(Once again, this is @druidx trying to keep Fanfic on the correct sideblogs)
Above them, clouds scudded across the mint sky, a stiff breeze ruffling their clothes and Kyo's head-fronds. [Caseswing and Kyo] came to a stop beside the Oldwood tree, the cerise leaves tossing in the wind like an agitated fluffalo.
This is from Falling leaves (also needs a real title). I stopped writing it in October last year to do NaNo and didn't leave myself any notes so I'm trying to pick up the direction this one was headed in again...

OCs - Who the hell is: Princess Caseswing
(A short Original Character primer)
Universe:
Starbound
What do they look like:
Caseswing is a magenta novakid, around 1.75m (5'9") tall. She has large, spiky 'hair', and a star brand. She exclusively wears the Buccaneer's coat, hat and trousers, and a ragged cloak. (Please note: the brand is a star and not the monstrosity I ended up making in the Heroforge version)
What're they like?
Cheerful. Hard-working. Introspective.
Caseswing is chipper about everything. She enjoys exploring, adventuring, swashbuckling, carousing, and more recently, building.
She has a rather complicated relationship with her upbringing, which means she has trouble understanding other Novakid and why they do what they do. Her vernacular has taken some considerable shifts and Caseswing tends to emulate the vocal patterns of whom she's talking to.
One of the main issues her upbringing has left her with is a sense of alienation. Raised by glitch and trained by a hylotl, Caseswing often feels a sense of displacement. This is part of what led her to build the tenements she has, as a way of seeking to give a sense of placement and community to others like her. It also explains why her favourite song is an ancient human one, Wayfaring Stranger.
Her fighting style is very much about swinging into action and then retreating to slap on a bandage, which is a holdover from the training she received from the wandering hylotl scholar. Being less proficient with a gun, she treats ranged weapons as a matter of last resort but does enjoy using incendiary devices.
On occasion, she can turn introspective, which is a holdover from being brought up as a glitch. However, this isn't "think before leaping", but more like "think about the leap and what it led to, a couple of months later".
Who are the main important people in their life?
Fevertwinkle* - partner in planetary building
Cliptrim & Shaftsight - Parents
Starburst - Snugget
Can you give us a highlight reel of their life?
Born in space??? to Unknown???
Found and raised by Cliptrip and Shaftsight on Procyon Rift II.
Trained in her late 'teen' years by wandering scholar, Serene Kyo. Primarily in sword fighting, but also in archery, marksmanship, and hylotl culture.
Kyo left for a few years, then returned to complete his work mapping Procyon Rift II. Caseswing became his assistant while he mapped out the rest of Procyon Rift II, gaining a taste for exploration and adventure.
After Kyo completes his work and leaves, Shaftsight has the 'starbounder' talk with Caseswing.
Finally leaves home, with parents' blessing, with a passing crew of all novakids.
Hi-jinks, shenanigans and exploits ensue. Leaves that crew after a while and joins a more diverse one. Capers, antics and scrapes continue. Dips from that crew after a few years as well, and joins yet another.
At first, there are the usual japes, but soon this crew suffers misadventure, and Caseswing winds up the lone survivor aboard a battered Wren-class ship, barely holding orbit around a planet in the arse-end of the universe.
She gets herself back on her feet, gets back into exploring and such, but this time she doesn't go out of her way to get a crew...
... But she finds one (of a sort) anyway. Caseswing is being chased by monsters and runs into a green novakid who's being chased by bandits. They team up and take out the respective threats. The novakid introduces himself as Fevertwinkle.
One thing leads to another, and the pair team up when they can.
Eventually they find a Garden planet to settle down on and start building a base together.
What points in their life are you writing about?
All. Most of my stories have been about her time since becoming a Starbounder, but I am planning to dip into her early life as well.
Who are they in real-world development terms?
Caseswing was my player character in the Beta version of Starbound. I'm unsure how many hours I had on record with her as I lost that sort of detail when the Full Version Wipe happened, but I feel it was upwards of 500 hours. Her name is due to a bug in the character creation screen – I was looking at playing a glitch, but then flipped over to Novakid and decided to play one, never noticing that the name field hadn't updated with a Novakid name, and had instead kept the autogenned glitch name.
As Caseswing was the Beta version, I've decided to keep to the idea that she's just a random Starbounder, rather than retconning her to be a Protector. I'm also trying to keep the way things were in Beta for her stories, for example, the fact that frögg had hylotl names.
* Fevertwinkle's player and I are no longer anything to each other, and since the character's original name caused me upset I elected to rename him something that doesn't remind me of the player. Despite the IRL issues, the character is still important to Caseswing so I didn't want to retcon him out.
A fun scene I made in Heroforge that didn't really fit in the ref image
She's telling you a tall tale of her adventures. You've had just enough to wonder if the extraordinary exploit might actually be the truth...

