In IVI's case, having been implanted in the Operative - a person who did choose to become a tool of Scytha, and who not only willingly but gleefully participates in that work - is a significant factor. As far as Rohan's concerned, this alone is a perversion of the 'intent' behind AI: given that the Operative chose Scytha, IVI’s more likely to develop into an individual who would also chose Scytha and their work, whereas if implanted in someone else, that might be different.

Does that make that hypothetical choice invalid? Is it a choice made under duress if she was deliberately implanted in a person Scytha knows would choose them? Would IVI, as implanted in another person, be more or less of a corporate tool? Would a person who encourages her sentient development be an objectively better host? Would she be happier, and is that the most important thing? The thing with AI is that there is so much potential, and it can be directed in so many ways, it’s impossible to develop it in an entirely unbiased way. On top of all this, the fact that IVI is entirely reliant on her host for her consciousness is in itself a problem - by design, she has little to no bodily autonomy, and therefore her host has significantly more control over her experience of consciousness than they would over another human being.

For [redacted] reasons, Rohan is very… emotionally tied-in to AI, and this prevents xem from being truly objective. Xe’s projecting a lot of really quite idealistic ideas onto IVI, and has a fair few preconceptions that xe is going to struggle to let go of. A lot of the personality/intelligent development that AI goes through following implantation is pretty opaque, and it's hard to know what, exactly, is imparted from the host and how - Rohan's aware of this, but it's one thing to know it intellectually and another to see it in action.

So, to answer your question - xe really hasn’t thought that much about the practicalities of it - xe just knows Scytha did it wrong. There are elements of nature vs nurture to it, with the Operative/Scytha representing the ‘nurture’ aspect and the original programming representing ‘nature’; the ideal host would be a person essentially willing to take on the parental role, with more of an interest (more than Rohan perceives the Operative as having, at least) in developing IVI’s self-cognizance and independence, and not someone with such an obvious agenda as a Scytha employee. Not xemself, but not you either.

That being said - obviously, Rohan is also an incredibly biased person, and xir ideas about what Should be done with AI will differ from other people's, even people's outside of Scytha :-)

You found yourself in the presence of Fury, Sam, Bucky and Sharon upon going back inside the compound.

“A word, please.” Fury commanded, leading the way back to the conference room.

The tables seemed to have turned the moment you went back into the conference room, with you now being the subject of interrogation.

“Secretary Ross failed to inform us of the details of your involvement with the Avengers. Care to enlighten us?” Sam pressed.

“Just like what the secretary said, I’m here for Barnes. I really couldn’t care less about the others.” You said, looking over at Bucky who ironically, was the only one who didn’t seem to care.

“And how exactly are you going to do your job? You gonna tag along with us in missions? Take videos of us, jot down our daily routines in your little notebook-“

“Sam.” Sharon reprimanded the latter, shooting you an apologetic stare.

Fury cleared his throat and sat down across from you, “Agent, I do understand what the government is trying to do here. But I can’t have you join them in missions for the sole fact that we don’t want any casualties involved.” He explained.

Were they really belittling you? They did hear Secretary Ross when they mentioned that you were under the US Secret Services, right?

“I am capable of myself, sir. I’m a trained agent and it is my job to make sure that people are protected from-“

“Me, yeah I get it.” Bucky interrupted, rubbing his temples from frustration.

“From possible threats or whatsoever.” You corrected.

“And the government thinks I am a possible threat. Sounds like the same thing.” He said.

“Which is why I am here. To keep an eye on you and see whether you are indeed a threat. Or not.” You defended yourself. “I’m not the foe here, Mister Barnes. I’m just doing my job.”

Before Sam could even make the banter worse, Fury made sure to conclude the discussion.

“If that’s the case, then welcome to the Avengers, agent.” Fury said.

Sam turned to him incredulously, “I can’t believe you’re simply allowing the government to interfere with us.”

Fury stood up and headed towards the door, “Because there are no other options. If you’ve nothing to hide from the government then there should be no problem with her joining us.”

With the Sokovian Accords still in full effect, you knew that Fury didn’t have any other choice but to obey the government. It was unfair for the Accords to remain being carried out, especially after the Avengers’ help in dealing with Thanos. But what the government wants, the government gets.

You turned to look at Sam who shook his head in defeat. He walked out of the conference room followed by Sharon who offered you a kind smile. You were about to stand up as well until you realized that Bucky seemed to be stalling.

“Do you believe them?” He asked out of the blue, still seated on one of the chairs.

“Believe who?”

“The government. They think I’m still capable of doing bad stuff, huh?” He looked down at his fingers, metal and flesh alike as he fiddled with the hem of his shirt.

