Simon has been developed offscreen in the World of Darkness (specifically with M:TA Technocracy and H:TR parts, in a fictional Michigan town) and currently (through game fuckery, my ST jumps around game settings and systems) resides in a post-apocalyptic cyberpunky future reminiscent of the Judge Dredd universe. His MegaCity is in the Los Angeles territory and used to be called New Angeles until it was taken over by its new owner.

There's a lot of story that happened for this but this MegaCity is now a post-scarcity utopia, and trying to set a positive model for the rest of the continent's Cities so that they might adopt the same systems and improve quality of life for their inhabitants, too.

Simon's role in this is, through is VR Gaming company, trying to prepare Gamers for the next apocalypse on the horizon and teach them the skills necessary to survive outside of their MegaCities should the worst come to pass. It's been wildly successful. Ask him about it!

(A/n): Sorry this took so long, as said before Arlecchino is a bit hard to write for

❌ The Knave had a very busy schedule, with her running the house of the Hearth to other Harbinger obligations, so why is she in Monstadt collecting mist flower corolla?

❌ It started in the most unlikely place, a tea party between Furina, Neuvilette and her

❌ Though you were quiet throughout the meeting but she felt a divine presence, similar to the presence she felt whenever she’s near the Tsarita yet different and more powerful

❌ Her second interaction with you was during her second meeting with Furina with the traveler in Neuvilette’s place. Grilling into the hydro archon she asked about her escape plan for when the prophecy came to fruition

“She don’t gotta explain shit!”

❌ Those were your first words to the Knave, brash and crude. The complete opposite of what she had expected them to be

❌ She won’t lie in saying that she’s a bit disappointed in how her first meeting went out, perhaps she shouldn’t have pushed as hard as she did. She still doesn’t agree with Furina’s seemingly lack of action but if she has your support then she’ll back off

❌ The next time she interacted with you was after the prophecy was fulfilled. The salty breeze whips around her and the traveler, the idle chitchat around her was dulled in her mind by your voice

“I’m not going to stop you, you can take the gnosis to Snezhnaya.”

❌ She initially expected a fight, but your words took her by surprise

❌ Not only that you aren’t going stop her, you also gave her your approval for her and the Fatui’s mission

❌ Maybe she was wrong about you

❌ A few days later she sense the familiar divine presence

“Hey babygirl.”

❌ “Babygirl?” She did hear you call other vision users that, whatever it is she’s glad that you aren’t still mad at her as you were during the tea party

❌ After some talk she brought the traveler with her to her meeting with the Iudex to discuss some things

*gasp* “babygirl!”

❌ That word again, maybe it’s a term of endearment that the divine uses, if that’s the case then she’ll wear it with pride

“Bye hydro daddy~”

❌ The day went on without much trouble until the battle for Filliol and Nanteuil’s freedom commenced. Arlecchino was thankful that you didn’t talk much throughout the fight because she doesn’t know what she would do if she was caught off guard by one of your comments

❌ Bringing the traveler in her domain she walked towards them but stoped when she hears a moan and you saying

“I love a woman who can kick my ass.”

❌ A blush crept up on Arlecchino’s face, she’s flattered but she wouldn’t dare raise a hand towards the divine creator even if you wanted her to. The fight carried on with more of your commentary

“Damn this family is more dysfunctional than mine’s, and that’s saying something!”

❌ If Arlecchino was taking a sip from a drink she definitely would have spit it out, she’s supposed to be threatening and now she’s doesn’t know if she should laugh or cry

❌ Whatever the she should do the rumors about you are true, you seem to can’t take anything seriously

hey something for my muts rq.

i try to be friendly but my social battery is also extremely small. i like writing a lot, but it's just another truth that i'm simultaneously pretty antisocial and hate 1-1 convo most of the time. it stresses me out and obliterates my focus. i genuinely don't have a lot of patience for prodding or online small-talk and would genuinely prefer if people just either immediately got to the point with anything they wanted from me (plots or muses) or at least talked in the replies/thread tags/my inbox so i can get to things at my leisure, rather than constantly dm with live commentary and expect me to dm back on every single thing i receive.