Princess Caseswing's Parents: Cliptrim and Shaftsight
I'm toying with an idea for the SB Autumn prompt "Falling Leaves", featuring Caseswing's early years. So, of course, that means I need to create her parents in Heroforge (they were never created in-game).
There's no real lore on how new novakid are made. Since they are the living embodiment of ADHD forgetfulness, I headcanoned that after being created in space, sometimes baby nova are forgotten by their progenitor.
That's what happened to Princess Caseswing.
Without her progenitor, she fell like a shooting star to Procyon Rift II, close to a glitch settlement. She was found by Cliptrim and Shaftsight, who raised her as their own - including giving her a traditional glitch name.
This couple are simple folks. Shaftsight tends to their land and keeps fluffalo, while Cliptrim keeps the house. They employ a few hands, but they don't have a large holding. Many in their village thought them strange for taking in a novakid child, but they didn't care. They love their daughter, and their daughter loves them.

This is from SB22 Prompt: Falling Leaves (it needs a proper name).
The hylotl took the cup. "Thank you… Caseswing, was it? That is an unusual name for-" Whatever he said was drowned out by Shaftsight clearing his throat.
For some context, Caseswing is a Novakid raised by Glitch (hence the Hylotl saying she has an unusual name), but she's not aware of that in this story.

~OTHER STUFF~
This is a fanfiction of the game Starbound, from when it was in Beta and the Tenant system was first introduced. I wrote this for NaNoWriMo 2014 because I was fascinated by the way the procedurally generated NPCs ran around on their own little missions, fell in love and interacted with their environment.
As this is an anthology, I'm working on the stories one by one to make it easier for editing, and publishing them to Tumblr and AO3.
The Barkeep's Tale can be found here; and The Miner's Tale can be found here.
~EXCERPT~
It's taken me a long time to get where I am now - from almost crashing above Cor Caroli Prime in my rented Wren-Class ship, to owning the sleek Condon-class that I write this from, hovering above the planet I've made my home in the Beta 61 Vir 4657 system - but I think it's worth it. Not least, because my home has become home to so many others...

