when Li Rong and Pei Wenxuan recognized each other on Day 1, Li Rong thought about how she preferred to play against Pei Wenxuan because Su Rongqing let her win.
Compare that first match against in the pagoda. Li Rong was already calculated and engaged from the first move with Pei Wenxuan vs absentminded, with no commentary on Su Rongqing's moves.
Su Rongqing offers a "comfortable" relationship, that doesn't push past the distant walls being in the imperial family have given Li Rong. He thinks she likes peonies and she never disabused him of that even as he filled her house with them.
Pei Wenxuan knows that Li Rong likes buttercups. He pushes for more from her. Li Rong enjoys sparring with him.
Su Rongqing doesn't know her, doesn't challenge her, and considers that an acceptable relationship. Treating each other politely like distinguished guests. For all that Su Rongqing wants to hold his higher social status against Pei Wenxuan, these noble social norms are part of why he's losing.
NOW?!
#anna watches cdramas#something something their spat while theyre running away from goons at the beginning. they have receipts on each other#even if they didn't meet at that party. they would recognize each other by the moves they made in town#srq came back and li rong started changing the entire timeline and he didn't consider?? baffling#maybe it's bc i'm too genre savvy and curse of knowledge blah but if you go back and have a Goal: saving ur fam#then you would plan based on shit you know is going to happen and then the princess immediately doesn't act according to plan#like YEAH i know it's a 40 ep and so he couldn't find out for 20 eps. but she clocked him! she had suspicions! the whole time! he didn't!#and another thing. how much longer did he live than they did? bc until otherwise i'm thinking like three days tops#oh? the monkey killed the two tigers on the mountain? great. there are 20 wolves at the door
