While I (not so) patiently await season 3...

I think being on Tumblr is gonna be tough this week: I've blacklisted sp*ilers because I wanna watch the new season with my mind as free as possible (like I did for the first 2 seasons) but it means that right now my dash is 99% empty, just an endless list of blocked posts 😅 So 1. it's boring and 2. the temptation to check these hidden posts is growing bigger and bigger by the minute >< I'm not entirely sure I can make it spoiler-free 'til next Monday... But anyway, I was just thinking tonight how lucky we are to live at a time when shows like Young Royals are being made, and well-made, and successful, and so so loved by so many people.

Earlier tonight I got struck by a faint memory of a scene from an old TV show I watched when I was (way) younger and so I went on a deep search to find it. It was an old French TV show that I watched with my parents growing up and it made me laugh to check some bits of some episodes: but I ended up watching a scene where a (secondary) character comes out to his best friend (a main character on the show) and it was awful. The best friend reaction was terrible and homophobic, but treated as if it was totally normal and acceptable. And it made me so so sad, because I grew up with that, I grew up watching that. And it's probably not the only scene, the only show, the only movie with that kind of message that I've watched when I was young. I grew up in an environment, a family, that was quite close-minded. The mere concept of not being straight, not being cis, was not at all something that I was aware of at the time. We didn't talk about that with my parents or at school. And the little representations I got on TV (like this one) were pretty awful. It makes sense that it took me so long to really realize that I was neither straight nor cis, to be able to actually put words on what I had been feeling my whole life (and I'm not even done questioning it all). But yeah, growing up then meant not being exposed to the amazing representation that we have now. And I am so so so happy that young people now can have that!! That we can all have that! I am sometimes incredibly frustrated by the idea that my life would have been so so different if a show like Young Royals existed when I was growing up, when I was a teenager... Where would I be now? Who would I be now? Most of the time I'm just happy and grateful that I still managed to get where I am today, but yeah, the frustration over what feels like wasted years can rear its ugly head sometimes...

Glee was my first "Young Royals", my first fandom, my first show with a good and real and strong LGBTQ+ representation. It's the show that will always have a special place in my heart because it made me see, made me realize things about myself. It's the show that pushed me head first into queer culture and told me to "look look here! Look at these people, look at this history!". The show that took me by the hand and told me I could be strong and brave and myself. And that I was not alone. Blaine and Kurt will always be the fictional characters who helped me the most, who made me start the process of becoming myself, who started healing me.

At the time I didn't participate in the fandom life as I do now with Young Royals, because I was quite introverted and not comfortable talking to people, and still trying to figure things out about myself. But Young Royals changed that. This show arrived at the perfect time, when I felt ready for more, ready to take a step further in my healing process. Anyway, such a long rant just to say that Young Royals is incredible. It didn't change my life quite as radically as Glee did, but it is making it incredibly better! Part of it is of course due to the show itself, and Wilhelm, and Simon, and the cast (Omar!!!!). But it is also this fandom, and the people I've met and chatted with. You all have no idea how incredible you've been, how happy you've made me. How healing you've been for me. I'm realizing that I've written a whole novel in this post >< Which was not really my intention! I was mostly just thinking about how awesome our little show is, how lucky we are that we're gonna have 3 incredible seasons to watch and rewatch. And how happy I am to be part of our little fandom family 💜

So I hope you're all enjoying the season 3 content that we've been getting today (even though I don't know what it is 😱) and I'm excited to be there with you all next week to be happy and sad and unhinged as usual about our dear dear show 💜💜

The Beginning of a New Book | Chapter 4

Hamish hadn’t planned on getting up until five, but a look at the clock when his body decided it was morning told him that it was only 3:22. Even Jock was still conked out next to him like a big, fluffy stuffed toy.

He tried to go back to sleep, but his body was having none of it, and at 3:46, he dragged himself out of bed and made a cup of tea. If he was being honest with himself, he was a little nervous about the fishing trip. He’d never taken a woman out before, and he couldn’t decide if he’d invited Lacey because he wanted her to end up back in his bedroom, because he wanted to spend time with her, or because he wanted to know what the hell was up with her.

It was probably a mixture of all three. All he could do about that was pray that he was strong enough to not lean so heavily toward the first option. After all, Lacey lived here now. She wasn’t just some attractive out-of-towner looking for a good time provided by Lochdubh’s knockout constable.

He rubbed at his eyes, but the gesture did nothing to calm him. Why had he thought taking her fishing would be a good idea? She already thought it was a date. It may have been a date. How the fuck was he supposed to know?

The completist in me demands one last episode post, so here goes, bullet point style:

Two-year time skip, resulting in Pat and Chot running their own ad agency with Ae - love it

It is surprising that it took two years for Pat and Jeng to run into each other, especially if the new agency is already winning awards.