Universe: Starbound CW: Loneliness, dissociation, trapped underground Words: 3,400 Context: This was written during NaNoWriMo 2015, part of a collection of short stories called "Tales of the Starbound". I decided to re-write each story individually. Note: Please read fully on AO3 - I'm having issues formatting it correctly on Tumblr
[Official Guard log] [Solar Rotation 3, Day 046]
Devon Parker, ident c4efac10, reporting on the preliminary day of duty.
I've settled in fine – the few belongings I brought with me have been stowed in the appropriate place.
I was given a (very brief) induction by a green novakid called Fevertwinkle, who said he's my new boss. According to him, my duties are:
To patrol the immediate surrounds and keep the mineshaft clear of any creatures
To keep the equipment – a small desktop computer and the teleporter – in good working order
To protect the teleporter at all costs
I will commence working tomorrow at 0900h, local time.
[Log Ends]
[Personal log of Devon Parker] [Day 0 of assignment on Virla]
Oh, man. It is good to finally be transferred off that damned Lunar base. I am so sick of the smell of Erchius fluid – it's a sickly sweet smell, almost like rotting fruit. Bleh.
But enough about what's past, and more focus on the future!
Fevertwinkle, my new employer, seems nice enough, even if he has a bit of that 'nutty professor' feel. Beta 61Vir 4657Ia – called Virla by the locals – seems to be a Terran-like planet, though I didn't get much of a look top-side. I beamed directly into Fevertwinkle's office, where I managed a glance of lush greenery out of the window before we teleported directly into my new home. Fevertwinkle intimated that we're very close to the planet's core, and it certainly is warmer than I would have expected.
The bunker here, which is to be my new home, is a simple, utilitarian, metal box. My bunk is much like the one I had on the Lunar mining station - cramped and with limited storage. On the floor below, is a basic table and chair and the workstation I'm using to compile this log. The floor below that is the main hallway and contains a fountain, for some reason. I can only assume this is to be the source of my water. The hallway leads, on one side, to the teleporter and the exit on the other.
Now I've taken a moment to reflect on my position, I realise that Fevertwinkle never mentioned the duration of my rotation down here nor if others will be joining me.
...
I'm sure it was just an oversight. Fevertwinkle seemed like a very busy person.
[Log Ends]

As I'm currently trying to rewrite The Old Timer's Tale, part of my Tales of the Starbound anthology, I thought I'd take some time to introduce y'all to the main featured characters. Procrastinating? Me? Never...
The Old Timer's Tale takes place in Vertex Village, one of my first colony builds on our Beta server:
Quihui is the star of this tale, a middle-aged avian who was one of Princess Caseswing's first-ever tenants, using the modern system of colony deeds. He's an apostate of Kluex, likes people watching, and dislikes all the steps between him and the market.
Wandangi Wilibind is one of Quihui's closest neighbours. Xe likes hunting, dislikes the cold, and longs to explore all of Beta 61 Vir 4657Ia.
Aly Shostak is an enigma wrapped in a riddle occasionally smothered in... ketchup (we hope). They like being mysterious and dislike early mornings.
Bloodsoother Minoch, aka Mini, is a loquacious and vivacious ex-starbounder. She likes having fun and dislikes thinking of the past.

Princess Caseswing
This is my player character from the Beta server that sadly no longer exists. Her unusual name is due to a bug with character creation being raised by a pair of Glitch before joining the Protectorate.
Getting her brand right on Heroforge was a challenge, but I think this works. I also have no idea what that sword is she’s carrying -- I assume it was a procedurally generated one, rather than a unique -- but I think the one from Heroforge works in terms of length.
Where Mio is much more reserved in her attacks, choosing to use a projectile weapon before her sword, Caseswing is a true buccaneer, choosing to swing straight into battle, cut to the quick and retreat to slap on a nanowrap bandage.

