#omori three guardians au

hihi its been a bit! i saw a cool post online talking about a mirror dimension and thought of you and your writing skills…

ive been trying to make an omori au comic since forever ago, but i just can’t seem to be able to tell the story right. i know comics and fics are very different, but i still wanted to ask: how do you go about forming the plot lines for your stories?

Hi, Phrogs! Hope you've been doing well.

Breaking down my creative process... is a little difficult, because so much of whatever I do is based on feeling, but I'll try my best to convey my trains of thought (Can't guarantee they'll be novel/helpful, though).

At the end of the day, I am character focused at the core- this means plot developments are not written in a way where characters are meant to walk along at certain planned path, but rather that path is shaped according to the characters. At the beginning of everything I write, I pretty much do a case study of each character's psychology, but I guess in a hero's journey kind of way:

What do they want?

What do they fear?

What would cause them to change, and how would that affect them?

^^Those three questions are ones from the top of my head that I ask myself first and foremost. Then, I make sure the story gives them precise encounters with each of those items so that the character's balance between flexibility and stagnation can consistently be tested. Trying to write a plot ahead of the character is difficult for me, because I find that so many things where I might've been like "oh, that would be cool to have happen" end up not matching with how a character might have developed when that plot point would emerge. Additionally, thinking like this sort of gives characters greater life and autonomy, to me. You can kind of tell when a character is being thrown around to the whims of the plot- so it's nice to have them engaged and invested in whatever way possible.

Sorry for the elongated non-answer, but the best way I can summarize my thoughts is character development = plot. Pretend like you, the writer, are some sort of guardian meant to test your sweet little characters, then test them again, then push them to their limits, then find new limits that correspond with them overcoming whatever their trials were (or perhaps failing them, we love character regression too, that's still development).

You can fit that into whatever neat setting you've got planned, but it's important to me in my process to always have the major elements of the plot somehow be tied into something personal to the elements of the characters throughout the duration of the story- even if I have to reach a bit sometimes. If the overarching themes of the plot separate from the characters' own journey, then it sort of falls apart in its impact for me- so I always try to have the external plot line up with the characters' internal world and necessities of development.

I finally figured out a TL;DR right when I finished rambling out that last sentence:

My process for developing plot is that of a Saturday morning cartoon with 20~ min. run time. The characters need to learn a lesson? Well, give them a magical/roundabout alternate medium that acts as a vehicle, or perhaps even a parallel, of their experiences! By the end of their journey, that medium ties into their own struggles, as well as acting as an outside conflict.

Red Thread Of Fate AU where Basil and Sunny have a red thread that causes both of them to hate each other

Endspace AU where Headspace doesn't reset and everyone in it gets deeper character development and the three guardians + Omori become way more insistent on keeping Sunny asleep

Heartache AU (fanfiction lmao) where Sweetheart successfully makes Hero her "suitor" and Rococo and Spaceboy team up to save him and the rest of his friends (oh yeah and Mari technically. GIRLBOSS!!!!!)

Hello Hello! :D So, recently I came up with an Omori au which is centered around the three great creatures!! I guess I’m gonna be calling it the the three guardians au??  So, the general idea of it is that the three of them initially were tasked with helping Sunny be happy, and have his childhood be a good one. They were all initially created as imaginary friends, but once Sunny met The Gang (tm) they gained another function, also being there to help shape his dreams and make them nice so he sleeps well. 

The room that they’re in is some kind of meeting room that they all go to, one that Sunny can’t see into and doesn’t have access to. They move here when Sunny is awake through the many doors that only they can go into, and plan and come up with ideas for additions to the dreams, based on things that Sunny takes interest in in the waking hours of the day!! If you were wondering why their designs are more humanoid/smaller, its because they would change their forms to be able to go into the room easier. 

As for little tid bits of the designs and little backstories:

Cat: A mascot that Sunny saw a lot on various items during his childhood, including the calendar in the treehouse. It brought comfort to Sunny because he likes cats a lot. In the room, his form definitely shrinks a lot. Also, he never blinks, and stares kind of ominously a lot. While he likes and cares for the other guardians, his loyalty is STRICTLY with the Dreamer.

Humphrey: Obviously, based upon the book Hungry Humphrey that can be found in the hikkikomori route. Probably a book that Mari read to Sunny a lot when she was learning to read and he was very very young. The first imaginary friend and guardian to be created. As for his design in the au, I thought it would be interesting to base it off of a potential sailor that was present in the book, tying the design to the character a bit more. When it comes to attitude, he’s similar to how he is in game to where he is a bit lighthearted at times, likes making jokes and rhyming things out of nowhere, but he’s definitely different in the fact that he’s definitely not a “parasite within himself” yet. He’s much more stable I guess? Mostly because this au is more a prologue, and as the au progresses this absolutely changes. For relationships with the other guardians, he really cares about Abbi, but the Cat kind of unsettles him sometimes. Abbi: Taking much more creative liberty with Abbi, I decided that she should be based off of something that Mari and Sunny shared, a board game. I don’t know the specifics, but Abbi was based off of an octopus mascot of a trivia based board game that Mari really enjoyed, usually making Sunny and their parents play along with them. This is why Abbi looks slightly similar to Mari, seeming as the board game was more of something that was important to Mari, but Sunny cared so much about the time spent during it and with Mari that Abbi just kind of turned out that way. For a little design quirk, the tentacles look like they do in the main part of headspace, however when they are shrouded in darkness, just like every part of her, will look more like it does when she’s stuck in the Abyss. When it comes to how she acts, she’s very caring, but kind of blunt and a bit rude. Either way she loves and cares about the other three guardians and Sunny probably the most out of all of them. ANYWAY that's it!! I have many more ideas for this au, including comics and little doodles I wanna do but yeah! I hope you all like it!