I love the new Chot-Ae-Put-Pat friend group. And yes, I'm very glad to see that Pat and Put have figured out how to be good friends again.

I literally turned the sound off during the karaoke. The secondhand embarrassment was real.

I had to watch the kitchen conversation twice to understand everything they were saying. (Jeng is too distracting when he’s sad.) I would have liked it better if this had been the first conversation of many, while they worked up to being boyfriends again, but that’s also really unrealistic for a romance.

I did really really like it, don’t get me wrong.

The reunion after the kitchen reconciliation felt rushed. Although I suspect it actually wasn't, because it did feel like there were more time skips involved and that what we saw was a speedrun of their new relationship.

More cake!

It took me way too long to figure out they were in an IKEA at the end. Also, that was the weirdest way to end a series. (Yes, I get that it was a hark back to their 'date.' It was still weirdly presented, since it was part of the whole relationship speedrun, which made it feel like another domestic moment at home.

Final thoughts:

I’m glad the show is over and have zero interest in watching it again. At the same time, I’m very impressed by Man Trisanu and am looking forward to seeing what his next project is.

Here’s my recommended watching order for season 2! As much as I care about the international release order, I think there’s a better way to watch the show that reflects characterization and plot development. I know people like to also use the order the episodes were made in, but there would be a few plot points out of order, so I prefer mine.

That said, keep in mind this order is only a suggestion, the show is episodic so you can watch most episodes in any order without “ruining” the show.

Justifications (mild sp-ilers)

Santa Claws: I know this originally aired before season 2 premiered, and it doesn’t even take place in season 2’s timeline anyway. However, to follow the theme introduced in Collector (but before Gorizilla), I placed it in season 2, but I didn’t want it to be the very first in the season so it’s a few episodes in. 

Frightningale: this one is a bit of a shakeup, because while I was mostly good about not giving characters cameos before a formal debut, I made an exception here. While it does cameo someone, I felt this episode was better place before Queens’ Battle because of someone’s characterization. 

Anansi: this episode features the skating rink, which we don’t properly see until Frozer. While I’d like it to be after Frozer, the latter episode has a ton of prerequisites that, when added up, mean it’s definitely after Anansi. Think of the brief skating scene, then, as a call-forward.

Queens’ Battle arc: besides the fairly obvious need to be placed after two other specific episodes, a couple other episodes included characterization that lead up to the Queens’ Battle. I tried to space them out in the first half of the season, but other prerequisites meant that Queens’ Battle was going to be fairly late this season. 

Whether for the first time or for a more precise rewatch, I hope you enjoy season 2 as we wait for number 3!

Wayward Children books 2-5 Review

I compiled my reviews for the rest of this series into one post for the simple fact that I read them all so quickly. My thoughts changed hour by hour and so I wanted to get them all in one place.

Down Among the Sticks and Bones (book 2)

I found this a fascinating exploration of Jack and Jill’s characters. The takes on gender roles and parental expectations were hard hitting and real, I really felt bad for these girls with their ridiculous parents. The Moors were just the right amount of creepy in my opinion; the danger was there and known but it wasn’t scary to the point where I found it difficult to read. I could appreciate the grimness of the world without being put off by it. I do think as a backstory it was very good, but I think if I had picked it up as a stand-alone I would have been less interested in it. Knowing what became of the girls after the end of the book while I was reading it upped the tension and the desire to find out exactly how that had happened, and if I had been taking it at face value as an adventure story without the big consequences after the end I wouldn’t have been so invested I think. That being said, I really enjoyed it and I was excited to get through to the next book Jack was in. 

Here are my thoughts on the characters as they stand by the end of this book:

Jack: I relate a lot to Jack in this. I kept forgetting she was a girl in the first book and she was mostly a character that was vaguely interesting but not someone I could relate to, so this connection was unexpected. Her OCD (or what looks like it anyway) is probably a big factor in this, but she’s also very queer, though not in the same way as me. Very relatable. Her struggle with caring about her sister while also being a victim of her was also pulled off wonderfully. She was the one I was rooting for in this.

Dr Bleak: I thought that Dr Bleak would be cruel or heartless, but I was pleasantly surprised. He’s a stern, practical man, but he cares for Jack and treats her well. He wants her to stay and to flourish in the Moors, and aside from toughening her up a bit for practicality’s sake he doesn’t want to change her.

Jill: She annoyed me. I understood why she is so messed up, but there’s no doubt in my mind that she is a villain in this. Certain events didn’t need to happen but she wanted them to, and ruined lives while doing so, and so any sympathy for her for what the Master did to her immediately vanished.

