Advocacy and Art (PSA)

As somebody who was around during the AIDS crisis, I have a lesson to share. It's very short, and very simple, and very brutal.

Consuming art is just consumerism. Making art is the only real advocacy.

(obviously also advocacy is advocacy, I'm speaking in particular about fandom 'advocacy')

I learned this at museums, watching people discuss so many artists' final pieces of art. I learned this at clinics, when we ran campaigns to try and get support from the public. I learned this at the AIDS quilt, listening to people comment on how pretty some squares were.

Most of all I've learned this from the way I am still treated. If consuming art was advocacy that changed people's minds, then we wouldn't have dealt with the neglect and the active ignoring of the HIV/AIDS while it got worse and worse.

But art is only advocacy if you're making it. Consuming art is not advocacy.

Consuming shows, movies, and art made by others is not advocacy. Awareness is a very limited form of advocacy only needed for things people are actually unaware of beforehand.

Thus, for queers, the only advocacy possible through art is making your own. Consumption is not activism.

I only see two people mentioning this...

YES - it is ILLEGAL (in the states) for a prospective employer to ask you for a photo as a part of the application process.

It's illegal because it allows for personal bias and discrimination. If you're asked for a photo whether it's your ID or whatever - send them this image file...

Here's the other thing that they aren't supposed to do... Some employers will ask you to submit a video. They might call it a video interview, but don't let the wording fool you. It's an audition, and if it's not for an *on camera* role, it's probably illegal. In that case, here's a script I started using... just be aware, you will NOT get the job if you use this:

"Hi, So your job 'requires' a 'video interview'… but an interview is a conversation between two people, and this is not that because you are not here. That means you were actually requiring a video 'audition' to be considered for the job.

Now, I happen to know that employers aren't supposed to ask applicants for photos *show that part of the EEOC site and read the text

So, my question is why would you think this is an acceptable hiring practice, given how close it is to something deemed 'prohibited'? I'll offer an alternative that doesn't fall so close to what the EEOC calls 'Prohibited Employment Practices'.

What do you think as Hermione's career would be post battle of Hogwarts? To me her being minister for magic really doesn't make sense. She does not have patience or tact to wade through murky waters of politics 😭😭

So hard to say! The Trio are so, so young when we leave them, I find it almost impossible to project their futures farther than a few years out. The job that suited me at 17 would be radically unsuited to me now. That's why of all the Trio, Ron's ending strikes me as the most realistic — he jumps straight into the save-the-world business again, burns out, realizes he's actually Done The Fuck Enough, Thanks, and pivots into a low-stress career where he gets to see his family a lot. Feels accurate! The others are weirder to me because they do seem to just... pick a lane and stay there.

With Hermione, you could spin her a couple ways. You could say that she leans into her bookish side and does research or teaching, which is not my preference for a couple reasons (namely, I don't think Hermione would like academia as a profession; she finds her classwork interesting and enjoys intellectual validation, but she'd be stifled and wasted in a DPhil program, and she'd be infuriated by the administrative politicking of your average higher-ed faculty). You could say that she gets disaffected with politics and ends up as a barrister or a lobbyist of some kind, but if anything that requires more political finesse, because you don't actually have institutional power, you're just handling the people who make decisions and trying to persuade them of your goals. This is not Hermione's preferred method of influence. She's not even particularly good at persuasion, she just happens to be smart enough (and right often enough) that people take her ideas seriously.

Or you could say her brashness fades with the years into a softened flavor of tell-you-like-it-is honesty, which some politicians actually do successfully trade on; as we see in British politics today, you don't have to be all that charming or clever to get ahead, you just need to be really driven and well-connected (which Hermione completely is; she fought shoulder-to-shoulder with the first postwar Minister and her bestie, the Literal Messiah, runs the Auror Office.) But I don't know if Hermione especially wants to be Minister, after the war. She's just watched years of horrendous bureaucratic incompetence plunge the country into a violent civil conflict. She's had not one, but two Ministers of Magic try to bully or shame her friends into complicity with fascism. Her view of government is... likely extremely dark.

But Hermione also isn't the kind of person who sees her life as a quest for happiness. Babygirl has a savior complex that makes Harry look selfish. (She basically kills her parents — yeah, obliviating is a form of murder, #changemymind — "for their own good," and justifies every batshit, vindictive, mean-spirited move she ever pulls on the grounds that it "helps" one of her friends.) She is a mean, lean, dragon-slaying machine, and she needs a dragon. After Voldemort, the Ministry is the no. 1 threat to muggle-borns and non-wizarding Beings. As a war heroine with basically infinite political capital, I'd be surprised if she didn't try to do something there. That said, Hermione is so vivacious and dynamic that she could potentially grow in a hundred different directions; it's possible that all of this, while true of her at 18, becomes completely inaccurate by 22. That's why I'm not too fussed about any particular fanon interpretation.

Vegans are some of the most classist and especially ableist people I've ever met and it never fails to baffle me how one can extend so much empathy to every animal except the human.

That being said I'm also fully convinced it's no coincidence that vegetarians and vegans have been turned into these elitist groups, who are made to think of themselves as better than others while everyone else is made to think of them as obnoxious. It's just another way of vilifying climate activism while also pushing the entire issue back onto the individual rather than onto the corporations that actually cause it.

honestly my biggest wonder about yesterdays drama was like... who even was that? not the person being called out, but the one calling them out. like, its one thing to make a throwaway to make a callout post, but to go on anon and try to pull unrelated people into it? this was clearly someone still in the taleblr server since they had screenshots from literally the same day in their callout

this isnt me taking sides because genuinely i have more important things to worry about than all that, but its different when it comes to this person because like... i just thought yall were different than that? maybe we all dont totally consider eachother friends entirely but i liked to think we were all somewhere around there for the most part

theres only so many of us and we all try to stay chill (to more or less success) because like... theres probably less than 100 of us left, and we're all adults by now as far as i know, and i know age doesnt really equal maturity, but its just so immature to try and stir drama by messaging unrelated parties.

you should get links for the major local affiliates of the major news networks (abc, nbc, etc)

Nothing changes unless we make changes, folks. We need to make it loud and clear that these christofascist bigots are the minority- no matter how loud and obnoxious they are.

This is real and they have defended it instead of removing and apologizing for it. Where is the tv news coverage, where is the mass outrage, where are the protests?