i'm not trying to make things personal, and i'm likewise a zero expectation rper in return. i don't care if you don't talk to me through any kind of DM for months, idc if you're busy and aren't active on tumblr and don't rp with me for a year, but still have every genuine intention to pop into my askbox or vice versa once in a while. it's fine. we're adults with other hobbies and jobs and a lot of my extremely long-time mutuals are like that, and i appreciate them very much.

but i've had people get frustrated and passive aggressive with me because i'm slow or sometimes absent, either in dms or ic, and i feel the need to reiterate that not only do i frankly hate talking because it disrupts my focus, but i also do have weak eyes that strain and ache very easily in front of any kind of screen, so i only get a certain amount of imaginary 'hp' that i can choose to spend either chatting or writing, which, again, most of the time i'd prefer to do the latter. i'm not blaming anybody in particular for anything, and i do understand that some people worry there won't be a relationship if they don't maintain social contact, but it's not the case with me. i'm a social cactus, i barely need anything to survive.

so i guess what i'm saying is nobody be too upset if i tend to focus on ic over ooc when i'm around. ik people have differing opinions about rp and being around to 'make friends and not just write,' but in my case, while i don't want to ever come off as outright hostile or inhospitable, i do ask for people's understanding on this. i don't have a lot of time or social sanity to spare, please don't get upset, but also don't ever worry from your end. if we're still mutuals, i promise my interest in you.

High-Context Culture at Play and Kim's Mode of Communicating // a rant

So, something I notice once in awhile when I go through the tags on Ao3 for KPTS fics are commentary on the lack of communication in the show—specifically, how Kim doesn't communicate. Tags such as, "Kim communicates, it's a miracle", "OOC because they actually communicate", "Kim uses his words", "Healthy Communication, so it's OOC", etc etc.

This isn't meant to call anyone out and mind you, this isn't something I've only seen in the KPTS fandom; tags like these are also used in a lot of danmei fics I see, as well as the sheer variety of anime/manga fics I've read in my time.

And ngl, when I see those tags...my gut reaction is often to feel that they sound very much tongue-in-cheek and somewhat mocking. Not just to the character himself, but to the narrative itself. It's a bit uncomfortable at times, reading those kinds of tags, even if I know to myself that there's likely no malicious intent behind it.

For what it's worth, I won't apply bad faith arguments on works of art and creativity, and I'm certainly not looking to police fic on Ao3, yknow?

Having said that though and just because I have yet to see a post talking about this topic explicitly, I also feel that it's important to some degree to understand how people communicate in Thailand, and Asia in general.

Mind you, I’m no expert in Thai culture, lemme repeat that yet again. They have unspoken social rules that I myself wouldn't understand because I'm not Thai, nor do I speak Thai. Asia at large, though sharing a unique set of many similar values, is not a homologous region; each country has a rich tapestry of history and culture and very much different from one another.

Yet, as someone who grew up in an Asian household who shares many of said values, I often feel like—when it comes to East Asian/Southeast Asian fictional characters at large—there has always been an unconscious, almost knee-jerk habit I often see in fanfiction to reshape their style of communication to a more western context, if that makes sense. As someone who used to translate doujinshi and Pixiv 小説 for fun, it was always noticeable and a bit jarring, once I moved over to read my fanfic of choice, yknow.

This isn't inherently or purposefully malicious in any way, but it can feel very dismissive, even if it's unconsciously done.

Thailand and most if not all of SE Asia operate in a high-context culture. High-context culture means that when we communicate, it’s not always so much the words themselves that matter, but the context surrounding those words: body language, tone, eye contact, a person’s social status, etc etc. The words sometimes only convey part of the intent, but it doesn’t convey everything. In some situations, the words themselves can even mean the exact opposite of what they’re trying to convey.

It's why so many misunderstandings happen between international fans on platforms like X, because the nuance is often lost in Google Translate.

On the other end of that, we can use Tumblr as the example: since this is mostly an English-speaking website, for the most part, this hellsite operates on a low-context culture, but is easily ignited with outrage based on seemingly high-context traits. LOLOL

This type of communication is not always easily translated into the subtitles, nor is it remotely perfect in any way. It can be quite complex, and hell, even in the context of its own culture, misunderstandings can and do happen all the time. And, as we've seen from the recent popularity boom of East Asian media from the past two or three decades to the American and western audience at large, some of the most compelling drama can come from these sorts of human error.

