There were a lot of things about Jungkook that you didn’t learn until you were official. Like the fact he rarely matches his socks unless they’re cool socks. Or that he prefers his pancakes pre-drizzled with syrup. Not necessarily bad things, just aspects the general public wouldn’t normally see. In fact, the worst “trait” you’ve learned about Jungkook in the past year is how easily distracted he can get. Nothing crazy, just tiny actions, like forgetting to eat for three hours because he refuses to leave his Wii until he can beat the guys in three rounds of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in the Mushroom Kingdom stage. Strangely specific, but it’s Jungkook and you’ve long since learned he’s an enigma.
Times like now, when you creep up behind him as he continues screeching into his headset, voice cracking every now and then in that adorable way it does when he’s overwhelmed. You are no stranger to Jungkook’s apartment, having visited more times than you can count, and even dropping by and doing a little dusting while he was on tour. However, you’re surprised you can see the back of his coconut hair from the low backing of his new computer chair. He’d told you he recently threw away his big leather, super villain gaming chair because it’d started to tear, but it was a fact you hadn’t really paid much attention to.
Now, however, you’re feeling a little happy he did, because it means you can slide your palms around his shoulders in somewhat of a back hug. It’s way better than having to walk all the way in front of him, and you bite down on a grin when he mutters the softest “hi, baby.”
“Which stage are we battling on today?” You murmur, pinching the tip of his mic to twist it away. Faintly, you can hear Taehyung’s voice shout a greeting your way.
Another button smash of his remote, hands enveloping the tiny device. “Wii Fit Studio with Wario,” he replies, eyes flickering across the screen like his life depends on it. You snort.
“I thought you hated Wario,” you point out, and move with him when he jumps after being shot off the screen.
He looks at you for the first time as he waits for his character to respawn. “Changed my mind. He’s just misunderstood. Listen to my theory, babe,” he starts, and you let go of him because you have the back of a ninety year old war veteran and can only hunch over for so long. You take up a very bodyguard-esque position behind him, watching him play and gently pressing your thumbs into his shoulders. “Imagine this. You’re a kid trying to have fun and this other kid who looks exactly like you but better is somehow also cooler than you.”
You hum, letting go of his shoulders to toy with his hair. You pull it into a makeshift ponytail and giggle, not that Jungkook minds, too immersed in his game and his sudden loving Wario speech to care. “Then, you get older and this same dude is still getting all the credit for being exactly like you. On top of that, his little brother is doing the same to your little brother! I’d be so pissed.”
You let his hair drop, and then quickly brush the strands away from his face when he whines. “Uh huh. But theoretically speaking, aren’t you the Mario of your little universe?” Jungkook is silent. “If we’re going by your little story, I hardly doubt there’s another Jeon doing better than you,” you point out.
Jungkook’s Wario gets blown off the screen for the last time, and he’s left blankly staring at the screen. You poke his neck. “I don’t wish to discuss this further,” he says rather matter of factly. You laugh, shaking him and his seat. “Baby, why would you say that!” He cries.
You smile, flicking the switch on his headset before pushing it off his head. Jungkook moans again, head lolling back to glare up at you. “I finally come to terms with the fact that Mario is the true asshole, just to find out I’m Mario? Fucking absurd.”
You roll your eyes at his dramatics, fingers dancing down the stretched column of his neck. “Listen, no one told you to go out and create an entire deep backstory for the Mario Cinematic Universe.”
He scoffs, eyes fluttering shut as he continues basking in your soft caresses. “The MCU,” he chuckles under his breath. On screen, Taehyung is still fighting with whoever else they were playing with tonight, a little Isabelle and Dark Samus dancing across the screen.
Meanwhile, you’re still absentmindedly running your fingertips along Jungkook’s skin. For a second, you think he’s asleep by the deepening of his breaths, his body so soft and relaxed beneath your touch, but then he gets one of those weird twitches of his, and pushes his head between your breasts.
“Ah,” he sighs, eyes still shut. “Soft.”
“No shit,” you say, “you’re deep between my boobs.”
The little shit snuggles closer at your words. “My favorite place in the world,” he croons, and you pinch his neck for his stupidity. “Tell me when they’re done,” he mumbles, sounding as if he’s actually gonna fall asleep.
You relent, continuing your gentle massaging of the muscles in his neck as you tune into the match on screen. You’re not exactly sure which one Taehyung is, but your gut tells you he’s probably playing as Isabelle, so you root for her. You’re weirdly into it, jumping every time a good spar happens.
By the time the match ends (literally only like 4 minutes later) and you check on your boyfriend, he’s snuggled his way between the valley of your breasts, his cute nose poking out from between. “Oh my god,” you sigh, having to take a momentary pause to collect yourself from the sight.
Jungkook giggles.
“Well. Taehyung’s done,” you inform him, and he hums though he doesn’t really seem to care about Smash anymore. His hands go slack around his remote, crawling up to dwarf yours.
He sighs, sounding so happy with himself. “Baby, you’re so soft,” he hums, and you try desperately, and you mean desperately, to ignore the sudden drop of his voice, his hands ever so gently tangling with yours.
You try to hit him with the facts, because you know where this will go if you don’t. “Well, breasts are made up of mostly fatty tissue, and lobes for producing milk,” you inform him.
Contrary to your goal, the handsome smile that envelopes his face has you fighting down the curl in your stomach. You can never win.
“You know I love when you talk anatomical to me,” he purrs, and it takes everything in you to not punch him straight in those pearly whites.
You don’t have enough time to respond, too caught up in a mental pep talk to re-evaluate what your body considered attractive. Jungkook’s corny jokes should definitely not be high on the list, but your rock hard nipples said otherwise. “So, you gonna let me suck on them or what?”
“I hate you,” you groan, reaching over to completely unplug Jungkook’s headset because you were absolutely terrified of creating an accidental porno with your celebrity boyfriend.
Jungkook chuckles. “No you don’t,” he teased, finally wiggling his way away from you to whirl his seat around. “Could feel your nip nops pressing into my forehead. No bra today? She’s bold.”
“She’s bold and embarrassed that her boyfriend calls them nip nops,” you sigh, climbing into his lap. His remote presses hard against your thigh, and you yelp before he tugs it out and throws it on the desk behind him. Vaguely, you register the screen lighting up behind Jungkook, but then he’s nudging your shirt upwards.
He’s barely brushed his hands against you, but you’re already shivering and squirming in his lap. “Relax for me, baby,” he assures you, a new depth slowly creeping around his words. “Gonna take care of you, alright?”
You nod, breath already caught in your throat just from the way he looks at you. He flashes you another smile, bunny teeth slightly pressed against his lower lip, before he’s pushing your shirt above your chest, and marveling at your boobs.
You don’t miss the way his gaze becomes glossy, eyes hyper focused on the rise and fall of your chest. Just as you’re about to urge him to do something, he’s reaching up to brush his thumb around your nipple. “Oh,” you blurt out, the skin around your nipple rising with goosebumps.
Jungkook lets out a soft huff of air at your reaction. “So sensitive. Bet I could make you come just by touching your tits, baby.”
You scoff, choking back another sound when he does the same to the other nipple. “I wanna say I doubt it, but I feel like you’ll prove me wrong,” you retort.
At this, Jungkook smirks. “Oh, so now it’s an expectation?” He smiles, and it’s the last angelic side of him you see before he’s ducking down and latching his supple lips around your breast.
Immediately, your back arches forward, hands scrambling to grip onto his shoulders as he licks across your breast. “J-Jeon, wait—“ you cry, body shaking at the way his tongue dances around your nipple.
Your hands tangle themselves in his hair, tugging and twisting it as he flicks his tongue back and forth, knocking it against the hard pebble. You moan, and almost choke when he pulls away with a lewd pop.
His lips are glossy from his own saliva, red from the friction. He’s looking at your glistening breast like a starved man, thumb returning to glide over his own messy artwork. “So pretty,” he hums, Puckering his lips to blow a soft tuft of air against it. You shiver. “Aren’t you the softest little thing,” he says, one hand falling to your waist and gently easing you closer to his crotch. His sweatpants do nothing to conceal how he’s feeling.
You hate to admit how your insides had turned into a Fruit Gusher the second he started sucking on your boob, and now that you think of, you'd be absolutely embarrassed if you did come from just this.
As if sensing your inner turmoil, Jungkook meets your gaze. “I fucking knew it,” he says, slightly out of breath. You furrow your eyebrows, to which he pointedly raises his and gestures to his crotch. “You started pressing down so hard on me the second I got my mouth on you,” he brags, and as if to punctuate his statement, grinds his hips upward into you. “Did sucking your titty make you that wet, doll?”
Your cheeks flush at his words. Belatedly, you nod, your eyes falling to his lips that quirk up into a smile. “Oh, you’re just so desperate to be touched, aren’t you?” He continues, and then reaches up to pinch your nipple between two rough fingers.
You gasp, body arching into him. The pain is new, but definitely welcomed. “Yes,” you cry out, hand reaching out to grapple around his wrist. Though you try to tug it away, it feels disgustingly good and you know he knows, which is why he gives it a slight tug.
