what are your top 10 favourite anime ever? what about manga?
Ooh!!
Anime:
Revolutionary Girl Utena (I’m including the movie in this, along with the series). This is just a no-brainer; it’s such an artistic masterpiece, in addition to being perfectly suited to my sensibilities.
PriPara. This one has serious flaws, I’ll admit (the biggest being the portrayal of Aprica in season 3 and the issues surrounding the Aprican character, Pepper). I still think it’s a great show, and it’s very, very important to me, particularly because of the character of Sophy. Whenever I’m feeling inadequate, I remind myself that someone as cool as Sophy was made to feel the same thing for similar reasons, but when she stopped listening to those voices and embraced her whole self, including the parts of herself she had always been told to hide, she was able to flourish as her true self, and even became a Divine Idol while being openly disabled, something she’d always been told was impossible. Plus, it’s SO zany and fun, and there are so many important messages even in addition to the one I wrote about.
Princess Comet. I’ve actually only seen about half of it due to the subs being only half-complete, but that’s how strongly I feel about this masterpiece. People have compared Princess Tutu to a more child-friendly Utena, and there’s some truth in that, but I think, based on what I’ve seen of Princess Comet, that it’s actually closer to Utena in the spirit of its themes. The anime version, specifically, is about a princess who was sent to earth to search for a prince she was supposed to secure a marriage with, except the princess doesn’t care about the prince at all… she just wanted an excuse to visit earth. It’s basically a comedy about her going on adventures while having to deal with adults who want her to constantly be on the lookout for a potential husband and look for him in every guy she meets (since she doesn’t even know what this prince looks like). Idk how it ends, but it’s amazing.
Simoun. This one also has serious issues (mainly… the time the protagonist… told a victim of incestuous sexual assault that she must have done something to lead the assaulter on, and this was… never shown as wrong). However, it’s one of my favorites because it depicts the experience of being a nonbinary lesbian in a way that just… really, really resonates with me, so I can’t dislodge it from my heart.
I’m gonna cheat and list PreCure (Pretty Cure) as one entry rather than having 4 separate entries for the last 4 PreCure seasons, because I want to be able to list more anime.
Shoujo Kageki Revue Starlight.
Oh man, now things get hard. Even with PreCure compressed into one entry, I can’t fit in Princess Tutu and Jewelpet Kira Deco and Dear Brother and Maria-sama ga Miteru and Sweet Blue Flowers and Ojamajo Doremi and Sailor Moon… so hard… I guess for this entry I’ll go with… Ojamajo Doremi.
Sailor Moon. I’m not specifying a version because the real Sailor Moon, to me, is the version that lives in my heart, which is truly an amalgam of the manga, the ‘90′s anime, the live-action TV series, Crystal, and all the movies and musicals. Every different version has its own strengths and weaknesses; all of them contribute to whole of Sailor Moon, which I think is greater than the sum of its parts.
Sweet Blue Flowers.
….Princess Tutu, because the heroine is amazing and so is the storytelling, although I wish Ahiru had ended up with Rue.
Manga:
The Utena movie manga and the first two chapters of After the Revolution (I don’t acknowledge the main story of chapter 3).
Terumi Nishii’s scifi yuri manga Crown of Ourobouros. It’s a work-in-progress, and only one chapter has an English translation so far, but the author’s friend is working on translating the rest, which will be freely available on the Internet. Meanwhile you can support the artist by buying merch and contributing to her Patreon.
Uko Nishi’s josei manga Collectors, about two women, lovers, who find common ground in their very different interests: fashion and book collecting.
Himitsu no Hanazono by Mihona Fuji, author of the famous Gals! series that’s been licensed in English and has an anime (sadly, her yuri manga Himitsu no Hanazono remains unlicensed).
Pietà
My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness (I haven’t yet read the sequel).
Everything that’s been scanlated from Phryne Magazine, especially Mori e Kaerou.
Sailor Moon, of course.
Going to put Pretty Cure on this list too because I can, even though I admit I haven’t read all of it.
Chiho Saitou’s Kakan no Madonna. This is straight but a feminist masterpiece imo, as well as an exciting and delightfully anachronistic adventure story. It was either this or the Yuri Kuma Arashi manga…

