It's probably a mistake MC makes, trying to keep their relationship a secret, but when you live with a bunch of nosy demons with a better sense of smell than you imagine, the ruse only lasts so long.

Most of the time, it's not going to be some dramatic outburst or outlandish threats. The reactions are going to subdued - delayed, perhaps - while they consider all the options. It's going to vary wildly depending on the OC, and certain canon characters will feel more strongly about it than the rest.

Most of them would choke down their own disappointment as long as you're happy and cared for, but chances are they won't be able to pretend they're not seething with bitter jealousy all the time.)

AZRA — He and Lucifer will never be best friends and he's one of the characters that will react poorly to the news. Not in a flashy, dramatic way, but he's going to pretend he's not being petty af when he finds reasons to interrupt your plans together or come up with a bunch of excuses why you're too busy to spend time with him. Satan is an odd place because he and Azra have the potential to be better friends than they are, but he has some negative emotional bleed-over from when Lucifer was an angel which skews his perspective a bit without him realizing it. Solomon reacts the same way that Lucifer does, but where Lucifer feigns indifference (poorly) and tries to interfere in a subtle way, Solomon doesn't pretend at all that he's seriously annoyed by your choice of companion and he doesn't care who knows about it. In fact, he's going to make sure Azra hears his thinly-veiled criticisms and snarky remarks as much as possible, preferably while you're in earshot to hear them all.

ZEE — He's probably one of the better demon OCs to date because none of the canon cast are particularly close to him. It'd be like dating some random demon from RAD: sure, they're upset you're dating him and not them, but Zee hasn't really done anything that justifies them interfering in your relationship too much either. If anything, the same complaints about Azra might apply here because being intimate with Zee naturally means you're going to be drawn deeper into Azra's circle, which certain demons won't appreciate.

KARASU — Most of the demons that know him have to try reeeeally hard to find reasons to dislike Karasu, aside from petty complaints about his quiet demeanor and how he flakes out on social engagements. Levi and Mephisto are the ones most like to work themselves into a jealous fit out of anyone else, but there's not much either of them can really do about it aside from anonymous shit talking online (Levi) or subtle jabs whenever his name is mentioned in the RAD newspaper (Mephisto).

TENEBRIS — Diavolo is the main obstacle and maybe the worst one since he’s, y’know, the future king and all. There’s a lot of weird guilt and deference between them because they try so hard to be supportive and care for each other, but having you choose one over the other is going to sting even if they’ve made their peace with not being chosen. (Honestly, dating both of them or neither of them would have better outcomes than trying to date one and remain friends with the other.) The other unhappy party here would be Solomon, who is smart enough to respect Tenebris’ magical abilities but selfish enough to try and lure his apprentice away from the demon just to spite him.

BELIAL — Another surprising and yet horrifying choice some of the characters will have trouble accepting, assuming they're not already plotting ways to forcibly separate you two first. Out of the demon OCs, Belial is the one that is unpredictable and outwardly dangerous. (It's not that the others aren't, but most of them are quiet about their pasts where Belial tends to gloat about his deadly and chaotic misadventures without shame.) Diavolo and Barbatos are both wary about the development, Lucifer and Beel wonder what went so wrong during the exchange program that you ended up with him of all demons, and none of them can imagine what could entice you to be with someone like him. (Belial knows they won't like it, he doesn't care if they don't like it, and he might even scent or mark you up a bit more just to see them squirm because they can mind their own business.)

FLEURETY — Most demons are going to give you grief about sleeping with a RAD professor, especially one that was notorious for his scientific interest in humans before Diavolo declared those activities a distraction from his goal of achieving peace with the other realms. Most of them admit that Fleurety’s not the worst choice if you had to date someone that wasn’t one of them, but he doesn’t have many close friends among the seven brothers either. Like Zee, their petty remarks and jealousy don’t amount to much although you might have to tolerate their antics if the others are in the same class as you. The “Whatcha gonna do for extra credit?” jokes are going to wear out quickly.

As for the angels, it’s hard for the demons to get too jealous because compared to them, most angels would look like a much better partner for a human like you. If you caught Habuhiah’s eye, or Metatron’s? They won’t blame you for that.