Besides that, if I’m being perfectly honest, almost always (one of) the source(s) of fandom drama when it comes to character interpretation is due to the nuances of the high-context culture the story takes place in that can have the loudest enthusiasts arguing back and forth.

This is particularly true for characters like Kim Theerapanyakul, who are meant to be portrayed as mysterious and unreadable.

(Lan Wangji and Hyakuya Mika are also a few that comes to mind in my personal experience, uh huh)

To be quite frank, it's why I personally avoid getting into any nitty gritty discussion when it comes to characters like Kim and LWJ, because they mean so much to many different people, as well as simply for the fact that I do not know everyone's emotional tolerance when it comes to disagreements. Lol What I'm saying right now can be taken to be hard-hitting fandom policing, when I'm really trying hard not for it to sound like that, nor is it even my intent. I'm not telling anyone that they're wrong or that they've misinterpreted the characters, but what I am saying, is that people in fandoms, especially for the English-Only Speakers at large, need to be more consciously aware of their cultural biases.

And before I go on, mind you, it’s perfectly okay to have cultural biases—we all have them, myself included, that's just a fact of life. No one is exempt from this, if anyone is itching to point fingers.

I don't think it's an unreasonable thing to say that if one is engaging in media that's not from their cultural context, it's good to be more aware of the surrounding cultural norms and values of that said piece of media when you apply your own interpretation to it, and especially when you may not be the intended audience.

It’s why “your headcanons are not my headcanons” is, I will always believe, a very good rule to adhere to, especially when peeps disagree with popular headcanons, so fandoms can be more respectful and tolerant of each otherrrrrrr when disagreements inevitably crop upppppp, but anywayyyyyy~

I’ve met enough expats who’ve lived abroad in my current line of work to say that trying to understand the unspoken social rules, norms, values, etc. of the foreign country they choose to live in is most often one of their biggest sources of frustration. Alas.

And, as a side-note: high-context cultures are in no way superior to low-context cultures. Both modes of communication have their pros and cons, and molds society in various different ways.

But I digress! An example of the high-context culture at play is the break-up scene in front of Kim's apartment, which I've seen a number of fic authors portray as a genuine apology from Kim:

Which—in terms of what was spoken, Kim did say he was sorry.

But let’s think about the context of the apology: he said the words as he was walking away, before pulling his arm from Chay’s grasp. He looks back at Chay coldly, and overall, his behavior is dismissive; from his body language alone, he portrays a picture of aloofness and treats Chay as an annoyance.

What he says is an apology, yes—but it's an apology with no sincerity whatsoever. It's why Chay broke down as hard as he did, because it's not just Kim's lies that had him reeling, it was the fact that in the context of how Kim dismissed Chay during that scene, it also heavily implies that nothing between them had ever been sincere. Kim completely reverses the understanding that Chay had of their friend/relation-ship and cuts it off completely.

And although what I'm saying may come across as "Duh, that's freakin' obvious," I also want to add another point: Kim would know the implications of what this non-apology is. He would understand the context in which he'd said those words. Whether he chose to regret them or not later on is up for debate, but it's interesting to see whenever fic authors use this scene as an excuse that Kim genuinely thought he apologized, just because he said the words out loud.

Do you see what I mean? In that scene, the canon's context is what matters, but I've seen enough fic where that scene is turned on its head and fic!Kim thinks and excuses himself, portraying the scene to somehow mean that it's the words that matter. The nuance is thus lost, so in turn, the emotional weight of that scene is also disregarded.

This is what I mean when I say that there is an unconscious habit some fic authors have in changing the communication style that the show is set in.

Because the reality is, Kim didn't apologize. He knew he didn't, and Chay most certainly knew he didn't. What he was communicating in that scene was entirely different from what an actual apology entails.

Be that as it may, the audience knows that the non-apology doesn't negate what he and Chay went through together in the show. He may have been lying to Chay for the majority of the story in regards to his involvement in the mafia, but it doesn't mean that the love and adoration he feels for Chay through his actions didn't come through. Kim may not have said much to Chay besides singing for him a (stolen) refurbished version of his own song, but it doesn’t mean that his intent wasn’t conveyed. It's why Chay cried the way he did, in that in some way or another, the song Kim sang is a reminder of everything that happened between them did have truth to it.

