative move!!! Seeing his character in this state really makes you miss pre-brainwashing Peeta and better feel what really MADE his character - and not only his!! Katniss starts to understand it too. She recognizes that she is missing the perspective that Peeta had of her, that she took it for granted at a certain point. Katniss feels, that with this loss of Peeta's idea of her, she doesn't have that "loved" part of herself anymore, that she is indeed just a selfish, pragmatic and cruel person focused only on survival. Even if it's not objectively true - for her it's true at the moment because of how dramatic the loss and how drastic the turn Peeta's character took. AND THEY ARE ALL STILL 17 y.o. CHILDREN OMG THAT'S SO SAD IT'S UNREAL. And genius. I was emotionally destroyed and I wanted to keep reading

Imagine thinking this and then spending two more books wondering if you're in love with this person or not.
She doesn't want to lose him, she doesn't want anyone to be watching them when she tells him how she feels, she stops caring if they get food or not even though that is the only reason she was doing this, and she doesn't want to stop kissing him despite her aversion to people she doesn't care about touching her.
Katniss spends the rest of this series straight up gaslighting herself into thinking she isn't in love with him when it's been clear since page 297 that she is head over heels.

I fascinated by the symbolism and imagery of the birds in the hunger games books. It fits the story very well and is actually very poetic.
Therefore, I would like to portray Katniss not only as a mockingjay symbol in a figurative sense of a bird, but also as an actual bird-like fantasy or even mythical creature, straight from a fairy tale. And it may not be a good old fairy tale, but children still need to hear it and learn the lesson.
"The Swan Princess"/ "Tsarevna-Lebed" by Mikhail Vrubel. 1900 and Katniss Everdeen as The Mockingjay

i'm gonna start being mean. if you have enough understanding for katniss's depression then how are you calling katniss's mom selfish for her response to her husband's death. you do understand what catatonic depression is right? you understand that she didn't purposely abandon her children?

“I had a dream, though,” I say, thinking back. “I was following a mockingjay through the woods. For a long time. It was Rue, really. I mean, when it sang, it had her voice.” “Where did she take you?” he says, brushing my hair off my forehead. “I don’t know. We never arrived.” I say. “But I felt happy.” ... Peeta pulls the chain with the gold disk from around his neck. He holds it in the moonlight so I can clearly see the mockingjay. Then his thumb slides along a catch I didn’t notice before and the disc pops open. It’s not solid, as I had thought, but a locket. And within the locket are photos. […] “Your family needs you, Katniss,” Peeta says. My family. My mother. My sister. And my pretend cousin Gale. But Peeta’s intention is clear. That Gale really is my family, or will be one day, if I live. That I’ll marry him. So Peeta’s giving me his life and Gale at the same time. To let me know I shouldn’t ever have doubts about it. Everything. That’s what Peeta wants me to take from him. ... He puts the chain with the locket around my neck, then rests his hand over the spot where our baby would be. “You’re going to make a great mother, you know,” he says. ... As I drift off, I try to imagine that world, somewhere in the future, with no Games, no Captiol. A place like the meadow in the song I sang to Rue as she died. Where Peeta’s child could be safe. ....

THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY PART 2
❝That what I need to survive is not Gale's fire, kindled with rage and hatred. I have plenty of fire myself. What I need is the dandelion in the spring.❞ ― Suzanne Collins

no bc think about it. we went from writing about things like violence and love to creating plays about these topics and having actors act them out, which sometimes resulted in the actors suffering quite a bit (for example, the time that some random dude accidentally got stabbed with a real knife during a showing of "othello"). nowadays we have movies with these topics, and many actors go through physical and psychological pain because of what we expect of them and their performances (for example, the girl who played the og dorothy in the wizard of oz, how women and girls in acting are often sexualized, toxic body images, also toxic masculinity in some ways).
the point i'm trying to make is that we, as a society, crave entertainment that incorporates these topics (love, war, sacrifice, grief, assault). and we want that entertainment to feel real. so who's saying, that ten years from now, we don't turn into the society depicted in the hunger games? that we don't force people into situations, because we're sick of acting and want the pain and depression to be real? who's saying that we don't throw people like katniss and peeta into an arena and make them murder each other because we crave real entertainment?
and who's gonna say that we won't enjoy it?

For a series who’s media/pop culture obsession centered so heavily around the supposed ‘love triangle’ aspect- the hunger games movies really cut out most of the books’ actual love story
Like I feel like they cut out almost all of the important moments of katniss and peeta falling in love from the books and *for what*?? (like we could’ve gotten them being all oblivious/crushing on each other before the first arena, all that time in the cave, ofc all those moments in d12 before the quarter quell announcement, their picnic on the roof before the quarter quell, THE BOOK, I could go on)
Bc the hunger games *is* (among other things ofc) a love story- so why not emphasize it in the movies?? I mean they clearly wanted to bank on the romance element why not do it right

After the first Games (CF Chapter 1)
I hunt. He bakes. Haymitch drinks. We have our own ways to stay busy, to keep thoughts of our time as contestants in the Hunger Games at bay.
After the War (MJ Chapter 27)
We learn to keep busy again. Peeta bakes. I hunt. Haymitch drinks until the liquor runs out, and then raises geese until the next train arrives.