When you were assigned this specific task, the government had briefed you about your subject. They were pretty adamant to give him pardon, despite his contribution in taking down HYDRA and Thanos. Even after T’challa vouching for Bucky’s stability, the government was still pretty much against his freedom. It was only because of the number of people showing support for him that they decided to push through the pardon. Of course if they didn’t, they’d be facing a lot of backlash and that was the last thing the government wanted to receive from their people.

“I’m on neither side, Mister Barnes. Until something is proven, I’m staying on the grey area. What I can reassure you though, is that I’m not an enemy.” You said and got up to leave.

“Bucky.” He spoke up, standing up as well.

“I’m sorry?”

“Call me Bucky. My friends call me that.” He said.

You stared at him in contemplation. Sure, you were supposed to check whether he was finally stable and free from HYDRA. But you were afraid that being his friend would make setting boundaries difficult. Your job required you to be stern and unbiased.

As much as you wanted to be a friend to Bucky, you knew that it was going to make things complicated.

“Me not being the enemy doesn’t make us friends. I’ll see you tomorrow, Mister Barnes.”

Chapter 7 - Don't Shoot The Messenger

Alfie’s Bakery. Camden Town, London.

Nicole did not in fact sleep few just a few hours. She slept for 8. She startled awake suddenly to the sound of voices and footsteps approaching the office door. Shit, she definitely recognised them. Alfie and Thomas’ distinctive accents had already become far too familiar to her. Nicole’s first instinct was to hide, but a cursory glance over the room showed that this would not be possible. Alright, she thought, plan B, pretend I’m not here and maybe they won’t see me. No? Righty-o plan C, play it cool and run back to Birmingham as soon as possible. That one sounded best to her.

The door swung open, just as she rose from the sofa “Ah there she is! Shalom birdy! You really should look after your birds a bit better Tommy, right, because this one was planning on sleeping in a pile of hay.” Tommy’s cool blue eyes swept up and down her frame, the ice melting just a touch when he saw she was alright. “She’s free to make her own choices Alfie, especially considering she likes to think herself a bit of a businesswoman, ey sweetheart?” Before Nicole had the opportunity to answer what she was pretty sure was a rhetorical question, Alfie cut back in “A businesswoman! That is great, innit? Because you clearly are not a Peaky, from your lack of, well, ridiculous cap. So you can be the unbiased third party. Keep us honest right.” For some reason whenever Alfie opened his mouth, Nicole felt thrown off her game. With Tommy it was easy to battle wits, but with Alfie, everything was so unexpected. She glanced over at Tommy, unsure of what to do in the situation, the slight turn of his head indicated that he clearly also thought she should leave. They were finally in agreement then. “I appreciate your hospitality Alfie, but I think I should go.” “Nonsense, see Tommy here needs us to have this little sit down and make a deal. Now the only way I’m going to fucking have that little chat is if you’re there as well. So there isn’t really much of a choice, right.” Tommy sighed, he had heard stories about Alfie Solomons’…personality, but he had not quite expected this. Nevertheless, “Sit down sweetheart.” He sighed, and Nicole complied sitting in one of the big leather armchairs opposite Alfie with Tommy by her side.

Alfie reached into his desk pulling out a dark bottle “Well, rum's for fun and fucking, innit? So, whisky, now that...That is for business.” Moving to pour the amber liquid into three glasses until Tommy interrupted “Let's talk first, eh?” Alfie scratched his thick beard “Suit yourself.” Leaning back he continued “I hear that you are involved with policemen, and you see, I don’t like them. Cannot be trusted. Can they birdy?” turning towards Nicole. Again before she could answer Tommy interrupted her “Sabini also uses policemen, which is why he is winning your war in London and you are losing.” “Right and I was speaking to the little lady. Don’t be rude mate.” That pulled a smile from the girl, always nice when someone else also knocked Tommy down to size. With a cheeky smile she answered “Well Alfie, I’m not too big a fan of coppers. They get in the way.” Tommy shot her a glare that promised repercussions for speaking against him, but she just smirked back at him. “Nevertheless, Alfie you are losing.” “A war ain’t over until its over, mate. So don't come in here and sit there in my chair and tell me that I'm losing my war to a fucking wop.” Slamming his hands against the surface of his desk with a resounding bang; god, Nicole was regretting not just running out. What were they going to do? Stop her? She really did not want blood on her nice coat and this meeting was looking at becoming more and more violent by the second. “I say we join forces.” Nicole shot a bewildered look at the gangster next to her, first he insults Alfie and then he expects to form an alliance. Men really did not have any tact. But Alfie looked to be considering it! Honestly! What was wrong with them? “What do you think little bird?” Shit, this was probably not a good time to continue testing Tommy’s patience “I would…” Shooting a glance at the icy eyes boring into her “…want to know what his plan was?” “Mhm well mate, go on. Tell us your plan.” With a sigh of relief from Nicole, Tommy began detailing his plan in getting rid of Sabini once and for all.