Just because they communicate in the way one may not be used to or unfamiliar with (especially in the low-context culture that countries like the US, Canada, Australia, etc. operate in), doesn't mean that they're not communicating to one another.

Healthy communication doesn’t always have to just mean “straightforward meaning in the words.”

When tags like the ones I mentioned earlier in this rant inevitably crop up, especially when it comes to characters who are non-American/British, one can't help but feel that their canon mode of communication is being mocked and made to be seen as inferior.

In which case, TL;DR, when one writes tags like these about certain characters, I sincerely hope that their cultural biases are in the forefront of their mind, and they're aware and humble enough to admit that there are some things that they may not understand in terms of the cultural context. And due to the fact that they do not understand it, hopefully not mock it in response.

📡 _a/n. really hope the genshin fandom treats me kindly. first genshin post, so i’m posting for the cryo vision holders because they’re ICONS. simple post bc why not? also, haven’t played since early 2022 so apologies if these are ooc/conflict w canon!

chongyun

— the purely positive yang energy filled exorcist chongyun is quite the fan of the spoken tales of liyue, so oftentimes he’ll ask you to come along with him when he knows you have the time.

— he may invite you to the library or anywhere else that stores or rehearses stories, but most times he’ll bring you along to listen to the stories of iron tongue tian at third-round knockout, where you both may find yourself immersed in the story within minutes of its start.

— every now and then, he’ll casually whisper to you some commentary in regards to the story, asking for your’s as well. though, some random thoughts might end up mixed in as well. ‘i wonder if this really is based off a true story,’ and ‘ah, wait, i ran out of popsicles..’ are just some of the phrases you may hear.

— though, sometimes between the two of you, it’s just plain silence as you listen to the words of the storyteller before you. not that it’s any issue, it’s a comfortable silence and you know for a fact that you’ll end up indulging in long commentary and critique when the story is done.

— but if you turn your head to face him, it’s clear to see how much he enjoys this time spent, especially since it’s time spent with you.

— whenever ganyu gets a break off a work, she particularly likes to spend her free time at wangshu inn. and, when she knows that you’re free too, she finds it in herself to invite you to spend time there with her.

— frequently with you, she loves to just relax and engage in conversation with you, about just anything really, as she drinks some water in a tea cup and offers to get you your preferred beverage. every now and then she might unconsciously bring up work, so don’t hesitate to remind her that this is her time off.

— on a slightly separate note, she may also ask you for advice on random subjects, like clothing to wear and starting a garden. she’s rather unsure about these sorts of things herself, at least on how to start, so she appreciates all sorts of input. even if it leads to her failing miserably, she still wants your opinions.

— all in all, she just really appreciates having a nice and relaxing conversation with you, it truly does put her mind at ease knowing your opinions and thoughts on certain topics. the qilin might also even vent her frustrations with you, and allow you to do so as well. knowing what’s on your mind seems to soothe her all the same.

kaeya

— calvary captain kaeya quite enjoys spending time in taverns, spending more time there than he does at the knights headquarters. though if you don’t like the atmosphere? he’s fine with that as well, hanging out just outside and sitting down on a bench to enjoy his favorite wine, and for you to enjoy your own preferred beverage.

— most of the time it’s random small talk, though it’s also just a sort of ‘go with the flow’ sort of thing, if you get that. he might ask you about your time in mondstat, or if you’re strong enough ( especially if you have a vision ), he’ll ask if you want to join him on his knightly excursions. though he really just wants a lesser load, it’s nice to fight alongside you as well. if you’re up for it.

— though he won’t invite you if it’s particularly dangerous, he’s still sure to tell you all about it, whether through an elaborate and possibly exaggerated tale or a dramatized complaint of the overwork. he might not be able to tell you some bits, due to having to keep things private for the knights of favonius, but he’ll tell you whatever he can mention, if you’re interested.