Finally, when he lets go of you, he doesn’t hesitate to lower himself down by your other, ignored breast. “I wanna see you cream your shorts, okay? So I’m gonna suck your other titty until you’re near tears, baby,” he states, before giving you a soft push of his hips.
“Please, be gentle,” you choke out, words stuck the moment he wraps his lips around you. This time, he’s ruthless with his tongue. He traces it all over, tonguing your nipple like a lollipop. It feels nice, the wet caress, that you don’t see that bite coming at all. You moan, body unconsciously pushing away from him in surprise.
“Nuh uh,” Jungkook tuts, strong arms wrapping around your lower back to bring you back into his embraces. This closer position has your core pressing down directly over his dick, and the sudden double stimulation has your vision momentarily going white. “Gonna give you a pretty little bite right under your tit, doll,” he announces, and in a scary act of trust, presses his fingers into your spine until you’re staring at the ceiling, the only thing supporting you his strong arms. He nudged your breast with his nose until he finds the perfect spot to place his impromptu hickey.
It’s right against the bottom curve, where your skin folds over, that he settles on. “Need you to to sit nice and still for me. You can do that, right baby?” Jungkook says, big doe eyes looking up at you. You nod your head quickly.
His teeth are cold, unlike the rest of his mouth. “Jungkook!” You moan, toes curling and thighs attempting to clamp shit. They hit the outside of the chair instead, slightly squeezing around his thin waist. “You’re s-so good to me,” you wail, pushing down into his covered cock for friction.
As much as you wanted to act like this wouldn’t affect you, your body is no liar. Fingers tangled in his long curls, you find yourself gently rutting against him. Much to your surprise, this makes him break away, a thin bridge of saliva connecting his mouth to your chest. You mourn when it finally breaks.
“Told you to stay still, doll,” Jungkook warns, one set of long fingers sprawling on the small of your back as the other reaches up. “You had all the time in the world to work yourself on me, but you wanna choose now?” He gently reprimands you, twisting your nipple between two pinched fingers. You mewl. “Promise you’ll be good?”
“I can’t,” you whine, desperation seeping into your voice as your traitorous hips jolt forward again. You nearly fall onto him when a particular nudge of his cock over your core feels just right. “Want your cock so bad,” you wail, throwing all hesitation out the window as you begin full on humping yourself against his crotch.
Jungkook sighs, trying to act annoyed with you but the twitch of his cock beneath you cannot lie. “Well I’m not done having fun with you,” he says, though the way his words are tinged with complaints, you can tell he’s trying hard not to pout. Nonetheless, he latches his mouth around your breast again, and you nearly faint when he rolls your nipple between his teeth.
“Jeon,” you cry, looking down with probably the world’s worst quadruple chin only to catch him absolutely savoring your titty. He’s got his eyes closed, pink tongue licking across every inch he can get. His arms are wrapped around the smallest part of your waist like he can’t possibly fathom letting you go. When he moans, a whole new found wetness coats your walls. You choke on a sob, “I-I love you, Jungkook.”
You can feel a smirk pressed around your breast. It’s this moment when Jungkook finally gives up on his little quest to tame you, hips bucking up to meet your offbeat grinds against him. He pulls off your breast with another wet pop, though he’s slightly lower than you from how consumed he was when sucking you tits. He has to make a little effort to stretch his neck up to look at you, and even then it’s over the top of his nose that he gazes at you.
His lips pucker slightly, and the next time you grind down onto him has them brushing against your lower lip. “That’s it,” he croons, admiring the different expressions that contort your face as you become closer and closer to your orgasm. “Come all over your pretty panties for me, baby,” he encourages, sucking your lower lip between his.
His mouth had been so dangerous to you today, licking and sucking in all the right spots, but nothing has ever felt as right as having it on yours. “I-I’m sorry,” you whimper, fingers knitting themselves in his hair.
“Don’t be,” he comforts, gripping your hips and swiveling you in a circular motion. “Next time you’ll do better, won’t you?”
You nod, head bouncing like a bobble head. He smiles, pressing a soft kiss to the corner of your mouth. Your thighs twitch. “I was gone for so long,” he rambles, hips picking up their pace the second he hears your breath hitch in your throat. “Didn’t think you’d become so sensitive and needy.”
A faint smile passes through your lips, and your toes curl and your belly tightens in that delicious way it does right before orgasm. Another grind against Jungkook, and he sighs “I love you,” as you cream your pants like a dweeby high schooler being touched for the first time.
Jungkook’s gentle movements halt the moment he sees that orgasmic face overtake you, pressing soft smooches all over the bottom half of your face, peppering your lips with them, until your fingers finally loosen in his hair.
“Fuck, I’m embarrassed,” you huff out, feeling gross and sticky in all the worst spots. Jungkook chuckles, and you can still feel his hard cock nudging the insides of your thighs.
“Nah,” he says. “It’ll make it easier for me to slide in.”
Even in your post orgasmic state, his words have a brand new coil of heat revving up. God, you were whipped for him. “Bed?” You ask, and he nods as you clamber off his lap, tugging down your shirt.
Immediately, he whirls around and catches sight of his abandon Smash game. “Huh.” He says, and you already feel the distraction staple itself into his mind. “Have you ever noticed how Dark Pit—“
You cut him off, gliding your hands around his neck and slowly craning it back until you can give him a tiny Spider-Man kiss. “If you make me cum a second time I promise I’ll listen to whatever theory you have about him,” you purr, punctuating your words with a tiny smooch.
The screen is off in record time.

haikyuu headcanons #4
today's menu:
a shot of bokuto kotaro, drip of sugawara koushi and a glass nishinoya yuu
scenario:
losing their child in the supermarket
author's note:
i had a lot of fun writing this~
bokuto kotaro
Tumblr media
honestly speaking, are we even surprised that he forgot about his kid?
if you are then hi there, you must be new to the haikyuu fandom
leaving bokuto and his kid alone in the supermarket was one of the worst things you could ever do
but you had no choice; or rather, they had no choice
bokuto wanted to go to the supermarket to get some ingredients for the surprise anniversary dinner for the two of you and he didn't want to leave your two year old kid alone at home
you just so happened out with friends during the day and could not take care of her (it's gonna be a girl that's going to be spoiled rotten by bokuto)
so the two of them went, using the public bus and he almost lost her, since he almost forgot to pick her up when they left the bus stop at their stop
it was only until an elderly woman asked him if that was his child, and only then did he realise that he actually had a daughter and was there with her
oh my god bokuto i swear-
he felt so guilty when he saw his daughter on the bus seat, with her brown eyes that she got from kotaro staring at him, with a hint of confusion in her eyes
"babyy i'm so sorry for leaving youu! daddy will never ever forget about you again okay?" he'll tell her, pouting
and literally fifteen minutes later he lost her again
he was so excited and was so absorbed in looking at the cuts of meat that he, once again, completely forgot about the existence of his daughter
spent a good amount of time choosing between sirloin and ribeye and kept asking the staff what the difference was when he was interrupted by the intercom in the supermarket
"attention please, we have a lost child at cashier number one, i repeat, cashier number one. she's wearing a pink dress with a ribbon on the top left, and has both...black and white hair?"
bokuto heard it, but decided that it had nothing to do with him and ignored it
"she appears to have...brown eyes *distant crying sounds* and oh my- please don't pull at my hair! *static noises*"
"pfft, what a feisty kiddo." bokuto mutters to himself, while listening intently to the butcher, eyes fixated of both cuts of meat
"*weird muffled sounds* waa! daddy!! *thumping sounds on mic*"
when he heard the kid's voice, bokuto jumped and hastily looked behind him
his daughter was gone
looks at the butcher, a horrified expression on his face
"i-is that my daughter..?"
to which the butcher is confused and replies with "i...don't know sir. is she?"