It took another hour, until the men sealed the deal and a shot of whiskey was poured. Nicole had started tuning out as soon as the situation had de-escalated, this was well above her pay, and frankly she didn’t quite care. None of this involved her at the moment so it was not worth any effort. Although she did appreciate the shot of alcohol. “Now fuck off out of my office, mate. And you, don’t fly too far away birdy, I’ll be seeing you yeah.” That was enough for Nicole, she shot off through the office door and was already halfway through the factory when- “Nicole.” She stopped in her tracks. Tommy’s footsteps came closer, and a cloud of white smoke appeared from her right. Tommy also stopped beside her, taking in another drag before stubbing out the cigarette with his shoe. “Come along, I’ll give you a ride.”

Which is how she found herself sitting silently next to Tommy as he drove along the London roads in the direction of Birmingham. “So…” Nicole started, unable to take the silence any longer “That went well.” Tommy didn’t take his eyes of the road “You think so, eh?” “Well, this is the second meeting I’ve had with you where no one died. I think it’s going pretty well, and, as a bonus, you made a new friend. Sounds like a pretty good day to me.” He looked over at her from the corner of his eye, a small smile gracing his lips. “If that is your measure of a successful day then you really are not suited to being a businesswoman.” Nicole made an affronted sound “Maybe you should-“ “We also do not call it “Making a friend” Alfie is an ally.” “Right two things, one, the…tension, in that room would suggest differently-“ “Exc-“ “Ah ah ah, this brings me on to my second thing, stop bloody interrupting me! Don’t be rude.” Tommy’s mouth snapped shut, and in Nicole’s opinion this was the highlight of her day. Due to her lack of means Nicole had never had the opportunity to explore activities she enjoyed; up until now the only thing she enjoyed was running, but now, now she could safely add shutting Tommy up to her list.

It was silent for a few minutes before Tommy spoke up again “We’re making a stop along the way, I need you to deliver this card to a boy named Henry without anyone realising.” Handing over a little card with the Shelby’s watery lane address and telephone number on it. “Sure, that’ll be one shilling.” He gave a long-suffering sigh. He really did do that a lot, she thought, he could definitely use a dose of happiness. Despite his quiet complaints he flicked a coin into her lap. “Great, always lovely doing business with you. Do you have anything more than just a first name?” “You’ll be earning that coin, sweetheart. Don’t disappoint me.” They pulled up at the edge of a picturesque little village, the complete opposite of Birmingham. Without another word Nicole hopped out ducking behind a shed. This definitely was not the easiest delivery; the whole town was spread out with lots of sunny open spaces. She would have loved running through the fields on an ordinary day, but for her current task, it was not ideal. As a farmer walked past, she continued moving parallel to Tommy who was making his way towards a woman in front of a quaint little house.

Right, she decided, her target probably had something to do with the woman. She observed the house for a moment before she saw a brown-haired man peeking out of a window on the first floor. Considering Henry was a man’s name, and her target was probably in that house, she was guessing that this was Henry. Perfect, now to get into the house. She crouched down and crept towards the back of the house, out of view. There she saw an open window, gauzy curtains floating in the breeze. Taking a slight running jump she caught the edge of the windowsill, before pulling herself up so she could peer inside. Deeming the room empty she launched herself up and forward into the room, silent. She was inside in seconds. Nicole crept along the hallway to the room she’d seen the man in, looking through the keyhole she saw that the man was facing away from the door. Quietly, she slipped inside the room and crept up behind the man. In a split second, she had him pressed against the wall with a hand shoved over his mouth. “Shh. I am not here to hurt you, I have a message for a Henry. Are you Henry?” The man quickly nodded as they heard a woman’s raised voice from outside. She slipped the card into the man’s pocket “Message from Thomas Shelby.” Before the man could even think to yell or protest Nicole had already slipped back outside and was already sat in the car by the time Tommy made it back. “That was child’s play. Think my time went better than yours.” “You delivered the card to the boy in the window then.” “Yes sir. Think I might have scared him a bit.” “Sir? This mean you’re going to start respecting me again?” Tommy smirked “Oh yes my lord, I worship the earth on which you walk. How you bless me by letting me breathe the same air.” “Cheeky rat” but this time the name had no bite behind it, it was almost fond.

