why do some popular things have such small fandoms, in your opinion? like, John Wick is incredibly popular but has less than 2k fics on ao3 and there doesn't seem to be a big fandom presence on tumblr. there's shows with 10+ seasons that have incredibly small fandoms as well.

i know not every fandom is going to be, say, Harry Potter or Supernatural levels (especially if it's an older show and fics have been lost to time- i've heard ER lost quite a lot) but it's just... odd to me, i guess.

The majority of things don't get fanfic fandoms.

There are some trends though. Certain genres are more likely to generate them than others. SFF is pretty likely. Crime dramas are reasonably likely, whether that's people slashing buddy cops on AO3 or lead canon het on FFN.

Incomplete-feeling canons are a bit more likely, usually due to plot holes or a crappy ending that people want to fix—but not so crappy that everyone just gives up in disgust.

Relatedly, things where the art part isn't too intimidating are more likely than ones where the big draw is that author's exact way of writing or the fantastically subtle and moving acting in some arty movie about social issues.

Serial media are way, way more likely to generate a fic fandom than one-offs, and having a certain number of hiatuses but not ones that are too long helps. You want some gaps where people have time to make stuff before it's instantly jossed, but you do need new canon to reinvigorate a fandom periodically.

Things just being well known by lots of people does help relative to a similar canon that few people saw, but exact audience size isn't the main factor.

Some tasty character dynamics help a lot. Maybe shippy, maybe more found family. A world that people want to play more with also helps. Even the gen-focused fandoms tend to care a lot about the latter two. They don't just write about any old canon. There have to be certain hooks.

John Wick does seem like it fits some of the standard criteria. There's more than one movie. It's fun, dumb genre stuff, not super high art.

TBH, having more than like 5 fics already means it's a success as a fic fandom, so part of it is just your frame of reference. I know you say you don't expect HP, but you should be expecting the norm to be way under 100 fics, not nearly 2k. That's part of it.

But I suspect the big reason is that a lot of people find the films relatively complete as-is.

They're set in the real world (-ish), so the setting isn't that interesting to explore with a bunch of OCs in the way that people write their own HP or Naruto casts. People like the lead, but I don't think they fixate on his relationships to other characters. (Checking AO3, it looks like some people are writing basically John/self, which makes sense.)

For much of the audience, it's all about watching him use a lot of guns. So many guns. All of the guns.

Once the big screen spectacle is done, I don't know that people really want more unless it's more action movies with more visual awesomeness.

IDK, I don't think I've seen any of these beyond some clips, so maybe I'm missing something.

When is Krisnix Week 2024?

What type of fanworks am I allowed to create for Krisnix Week?

You can create any type of fanwork that you wish. This includes but is not limited to: fan art, fanfiction, fan comics/doujinshi, fanmixes, fanvids, animatics, podfic, and more.

How should I share my work for Krisnix Week?

You can post your fanwork for Krisnix week on any platform(s) you wish. However, we recommend cross-posting or posting links to your creations on multiple platforms to ensure that as many fans see your work as possible.

If you are posting on tumblr, twitter, or instagram, we recommend that you use #KrisnixWeek2024 so that other fans are easily able to find it.

We have also created a collection on AO3 to host the works for the week.

Can I still participate even if English isn’t my first language and/or I don’t use the English localized names?

Of course. We want to celebrate and appreciate these characters in all their forms, whether they are being called Ryūichi Naruhodō and  Garyū Kirihito, Phoenix Wright and Kristoph Gavin, Chéngbùtáng Lóngyī (Naruhodo/Phoenix in the Chinese version), or  Krístofer Galvão (Kirihito/Kristoph in the unofficial Brazilian Portuguese localization). And in whatever language(s) you wish to share your appreciation for them. 

 Good art needs no translation, and I’m sure the shippers who speak your first language will be glad to have more fic in their native tongue. (Also  even English-only speakers  (like me) will sometimes brave google translate to enjoy a new work for their favorite ship).

What are the daily prompts? Do I have to use them? The optional daily prompts can be found here. There are three listed for each day. You can choose one, combine two or more--or ignore them entirely. You can also start with one of the prompts and then disregard it if inspiration takes you in a different direction.

For instance, the themes for the first day of the challenge are

Trust vs Betrayal; Partners (in Crime); & Supernatural, Horror & Fantasy.