Tales of the Starbound: Prologue
I thought I’d drag out some old Starbound fanfic, because I could. This is from my 2015 NaNoWriMo novel. I haven’t really changed much, just spell checked. All of that novel was based on a server I built in way back when the game was in beta, and begins based on my PC, Princess Caseswing. Words: 690 TW: leaving home
The bridge is always quiet this time of night. I like to just sit here sometimes, looking out at the dark expanse in front of me. StarBurst, my Snugget, likes to curl up under the console when I sit, but right now she's up in her kennel, sleeping. My spaceship is never silent though; the hum of the air conditioning is constant. The jets fire occasionally as they adjust the ship to keep us in geosynchronous orbit around whatever planet I've parked us at today. The console beeps as S.A.I.L keeps track of our vital signs, of space debris outside the ship, of a hundred and one different operations and procedures.
There is a universe out there, a hundred billion worlds and more for me to explore. What will I find? Not even S.A.I.L – the Ship-based Artificial Intelligence Lattice that stops us falling out of the sky – can tell me that exactly. I don't mind it though. If anything, I enjoy the mystery. Who can tell if I'll meet someone friendly, who can tell if I'll have to fight for my very life? I live for the excitement, for the thrill and the discovery.
Although, sometimes, I wonder if what I've been looking for is a home. Not just a place to come from, or a stop along the way, but a 'forever home. Somewhere that can ground me. Someplace I can go back to always and be welcomed.
Well, gosh. Look at me chattering away on the unknowns of life, and not even having introduced myself yet. My name is Princess Caseswing, and I'm a Novakid.
I come from Procyon Rift II, from a small glitch settlement on that arid world. Nova Kid are brought into being by their forebears. Some stardust, a lot of gas, and a speck of the burning glowing heart of their ancestor are all melded together and captured by the brand on one's face into a hard plasma shell. I've heard that some Novakid are taught the ways of the 'Verse by those same forebears. Guess I wasn't so lucky in that regard, but I was sure lucky enough I didn't have to sort it all out for myself. I was found by a glitch couple – a lady called Cliptrim and her partner Shaftsight – who gave me a name and taught me what I needed to know about the people and worlds around our own. They were good people, honest and kind.
I remember though, as Shaftsight taught me about the 'Verse, I just couldn't get it out of my mind all the strangeness and mystery that life might hold for me up there in the dark void of space. All those little lights twinkling up there were just waiting for me to go take a look-see and have them reveal themselves to me. I remember too, he looked down at me as we sat there on the smooth straw roof gazing at the night sky, and he said, "I knew, the day your Mamma brought you home, that we'd lose you back to the stars you were born from." He wiped a drop of oil from his clockwork face, dented and scarred with welds as it was and he looked back up at the soft inky darkness above. "Yep, I just knew it. One day our little girl would hear the call, get the gleam of wanderlust in her eye, and go off to become a fabled Starbounder."
It wasn't long after that, he passed the word through Glitch channels I could never understand, and a ship came to whisk me away as he said, off out to those stars above our home.

Meeting Your OC tag game

Rules: write a short snippet about if your OCs ever met you irl (or in their world, that’s up to you) and write about the conversation they would start with you (or you would start with them). Then tag some people
The name picker has chosen Princess Caseswing, from Starbound (beta), for this.
The Outpost is warmer than I expected. I thought it would be airport aircon cold; instead, a balmy warmth extrudes from the concrete walls. She didn't give me a time to meet, and since I'm worried about missing her, I haven't moved far from the teleporter. It doesn't matter; I'm too busy staring out a window in awe at the stars.
So busy, in fact, I hardly notice when someone moves next to me. "Pretty, ain't they?" "Stunning," I agree. I turn to look and jump when I see it's her. She grins at me -- I think. It's hard to tell when her face is blank of everything except a brand. "Sorry, pardner. Didn't mean to startle you." "Caseswing." I gape. It's hard not to. She's brighter than I thought possible, magenta glow suffusing the air around us. She nods, pulling off her tricorn hat and giving a flourishing bow. "One and the same." There's a more serious note in her voice as she clutches the hat with both hands. "It's an honour t'meet you, ma'am." "It- I- The honour is all mine." I feel heat rising to my face. She's caught me off guard, and I'm fumbling like always. Now I don't know what to say next, and gods this is going so badly- She cocks her head, fingers picking at the gold braiding on her hat. "You hungry? We can get Pearlpea Parcels from the Infinity Express? Or a drink in the Beakeasy?" Caseswing's light increases and she rolls onto the balls of her feet. "You wanna see my spaceship?" With that simple question, all my nervousness is gone, replaced with giddy excitement. "Gods yes, do I!" She straightens and pulls her hat back on. "That settles it. But let's get the parcels still. Newbies 'porting on an empty stomach ain't a swell plan." I laugh, brain fizzy from glee. "Sure." She loops a brilliant pink arm through mine, her skin making mine tingle with static, and we make our way to the Infinity Express.