"shit."
and he drops everything and leaves for cashier number one while almost tripping over himself smh bokuto are you the baby or is your daughter the baby
sugawara koushi
Tumblr media
let's be real, he'll never lose his kid at the supermarket
he's way to father material to even do that
but because he's father material, he will lose his children at the supermarket because he has... too many kids
alright let's say you popped out five kids within the span of three years; one oldest boy, one pair of twins, both girls and another pair of twins, one boy one girl
you and him hadn't actually planned to produce that many offspring in that short period of time but you two were in a blissful family and wouldn't trade it for the world
okay so, the oldest was six, first pair of twins were five and the second pair were four; basically a nightmare to take care of in the mornings
but somehow, he does it? cause he's THAT sugawara koushi if you get the reference you're a real one
okay so, you were trying to make dinner, when you realise that you ran out of ingredients to feed your big family and asked sugawara to help you get them at the supermarket
at first, it started with the oldest boy wanting to follow him, to which he said yes to
but soon, every single one of the children wanted to tag along with him
he found it too difficult to say no since he didn't want to see any creases on their faces so he reluctantly agreed
you knew how fatherly he was anyways so you didn't object and sent him off at the door
it was quite the journey though, the both pair of twins kept chasing each other in the streets and almost gave sugawara a heart attack when they ran out to the roads
luckily, there were no cars around
he really let his emotions get to him and lectured the four young ones in a harsh tone on how important road safety was and how they only had one life and they should be careful
if it were you lecturing them, the kids literally would not care
but since it was their precious father doing so, they decided to be obedient and walked like a normal human being while the oldest one is just there oops
honestly, sugawara would have had it handled before they reached the supermarket so it would be all good in the end :)
nishinoya yuu
Tumblr media
he was out with his son to the supermarket because he was asking for some power rangers special chocolate bar that all his friends in kindergarten had so he wanted one too
noya, who loves his son to bits, agreed to buying him a couple bars to bring to school throughout the next few weeks and thus goes to the supermarket with him alone
you wanted to come, however, you were suddenly down with a cold and couldn't join the both of them
when he reached the supermarket, his son immediately goes in a frenzy at the thought if the chocolate bars and runs away
and soon enough, could no longer be seen
he panics
he starts to panic because he's afraid of what would happen if he doesn't find him (i feel like his kid would be a boy that will be a splitting image of him) and would be really scared of your reaction towards it
so when that happens, the first thing that comes to his mind is to panic-call you
he really didn't want to disturb you when you were sick but to him, that was the best option available
"u-uh, y/n? i lost our baby."
"what? *cough* oh my, yuu, maybe going to the cashier would help? they can make an announcement after all."
you knew better than to lash out on him so you decided that giving him advice on how to tackle the situation would be better
"thank you so much, i love you. sorry for calling you while you're sick!"
he ends the call and scurries along to the cashier where the announcement machine thing was
"h-hi there. i-i'm..."
before he could finish his sentence, the lady working at the cashier asked him
"hi there, little one. are you looking for your parents?"
nishinoya: 0-0
he was about to get annoyed when he reminded himself what he was there for and shook his head briefly
"no, i'm not. i'm actually looking for my child? he's a boy, around six years old, wait no he's six years old this year. has black hair and brown eyes, is wearing a tayo the little bus shirt with snoopy pants. could you make an announcement for him? thank you."
the lady was shocked, needless to say
"ah...right. i'm sorry! i thought you were-"
"it's fine, just please hurry page for my kid thanks"
so after she paged for him, he was waiting there, pacing back and forth, worried sick as he shoots longing looks towards the shelves, hoping that some kind soul would bring his son back to him
with you still in his mind, he'll send you a quick text on how he already paged for y'all's son and was now waiting for his return
soon enough, he heard someone scream 'daddy!' really loudly while making a beeline for him
he felt as if a huge weight had been lifted off his shoulders and sighed with relief when he saw the familar silhouette of his son
he'll bow and thank the cashier before running to the kid
"where did you run off to? i was so worried!"
"to the choco bar area daddy! that's why we came here right?"
nishinoya has never felt more dumb in his entire life

Once Upon A Time There Was A Girl Who Really Loves Knitting And Dogs It Was Me The End Heart T Shirt
Yesterday was a Once Upon A Time There Was A Girl Who Really Loves Knitting And Dogs It Was Me The End Heart T Shirt busy day of meetings and airplane travel for peter and connor but last night peter took some time to share his thoughts on the passing of the great christopher lee christopher lee was the tallest actor I ever knew he was also by far the most literate when we first met in a los angeles studio where he was recording his lines as king haggard in the last unicorn he had just recorded haggard’s speech about his first sight of unicorns and I mentioned that it was probably my favorite speech in the book he immediately wanted to know well did I do it properly we can always redo it right here of course he’d handled the lines perfectly but writers and writers’ opinions about their work mattered intensely to christopher that same afternoon we discovered that between the two of us we we could call to mind just about all the lines of g k chesterton’s poem the rolling english road we also discovered a mutual need to hit the men’s room and my son dan in his mid teens at the time still has a very clear memory of christopher simultaneously peeing while declaiming in that voice which no one could ever keep from imitating after fifteen minutes with him before the roman came to rye or out to severn strode the rolling english drunkard made the rolling english road a reeling road a rolling road that rambled round the shire and after him the parson ran the sexton and the squire I leave it to the reader to imagine that voice in the tiled acoustics of a hollywood bathroom we met a second time in munich where the last unicorn was being dubbed into german most of my memories of that time and of chris lee have to do with books and authors he had known both j r r tolkien and a writer who mattered more to me t h white we had a long ongoing argument in munich about a chapter of the sword in the stone that appears in the english edition of the book but not in the american one he turned out to be right he usually was he never failed to mention the last unicorn as one of his very favorite books and as one of the movies he was most proud of having made indeed he left my whopperjawed as mark twain would have put it when we were being interviewed together on austrian television and he announced oh yes I simply couldn’t resist a chance to play king haggard one more time even in another language after all and he looked straight into the camera it’s the closest they’ll ever let me get to playing king lear the camera swung toward me to catch my stunned reaction and chris looked across the studio at me and winked but my most vivid memory chilling as it remains to this day has to do with the day that I and michael chase walker associate producer of the last unicorn and the one who really got the film made in the first place somehow found our way out to dachau I can’t now recall how we managed it considering that neither one of us spoke german and that you had to take both a subway and a bus to get there from the hotel where the crew were staying but we got there somehow and spent a good half of the day roaming with other tourists around a legendary concentration camp peering blindly into the huge crematoriums but staring with equal horror and fascination at the endless rows of filing cabinets containing every record of every human being who was ever imprisoned starved gassed or simply worked to death in this place michael and I grew quieter and quieter that afternoon until by the time we started back to munich we weren’t speaking at all I think we both felt that we might say anything in words again the first person we met in the hotel lobby was christopher he took one look at us and announced you’ve been to dachau we nodded without answering chris strode toward us looked all the way down from his six foot five inch altitude lowered his voice and inquired still smells doesn’t it with the end of world war ii christopher as a member of the special forces and whose five or six languages included fluent german had been assigned to hunt down and interrogate nazi war crminals and had been present at the liberation of dachau and yes the smell of death had undoubtedly faded somewhat since 1945 but it was still as real as michael and me wandering dazedly between the ovens and the filing system we just didn’t know what it was but christopher did and i’d know it again I never saw him again after munich though we spoke on the telephone a few times on the last occasion when I had called to wish him a happy 90th birthday I remember him assuring me that if by the time you come to make your live action version of your movie I have passed on do not let it concern you I have risen from the dead several times I know how it’s done he worked almost to the last as the real artists of every kind do they work to be working because that’s what they do and they die when they stop I always regarded him as the last of the great 19th century actors that bravura larger than life style went with him no modern rada trained performer would ever attempt it today nor should they it would inevitably come out parody however earnestly meant yet there was always more to christopher lee as an actor than dracula or the mummy or saruman or sherlock holmes for that matter though he was very proud of having played not only both holmes and watson but sherlock’s brother mycroft as well lord summerisle of the original the wicker man probably his favorite of his own movies is most likely closer to chris’s dark benignity than any other role he ever inhabited I believe this because lord summerisle sings a surprising amount in that movie and chris passionately loved singing if there is any such thing as an afterlife or reincarnation I truly hope no believe that christopher lee will return as a wagnerian opera singer if he hadn’t been considered too old in his 30s to be accepted for formal vocal training he might have been in his own eyes at least a happier more fulfilled man but we would have been deeply poorer for it and never have known. Wild horses have lived in the kisatchie national forest and fort polk for over 150 years now however despite public outcry and ongoing litigation the u s army is removing horses from fort polk with many of them ending up in a kill pen you can help save these historic horses by signing a petition below and by making a donation to our friends at the pegasus equine guardian association to fund its rescue fostering adoption efforts at. She needs the best emcee baby do you want me please say yes you do come tidy up my crib I can tell you wanna peace to jane fonda let’s play like honda trucks peace to you for makin big bucks time is upon us you’re the star I like it you rule my world like the vikings u were at the corner store paparottzi made a sighting finer than pizza and cool like lightening so stop hiding come inside baby im wating for you your so true wrote that in 4 mins what you think bro

The 30 Best R&B Albums of 2019 - Rated R&B
Tumblr media
If 2018 was the year of endless R&B releases, 2019 was definitely the year of anticipation for more intriguing R&B LPs to drop.
In the first half of 2019, diverse artists like Chaka Khan, Khalid, Ciara, and Eric Bellinger, grabbed the limelight for their solid projects.
Later in the year, there was a mighty rise in the genre, as even greater albums started to show up on retail and digital fronts.
Among this elite list of artists to flex their R&B muscles were BJ The Chicago Kid, Elle Varner, Raphael Saadiq and Fantasia.
Here are the top 30 R&B albums of 2019, as chosen by our editorial team: Anders, Antwane, Danielle and Keithan.