Here are some, equally valid ideas of how you could incorporate these:

Krisix as werewolf hunting partners who betrayed each other at a critical moment. (combo of all 3 themes)

Phoenix is haunted by Kristoph's ghost after his death. (supernatural theme)

High School/College/University AU where Kristoph and Phoenix are dysfunctional lab partners. (loose interpretation of "partners" theme)

Do I have to participate in every day of Krisnix Week?

Absolutely not.  You can pick and choose which days you want to create for, depending on your schedule, creative inspiration, and level of interest.  Additionally, you can feel free to merge and combine multiple themes into one single creation!

Can I write something gen and/or incorporate other ships into my Krisnix Week creation?

Yes, we welcome gen works that explore Kristoph and Phoenix's unique dynamic as well as shippy and/or smutty works. Additionally, you are free to incorporate other ships (ex: klapollo, trupearl, etc) or to create a poly ship with Kristoph, Phoenix and a third-party. (ex: Kristoph/Phoenix/Ema).

However, we want to emphasize that Kristoph and Phoenix should really be of equal (if not greater) focus to any other pairings that you wish to incorporate in the fic. For example: A fic alludes to past/future/unrequited narumitsu but that ultimately focuses on Kristoph/Phoenix would probably qualify as appropriate for the event. Whereas a single allusion to past krisnix in a work that otherwise focuses on narumitsu would not count as a "krisnix work." (We encourage you to draw/write whatever you want--but maybe reconsider including a Krisnix Week tag).

Am I allowed to create NSFW content for Krisnix Week and if so, how can I share it?

Krisnix week is definitely open to all permutations/interpretations of the ship and their dynamic -in and outside of the bedroom.

Hi! I have a question that isn't exactly about fic recs, but I would really, really appreciate your opinion on this:

I've written several fics (I'm yet to post any of them) and they all hint at future drarry, but since they're set in the early Hogwarts years, nothing shippy really *happens* yet. If I tag the fics as drarry, will the readers be disappointed? Alternatively, if I *don't* tag as drarry, some readers might be put off by unexpected vaguely shippy hints. What to do?

I can only speak for myself and as a reader, I guess I’d prefer to see it tagged as Drarry if there are any shippy vibes or hints of future Drarry. One thing I’ve seen authors of Gen fics do is add a separate “pre-Drarry” tag which might be helpful to clarify things and set expectations for Drarry shippers? Those are my humble two cents on this but I’m curious to see what other authors think about it so I’ll invite them to share in the comments :)

Dear Yuletide Writer:

First off, thank you! I hope you are as excited about your assignment as I am to receive it. Hopefully the lateness of my Yuletide letter didn’t panic you too much! I enjoy a wide variety of fic, and these are truly some of my favorite canons, so really you can’t go wrong...but if you are looking for a spark of inspiration, I hope this letter provides it.  

General Likes/Dislikes: 

Things I love in a Yuletide fic: M/M, UST, hurt/comfort, banter, happy endings. When I look at the canons I chose, one consistent theme is that they all end on a note of hope, yet the characters I chose within these canons don't always get to experience that. I think, more than anything, what I would love to see is a chance for these characters to catch a glimmer of it for themselves (or for each other, in the canons where I've selected a pairing). 

Things I generally don’t like in a Yuletide fic: AU’s set outside of the canon setting (coffee shop, etc), MPREG, graphic gore, body horror, unhappy endings. That being said, if you have a wild idea that goes against these, these are definitely more loose guidelines than DNW’s.

Coldfire Trilogy

Damien Vryce/Gerald Tarrant Not sure if there will ever be a Yuletide where I don't request CFT fic. I do write frequently for this fandom, but just because I write in a certain style, please don’t restrict yourself to my “usual” topics. For this canon especially, I’m excited to read what you want to write.  I’m starting my millionth re-read of the trilogy, so I am excited to read anything set either during canon, or a post-canon fix-it. Give me all the banter. Give me all the UST. Give me Gerald Tarrant doing something kind (while doing mental gymnastics to justify it to himself as FOR SELFISH REASONS ONLY). Give me Damien forgetting to agonize over what GT is and just enjoying a moment with him (bonus points for him Prophet!fanboying). Give me physical contact of some sort between them, give me the soul bond! I ship these two hard, but I am happy to read pre-slash/gen.