Birmingham

Another hour later Tommy dropped Nicole off outside of the Midland Hotel, before continuing on to whatever other important business Thomas Shelby had to attend to. “Oi up here Nic!” From the veranda of the second floor came Will’s voice, behind him was an open door to what she presumed was their new room. She bounded up the metal staircase, taking the step two at a time. Eager to be surrounded by her people again. Inside the room was a little kitchenette and seven bed rolls side by side, currently being used as a settee by the room’s occupants. “Hey Nic! Saw you stepping out of Thomas Shelby’s car, how very cosy.” Nina winked at her “Alright, alright. If you all must know he gave me a ride back after the meeting, which went very well, by the way, thank you for your concern towards my wellbeing.” Nicole bit back sarcastically. “You’re still alive and breathing, that’s good enough for us.” Nej laughed before carrying on “Never mind that, we bought a change of nicer clothes for our night out. Including a dress for you, get changed.”

Nicole went behind the curtain, taking off her prized coat and old clothes before unwrapping the bandage that kept her chest secure whilst running around. Relishing in the freedom and relief it brought, before putting on proper underclothes for the first time in years. She followed this by quickly putting on the dress, stockings, and shoes before walking back out from her spot to show the others. “It looks perfect on you!” exclaimed Nina as the others hollered at her. It really was lovely, the ruby red dress hit her at knee length and ended in a fringe of tassels that moved with every step she took. The dress was clearly pre-owned as a few of the gems lining the dipped neckline were missing, but it was still the nicest thing she had ever worn. At least besides the coat. “So where are we going first?” “We were thinking Marquis first, and then maybe we could see the brand-new Garrison.” With that the group set off down the street, out in the open for once instead of hiding in the shadows.

They entered through the double doors into the bustling Marquis, the lads immediately making their way to the bar to get them a round of drinks whilst the rest of them found a table to sit. The pub was absolutely packed with more than half of the customers already drunk and the other half making a valiant effort to get plastered. Which suited their groups’ plans just fine. The lads returned with a whole bottle of brown rum and a stack of shot glasses, perfect for a good time. “Alright ladies drinking game time, I think we’ll start off with Categories.” Cheered Jaspar, handing out filled glasses. “Let’s start easy, animals.” They went around the group “Cat” “Dog” “Bird” on and on, the animals quickly becoming more exotic. The kinds they had heard about whilst hiding out in the school but would never see in real life. That was until Will slipped up and said “Marmamillo.” “What on earth is that?” laughed Nina “You know the small thing with armour on its back.” “Oh no mate, I think you mean Armadillo. Maybe you were paying too much attention to one of the boys in the class to listen carefully, drink up!” The played the game until there was only enough rum left for one shot, all of them having become rather drunk.

“Next category is…Shelby family members” Said Nej, smirking at Nicole. Their words had all started to slur a bit as each of them became more and more inebriated. “What? What are you looking at me for?” “No reason hun, none at all.” They started clockwise again, “Arthur Shelby” “John Shelby” “Ada Shelby” “Polly Gray” then it was Nicole’s turn, and well, there was only one left “Thomas Shelby!” which meant that Kaz being next in line automatically lost and had to take the final shot. Nina poked Nicole in the side “Of course you would manage to remember his name Nicole.” “It doesn’t mean anything. He was the only one left! It’s not that I think about him regularly…just his eyes, and his face…and sometimes his voice-“ Luckily Kaz broke in before she could drunkenly embarrass herself any further. The rest of them of course thought this was the most hilarious thing they had heard in months, and were laughing it up “Called it! I take full credit as being the first person to notice, shit, we should’ve made a bet or something. I could’ve won good money.” Whined Nina. “Alright alright, everyone drink a glass of water before we leave and hopefully the cold air will sober everyone up a bit.” Kaz said whilst passing the water around. Because the group had never had the opportunity to drink in an actual establishment before, Kaz had taken it upon himself to stay as sober as possible so he could keep an eye on everyone. The last thing he wanted was for one of them to get hurt, especially to one of his girls. He had spent enough nights stopping disgusting men from taking advantage of drunken ladies, he never wanted one of his own to end up in a position like that.

The group did in fact sober up quickly as soon as they stepped out into the frigid air, leaving behind the boisterous sounds of the pub. The Runners were happy though, happier than they had been in a very long time. Their lives were very different to most people who lived in Small Heath considering they survived solely on the streets, but now that things were looking up, it was almost like a dream. To the kids who had grown up with nothing, tonight was like living in a fairy tale. As Nicole looked at the merry faces surrounding her, she vowed to get them anything they ever wanted out of life.

The Garrison was even more packed than the Marquis, probably due to its grand reopening. Nicole thought it looked rather ridiculous with all that blinding gold, then again, what did she know about class? They pulled each other through the crowded room and ended up finding a spot along the bar, this time Nicole sipped her gin content to soak up the atmosphere. Interjecting every once in a while, as Nina and Jaspar teased Will about the time he was frightened by a little lamb and listening in on Kaz and Nej’s conversation about how best to pick a lock. Typical. Looking around the room she saw that the Shelby’s had entered the main bar area.