The only angels that would really draw their attention would be:

METATRON — Solomon might be jealous, but I think he’d enjoy sharing the wonderful news with Azra more (to make him jealous).

GABRIEL & URIEL — The most surprising turn of events, neither angel are known for wanting to share or be shared with anyone else. Gabriel is known for being very stubborn and they’re going to wonder how you managed to get under his skin.

MICHAEL — Technically not an OC but I’m including him anyway. Be prepared for a volley of questions like: “How did you end up dating when he’s too busy being a sanctimonious know-it-all?” “Does he eat cake in bed and call it foreplay?” It’s difficult for them to be happy for you (and him) when there’s still a lot of unresolved baggage left to unpack.

What do you think is the reason behind Sirius's acceptance and support of Remus Lupin - a werewolf? The creature his mother finds disgusting and despicable. Did he find the idea of having a werewolf friend exciting and a proper way to be even more rebellious towards his mother, even if only quietly, since she probably never knew he was friends with a werewolf? Your criticisms describe Sirius as someone performative, keeping it safe with the whole 'befriending an enemy but still a respectable one' and someone who still holds bigoted beliefs, even if they are subconcious. Therefore do you think his acceptance of Remus at first was only because of James's influence or did he actually like Remus as a person and managed to swallow down his uncomfortable feelings? And what about James? Werewolves are very oppressed in their society, much more so than muggleborns, they are basically considered subhuman by most of society. Accepting one into your friendgroup is a huge achievement and a sign of kindness (if their acceptance of him was actually rooted in moral values and not something else). They also managed to keep Remus's secret for so long. What do you think? Honestly, I think they found it thrilling to play with danger. They liked the idea that one of their dorm mates had a super dark secret that only they knew, and that this secret involved putting themselves in danger once a month. Sirius, in particular, was always pretty reckless, and I think the excitement of knowing he was going to face some kind of monster genuinely turned him on.

Then there’s that typical teenage mindset of sharing a secret, the feeling of being special because you know something nobody else does, of belonging to a group that’s above everyone else because they’re privy to ultra-confidential information. And let’s not forget James's paternalistic side—being the self-proclaimed hero of the story, he probably took Remus under his wing in a mega-condescending "Don’t worry, bro, I’ll take care of you, this is between us, together till the end" kind of way. You know, typical 1970s hetero teenage guy stuff, flaunting their masculine camaraderie.

But primarily? I think they were just reckless kids addicted to trouble and rule-breaking for fun, who found the idea of having a monster in the house wildly exciting in a completely childish and thoughtless way. I also think they probably saw Remus and Peter—but especially Remus—as their personal charity cases, partly to convince themselves they weren’t just a bunch of privileged snobs.

It doesn’t take much to see how shallow their relationship with Remus really was. I mean, they didn’t consider him at all. When the war broke out, he was the first one they suspected of switching sides. After Lily and James died, Remus never reached out to Harry, not even when Harry had already started at Hogwarts. I’ve always felt that deep down, Remus didn’t matter to them. They probably cared about him, sure, but he was more like their personal freak-show attraction than anything else. This was especially true for Sirius, who even considered using him as a weapon against Severus. Pure utilitarianism.

minor spoilers for b3 ahead! also cw for discussions of grooming and canon-typical abuse, a brief mention of rape, mentions of books where rape & grooming are big topics (lolita & my dark vanessa). this got really long lol

so it's pretty much established that aerin was already very much isolated from people at a young age due to a number of factors, his fear of and abuse by baldur (and arlan) being the primary reason for that. he was also a meek and shy child who wasn't as popular in court compared to baldur. aurinae also died early in aerin's life, leaving him without the one figure who actually cared about him.

all this contributes to aerin being extremely vulnerable to the dreadlord. (minor spoiler) in b3 aerin mentions that he was nine when the dreadlord first started speaking to him. when you're a young vulnerable child like him, it's easy to fall prey to someone who seems like they have your best interests at heart. his family was either dead or resented him, he's the spare who people don't care about - the dreadlord's promises sound really good! we only got little of the dreadlord himself throughout the books, but i like to think the dreadlord did not actually care about him, only using him as a means to an end as he was a vulnerable child in a position the dreadlord can exploit.