— back on the topic of random conversation, he actually gossips quite a bit with you about whatever it is he happened to overhear that particular day. all in good fun though, unless you have any drama you’re willing to share, which he is ready to listen to, with commentary and everything.

— it was a bit hard to pin down exactly where she’d like to hang out with you, so taking inspiration from her story quest, most likely she’d take you around inazuma city, visiting various locations all the while.

— now, it’s not exactly the calmest of times to hang out with her, but she does her best to make you feel comfortable nonetheless. perhaps she may bring you to a restaurant to try the foods, or to ‘oruga textiles & kimonos’ to get some inazuman fashion advice.

— she might accidentally end up busying herself along the way, but not to worry, because whenever this is the case she promises to make it up to you, and make it up to you she does. at the end of every outing, she’ll invite you to kamisato manor, drinking tea and chatting away until it’s time for you to resign for the day.

Shameless DVD Commentary: Sleeping Beauty Syndrome

(I posted this idea for a Shameless DVD Commentary and I’m gonna do it for some of my own fics. If you’re a writer, I’d love for you to do this too! Consider yourself tagged if you’re interested!)

Summary - Ian comes down with case of Sleeping Beauty Syndrome. The only cure? A kiss from his true love.

Stats - I wrote this for Gallavich Week 2021, the theme was “fantasy AU”. Word count: 4,132. It’s a one shot.

What was the initial inspiration for your story? I struggled a bit with the theme for this, since I didn’t read fantasy AUs back then (this has changed now and I love them!). I came up with the idea of a fairy tale illness and decided on Sleeping Beauty Syndrome.

If the story is written from a character’s POV, why did you choose this character? I think it had to be written from Mickey’s POV and Ian had to be the one with SBS because I think it would be far too easy the other way around. Ian would have no problem finding a way to kiss Mickey if he had SBS (he’d been sneaking into the Milkovich house within seconds). With Ian having it, there’s some tension as early seasons Mickey would struggle with something like this. I hope it doesn’t come across too OOC for this point in canon but I do think Mickey would help save Ian - I feel it is similar to the s1 scene where Ian runs to Mickey because he’s upset and then Mickey goes to be with him.

What was your favourite scene to write? I really enjoyed writing Ian waking up and that realisation that Mickey had saved him.

How did you come up with the title? I find titles really hard so this was just the title of the syndrome 😅

Are there any little moments or references you hope readers will notice? I hope people like the description of Ian waking up, I find describing things hard so I hope it comes across how I imagined in my mind.

Was there anything you struggled to write? If so, how did you overcome this? I always struggle with writing anything dramatic and angsty. So, writing Mickey as being very conflicted and very scared but ultimately overcoming this to save Ian was a struggle and I hope it came across as being true to him as a character. But even if it’s a bit OOC, I think that’s ok because it’s a fantasy AU 😅

Favourite line in the story? The last one! “Yeah, I’d wake up.” Because it’s Mickey admitting to Ian that he loves him without actually saying it.

Did the storyline change in any way as you wrote the story? No, I knew I wanted it to go a certain way as soon as I came up with the initial idea.

If you are writing a particular trope or genre, was it your first time writing this? Yes. First time writing fantasy. And I hadn’t read any fantasy AUs for this fandom so it felt like a challenge to write this. I’m not hugely into fantasy in terms of shows/movies but I was into Buffy for years. And I feel like reading this story back, I can see some influence from Buffy (maybe some vague elements of Earshot and Hush) but I wasn’t thinking about the show when I wrote this.

What are you most proud about in the story? (plot, characterisation, dialogue, twist/cliffhanger, etc) I think I’m just proud of writing a genre I’d never tried before. It was a challenge and I love the concept of a fairy tale syndrome and how it leads to Ian and Mickey becoming closer.

Are there any deleted scenes that didn’t make it to the final story? Yeah, I had a scene where Fiona and Lip talk to Ian after Mickey leaves but I felt it didn’t really work to finish the story there so I took it out. And I like that it finishes with Mickey talking to Ian.

Are there any ‘behind the scenes’ info you’d like to share - e.g. what’s going on in a characters head in a certain scene or how you came to write a certain line? When Ian wakes up and learns what’s happened, it’s one of the happiest moments of his life. After the fic ends, they definitely make out a lot and only stop when Fiona comes back in to check on Ian.