30. Leven Kali: Low Tide
Where the mellow and hazy “vibes” take president, Leven Kali breathes an energetic spirit into the current music climate. Low Tide is a satisfying offering of musicianship in a little over 30 minutes. Kali displays his musical range from the smooth jazz-inspired “Cassandra” to the warm and funky “Do U Wrong” featuring Syd, while the overlooked gem “1 on 1” pays homage to the art of the ’90s slow jam. For his full-length debut, Kali pieces elements of R&B and some of its subgenres to create a refreshingly bright project. — Danielle
29. Nicole Bus: Kairos
Hailing from the Netherlands, all ears were on Nicole Bus’ Wu-Tang-sampled single “You” before fans knew who she was. Kairos is an assortment of genres spread over R&B and soul with contagious boom-bap drums as the centerpiece. Her smoldering tone adds texture to gleaming tracks like “Rain,” a simple yet hard-hitting number that allows her vocals to cut through. With a radio single under her belt and releasing her first American LP not long after, the timing couldn’t have been any better. — Danielle
28. Shay Lia: Dangerous (Deluxe)
If you’re a fan of KAYTRANADA, then you should be familiar with Shay Lia. Both from Montreal, the pair have collaborated in the past but Lia steps out on her own for her first full-length project Dangerous. The project connects all 11 tracks with a consistent bounce for this airy, ’70s-inspired compilation. Dangerous picks up the energy by track five, “Want You” featuring UK rapper Kojey Radical, a percussion laden song where the two effortlessly feed off each other. Lia closes things out with the smooth retro-leaning “Rock Baby,” allowing her vocals and the stripped-down production to come to the forefront. — Danielle
27. Raheem DeVaughn: The Love Reunion
Anyone familiar with Raheem DeVaughn knows that he has crowned himself as The Love King over the years. The Washington, D.C. native has dedicated his entire discography, which spans over 14 years, to all-things love. On The Love Reunion, DeVaughn brings his signature sound to the forefront on passionate tunes like “Just Right,” “Any Everywhere,” “Ballerina” and the title track, to name a few. There are a couple of moments when DeVaughn taps into other genres. “Kissed By the Sun” hears DeVaughn experimenting with Afrobeat, while the Edley Shine-assisted “Magnet” brings reggae vibes. — Keithan
26. Lion Babe: Cosmic Wind
Cosmic Wind is the appropriate title for Lion Babe’s sophomore LP, a breezy and fluid collection of heavenly jams. Vocalist Jillian Hervey and producer Lucas Goodman combine their talents to create an infectious harmony of electro-soul and dance. Known for producing vibrant energy, the duo’s ability to oscillate between the slinky and rhythmic “Anyway You Want To” to the sexy and jazzy “Never Before” is a testament to their varying, yet solid influences. — Danielle
25. Kyle Dion: Suga
As his alter-ego SUGA, fledgling soulster Kyle Dion takes listeners down a famed-dazed path that involves sultry funk and futuristic soul melodies on his first proper album. Tackling the fast-track rise to stardom, Dion reflects on losing normality and strifes over maintaining a glamorous image in a “Glass House” where everyone is constantly on a stakeout. There are some moments on this groovy burner when Dion recalls Bruno Mars’ and The Weekend’s thunder like on the trend-borrowing “Spend It” and the colorfully warm “Teach Me.” But his own sound highlights creep out on “Not All Your Way,” a mellow speed bump targeted at a revved up partner who he wants to take his time loving. Dion laces “Somethings We Can’t Do,” a breathtaking closer based on personal contentment, with his best wails on this 40-minute set.  – Antwane
24. Summer Walker: Over It
While everyone was enjoying their hot girl summer, Summer Walker was gearing up to put the world back in its feels in the fall. The Atlanta-based singer-songwriter had already set off a chain reaction of women being open and honest about their sexuality on her hit song “Girls Need Love.” Now, she was ready to open up to the world in a whole new way on her debut album Over It. Walker’s effort showed the world a more vulnerable side to her, as she added on to a catalog of great melancholic R&B. The London on da Track-helmed project not only received a co-sign from Usher on “Come Thru,” but it debuted at No. 2 the Billboard 200 chart, becoming the highest female R&B debut in nearly 10 years.  — Anders
23. Tinashe: Songs For You
Tinashe has been fighting to get her sound heard for nearly half a decade. After leaving RCA Records due to “lack of creative control” earlier this year, the R&B virtuoso finished the most defining year for herself with the release of her super-personal independent album Songs For You. Tinashe’s fourth LP details the highs and lows of the singer’s past relationships on songs like “Save Room For Us” and “So Much Better.” It also reminds listeners of the California native’s incredible talent as a songwriter and record producer, as she wrote and produced nearly every track on this genre-bending set.  – Anders
22. Chris Brown: Indigo
How much music does Chris Brown have stored? Seriously. Just two years after dropping his 57-track album Heartbreak on a Full Moon, Brown returned with another extensive project, Indigo, which is packed with 32 tracks. While the album’s singles (“No Guidance” featuring Drake, “Heat” featuring Gunna” and “Undecided”) got a lot of love on the Billboard charts, there are plenty of gems that may go unnoticed if the listener isn’t willing to sit through two hours of music. There is something for every mood on the album: sensual (“Come Together” featuring H.E.R. and “Throw It Back”); dance/party (“Wobble Up” featuring Nicki Minaj and G-Eazy and You Like That”); laid-back/chill (“Don’t Check On Me” featuring Justin Bieber and Ink, “Dear God”); and much more. — Keithan
21. Fantasia: Sketchbook
Nobody knew what to expect from Fantasia’s follow-up to her so-called “garbage” The Definition Of… album in regards to her contrasting pre-album cuts (“PTSD” featuring T-Pain, “Holy Ghost”). But, as one might expect, Sketchbook further adds to her last two experimental album run. Vocally, Tasia is concerned about having more control than oversinging as highlighted on the adult-oriented love ballad “Enough” and the dramatized number “Bad Girl.” Musically, the soul performer continues to explore sonic freedom that gravitates towards her iconic rock influences (“Warning”). While this solid long-player doesn’t include her prematurely-discussed and uncleared collaboration with Brandy and Jazmine Sullivan, Fantasia refuses to stunt her desired artistic growth for fans or critics. – Antwane
20. PJ Morton: Paul
Paul takes listeners on a journey through PJ Morton’s mind as he ponders about his ambitions, his love life and his experience as a Black man in America. It is a solid album that is packed with positive affirmations to comfort anyone who is going through a tough time. If there’s anything to learn from this short-and-sweet project, it’s to never lose sight of who you are and to remain optimistic, period. – Keithan
19. DAWN: New Breed
DAWN is exactly what music needs: a passionate trailblazer who unabashedly resists industry tyranny for the sake of authentically connecting with their listeners. Celebrating her New Orleans origin, New Breed rids the toxic “this is a man’s world” view and hits on all the times women of color, particularly Black women, had to pander men in personal and professional situations. With a strong focus on vivid expressions regarding disappointment, perseverance, and self-acceptance, DAWN ignites a new fire in Black women on empowerment anthems like “Spaces” and “We, Diamonds.” Everything on this amped-up set isn’t so serious, though. The indie superstar samples nightlife on the easy groove “Dreams and Converse” and trolls an Instagram groupie on “Jealousy,” a fluid slow jam. – Antwane
18. Johnny Gill: Game Changer II
When you’re a legend like Johnny Gill, you can play by your own rules. After promoting his Game Changer album for three years — five singles in total — Gill kept the theme going with a sequel. This time around, he switches up his creative approach by gently tapping into other sounds outside of R&B. To help his vision come to light, he teamed with super producers like Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Blac Elvis and Ralph Stacy. Gill doesn’t stray too far from traditional R&B sounds. He quickly delves back into his comfort zone with tender R&B tunes like the album’s lead single “Soul of a Woman,” “Perfect” featuring Ralph Tresvant, “Bed on Fire,” “Home” featuring Kevon Edmonds and more. – Keithan
17. Louis York: American Griots
Mary J. Blige, Rihanna, Bruno Mars and Britney Spears all have something in common: they’ve worked with Louis York — Claude Kelly and Chuck Harmony — to create hits that their fans will continue to play from years out. This year was the year for Louis York. Their debut album American Griots exemplifies Black Excellence. The carefully-curated sonic experience is a celebration of Black people’s influence on music. Although R&B is the essence of Louis York’s music, they consciously decided to incorporate sounds from other genres that Black people had an impact on. American Griots is an ode to Black musicians and artists who pioneered what we refer to today as American music. Although the album contains a mix of different genres, it flows in a way that makes the listening experience seamless. — Keithan
16. Johntá Austin: Love, Sex & Religion
Johnta Austin’s musical resume is full of hits he’s written for artists like Usher, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, and the list goes on. This year, it was all about Johnta Austin the artist. On his debut effort, the Grammy-winning singer/songwriter dabbles into love, sex and religion. There is more emphasis on love and sex, with religious nuances sprinkled in between. “Everyone has their own feeling of love, their own connection to the creator and their own connection to sex,” Austin told Rated R&B in an interview. “As long as it is pure, beautiful and you’re not hurting anybody, then this album is for you.” — Keithan
15. Rahsaan Patterson: Heroes & Gods
After an eight-year hiatus, Rahsaan Patterson made a divine return with Heroes & Gods — and it was well worth the wait. On Heroes & Gods, Patterson explores themes on love, self-empowerment and spirituality. The 13-track offering fuses experimental sounds that effectively showcase Patterson’s well-textured tone and pristine vocal range. Patterson’s signature sound can be heard on songs like “Catch Me When I Fall” and “Sent From Heaven.” He gives listeners a chance to let loose on the dance floor with upbeat songs like “Rock and Roll,” “Soldier” and “Silly, Love, Fool.” Listening to Heroes & Gods is just another reminder that Patterson is criminally-underrated as a vocalist and as an artist. — Keithan