It was clear that there was some sort of conflict going on between the heads of the Shelby clan, Polly and Tommy. Thinking back to earlier in the car, he really could do with a dose of happiness. The man was one of the most successful people in Birmingham, more money than anyone else in Small Heath and yet here she was; dirt poor and living on the streets until yesterday, and still far happier than he was. Nicole made her way over to Tommy, spurred on in part by the liquid courage and in other part because she did not like seeing people upset. “I would offer to buy you a drink, but you own the bar.” She gave him a smile. Downing his drink, he turned to her “The drinks would be on the house regardless sweetheart.” “Another benefit to the name.” He stared at her, for a second longer than she was comfortable with. “Dance with me.” He stated, already starting to pull her towards the dance floor “Wow hold on there Mr Thomas Shelby, I’m pretending I’m not the street rat everyone is so fond of calling me tonight. I’d like to be asked as a proper lady.” Thomas stopped, and regarded her with a soft look in his eyes, he whispered so quietly she barely heard “I don’t think you’re a rat.” before bowing down slightly and sticking out his hand in an exaggerated fashion “May I have this dance Lady Nicole of the Runners?” she let out a laugh before accepting “You may my Lord” letting him pull her along.

She had never really danced before, only once in a while with one of the lads on top of the warehouse when one of them had managed to get their hands on some better-quality alcohol. It was definitely not the same though, she decided, as his warm hand rested against her back. Tommy led her along to the lively upbeat music, not caring that his dance partner was…lacking in the skills department. He spun her, making the golden walls blur in front of her eyes and a bubble of laughter escape her. This must be what heaven feels like, she thought. “You’ve had a fair bit to drink, ey?” Tommy asked, the corners of his lips curling into a smile. “I don’t need to be drunk to be happy Tommy. You’ve made me happy, you’re the reason we were able to afford a night like this.” “Don’t underestimate yourself sweetheart, I only agreed to your terms. You are the real reason for tonight. You look after your family, the same way I look after mine.” Staring into his eyes she whispered, “You and I aren’t so different then.” Tommy started to lean his head towards her, pulling her in closer, before his eyes flickered to something over her shoulder. He sighed, the frustrated, cold look returning to his gaze. “Go home. I don’t need my messenger rats unwell tomorrow.” Shoving her in the direction of the rest of the group. Nicole glared at him “I take it back, we’re clearly very different people. I don’t let fear control me, and I certainly hope I’m a lot kinder than you.” He stopped “Of course we aren’t alike, how could we be? You are nothing whereas I am Thomas Shelby. Clearly being kind doesn’t get you very far ey?” Thomas moved into the private room, slamming the door behind him. Screw what Thomas Shelby says, she thought turning to the group at the bar “Get me another drink please.”

If/when they make a Joe/Nicky prequel movie, what are some of the Dos and Don’ts for them, with regards to historical accuracy. Like, what do you think they should include, and what do you think they should avoid?

Oof. This is a GREAT question, and also designed to give me a chance to ramble on in a deeply, deeply self-indulgent fashion. That is now what will proceed to happen. Consider yourself warned. So if they were miraculously to be like “well that qqueenofhades person on tumblr seems like she knows what she’s talking about, let’s hire her to consult on this production!”, here are some of the things I would tell them.

First off, a question I have in fact asked my students when teaching the crusades in class is whether you could actually show the sack of Jerusalem on screen. Like... if you’re making a film about the First Crusade, what kind of choices are you going to make? What narrative viewpoint are you going to uphold throughout the story? Are you actually going to show a slaughter of Muslim and Jewish inhabitants that some chroniclers described as causing enough blood to reach up to the knees of horses? (Whether it actually did this is beside the point; the point is that the sack went far beyond the accepted conventions of warfare and struck everybody involved in it as particularly horrific.) Because when you’re making a film about the crusades, you are also making it by nature for a modern audience that has particular understandings of Christian/Muslim conflict, religious warfare and/or tolerance, the War on Terror, the modern clash over ISIS, Trump’s Muslim ban, and so forth. The list goes on and on. So you’re never making a straight, unbiased historical adaptation, even if you’re going off the text of primary sources. You’re still constructing it and presenting it in a deliberate and curated fashion, and you can bet that whichever way you come down, your audience will pick up on that.