(spoiler) aerin also mentions that the nerada stone was given to him after an incident where he accidentally used shadow, and that most shadow magic was done with the dreadlord's help. to me, the giving of the nerada stone is like a predator going "don't tell anyone, it's our little secret, okay?" i like to think this little secret between the two of them makes aerin feel special, and wanting for more, even if keeping the secret very physically hurts him (as mentioned in b1). what a lot of people don't seem to understand is that a lot of the times groomers make their victims feel special, and that causes a lot of mixed feelings from the POV of the victim. they do genuinely start to love their abusers, and from that line of thinking i like to think that aerin similarly has complicated feelings for the dreadlord (as does nia have for the temple of light, kamilah & adrian for gaius, etc etc).

with all this done i also like to build more on the idea of aerin's isolation. another thing that tends to be ignored is how the structures around the victim actually assist in perpetuating and providing avenues for the abuse to happen. in lolita (i keep mentioning this book on my blog, lolitapilled forever i fear), humbert tells dolores that she has nowhere else to go, that if she reported it to authorities etc they would shame her and mark as rotten forever and insitutionalize her and she'd never have a normal life ever again -

“While I stand gripping the bars, you, happy neglected child, will be given a choice of various dwelling places, all more or less the same, the correctional school, the reformatory, the juvenile detention home, or one of those admirable girls’ protectories where you knit things, and sing hymns, and have rancid pancakes on Sundays. ... if we two are found out, you will be analyzed and institutionalized, my pet, c’est tout. You will dwell, my Lolita will dwell (come here, my brown flower) with thirty-nine other dopes in a dirty dormitory (no, allow me, please) under the supervision of hideous matrons. ... Don’t you think that under the circumstances Dolores Haze had better stick to her old man?”

which he isn't exactly wrong about! if aerin had opened up to the people around him about what was going on, what would they do? if he went to his family, they'd shun and hate him even more. if he went to the temple, they'd brand him a heretic and also shame him even more (minor spoiler again-in b3, this is what is implied to have happened to nia). none of these institutions, the family & the church, would have ever had his well being at heart. they are the same institutions which shunned (family) him in the first place and would have shunned (church) him anyway because he didn't and wouldn't have been able to live to their ideals. again, family and religion aren't ontologically pure things - they're institutions which often exist to perpetuate the status quo.

that's to say that i personally hc that aerin has a lot of mixed feelings for the dreadlord. taking this line from my dark vanessa (also a book i love so much) -

“It only accelerated after that, once he knew I was ok with it—and isn’t that what consent is, always being asked what you want? Did I want him to kiss me? Did I want him to touch me? Did I want him to fuck me? Slowly guided into the fire—why is everyone so scared to admit how good that can feel? To be groomed is to be loved and handled like a precious, delicate thing.”

the thing is, aerin did want the things the dreadlord seemed to promise. no one else was left to treat him nicely. he loved that the dreadlord could give him the power to change his circumstances. and it felt good! he admits in b2 that he didn't regret killing baldur! him wanting that doesn't make him any less of a victim, but i think a lot of discussions around this tend to overlook this feeling, because it's a lot less easier to swallow than the typical Huge Evil Perpetrator/100% Unwilling Victim narrative that tends to get pushed around a lot. (i also don't like how people seem to be assigning morality to grooming. anyone can be groomed, and acting like the victims always have to conform to this perfect standard does not help at all actually)

so. anyway. i'd love more things/discussions about aerin and an interpretation where his feelings for the dreadlord are more complicated. where he accepts that the dreadlord took advantage of him, but he also can't find it in himself to FULLY hate the dreadlord, that sometimes he misses the dreadlord, sometimes he can't stand to remember how the dreadlord physically hurt him for over a decade in order to keep their little secret (can be read as a rape, imo, though it's not as overt as the dreadlord literally taking nia's body, which @puredoesnotmeankind @livelaughlovecassie and i like to read it as). the dreadlord potentially holding the fact that he was the one who's helping and "caring for" aerin over aerin's head. complicated feelings!! messy interpretations that are more true to complex human feelings and whatnot. i'd love that.