14. Mahalia: Love and Compromise
Mahalia, another promising newcomer from the U.K., makes the best use of her past love situations on her sterling debut set. Having a songwriting credit on each song featured on Love and Compromise, this rising talent has grown into a woman that demonstrates unique power after overcoming interesting romantic experiences far beyond her youth. Original and reminiscent at the same time, this emotionally vulnerable album plays in the street of vibrant twists and turns on tuneful tracks like the pressure-free joint “Good Company” and the in the grey feeler “What Am I?” Her irresistible collaborations with other new acts Ella Mai and Lucky Daye are genuine co-signs. In all, Love and Compromise is a strong indication that R&B’s future is in good hands. – Antwane
13. Elle Varner: Ellevation (EP)
It’s not easy to make a comeback after seven years, but Elle Varner returned like she never left. Although her Ellevation project is labeled as an EP, it feels like an album. Running six minutes shorter than her debut album Perfectly Imperfect, Ellevation is packed with all kinds of feels. In a span of 35 minutes, Varner takes her listeners on an emotional journey as she navigates through her broken heart. The project opens with “Coffee On the Roof” where she catches feelings with a potential love interest. However, things quickly take a turn on the second track “Pour Me (Think bout u)” featuring Wale. She tries to save her relationship on “1 To 10” but is ultimately unsuccessful. While the core of the project is sadness, Varner picks her head up on “Kinda Love” and outlines what she wants in her next relationship. – Keithan
12. Baby Rose: To Myself
A cure for healing a broken heart: any tear-soaked track from Baby Rose’s critically- lauded debut outing, To Myself. Possessing vocal dynamics and nuances of music great Nina Simone, Rose proves that her seasoned sound is as trusting as the touchy lyrical substance she yearns. She factors in a painful narrative of mistaken domesticity on the exhausted opener “Sold Out.” Cuts like the one-sided love affair “Over” and the indecisive highlight “Borderline” are dominated by deep sadness and nocturnally complex arrangements to drive it all home with intense emotional prowess. To Myself should be the album to make it not only to unfledged listeners but those with mature minds, too. – Antwane
11. Gallant: Sweet Insomnia
“I called the album Sweet Insomnia because, lyrically, every song is bittersweet,” Gallant said in a previous press statement. “Nothing is 100% positive and light-hearted. Nothing is 100% brooding and cynical. It’s very balanced and real – like an unretouched photo.” For Sweet Insomnia, the follow-up to his Grammy-nominated debut album Ology, he opted to experiment more with an early 2000s R&B sound. The standout track “Sleep On It,” and arguably one of the best R&B songs to release this year, brings back those contemporary R&B vibes felt on Usher’s 8701 album. The Maryland native doesn’t hold back on his ear-piercing falsetto notes. His vocals soar on songs like “Hurt” and “Crimes. While the subject matter on Sweet Insomnia may be a little dark and emotional, the overall nostalgia brings light to the listening experience for true R&B lovers. — Keithan
10. SiR: Chasing Summer
Switching seasons from November, SiR takes flight into sunny yet turbulent skies on Chasing Summer. Inglewood’s finest takes listeners through the less savory aspects of romance from a true to life perspective. SiR pulls from his earlier works and ties it in with his current sound to form an album that pleases new and old fans alike. Steadily in the mid-tempo pocket, the TDE singer flows with ease on songs like ‘Wires in the Way” and “You Can’t Save Me.” The listening experience of the hazy and melodic body of work feels akin to the favorable season coming to an end, savoring every last moment until it comes to a close. — Danielle
9. Raphael Saadiq: Jimmy Lee
The fifth studio album from Raphael Saadiq may well be one of the year’s most dramatic R&B releases. Most everything on Jimmy Lee, the well-respected musician’s first full-length effort in eight years, tends to be a tribute to his deceased brother’s battle with addiction. Lead single, “Something Keeps Calling,” is a soul-inflected comeback hit that describes his constant fight against a sea of nagging second thoughts. There are only a few songs that don’t address substance abuse in any capacity. While he makes heady drug references on “I’m Feeling Love,” focused on dependency, it’s disguised as a love ode. Sticking to his eccentric, jazz-funk sound, Saadiq mixes in dark nuances and heavy lyrics on Jimmy Lee to showcase boundary-pushing moments. – Antwane
8. BJ The Chicago Kid: 1123
The title of BJ The Chicago Kid’s second album (1123) may appear random to many people but there’s a bigger meaning behind it: It was inspired by his birthday, which is November 23. To celebrate another year of life, BJ gave the world the gift of music. “Most people receive gifts for their birthday but I wanted to give something for my birthday,” he told Rated R&B earlier this year. The something BJ is referring to is an unforgettable experience that comes from listening to the album. He instantly captures the listener’s attention on the opener “Feel The Vibe.” The Anderson .Paak-assisted groove sets the mood for the rest of the album. With lyrics like, “Come on in, close the door and feel the vibe” and “Talkin’ shit with the old heads / Mama dancin’ to some Al Green,” BJ paints a picture of a summertime get together at a Black household. The rest of the album is packed with lush R&B sounds that acts as solid proof as to why the album is up for a Grammy nomination. — Keithan
7. Anderson.Paak: Ventura
It’s a bit unbelievable that Oxnard and Ventura were made at the same time. The softer, more soulful of the two is the perfect example of when Anderson. Paak gives into his R&B side. Instrumentation plays a significant part in his fourth studio album, while the star-studded features (Smokey Robinson, Jazmine Sullivan, Brandy) are a worthy enhancement. Ventura provides a consistent smoothness with a flare that goes far beyond a common groove. — Danielle
6. Solange: When I Get Home
In one of the most richly textured R&B releases of 2019, Solange delivers an intriguing project powered by tight songwriting, lush musical arrangements, and beautiful vocal stylings. Recorded in various parts of the world spectrum, including New Orleans and Jamaica, the “warm, fluid, and more sensual” synesthesia she hinted in The New York Times Style Magazine last fall are rendered in slower numbers like “I’m a Witness” and “Jerrod.” Much of When I Get Home’s sonic appeal comes from Solange’s hometown Houston. The music she sings and vibes to on trippy, screwed solos “Stay Flo” and “Almeda” date back to the trademark DJ Screw era of the early 2000s. By the authentic sound of Home, it is baffling to think that Solange once expressed fear ahead of sending this astonishing Black art into the atmosphere. Of course, this collection of retro musical moods doesn’t repeat the purposeful intent of A Seat at the Table; but it’s a good thing it didn’t. – Antwane
5. Snoh Aalegra: Ugh, Those Feels Again
It has been a long time coming for Swedish soul crooner Snoh Aalegra as she released her first project First Sign under the stage name Sheri in 2010. Nearly 10 years later, Aalegra released one of the most intimate R&B albums of the year, – Ugh, those feels again. A project seemingly sent straight from the heavens, Aalegra’s sophomore LP serves as the sequel to 2016’s FEELS, and it features an introspective look at the tell-tale signs of falling in love, as heard on the album’s lead single “I Want You Around.” As a songwriter, Aalegra shines with her unforgettable hooks and haunting melodies on tracks such as “You” and “Whoa.” While her road to success has been a lengthy one, Aalegra’s breakthrough effort – Ugh, those feels again will remain a marveling stop along the way for R&B fans everywhere. – Anders
4. Jamila Woods: Legacy! Legacy!
Jamila Woods knows how to make a statement. Starting with the album’s track list, each song title is named after a significant person of color. Bridging blues, funk, hip-hop and soul, Woods summons and intertwines their energy on each track, which are individually significant in their own right. Weaving aspects of Blackness and womanhood, LEGACY! LEGACY! embarks on an elegantly expressive journey of finding and accepting yourself in a world where the cards aren’t always in your favor. — Danielle
3. India.Arie: Worthy
The fact that India.Arie continues to be a potent example that evolves the thought-inspiring messages she sings on every album 17 years after her fulfilling debut again lends to her meaningful position in the R&B world. On Worthy, her incredibly polished new album, it’s no different. The soulful veteran is back full force with refreshing, love-longing, and enlightening compositions that strike a chord in listeners. Clearly inspired by the state of the world, Arie evokes lyrical healing with momentous anthems like the funky “Rollercoaster” ride and the spellbinding track “What If?”. “That Magic,” a warm-weather love song, gloats on her masterful songwriting. Among the traditional R&B gems on Worthy is “Steady Love,” her inaugural number one hit on the urban adult-oriented radio format. Thanks to Arie for another mind-stimulating project; it’s just what the world needs. — Antwane
2. Lucky Daye: Painted
Lucky Daye may have seemingly appeared out of nowhere but his presence has been welcomed with open ears. The artistry of this New Orleans native was built in the latter half of his life, providing him with an expansive canvas. Daye balances traditional and innovative R&B stylings to craft his highly anticipated debut album, Painted. Roping listeners in with full-bodied vintage-inspired production, Daye’s official introduction to the world has left a rousing first impression. – Danielle
1. Ari Lennox: Shea Butter Baby
With comparisons to R&B greats such as Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill, Washington, D.C. native Ari Lennox stole the attention and hearts of R&B fans with her debut album Shea Butter Baby. As the first lady of J. Cole’s Dreamville Records, Lennox became a pillar of the label and helped bring it to the forefront of music this year.
