intro post for my new devil may cry oc, lorelei kane who’s here to mainly fuck shit up proverbially but also (eventually) fuck vergil literally! oh and small psa: i don’t know enough about the dmc universe because i only played 3 and 5, so i am doing what i always do in these situations - i’m simply making a whole bunch of things up! 

first things first, kane isn’t her real last name, it’s lorelei meraud, but kane are the initials of her ex-teammembers first names (kestra, aeron, nathaniel, esmond) which she chose in their honor when she ran away from home;

an ex trust fund kid, lorelei comes from an influental and very rich european family with a long lineage of politicians, religious leaders and notorious demon hunters. as the second daughter, she’s been trained to join her family’s demon hunter branch ever since she was a young child;

by the time she hits 18, most of her life has already been planned out by her elders and she basically graduates the program and joins a team of similarly trained youth. human demon hunters, unfortunately, don’t have a long shelf life, but as the teams almost never consist out of first born children, once they do die it’s widely considered by their families for the best, as they’ve served their use by then and honored their family name;

seven years after her graduation and team assignment, the worst happens and out of the five people on her team, lorelei is the only one who survives one of their contracts. burdened by nightmares, regrets and a case of survivor’s guilt, she refuses to join a new team, packs her bags and moves to the us, as far away from her family’s reach as possible. some of her cousins expect her to be back in a month, on her knees, begging for money and protection, but she never does so, and a full year after her departure she is basically forbidden from ever returning home;

she takes a job in customer service and although it’s a steep learning curve for her, she decides to take it slow and day by day, both relishing in the normalcy of her current situation and constantly itching for something more to happen lest she decapitates her manager (”fuck you clancy, i’m not sitting here a second more unless you pay me extra!”) one of these slower days;

she and lady are childhood acquaintances and through lady she catches up with the whole dmc crew, eventually! as this arc is set a little less than a year before dmc5 there’s some time to go through before she gets to meet everyone... but she does accept certain jobs through dante, part-time almost, just to scratch that growing itch. her only request is that she always goes in alone because she knows she isn’t stable enough yet to work in a team or lose another person on it;

she and dante really click well, and while she also gets along with everyone else, her and trish have a bit of a bad first (two dozens of) meeting;

🌹 “you don’t get it,” she sighed before turning towards him with a resigned smile. “it doesn’t get better, not for me - i am endlessly selfish with my suffering and will forever hold my failures closer to my heart than any victory.”

🌹 but he was a something she couldn’t let herself sink into, a liability she couldn’t afford now when she was so close to becoming the woman of her dreams.

🌹 “don’t misunderstand,” she took off her heartshaped sunglasses with a wink. “but i feel lovelier when i’m doing almost illegal things!”