Since Revue Starlight is going to have two anime films for the series - a brand-new film and a "reproduction" compilation film (meaning it's a recap of the series) what hopes and wishes you have for the sequel film? And are there any things you wish they would change or add in the recap film?
You know, I was wondering that myself for a while - what do I want to see from the new movie content? And I think I have a couple answers!
#1 is definitely that I want the new one to be current-time content. I don’t really want it to be entirely a backstory, or “first year at Seishou” kind of thing, because that would mean excluding Hikari, and overall I just wanna see new content, with the girls and their personalities and relationships as they’re progressing right now after they’ve performed Starlight.
#2 is that I definitely wanna see more revues. I’m not sure if they’re finished (?) since Hikari and Karen’s was presumably the last, but I do hope there’ll be more epic revues and fight scenes somehow.
#3 is I don’t want any new characters. Or if there are any, I don’t want them to be the main focus of the movie. I know a lot of bigger series movies like Bleach and Naruto bring in random new characters where the whole movie centers around them and their story, not the main characters from the series. I doubt Revue Starlight would do that, but it’s just like... One Fear lol
#4 as for what I would wanna see added in the recap... the other girls’ backstories we didn’t see in the anime! We’re okay on Karen, Hikari, Mahiru, Kaourko and Futaba, but I wanna see a bit of backstory on Junna, Nana, Maya, and Claudine! Either before they met each other, or more in-depth of their meetings with one another (like in the anime we got 20 seconds of how Claudine and Maya met, but it was so brief). I want more details!

Suosittelen että laitat kirjahankintalistallesi Alicia Jasinskan tulevan The Dark Tide romaanin koska "a girl sacrifices herself to her sinking island-city's Witch Queen in order to save the boy she likes, but ends up falling in love with the witch herself".
elän budjetilla joten en voi tota ihan heti ostaa, mutta pidän mielessä ja kyylään kirjastoa^^

Do you know where can I read After the Revolution chapters?
Yeah, idk if mainstream scanlation sites have it or not but it was posted at http://ohtori.nu/gallery/20th-Manga!
EDIT:
I said this completely ignorant of the fact that there’s a licensed translation coming out.
I’m not going to remove the link to the scanlation, mainly because not every Utena fan who’s read this manga likes it, and I myself have a pretty big gripe with the last chapter to the point where I can’t recommend it without at least mentioning that. So I would recommend checking it out before you go and place an order.
However, I do think buying it is good; if nothing else, this selling well would increase the chances of other Utena material being released in English in the future. And I think two of these three chapters are wonderful and stand well on their own, so there’s definitely value in it.

Do you mind telling me what happens in the last/third chapter of After the Revolution? I don't like Utena manga (mainly because Juri is straight and all the Utena x Anthy stuff is gone and the anime's story and characters are just so much better) but I am interested to know if Saito has improved at all and how she ends the story. Btw, is the Utena movie manga any good? Is there any yuri in it?
Utena movie manga is great imo, beautiful. but while Anthy is definitely in love with Utena, the nature of Utena’s feelings for Anthy are Sorta unclear in it... but it ends with them together and happy. There’s one particular scene in the movie manga that I consider to be as good as the anime’s cantarella scene. Incidentally, someone found an old draft of the movie script and the movie manga has a lot in common with that draft... but it’s better (than the draft) imo.
As to whether “Saito has improved at all”: Yes. Juri is a lesbian in After the Revolution, and Utena and Anthy do end up together... what I was disappointed with in the third chapter was what she did with Miki and Kozue. You can probably guess...
I believe that their obsession with each other is toxic and smothering, for both of them, and that what they need is to give each other space to live their own lives.
In this chapter... the problem was presented as being... that Miki was holding them both back in their relationship because he was ~overly fixated~ on the definition of their relationship as “siblings,” and what is and isn’t appropriate for siblings. It ended with Miki describing their relationship as “still evolving” which In Itself is fine but in context... :/
In other words... it ended up coming across as pro-incest and didn’t feel true to the characters and their needs at all.