Reading back the story now, is there anything you’d change or add? Maybe I would have expanded it a bit more. I think I always struggle with fleshing things out. Perhaps Mickey could have taken longer to go to Ian or Fiona had been much more reluctant to let him in (and demanding more information about Mickey’s relationship with Ian) - to add more tension to the story.

Would you ever write a sequel to this story? Not a direct sequel but maybe a remix - another fairy tale syndrome/illness where Ian is the one to save Mickey. But I don’t have any plans or a clear idea about this.

Were you nervous or excited to post this story? Nervous but also excited! Purely because it was something so different than what I usually write. So I wasn’t sure if it felt really OOC or if the concept was boring/not really fantasy.

Did you have a beta or a friend who helped you as you wrote? No. I don’t use a beta (I probably should as I’m sure it would be useful!)

Anything else you’d like the readers to know about the story? This is one of my favourite stories I’ve written because I think the SBS concept is fun and I still liked it when I read it back.

GENERAL INFO AND BLOG CANON:

This blog acts as the in-universe "official" page for Team Skull. It's run by Calla, who is considered the "head grunt" of the team. While it's supposed to be run as an official update account, she often uses it as a personal blog. More info on Calla can be found here and here.

While this blog is mostly gen, it's definitely more on the pg-13 side. Given the nature of Team Skull, there will be swearing, adult humor, and innuendo. If this makes you uncomfortable, feel free to block, I promise I won't get offended!

In the history for this blog, Team Skull reassembled about a year or so after disbanding, this time without any influence from Aether. They're back to just being a gang of goofy hooligans.

Should also note that this will more or less follow Sun and Moon's canon. I didn't particularly care for a lot of the plot changes in USUM, especially regarding Lusamine’s arc, so I'll be disregarding most of them.

While anyone is welcome to interact, I generally prefer other human characters over sentient pokemon. This blog follows the canon that pokemon are only slightly more sapient than real life animals, and Calla will assume most pokemon-run blogs are just people role-playing, and she's just playing along. (Whoa, meta!)

The above rule also applies to canon characters from other franchises/series.

Pelipper Mail is open and will be treated as if it was actually delivered via Pelipper (or other flying Pokemon)

RULES AND BOUNDARIES:

This blog is generally LOW-STAKES. While Calla may occasionally make commentary on higher-stakes events, please do not attempt to rope me into high-stakes scenarios without discussing it first. Absolutely no ultra/death-stakes. While mentions of death are fine and expected (such as in a backstory or in reference to agriculture/Pokemon as food) I prefer not to participate in it directly. I'm mainly using this blog for goofy fun-times, so please be considerate.

If you OR your character are a minor, absolutely NO flirty/romantic interactions. Friendly interactions and banter are fine and encouraged, but both me and my character are full-grown adults. This is a hard line to ensure everyone’s comfort and safety.

This one isn't a hard boundary, but I tend not to lean too far into things like fallers/alternate realities, Pokemon-human hybrids, etc.

☆ Overall, this blog's canon tends to be more on the realistic side. I started this blog because I loved the idea started by @/realpokemon of combining the whimsical Pokemon world with the mundane-ness of the real world, and the challenge of balancing the two. While a lot of blogs in the community lean into the more zany and fantastical side of Pokemon, I just personally prefer keeping things more in line with the mainline games but with a touch of realism more akin to the real world.

Being disrespectful toward people for having 'too many rules' or setting out their own boundaries. They have these things for a reason do not treat them terribly because of it.

SPAMMING me with IMs. I do not always have spoons to talk to everyone OOC. I do not always post things upon the dash in regard to this but when it happens it will be obvious as I do not respond right away to things.

Making fun of those (like me) who are NOT native speakers of the English language. I am prone to typos and strange grammatical errors due to this.

Being pushy for ships is not okay. I do not care if you ship a thing if we are not actively writing together do not expect me to be okay with shipping with your muse simply because /you/ ship the thing.

MUSE PREFERENCES: As funny as this is going to be, prior to picking up the sunshine Oni known as Arataki Itto, I mainly wrote assholes. So the fear that I am /not good enough/ at writing this precious Oni still sits with me. I wrote (and still write) an asshole from another fandom who can be found upon my mumu and prior to chucking him onto there he had, had more than one blog over the sixteen years I spent with him.