She appeared on Cole’s song “Change” in 2016, but it was the Minnie Riperton-esque “Whipped Cream” where she shined on her own. Lennox brought this tender, yet soulful sound to her album, along with some sticky hooks, heard on tracks like “BMO” and “New Apartment.” Not only that, Shea Butter Baby introduces this generation to a unique voice easily comparable to Badu, as Lennox’s voice is almost instantly recognizable.
Shea Butter Baby’s titular song is certified gold by the RIAA, and the album snagged three Soul Train Award nominations. While the project did not receive many accolades during its run, it remains a staple piece of the late 2010s, sealing Lennox’s status as one of R&B’s reigning princesses. – Anders

MEGHAN TRAINOR FEAT. NICKI MINAJ - NICE TO MEET YA
[4.18]
Meghan, you need no introduction...
Alfred Soto: The pairing is quaint -- how 2014! Meghan Trainor attempts a makeover that vaporizes the essentials of a noxious image. Now she sounds like nobody at all. Nothing. [1]
Katie Gill: I can't decide who she's trying to be in this song but she's certainly trying to be someone ELSE. The pivot to a more heavy R&B sound, the whispered hook, the Nicki guest verse, this has "I am trying to reinvent myself, can we all finally forget about 'Me Too' now" written all over it. Pity that the reinvention comes with a distracting amount of vocal modulation and at the expense of anything actually Meghan Trainor about it. [3]
William John: A mishmash of instagrammable aphorisms, with a tired trope like a whispered chorus, is an improvement on undermining your self-empowerment aesthetic with a genetics polemic - but only just. [2]
Thomas Inskeep: Trainor's flailing, desperately trying to get her career back on track, but she's not up to the faux-dark trap-pop she's attempting here. Minaj, meanwhile, will clearly do anything for a check, except exert effort. Both of them should be embarrassed by this. [1]
Tobi Tella: I'm not saying Meghan Trainor was good when she was doing doo-wop pastiche, but at least it was a gimmick to hide the soullessness. The highlight of the song is Nicki's listless verse referencing monsters, reminding us of simpler times and much better songs. [3]
Kylo Nocom: Meghan Trainor is pop's biggest joke. Her demographic gets dragged daily: stans always have aversion towards anybody that dares to fill a niche for "soccer moms" or "the GP" (one of pop fandom's biggest mysteries; what makes you so different from "normal people that listen to music"?). The homogeneity of publications' takes on pop is less a side effect of poptimism than it is of stan culture; nobody wants to ignite the wrath of Twitter fanbases, so it's best to come after Ed Sheeran and P!nk as easy targets. Meghan's career of empowerment anthems is not amazing, but has never been enough to warrant the bandwagon of shit-talk she receives across the board. Any attempt at trying to justify her value as a musician feels as if it immediately starts off with contrarian intent rather than out of sincere enjoyment. Yet out of her hits, I'd be hard-pressed to say she's ever even had a truly horrible song. I've suffered through some of the worst of radio overplay and still can't remember ever changing the station whenever one of her songs comes on. My tolerance for her sincerity, no matter how poor the messaging ends up being, is high enough to find Meghan dumb fun. Her latest single expectedly doesn't fascinate lyrically, even if "I am blessed by the heavens" is remarkably badass in the two ways it's delivered, but nobody wants to talk about how fucking weird this is. The DNA of "Nice to Meet Ya" is loaded with referents: "Tongue" (the whispered chorus), "Loyal to Me" (millennial R&B revivalism as filtered through perceived "Spotify-core"), "Wasabi" (the ridiculous grinding bass), "Beez n the Trap" (though more "Soap," I'm not telling anybody to respect Melanie Martinez, plus Nicki's entrance completely re-contextualizes the drop), any Zedd song that used the dumbass vocoder. It'd be easy to shit on this as desperate if it actually sounded like any hit on the radio right now; as is, it's a complete Frankenstein of various tropes catered directly to my tastes. Meghan Trainor provides a lesson for us all: being perceived as pop's biggest tryhard might just means she's trying more than 99% of people out there. Looks like her hard work has paid off. [9]
Katherine St Asaph: Can you have a consistent identity -- "brand," we'd say now -- if The Discourse has decided your identity is actually something else? Meghan Trainor has been made into a punchline, all her music just elaboration on the joke. (To be fair, that weird horny press release for the EP didn't help.) But that music, the actual sounds on recording, is a consistent string of millennial R&B singles as faithful and nervy as Rina Sawayama or Kehlani or LIZ or Raye, all of whom this would be praised for releasing this exact song minus the Meghan tag. The "blessed by the heavens" hook and faux-brass backing would be celebrated if this were a single by Ariana Grande or Fifth Harmony, for whom it may well have been written. (Camila would do the whispered vocals, right?) Critics may even like it, if only for the near-quote in the synth hook of Cassie's "Me and U." [7]
Wayne Weizhen Zhang: Given the delightfully entertaining chaos of Meghan Trainor's career as of late -- from that crazy UTI-inducing press release, to the catchy (eu)genetics song, to her somehow being involved in the comeback reunion of the Pussycat Dolls --- I really wanted to like this. But my actual reaction aligns more closely with what Nicki says halfway though her verse: "Ha, ha, ha-ha, ha, ha-ha-ha." [4]
Brad Shoup: Trainor's uncanny chorus makes this one feel like it's 70% percent Minaj. It's actually better than Minaj's cashed-in favor of a verse, which opts for the safe syllabic choice every time. Still, mark another square on the bingo card: Trainor's made throwback snap-pop. [4]
Joshua Lu: Treat Myself being a decent album isn't particularly surprising, given how most of Meghan Trainor's 2019 releases showcased her affinity for making easily digestible but pristine pop music. "Nice to Meet Ya" isn't the best offering, but it is emblematic of its parent album's general formula: histrionically sassy lyricism, production that doesn't skimp on vocoder or random bloopy noises, and a general feeling of datedness, best brought in with Nicki Minaj's most genuinely carefree verse since the Roman Reloaded era. Maybe it's a sign of my aging taste, or just sympathy for a struggling pop star whose career I've enjoyed observing for the past six plus years, but I find myself entirely willing to appreciate what this fun little pop song has to offer. [7]
Jackie Powell: Meghan Trainor has been through the wringer in the lead up to the release of her third album TREAT MYSELF. According to an interview with the Zack Sang Show, Trainer was stalled during a time where there was a lot of "traffic" in the market. But also, she was told that she could simply produce a better product and Epic records could afford to give her that time. Almost two years ago, TSJ reviewed "No Excuses," which had a memorable chorus but fell flat, more like a Fifth Harmony B-side than a Trainor track. "Nice to Meet Ya" is sonically more dynamic than "No Excuses" but at times sounds like a structural carbon copy of Ariana Grande's mega-hit "Problem." Whispered hook: check. Bridge formed by a female rapper: check. (Nicki Minaj's verse works, but its main function has been for hip-hop choreographers, which is fine I guess.) Although I wonder what would have ensued if Trainor's husband and former Spy Kid Daryl Sabara took over the whispering duties from his wife on the post-chorus, akin to Big Sean on the Grande cut. But apparently, he is credited for backing vocals? Trainor has been notorious for "repetitive pop," and lately has leaned into her song titles too much. While "Genetics" was upgraded with a Pussycat Dolls feature, I can't help but cringe when the word is spelled out. And don't get me started on "Evil Twin." Trainor has difficulty with her lede. Her lede is either forced or buried, which is something that transpires on this latest single. What would happen if she didn't begin her songs with the title? What would "Nice to Meet Ya" have sounded like without its hook, which consists of the whispering? This single could have easily been named "What I Want to Be" which might be less cutesy than "Nice to Meet Ya," but it's a bit more appropriate for where Trainor is in her life. Something that's unfortunate about Trainor is how she consistently forces the issues she's bringing to the surface. Don't get me wrong, her message is vital for her audience, but maybe she can use a metaphorical editor or another producer or songwriter who can relate to and understand her message, altering it so that it isn't oversold. A growing number of memes with "Idea Woman's Eye" are being created as we release this post. This is a perfect instance of fast memejacking. Can you think of a means your brand name could "memejack" this meme? If your customers as well as clients are players, after that indeed, certainly you need to utilize it. This is an additional instance of a video meme, developed in celebration of the Breaking Poor TV show:
What Is a Meme as well as Just How Did It Come from? Memes are one of the most viral pieces of info online. They are all over; they get shared, they get recreated, they often make returns. Any picture, visuals or video clip can be developed into a viral meme. Inning accordance with Merriam-Webster, a meme is: " A concept, habits, design or use that spreads from one person to another within a culture. An entertaining or interesting thing (such as a captioned photo or video) or genre of products that is spread out widely on the internet, particularly via social media sites." The term "meme" was created by writer as well as evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins in 1976 in his publication The Selfish Gene. From there, it progressed into the net phenomenon we understand today. Memes have become prominent similarly that GIFs have, spreading from one person to another using social sharing sites, emails as well as messaging. You may be asking on your own now, "however just what is the distinction in between a meme and also a GIF?" A GIF is a bent, computer animated photo which can be made use of in messages, e-mail and social media sites. A GIF is normally funny as well as can often come to be viral. A GIF can be a meme but a meme isn't necessarily a GIF.