Dimension20: Escape from the Bloodkeep

Leiland (Kraz-Thun) I watched Escape from the Bloodkeep 2 months ago(?) and once I was done, I immediately restarted it and watched the series again. Bloodkeep has some of my favorite Dropout cast characters, but of course it was Matt Mercer’s Leiland who stole the show for me. Someone on Reddit summed up Leiland as “All that dark power and regal lineage turned into a benny hill skit” and in response I can only say, that’s exactly why I’m here. I am happy with both pre and post-canon fic, gen or shippy (and not picky on ship). I’d really love to see Leiland navigate how to be Leiland, and not Kraz-Thun, and getting more comfortable in the “evil” found family he has created. Galfast Hamhead, while not requested, is of course 1000% welcome in any story.  Yoroiden Samurai Troopers (Ronin Warriors)

Shuten/Rajura

This was my first real fandom, well over two decades ago now, and Shuten/Rajura was my first ship. I definitely carried a binder plastered outside with the Masho chibi from Amanda Swiftgold’s page and stuffed to the brim with too much printed fic from Mink’s Yaoi Cake archive. This was a rare ship even then, and I am absolutely fine with gen, and fics that include all the Masho. I would of course love a fix-it fic, but I am open to exploring missing canon scenes also. I would enjoy a fic either from Rajura or Shuten’s perspective that grapples with their encounter out on the tracks, and that sprinkles in some of their shared complex history. Feel free to bend canon details in terms of what the armor enables.

Solya/Marek These two have taken up residence in my brain and will not leave me alone. They truly enable each other in a way that is absolutely toxic, but I would love a fic that lets them attempt to do better by each other. I would prefer that Marek lives in your fic, whether that means exploring pre-canon events, or a missing scene during their story, and I would definitely enjoy a fix-it (just think of the hurt/comfort possibilities!) where they get to figure out their version of a happy ending. How do they navigate a world where they both wield less power? Would they be able to make their peace enough with that to carve out something new? Or would they chafe against that lack of power, and it would be that struggle that entwines them further?

I wasn't able to finish writing anything for the 2-2-24 cause, so it seems like the least I could do was throw some recommendations for a few of my favorite Cody-centric fics into the ring to help celebrate. Enjoy!

Summary: A-017 turned and regarded him silently for a long moment. “You ask a lot of questions, Kote.”

“Is that a good thing or a bad thing?”

My Comments: Features a whole slew of precocious CC cadets dealing with the horror show that is Kamino, but Cody is the POV character for the first, longest fic in this multi-story series. Heartbreaking with a happy, hopeful ending.

First Choice (complete) by smilebackwards

Summary: The clones get to choose their Jedi generals.

My Comments: This series has three fics in it, and while the first one is Obi-Wan-centric, the next two are from Cody's POV. The first two are a bit more serious in tone, while the last one is basically Cody's brothers relentlessly trolling him.

Shippy Fics (nothing explicit, because those fics are between me, God, and probably some overworked Ao3 website volunteers):

Our Own Choices (WIP Cody/Obi Wan) by heartofroses112

Summary: CC-2224 made the choice. Cody had to live with it. The Commander... well, he was prepared to burn the galaxy down as penance.

Or, Cody decides to leave the Empire, but that doesn't stop his past decisions from haunting him. In the midst of trying to repent for the crimes he 'willingly' committed, Cody may very well start a rebellion against the Empire while he's at it.

My Comments: Can it really be called shippy if we're 88 chapters in and the tagged pairing hasn't actually laid eyes on one another? Anyway, Codywan is pretty clearly endgame, if that either is or distinctly is not your thing. I'm mostly here for my catnip, which is the post-Clone Wars clone rebellion angle.

Our Caches and Constellations (complete Cody/Obi-Wan) by johanneb

Summary: Eleven years ago, the Jedi order got wind of the closing pincers of a Sith trap and scattered to the remote corners of the galaxy. Ten years ago, millions of clone commanders and troopers were introduced as the Republic’s new Army, made for fighting a war alongside people the galaxy seemed to be forgetting ever existed. Nine months ago, Commander Cody decided he was no longer going to risk his men's lives for the whims of clueless generals. Now, his decision to save a boy and a man in the desert, and the plan he comes up with to get away with it, will change the galaxy.