Let’s take the most recent example of a high-profile crusades film: Kingdom of Heaven from 2005. I’ve written a book chapter on how the narrative choices of KoH, aside from its extensive fictionalization of its subject matter to start with, make it crystal clear that it is a film made by a well-meaning Western liberal filmmaker (Ridley Scott) four years after 9/11 and two years after the invasion of Iraq, when the sympathy from 9/11 was wearing off and everyone saw America/Great Britain and the Bush/Blair coalition overreaching itself in yet another arrogant imperial adventure into the Middle East. Depending on how old you are, you may or may not remember the fact that Bush explicitly called the War on Terror a “crusade” at the start, and then was quickly forced to walk it back once it alarmed his European allies (yes, back then, as bad as America was, it still did have those) with its intellectual baggage. They KNEW exactly what images and tropes they were invoking. It is also partly why medieval crusade studies EXPLODED in popularity after 9/11. Everyone recognized that these two things had something to do with each other, or they made the connection somehow. So anyone watching KoH in 2005 wasn’t really watching a crusades film (it is set in the late 1180s and dramatizes the surrender of Jerusalem to Saladin) so much as a fictional film about the crusades made for an audience explicitly IN 2005. I have TONS to say on this subject (indeed, if you want a copy of my book chapter, DM me and I’ll be happy to send it.)

Ridley Scott basically sets it up as the Christian and Muslim secular leaders themselves aren’t evil, it’s all the religious fanatics (who are all made Templars, including Guy de Lusignan, going back to the “evil Templar” trope started by Sir Walter Scott and which we are all so very familiar with from Dan Brown and company). Orlando Bloom’s character shares a name (Balian de Ibelin) but very little else with the eponymous real-life crusader baron. One thing Scott did do very well was casting an actual and well-respected Syrian actor (Ghassan Massoud) to play Saladin and depicting him in essential fidelity to the historical figure’s reputed traits of justice, fairness, and mercy (there’s some article by a journalist who watched the film in Beirut with a Muslim audience and they LOVED the KoH Saladin). I do give him props for this, rather than making the Evil Muslim into the stock antagonist. However, Orlando Bloom’s Balian is redeemed from the religious extremist violence of the Templars (shorthand for all genuinely religious crusaders) by essentially being an atheistic/agnostic secular humanist who wants everyone to get along. As I said, this is a film about the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq made three years after 9/11 more than anything else, and you can really see that.

That said, enough about KoH, back to this presumable Joe/Nicky backstory. You would obviously run into the fact that it’s SUPER difficult to make a film about the crusades without offending SOMEBODY. The urge to paint in broad strokes and make it all about the evil Westerners invading is one route, but it would weaken the moral complexity of the story and would probably make it come off as pandering to guilty white liberal consciences. Are we gonna touch on the many decades of proto-crusading ventures in Iberia, Sicily, North Africa, and other places, and how the eleventh century, especially under Pope Gregory VII, made it even thinkable for a Christian to be a holy warrior in the first place? (It was NOT normal beforehand.) How are we going to avoid the “lololol all religion sucks and makes people do crazy things” axe to grind favoured by So Very Smart (tm) internet atheists? Yes, we have to demonstrate the ultimate horror of the crusade and the flawed premises it was based on, but we can’t do that by just showing the dirty, religiously zealot medieval people doing that because they don’t know any better and are being cynically manipulated in God’s Name. In other words (and the original TOG film did this very well) we can’t position ourselves to laugh at or mock the crusader characters or feel confident in looking down on them for being Dumb Zealots. They have to be relatable enough that we realize we could BE (and in fact already ARE) them, and THEN you slide into the horror and what compels them to do those kinds of things, and THAT’S when it hits. Because take a look at the news. This is happening around us right now.

Obviously, as I was doing in my First Crusade chapter in DVLA, a lot of this also has to spend time centering the Muslim point of view, the way they reacted to the crusade, the ways in which Yusuf as an Isma’ili Shia Muslim (Kaysani is the name of a branch of Isma’ili Shi’ites, he has a definite historical context and family lineage, and hence is almost surely, as I wrote him, a Fatimid from Egypt) is likewise not just A Stock Muslim. In this case, obviously: Get actual Muslims on the set to advise about the details. Don’t make stupid and/or obvious mistakes. Don’t necessarily make the Muslims less faithful or less virtuous than the Christians (even if this is supposed to praise them as being “less fanatic” than those bad religious Catholics). Don’t tokenize or trivialize their reaction to something as horrific as the sack of Jerusalem, and don’t just use dead brown bodies as graphic visual porn for cheap emotional points. Likewise, it goes without saying, and I don’t think they would anyway, but OH MY GOD DON’T MAKE THIS INTO GAME OF THRONES GRIMDARK!!!! OH MY GOD!!! THERE IS BEAUTY AND THERE IS LIGHT AND THERE IS POETRY AND THAT’S WHY IT HURTS SO MUCH WHEN IT’S DESTROYED! AND THE CHOICES THAT PEOPLE MAKE TO DESTROY THOSE THINGS HAVE TO BE TERRIFYINGLY PLAUSIBLE AND FAMILIAR, BECAUSE OH MY GOD!!