8 Meme Instances and The Best Ways To Successfully Jack a Meme Along with the few instances we cooperated the intro to this blog post, have a look at some of one of the most popular memes of the previous decade to get a feeling of exactly what memes can be around. We consisted of some captions simply for marketing experts on the Vid Siphon Review listed below ... 1. Kermit: But That's None of My Business
At simply the ideal minute, Kermit the Frog ends up being an amusing design template for easy hostility. The subtitle listed below the photo of Kermit constantly remains the very same; it's the subtle gripe above Kermit that makes this meme yours. The meme could help you express your audience's normal challenges-- yet that's none of my service. 2. Futurama Fry: Unsure If
You do not have to be a follower of the TV show, Futurama, to value the appearance of uncertainty on the face of Fry, shown over. This meme is known by its opening expression, "Uncertain if ..." It permits any type of user to memejack the rest with a subtitle that explains an amusing, possibly overstated uncertainty amongst their audience. 3. Be Like Expense Simplicity is the source of the funny in this meme. Meet Costs, a lovable stick-figure design for the actions you understand your target market would endorse. All you have to do is explain him in three lines, all leading up to "Be Like Expense," the last caption on every model of this preferred meme. 4. What Individuals Believe I Do
Some memes are developed to identify with the online reputation struggles of your target market. The one over speaks for itself. When HubSpot memejacked the "What Individuals Believe I Do/What I Truly Do" meme for our Facebook web page, our sales-themed meme generated a remarkable 453 likes, 57 remarks, and 256 shares, while our marketing expert version built up a monstrous 460 sort, 53 comments, and 337 shares. 5. Success Kid
Success Child is a meme that has actually stood the test of time. There's no needs text on this-- it's a theme for any type of extreme lucky break you know your target market would resonate with. The inscription above functions as a real tale: the tiniest changes to your contact us to activity (CTA) copy can alter its appeal tremendously. 6. Buzz Lightyear: Anywhere
The characters above requirement no intro, but this meme might. With his arm around Woody, Buzz Lightyear supplies a motion of optimism (or mockery, depending upon just how you play this) for your target market. For Vid Siphon Review marketing professionals, the best lead magnets could generate even more leads compared to you ever before believed possible ... Buzz's words, not mine. 7. Boromir: One Does Not Simply
You could acknowledge this handsome soldier from The Lord of the Rings trilogy. But Boromir, kid of Denethor, is much more than a warrior of Gondor. In the scene above from the Fellowship of the Ring, Boromir discusses exactly how "one does not merely" walk into Mordor, a bad region of Center Earth where couple of have actually made it through. Everybody has their own version of Boromir's grave caution. In advertising and marketing circles, Google could also be Mordor for search engine optimization (SEO) experts. 8. Puss in Boots: Old Spice Guy
While a lot of memes are very easy to pirate, some could be a little bit much more difficult if aspects like video clip are included. For instance, DreamWorks showcased its Shrek-based character, Puss in Boots playing the Old Flavor Male in the above trailer to advertise the 2011 film spinoff, Puss in Boots. However, even memes that have stemmed as videos have been successfully adjusted into photos, as obvious by the Old Seasoning Guy meme, which originated as a series of videos. However hey, if you have a talent for video clip as well as feel you could hijack that preferred new video meme, go for it!
GIF Memes A GIF meme is a GIF that has actually come to be a meme after being shared exponentially. GIF memes are quite preferred because they are so simple to share and can be fairly funny. They can be little bits of a video clip or a group of photos or development of a procedure.
Some GIF memes are created by using a cutout GIF positioned on any history, to tell whatever amusing tale the creator desires. "Overwhelmed Travolta" is a traditional instance of this fad. This is the intermediary that any person could make use of to make their very own GIF meme:
Here is an instance of exactly what could be finished with the cutout. The opportunities of ways to utilize this are limitless. Simply go into Giphy as well as search for "confused travolta" to see how many choices there are.
Social Memes Social memes are social posts that were shared on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram and afterwards ingrained, screenshot and replicated by various other customers. Social memes normally begin as "viral tweets" then blow up from there. There are lots of amusing people worldwide that think of hashtag prompts that also occasionally lead to memes, such as this one for the #explainafilmplotbadly hashtag.
How You Can Make Use Of Memes for Marketing The first thing to take into account when thinking about carrying out Vid Siphon advertising and marketing for your brand is that memes are not for everybody. The very best memes are funny as well as typically have a jokingly kind of wit to them. Memes are likewise liked by more youthful target markets who invest a great deal of time online. If your brand name is light-hearted as well as deals with all ages, after that meme advertising might be a great way to go. If your brand name is extra significant, then utilizing meme marketing can polarize your audience. With that said said, allow's take a look at how memes could be made use of for advertising.
1 Memejacking The term used for taking a meme and also using it for your very own purposes is called "memejacking." Memejacking could be either when you make use of a meme that currently exists and include your own discourse in the share box, or when you develop a brand-new meme in reaction to a currently existing meme. The Nintendo video clip and memes we shared above are perfect examples of memejacking.
2 Difficulties You could also take part in an on-line video clip meme difficulty like the "Harlem Shake" or "Mannequin Obstacle." This happens when the original meme/video becomes the ideas for the challenge. When you take part of the challenge as well as create your personal video, you need to then publish it on social networks. You likewise have to see to it you use the pertinent hashtag. For example: #harlemshake or #mannequinchallenge. We do not recommend you make use of these meme obstacle instances for any future marketing projects because they have actually currently passed their minute of glory. To recognize exactly what is trending in terms of meme difficulties, you need to be energetic on social networks. This is the initial Mannequin Obstacle video that inspired many others.
The best ways to Make a Meme: Finest Practices for Memejacking Due to the fact that memes are typically really basic (like the one I produced by pirating the 'Y U NO' Person meme), they're typically straightforward productions. Some fundamental understanding of a photo editing tool like Photoshop (or hey ... even Microsoft Paint can often do the trick) could be available in convenient when hijacking brand new memes. Yet you'll find there tons of meme templates around, like Meme Generator, quickmeme, and also Make a Meme-- all of which make it very basic to pirate prominent memes. For example, to create my meme for this message, I conducted a Google look for "Y U No Individual Meme Generator," as well as stumbled upon MemeGenerator.net's tool, allowing me to produce the meme imagined at the top of this blog post. As soon as you select a device you like, you could either choose from the blank memes in the tool's gallery, or publish your own. Then, you'll have the choice to personalize the message on the top and bottom of the image you have actually chosen. Then, download your freshly Vid Siphon meme and post it on the channel of your deciding on. Just be sure to add extra context if the meme is being shared together with a larger tale or campaign. All set to do some memejacking of your very own? Here are our top memejacking pointers. Attempt to Get On it Quickly The most successful circumstances of memejacking for marketing take place when a meme goes to its tipping point-- it's started to spread hugely, yet couple of have actually pirated it. This is your memejacking sweet spot, given that memes could begin to feel old after every person and their mother has actually pirated it. To stay in advance of the contour and also remain on top of trending memes as they begin cropping up, browse social bookmarking sites like Reddit or StumbleUpon, which are known to surface up-and-coming memes before even more mainstream socials media like Twitter and facebook. Actually, just remaining well linked online as well as abreast of the current news could keep you in addition to the most up to date splitting memes. Recognize the Meme Before you memejack, ensure you're well informed regarding just what the meme means and indicates. The last thing you wish to do is offend your target market or memejack something you wouldn't have if you had totally recognized the connotations of it. The good news is, the individuals at Know Your Meme are typically on top of the prominent memes, their backgrounds, and their specialties so you could identify whether a meme is proper for your target market. Ask Yourself, "Will Our Target Market Appreciate It?" To piggyback off the last factor, understand that using memes will just succeed in your marketing if your audience values the particular meme you're hijacking. If your target market doesn't have any connection to the meme, does not understand it, or doesn't assume it's amusing, it doesn't matter if it's already been wildly preferred among a general net audience. See to it it's Relatable to Your Brand Most notably, see to it your memejacking isn't really at the expenditure of being relatable. The way you pirate your meme ought to have something to do with your brand, sector, and so on. If it's a stretch to produce a funny meme that connects to your brand name, then it's most likely not worth doing. The most effective memejacks are those that cleverly include some significance of the brand-- its industry, messaging, goal, motto, and so on . Keep in mind, uploading material regarding topics related to your brand typically produces one of the most involvement. To puts it simply, uploading material unassociated to your brand name-- like the most up to date internet meme that could in no way be aligned with your brand name-- simply isn't mosting likely to suffice.