My Comments: Cody quiet quits the Empire as a prelude to loudly quitting the Empire, which is a lot easier in an AU where all space flight and communications technology is steampunk-y and fairly slow. Very creative world building.

100% open to receiving some recs too. I know both shippy recs were Codywan, but I'm not actually all that attached to that ship over any other. Happy @codyday2224 everyone!

I agree with that zukka anti. Why is there this obsession with portraying kataang and zukka shippers as all sweet and innocent while only zutara shippers send hate? I don’t ship either of the popular ships in atla, but it’s really tiresome when people act like kataang and zukka shippers never stir up drama.

On Kataang, casual non-shipper enjoyers of a show will usually just be with the canon ships. Shipping canon relationships (where there is not explicit love triangle in canon) is usually considered to be a completely neutral thing. Just enjoying canon relationships is a normal thing for casual fans. This mean Kataang is associated more with casual fans as opposed to Zutara, which is non-canon, being associated with shippers and therefore toxicity. (Also, gen(ish) (non-ship focused) fics will usually include just the canon ships so Kataang has a lot of minor appearances in non-shippy fics. So gen fans are more likely (not guaranteed) to like Kataang)

On Zukka, a lot of people have been in the fandom for a while. Most ATLA fans tend to go in and out of the fandom. Before around 2020-ish there was no major toxicity associated with Zukka but a major one associated with Zutara. So when Zukka shippers starting beefing with Zutara shippers (whoever started it, I don't know. I wasn't part of that) everyone kinda assumed it was started by Zutara shippers who were already known for fighting the Kataang shippers. On top of that, a lot of Zukka shippers are multishippers which means things they do aren't as strongly associated with Zukka. If a Zukka shipper is fighting a Zutara shipper. They often ship another Katara ship like Kataang, Azutara or something. So the blame can be pointed towards a different ship. Zutara shippers often call Zukka shippers "straight women fujoshis" despite Zukka having a fairly queer fanbase. (Using straight as an insult to defend a straight ship from a gay ship doesn't look good). There has been a history of homophobia directed to shippers.

So people kinda consider Zutara the big problem because they are know for fighting the two big ships while the other two are only known for fighting them. This makes them look like the common denominator and hence 'the problem'. It's not that Zukka and Kataang are innocent they just have a better reputation than Zutara.

I've seen some of these around and thought I'd have my own go. As others largely have the shippy side covered and I've historically struggled to find good gen fic, I ended up deciding to make this list gen-only. This means that all fic included can be read as platonic regardless of tags.

That's not to say shippers won't get anything out of these though. Think of it as canon-typical levels of ship and that's about what to expect here.

Playing 3oT again has got me itching to write fic and I know I should get back to working on my long neglected WIPs, but I feel like I'm out of practice with the characters and such. So I wanna do some writing prompts as warm ups and get back into the swing of things!

We love to read them. We love to write them! That moment that hits a character like a bolt of lightning. When they meet someone new and in an instant know they're absolutely in love. Head over heels, twitterpated, flustered, cartoon cupids floating overhead in love. Names are exchanged and already somebody is hearing wedding bells.

Love is in the air and at your fingertips. So pick your favorite pair, or even randomly pair two people together and see how they handle Love at first Sight.

This being a very casual event, you can create whatever you want based off the prompt. Write a long fic or a short fic. Make it shippy or gen. Draw a sketch, or a comic, or paint a whole canvas.

I'm in a small (very small, AO3 tag has 50 works in it) fandom with a noncanon m/m ship I'm currently obsessed with, and which I've successfully seduced several other people into shipping and even writing a bit of fic for. But I'm still the one who wrote 99% of this ship's fic in the fandom. In their canonical interactions they come off as antagonistic, but mainly because one of them is a Jerk With A Heart of Gold type person so he's outwardly grumpy to everyone and has a lot of buttons that get pushed by accident.

And the thing is, these two characters are popular to write about and show up in many of the gen fics. And when they do, they very often read like they're secretly dating, or at the very least kind bantery in a way that comes off as flirty. Noticeably warmer than the kinda bristly still-getting-to-know-each-other canon interactions.