Next, re: Nicolo. Evidently he is a priest or a former priest or something of the sort in the graphic novel, which becomes a bit of a problem if we want him to actually FIGHT in the crusades for important and/or shallow and/or OTP purposes. (I don’t know if they address this somehow or Greg Rucka is not a medieval historian or whatever, but never mind.) It was a Major Thing that priests could not carry weapons, at least and especially bladed weapons. (In the Bayeux Tapestry, we have Odo, the bishop of Bayeux, fighting at the battle of Hastings with a truncheon because he’s a clergyman and can’t have a sword). They were super not supposed to shed blood, and a broadsword (such as the type that Nicky has and carries and is clearly very familiar with) is a knight’s weapon, not a clergyman’s. The thing about priests was that they were not supposed to get their hands dirty with physical warfare; they could (and often did) accompany crusade armies, bishops were secular overlords and important landholders, monks and hermits and other religious preachers were obviously part of a religious expedition, and yes, occasionally some priests would break the rules and fight in battle. But this was an exception FAR more than the rule. So if we’re going by accuracy, we have Nicky as a priest who doesn’t actively fight and doesn’t have a sword, we have him as a rule-breaking priest with a sword (which would have to be addressed, and the Templars, who were basically armed monks, weren’t founded until 1119 so he can’t be one of those yet if this is still 1099) or we just skip the priest part and have him as a crusader with a sword like any other soldier. If he was in fact a priest, he also wouldn’t be up to the same standard of sending into battle. Boys, especially younger sons of the nobility, often entered the church at relatively early ages (12 or 13), where it was treated as a career, and hence they stopped training in arms. So if Nicky is actually out there fighting and/or getting killed by Yusuf several times for Important Purposes, he’s... almost surely not a priest.

Iirc, they’ve already changed a few things from the graphic novel (I haven’t read it, but this is what I’ve heard) so they can also tweak things to make a new backstory or a hybrid-new backstory in film-verse. So once we’ve done all the above, we still have to decide how to handle the actual sack of Jerusalem and massacre of its inhabitants, the balance between violence comparable to the original TOG film and stopping short of being exploitative (which I think they would do well), and the aftermath of that and the founding of the new Latin Christian kingdom. It would have to, as again the original film does very well, avoid prioritizing the usual players and viewpoints in these events, and dig into presenting the experiences of the marginalized and way in which ordinary people are brought to the point of doing these things. It doesn’t (and frankly shouldn’t) preach at us that U.S. Invasions Of The Middle East Are Bad (especially since obviously none of the characters/people/places/events here are American at all). And as I said already but bears repeating: my god, don’t even THINK about making it GOT and marketing it as Gritty Dramatic Medieval History, You Know It’s Real Because They’re Dirty, Violent, and Bigoted!

Also, a couple tags I saw pop up were things like “Period-Typical Racism” and “Period-Typical Homophobia” and mmm okay obviously yes there are these elements, but what exactly is “period typical?” Does it mean “using these terms just because you figure everyone was less tolerant back then?” We know that I, with my endless pages of meta on medieval queer history, would definitely side-eye any attempts to paint these things as Worse Than Us, and the setting alone would convey a sense of the conflict without having to add on gratuitous microaggressions. I basically think the film needs to be made exactly like the original: centering the gay/queer perspectives of marginalized people and people of color, resisting the urge for crass jokes at the expense of the identity of its characters, and approaching it with an awareness of the deep complexity and personal meaning of these things to people in terms of the historical moment we’re in, while not making a film that ONLY prizes our response and our current crises. Because if we’re thinking about these historical genealogies, the least we can do (although we so often aren’t) is to be honest.

Title: Breaking the Ice Legion: A New Terror Story: In the latest updates from the charr civil war reports have been coming in that negotiations have come to an absolute standstill. There has been a breakdown of all negotiations after the reported capture of Steel Warband member and second in command to Centurion Steelcatcher, Cinder Steeltemper, who has not been seen since and according to intelligence is to be considered MIA. Imperator Bangar Ruinbringer has also not been seen in the recent weeks, unverified sources claim that the former Blood Legion Imperator was last seen forging farther north. Reports also state that a new enemy has been spotted recently, a before unseen form of icebrood. The Jormag corrupted icebrood who have been referring to themselves as the Ice Legion have been rising from the ranks of Dominion all under Ruinbringer’s command. The United Legions, after gaining control of the southern portion of Drizzlewood Coast, will be looking to push beyond Wolf’s Crossing Bridge up into what is being called the Frost Citadel the main stronghold of the Dominion and Ice Legion. While on the surface this appears to be an advantage to the United Legions this could pose greater risks than ever as the farther north the legions push the closer they get to the looming threat that is the elder dragon Jormag. No comment has been made from the Legion Imperators within the United Legions about the risks that this advancement into enemy territory may entail but with an elder dragon involved nothing is certain.