Beneath the Sugar Sky (book 3)

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The adventures through the realms were super exciting, as was seeing the original characters (from the first book that is) Rini was hilarious but also had depth and I felt so sad for her. I also nearly decided to count the amount of times people said vagina because of her but decided that would be far too difficult since it got mentioned a lot in a short space of time. She’s truly a character that one. I was surprised that Rini wasn’t the main character, not that there really are main characters in this book, but we mostly see things from the perspective of Cora, who I thought was nice but the self consciousness and self hatred got a bit much with her at times. She’s a byproduct of bullying and it’s all a bit dark in her head. I did enjoy her character though. The adventure was great. I was on the edge the whole time, because I felt Sumi’s death in the first book was super tragic and shocking, so I was rooting for them to fix that little hiccup the whole time. I’m also hoping that we get to see more of Layla in future books, because I feel she has great potential and could end up being a fave of mine. The illustration of her really made me in awe. Most of the illustrations in this book were lovely, but that one in particular was gorgeous.

In An Absent Dream (book 4)

This review is going to be a longer one, as I have a lot of feelings about this book. First, Lundy's tale was by far the most high-stakes and stressful for me so far in the series, barring the actual murder plot of the first book. Something about the way it was written, I'm guessing. With every new development I was more and more on edge; by the halfway point I was convinced something terrible was going to happen to Moon because of her increasing debts, and 3/4 in I had to put the book down for a day because it got so intense. The Goblin Market itself seems like a cruel and unforgiving place, even as the people within are all caring for each other. The descriptions were reminiscent of a Studio Ghibli setting, and I could see the appeal, at least aesthetically. The rules were what made it seem cruel to me, so I guess I would never have had a door there myself. One thing I didn't really call was that final scene at the market... [sp*ilers over on my goodreads ]

I related to and grew frustrated with Lundy in equal measure. Every time she made a sensible move it seemed as though she made an equally stupid decision not long afterwards. Knowing her far off future just made that frustration worse. The whole time she was in the Goblin Market or making plans to go back to the Market, I couldn't help but think of her poor family. How awful would it be to be treated like she treated them, to be discarded like she discarded them? She never felt guilt for all the worry she caused them, not even when she ran away for 2 years. Sure, sending her to boarding school was a bad move, but so was running away without even a note to say goodbye.

I suppose sometimes the best someone can do isn't the right thing to do, and this book sort of drills that message into your head, what with all the mistakes these characters make all the way, and the prices they have to pay.

Come Tumbling Down (book 5)

I had a prediction for this book: Jack was going to be turned into a vampire because Jill could no longer become one. The real events seemed far more ridiculous and a bit funny, until, as all things relating to the Moors, reality set in and it quickly turned horrifying. The way Jack fell apart due to her circumstances was absolutely heartbreaking and... well, let's just say it hit too close to home. The quest itself was fantastic - I enjoy when characters react to other worlds, and the way the rest of Jack's world was explored in more depth was fascinating. This story was the one I had been waiting for since reading Down Among the Sticks and Bones, where the girls could have gone in any direction and ended up away from the Moors, so the fact that we get to see one of those other directions in the form of the Drowned Gods was exciting and fulfilling. The conclusion to Jack and Jill's story was satisfying to the maximum. It was dark and real and exciting, the perfect ending to their story arcs, and though it all got wrapped up perfectly (to my tastes) and the story of Jack and Jill is over, Jack's story is really beginning anew. She does have a threat still lurking over her after the end, and it allows speculation as we are left to wonder what happens to her after [sp*ilers redacted]

Definitely one of my favourites of the series.

Of course! I wouldn’t want any of my followers to be spoiled, let alone myself! Same here, it’s not that simple because I also have practically every combination of got sp*iler/leak tags filtered on both xkit and tumblr filtering so at a certain point it isn’t our fault for not wanting to be spoiled. Same, I saw one thing too. The only consolation I can give is that sometimes the leaks don’t end up being true. But I’m sorry you were spoiled, it really sucks :/

We have reached the point in romance dramas that I both do and don’t enjoy, especially when I’m watching as it airs weekly. Most of the time, I enjoy the angst of it all, as the couple experiences conflict, because I know that they will find their way back to each other in the end.

However, when the nature of the conflict is stupid, then I get frustrated. LOL

Exhibit A: Step By Step, episode 10

Jeng and Pat’s decisions in this episode are exactly what I was hoping wouldn’t happen. As this is a common romance setup, I like seeing the different ways it can be resolved. This is the worst version.

Jeng and Part are so involved with each other (understandable, since it’s new and they’re fully in the honeymoon stage) that they’re not paying attention to their surroundings and have run aground.

Pat also seems to have no understanding of why it’s a bad idea to date the boss, because he keeps trying to convince Jeng not to resign. And I get it. He loves Jeng and Jeng has been a great boss, helping him improve at his job and feel more confident in his professional life. Of course he doesn’t want Jeng to leave. But you can’t have both*, not in the world of this particular drama at least.