I don't think the authors were intending to write it as shippy or it even occurred to them - I think they were just extrapolating on what their dynamic would be like with a tiny bit more development - but I can't help but take it as vindication either way, hah! My ship is not canon, not fanon, but a secret third thing.

The Old Guard (heads up I'm a Booker fan...):

... Borders, what's up with that is a series of oneshots, mostly centered around Booker but also his relationships with the rest of the gang. some are canon compliant, some are not, it's equally split between shippy stuff and platonic gen stuff. can get whumpy and angsty and a little dark in some chapters so keep an eye on the warnings!

Will you stay just a little bit longer? is a modern human au where Joe is a single parent to 2 young kids and Nicky is his new babysitter but ooh will it turn into something MORE???? both fluff and hurt/comfort and lots of pining.

It comes and it goes in waves is an incomplete series of Booker finding Quynh and helping her after pulling her from the ocean. It only has two parts so far but they're both excellent.

Despondent is an au after the movie where basically Nile makes the gang take Booker back and it's all just. them figuring it out again.

Midnight call is another au after the movie where Booker has a nightmare and calls Nicky and Joe in the middle of the night during a panic attack, and when they go to see if everything is alright, they find Booker trying to put his life back together which just. freaks them out enough that they want to stay.

Achilles is post movie. Nile learns to live with being immortal and it's not. great for her. tw for mild self harm. hurt/comfort, team as family stuff though.

Now for A Discovery of Witches!

MiniM236 (@minim236) writes a lot of good ADOW fics, especially fics centered around Phoebe and Marcus, as well as Miriam and Baldwin (both as a ship and not).

'tis magic, magic that has ravished me is a great fic from the moment you see the tag "are the women ganging up on Matthew?" basically the fic goes "it makes no sense that one group of 9 people centered in Europe are responsible for the entirety of the magical world" and Matthew is baffled by it. it's great and the author is SO RIGHT it makes no sense that the world would work that way.

Unflappable (@butternuggets-blog) is Baldwin being stressed the fuck out and how other characters perceive that on him (or don't).

just plain embarrassing - matthew, marcus and baldwin play a game of paintball :)

HP Rec Fest, Day 20

I almost didn’t get this post ready on time but here we are for another @hprecfest day and I love today’s prompt! Some fandoms like Drarry are strongly driven by shippy feels and it’s easy to overlook great Gen fics. I rarely read them, but the G and T fics I’ve enjoyed have left a big impression on me. After allowing myself to rec popular smutty series yesterday I’m very happy to share two underrated comfort fics!

Tidings of Comfort series by @blamebrampton (G, 10k)

When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life. Luckily for Draco Malfoy, London has places where the tired can rest and recover.

BB is my go-to when I’m looking for top quality Gen fics - she’s written a total of 10 for HP and I can attest they’re all fantastic reads, charming, clever, creative and entertaining like few stories are. it was hard to pick just one but I chose by a) number of comments and b) Christmassy vibes. Tidings of Comfort (how brilliant is that title alone?) is an all-time favorite advent read when it comes to redemption arc. it has such a wistful evocative vibe, gorgeous religious refs and Draco and Harry’s voices are wonderfully mature and full of personality. their tentative reunion and existential conversations provide so much insight into their lives and background it’s crazy to think this series is just under 10k. I’m in love with the quiet and exploratory slow burn, cautious but full of promise; it becomes even more serendipitous due to the Christmas magic surrounding their encounter. a wonderful pre-slash read, sensitive and poignant, and a perfect treat for this holiday season!

my kingdom for a Rarry soulmate AU 😭 this trope fits the ship so perfectly and as always Ana kills me softly with the loveliest short fic. something about Harry’s tender longing for Ron hits me just right; his pov is very insightful and there’s a brilliant scene in which he analyses Justin that stayed with me for a long time (“He thinks of Sirius and his father, of how being raised in money makes it easy to believe that everything will always be taken care of” - what a quote!). I love his camaraderie with Ron and the way both romantic and platonic love are explored here - this fic gets into my favourite thing about Rarry which is the fact that Ron is “the first the first person Harry loved who loved him back.” I feel like that’s such a powerful yet overlooked aspect of their friendship and I love seeing it acknowledge here. the fic has also a creative take on Harry’s soulmark changing after the war which was really interesting and perfect angst material! I urge all Rarry lovers to go check this gem and give it a little love ❤️