Title: Introducing skritt fashion reviews

Story: Skritt was told by boss editor lady to seek help from others in writing of fashion column. So Skritt has come to paper reading people to ask for you to send us photos of your shiny shiny outfits. The shinier the better! Skritt will then give a full review of the outfit, the shiny pieces of armor that nice photo people are wearing, and the dyes that they have used. Boss Courica has said that even if the dyes are shiny that we can’t drink them, which skritt thinks is unfair. Title: An Icy Olive Branch from the Icebrood?

Story: Reports have arrived from reporters Truthseeker and Teekay that a group of seemingly peaceful  icebrood were spotted in Hoelbrak within the Great Lodge yesterday. The group was surprisingly peaceful similar to their Svanir counterparts that live within Hoelbrak. The icebrood  crowd was peaceful and even willing to give quotes to reporters on the scene. Truthseeker was able to get a very short interview with Svana Dragonbane who when questioned about the dragons and their opinions on them said, “Once, I thought the dragons were a blight. But now I see that Jormag is here to protect us. Ice fortifies, ice protects.” The group departed shortly afterwards toward Frostgorge Sound where there have been common sightings of the Claw of Jormag.

Title: An unbiased travel review of Divinity’s Reach from a Charr

Story: Divinity’s Reach is easily the best city in all of Tyria! The city is easily the most gorgeous with the best infrastructure. The locals are the most elegant and beautiful of all the Tyrians.The city is huge with plenty of shopping opportunities. If you don’t want to spend money you can always craft it yourself at the Dwayna Low Road crafting stations. The most beautiful and just Queen Jennah also resides in the city. The Central Plaza is one of the most beautiful places in the city, just second to the Queen’s throne room. The city is also one of the safest, with Shining Blade members posted throughout. All in all, if you are thinking about visiting Divinity’s Reach I highly recommend it! Plenty of luxury to be had! Editor’s Note: Kittyblog was asked if this review was unbiased as she grew up in Divinity’s Reach, despite being a charr. Her statement was that this was her unbiased opinion but in the interest of fairness we would like to point out her very strong conflict of interest despite how confusing it may be for a travel reporter to have said biases.

Title: The Boasting Hall, Quail on Quail

Story: I know you’ve heard it before but Ascalonian Quail are the best birds in all of Tyria! They are the superior bird due to many things. The first being their beautiful head ornament! It is perfect! You wish you had such a beautiful headpiece! They also lay the cutest little eggs! They are perfect for an egg salad or scrambled eggs OR even hatching more quail! Obviously hatching them and making more is the superior choice of those but all are great! Some quail can even lay an egg a day! Imagine the quail army you could have in a short amount of time!  It’d be an army superior to any other animals in Tyria i’m sure!  Quail also travel in small flocks and when spooked they majestically burst forward with power and speed to take to the skies(for a moment.) You would be blessed to see such a beautiful display of feathers and power! The Quail’s call is also amazing! Just listen to the male as he calls to his flock! It’s glorious and powerful! Also have you ever seen a small baby quail? It’s amazing! So small and fluffy and perfect for cuddling and carrying with you anywhere you go! If you haven’t seen a baby quail I highly suggest you change that right this moment! Adopt your own Ascalonian Quail today! They are the superior bird of Tyria and deserve all the love and attention we can give them! Editor’s Note: This may hopefully be the last opinion article we do on the birds of Tyria. If anyone at all no matter what the subject is would like to also participate in some non bird related opinions that they would like to share we would absolutely love to hear them. But we also won’t say no to more bird related content if that’s what our readers would like to see. Just please, maybe just a little less bird content. 

Title: A true omnivore: I ate like the Commander for a day

Story: What’s the secret to finding the best food Tyria has to offer? According to the famous Pact Commander… try it all. Including, no offense to the honorable Commander, some items I would not strictly classify as edible. To be fair, I did ask for out of the way recommendations, and I certainly got them! Some stops on our tour were fairly respectable, the Meatoberfest in Diessa Plateau, for example, was utterly delightful, but things quickly went in a questionable direction. We tried some Orrian sea urchin, and I have to admit it was enjoyable, if a tad bit salty. Next was coffee with bloodstone, which packed a punch so powerful that I was afraid my soul may have left my body. I think my skeleton may still be suffering the aftershocks and I would recommend avoiding all foods laced with bloodstone dust. After that was enchanted clam bait, inedibly slimy and unappetizing seeing as I am not a clam. Then I was handed something that came from a can and claimed to be flank steak. It tasted more like the faint memory of meat bestowed upon insulation foam. I politely declined when the Commander suggested we consume a clay based Grawl paint to, “Imbue ourselves with its essence.” And suggested we try something more conventional. I was pleased that our next stop was Rata Sum… until I was offered a bag of cat food. With all due respect… I hope the Commander sticks to fighting the elder dragons.