listen there really was just something about how in the book, snow’s 3-page descent from hesitant lover boy to deluded mfer happens entirely in his mind. lucy gray gives him no indication whatsoever that she suspects him, that she’s going to leave or betray him. he’s just sitting quietly in the cabin waiting for her to return when that seed of calculated suspicion, which he has needed to survive the capitol, takes a hold of him and chokes the life out of any goodness left inside him. it really drives home your terror as a reader that “oh my god did he kill her? did she escape? what happened to her? why would he even think that?” in a way that when the movie had to adjust for visualization it lost some of that holy shit this guy has lost it emphasis.

im thinking about possession aftereffects that linebeck experiences immediately after the events of phantom hourglass, so here are bullet points i have down for my own ideas

he’s out cold for roughly five days after the fight. he’s conscious for a bit after being freed, but it doesn’t take long for him to collapse once he’s transported back to the great sea. link finds him when he reaches his ship to see him again (he takes a lifeboat or w/e from tetras ship its a whole thing and not the point) and ends up having to take care of him for those five-ish days.

while he’s out cold, he develops a bad fever, and has a good few physical injures from being possessed; all of his wounds from being possessed manifest as burns, the worst wounds bring cauterized and mostly closed, while smaller ones are still open wounds. the largest wound is a large burn covering most of his back, which is cauterized by the time he passes out, and then there are smaller, still open burns on his upper arms and legs. (the smaller wounds are manageable by link when he follows some medical instructions, [there are some medical books on the ship] the larger one is also manageable, but takes a lot longer to properly heal).

(link asks tetra and her crew to stick around for a while to keep linebeck stabilized while he’s unconscious. when linebeck wakes up, tetra and her crew are good to leave because then linebeck can better report what’s going on, and knows how to handle injuries).

linebeck’s fever persists after he wakes up, and he experiences… pretty much every fever symptom, with especially bad chills and full-body aches. the aches are really bad for the first few days after he wakes up, he’s extremely physically weak and shaky for a while, too. that weakness and shakiness get better with time, but he doesnt go entirely back to normal without actually moving around and doing things to build that strength back up.

he’s delirious and struggles to stay awake for those first few conscious days, too, which makes that weakness and shakiness worse; he struggles to eat and drink water, and struggles to string together thoughts or words to talk to link, and both of them figure out pretty quickly that they’ll have to wait a bit longer before so much as an attempt to coax him out of bed can be made.

beyond existing problems with food, linebeck struggles to keep anything down while he recovers, and becomes ill pretty much every time after he eats anything, so a bucket is kept near his bed. with water, he obviously needs to drink a lot of it considering that he’s feverish, injured, and vomiting frequently, but while he’s sick he has a bit of an irrational fear of water (along with an irrational fear of air and the wind, which makes him hesitant to go outside while he’s sick).

he’s generally pretty irritable, which isn’t particularly new, but it makes him prone to refusing help with certain things. he’s less irritable when tired and just resting. he’s also especially nervous, and despite the overall fatigue, he struggles to sleep for very long while he’s sick, and as said before, is often delirious and even confused when things are bad.

along with the other difficulties eating, linebeck has a hard time swallowing for a bit, and salivates a lot more than normal while he’s sick. he is soooo fucking dehydrated the whole time and that really doesn’t help.

while the weakness and shakiness stays for the entire time he’s sick and even a bit afterwards, for the first few days after he wakes up he’s stiff and also experiences some muscle spasms and numbness in his limbs, and has a hard time keeping his balance the first few times he gets out of bed.

once the sickness clears up fully, linebeck has to still be careful with the scar on his back; it’s sensitive to touch for a while and hurts when exposed to the sun or air for too long and when he stretches his back too far, but eventually just reaches the point where it’s a bit sensitive but is otherwise just a large scar.

obviously he’s also going through the wringer in an emotional and mental illness sense too but those would require a whole new bullet point list.