PLOTS OR MEMES: I am good with both. I am always happy to plot things out even if it is merrely barebones to get things going. Working up from there is always good with me. As for memes? If we are mutual status (or I follow your sideblog) you are welcome to catapult/launch/yeet/shoot/drop ect your muse onto me at any time.

LONG OR SHORT REPLIES: I prefer longer things but I am fine writing shorter replies if my partner prefers them. Hi! I absolutely love following all of your commentary, whether it be about d&d mechanics or ttrpg shows! I'm working through the Dimension 20 backlog. In one of the Adventuring Party episodes for Unsleeping City 2, the cast talked about their approach to inter-party romance, and that they avoid it for many reasons, but mainly because they are afraid of it pulling too much focus during play. This struck me as very different than CRs approach. (1/2)

Do you have any thoughts about the different approaches of these two shows to romances, and how that impacts how fans interact with the characters and ships? I don’t follow the tags for these shows usually, but it seems that CR has more fandom discussion and drama around ships, which may be more absent in D20 since romance between player characters isn’t usually an expectation. The hours of play also likely make an impact. CR has so many more episodes for relationships to develop. (2/2)

Thanks! Honestly your thought here kind of sums most of it up: a 400+ hour campaign simply offers opportunities for romances to develop that a 40-ish hour campaign does not. The only D20 campaign where I recall extensive shipping was A Court of Fey and Flowers, where that was kind of the point, and there were two clear frontrunner ships that were very heavily signaled and did not conflict with one another.

I don't follow the D20 tags or fandom in the same way I do Critical Role (also I am behind on Neverafter so no spoilers), so I can't speak much to shipping culture, but I do recall that the D20 cast has, as you've said, brought up romances. Some of it is again that it pulls time and focus they don't have. Critical Role can have a date between Beau and Yasha that lasts two hours of streaming time and it's a small amount of time in the scheme of things, whereas that would be an entire episode of an (at most) 20-something episode run in D20. Brennan however has also mentioned that he has a preference for PC/NPC romances simply because NPCs can leave in a way that PCs cannot. I suspect that just carried over to how the D20 Intrepid Heroes cast prefers to play. A lot of tables don't necessarily want romance between PCs! And when D20 has had it, it's either been an expectation the cast knew about going on for that specific series (ACOFAF), something agreed upon between the cast members prior to the show as an existing relationship (Mice & Murder; this is also true of EXU Calamity), or very much in the background/in the finale (Unsleeping City's fling between Pete and Rowan).

I suspect there might be a few other reasons:

Critical Role, quite early in the run of Campaign 1, had a character confess their love for another, so I think the expectation that romance is on the table has been set in this fandom from the start.

The unedited nature of Critical Role has I think permitted people to read into OOC moments differently than in other, more edited shows, and obviously video gives you much more than simply audio to work with (though obviously this isn't a factor for D20 vs. CR)

I could be wrong because again, while I watch/listen to a bunch of actual play, I don't participate heavily in the fandoms of those other shows, but I think people have preferences for specific cast members or cast dynamics for Critical Role in a way I haven't seen for other shows and I think that colors a lot of shipping discussions. (As for why this is true, I think it's a combination of the earlier, simpler accessibility of the cast on social media early CR vs say, D20 and NADDPod - the internet climate changed drastically between 2015 and 2018 - and the larger cast size and again, longer lengths of time. For reference; when Neverafter is complete, the intrepid heroes cast will have played 117 episodes together, and with episodes mostly in the 2-ish hour range this puts them at roughly half the runtime of Campaign 1 of Critical Role)

Hop/Gloria/Marnie (Pokémon SW/SH): Hop/Gloria is my main focus, just because I think their high energy (in my headcanons, anyways) play off of each other really well. I also like Gloria/Marnie for sunshine/serious. I also like Hop/Victor. I think about the Sw/Sh characters a lot.

Nemona/Juliana (Pokémon S/V): After 君と雨上がりを and Biri-Biri, they're canon. But also, you can't just ask someone to be your best rival like that!!!