How to Use Non-Obvious Thinking to Create Better Content
“We’re in the middle of a believability crisis.”
On the surface, author Rohit Bhargava’s observation in the keynote talk of CMI’s virtual ContentTECH this year doesn’t bode well for content marketing.
After all, to attract and retain an audience, we need people to believe the content we’re creating.
But don’t be discouraged by Rohit’s pronouncement. Instead, get inspired by the deeper meaning uncovered (true to form for the CEO of the Non-Obvious Company) in this crisis and other trends.
Rohit’s done much of the work for you, offering up a “stealable idea” for each trend he shared in the 2018 edition of his best-selling book series Non-Obvious: How to Predict Trends and Win the Future.
Here are three trends (and suggestions for what to do about them) Rohit predicts will have a big impact on content marketing this year and possibly in years to come.
HANDPICKED RELATED CONTENT: Fact-Checking for Content Marketers: How to Protect Credibility in the Era of Fake News [Checklist]
Non-Obvious trend: Manipulated outrage
Media, algorithms, and advertising combine to create a perpetual stream of noise often intended to incite rage and illicit reactionary anger usually shared through social media.
Sometimes outrage is reasonable and justified. Sometimes it’s packaged and sold to generate clicks and views. Cable news, Rohit points out, is having a banner year because it’s selling outrage.
What’s the problem?
“When you think of yourself as a person who is outraged, you don’t give yourself permission not to be outraged because it doesn’t feel like you,” Rohit says.
He shares the example of Steven Crowley, who coped with his baby daughter’s illness by editing her image into a photo series of dangerous situations. When he posted the humorously altered images on social media, he was met by a storm of misplaced fury as people criticized him for endangering his child.

HANDPICKED RELATED CONTENT: 27 Reasons Why Your Content Sucks
Steal this idea: Rise above the clickbait
Can you use this outrage trend to improve your content? Rohit thinks it’s possible if you respect it’s there – and move away from it.
Before you go for the easy click prompted by outrage, shock, or fear, remember that those kinds of headlines rarely result in sustained engagement.
Don’t go for the easy click prompted by shock if you want to sustain engagement, says @rohitbhargava. Click To Tweet
To understand why, consider how you feel when you fall for a headline such as “See what (your favorite childhood star) looks like now” or other clickbait ploy. Aren’t you a little embarrassed and possibly annoyed by the 45-page slideshow you wade through to get to the star? You click through a few slides, but as you progress you feel worse and worse about your decision – and turn away quickly.
“We know what this feels like,” Rohit says, “so let’s not go in this direction.”
Instead, he suggests, “put something more positive, useful, and valuable out into the world.”
I came across an example of content that deliberately rises above the ploys in the home design content industry. You’ve probably seen at least one “10 Trends We Hate” or “X Trend Is Officially Dead” article. They are popular and produce engagement – often in the form of heated comments defending or attacking one of the trends. But the negativity wears on the rest of the audience and the content creators. Take a spin through the comments on Apartment Therapy to see plenty of vitriol directed at the site content, content producers, featured design choices, and sometimes other commenters.
Design*Sponge founder Grace Bonney recently countered this trend with a thoughtful essay explaining what she’s learned about why people make the design choices they do, the reasons commonly given for criticizing those choices, and how she’s planning to change her site’s content to counter negativity.
My thoughts and feelings about design, decoration and the general world of creatives have greatly evolved over the years and as I recognize and work to rectify mistakes of my own, it’s making me realize how steeped in judgment so much design writing can be. This includes my own writing (I used to think it was my job to declare something ‘good’ or ‘bad’ and I could not have been more wrong) and it’s something that we are working, as a team, to improve upon and hopefully foster here in discussions on the blog and on social media.
The reaction? A thoughtful, nuanced discussion of design and content – an enjoyable and informative read all the way through the comments.

Non-Obvious trend: Brand stand
Reacting to a polarized media atmosphere, more brands feel compelled either by choice or necessity to take a stand and offer a distinct point of view about the world.
This trend isn’t new — Rohit points to REI, which took a stand against Black Friday consumerism starting in 2015 — but it’s definitely accelerating.
youtube
What has changed, Rohit says, is that “what you believe as a company has to be front and center in everything your company does.”
What you believe as a company has to be front and center in everything your company does, says @rohitbhargava. Click To Tweet
Why? Because people want to know.
A new study from Sprout Social finds that most consumers (66%) think it’s important for brands to “take a public stand on social and political issues.”

HANDPICKED RELATED CONTENT: How One Brand Created a Movement by Investing in Purpose
Steal this idea: Create a reason to believe in your brand
You’re probably all too aware of executives’ skepticism of proposals that require investment but don’t directly lead to sales.
Imagine how they would greet a proposal to take employees out of their day jobs and send them into the community to walk people’s dogs or buy them some ice cream or a tank of gas.
The executives at SoCal Honda Dealers approved it. Rohit says they signed off because no one (wisely) tried to convince them free ice cream would sell cars. They bought into the idea of presenting their dealership staff as helpful members of the community to get more people to think of Honda (and visit Honda showrooms) when they’re ready to look for a car. After that, it’s the sales team’s job to close the deal.
Sure, the Honda dealers could have chosen to spend that money on advertising. But that’s what nearly every other car dealership does. Honda invested in a brand stand of random acts of helpfulness.
Rohit says a brand making a statement like that gives people a reason to believe in the company, a reason to come in and check it out.
Non-Obvious trend: Back-storytelling
Organizations uncover that one of their greatest assets to inspire loyalty from customers and employees alike can come from taking people behind the scenes of their brand and history.
A mainstay of About Us pages and brand videos, origin stories have been hot for a while. Most likely your brand has so many more stories in its history and the potential to tell them in a way that’s unique to your brand voice.
One of Rohit’s favorite examples comes from the Hans Brinker Budget Hotel Amsterdam, which loves to say that it’s been “proudly disappointing travellers for 40 years.”
With a sense of humor consistent across social media and in its signage, the hotel has managed to turn its no-frills nature from a reason to avoid the place into a reason to seek it out.

HANDPICKED RELATED CONTENT: Brand Museums: How Companies Tell Their Stories
Steal this idea: Find your meaning, then tell great stories about it
Rohit points to the brand documentary Make Haste Slowly: The Kikkoman Creed, which kicks off with a spectacular origin story, using artful but simple animation to depict the company’s founding by the widow of a Shogun warlord who fled her home with a young son in fear for her life. The 25-minute documentary also traces how the 16 articles established long ago still guide the company today.
I know I won’t look at soy sauce, an inexpensive grocery item, in quite the same way now that I’ve watched the company’s story.

HANDPICKED RELATED CONTENT: Brand Backstory: Where Your Content Marketing Strategy Is Born
One bonus idea to steal: Curate trends yourself
One of the best ideas to steal is one Rohit openly teaches – how to curate non-obvious ideas yourself.
Content marketers are natural curators, though it can be tough to find the gems that everyone else overlooks. To do that, Rohit recommends you develop five habits:
Be observant. Pay attention to the things most people don’t. (Yes, you must look up from your phone.)
Be curious. Ask more questions, especially about things not in your typical information circles.
Be fickle. Don’t dwell on something. Capture it, process it, and move on to the next idea.
Be thoughtful. Really consider the material you’re curating and come up with your own opinion about it.
Be elegant. Simplify what you share with your audience.
Really consider the material you’re curating & come up with your own opinion about it, says @rohitbhargava. Click To Tweet
By cultivating these habits, Rohit says, you’ll learn to spot the intersections between ideas. And, because you’ll be using sources others likely miss, you’ll come up with ideas others don’t.
You can hear more about the non-obvious trends Rohit Bhargava spots (and his detailed method for collecting them) in his ContentTECH webinar. To listen in, you can access all sessions for free until May 28, 2018.

Meet ISOLDE: Future physics with HIE-ISOLDE
Harriet Jarlett HIE-ISOLDE has innovated many new ideas, particularly in space-saving solutions. One way the engineers kept the system compact was to build cryomodules that each contain five cavities, not just one (Image: Maximilien Brice/ CERN) This week, ISOLDE, CERN’s nuclear physics facility, is celebrating 50 years of physics. But after half a century of studying radioactive isotopes, the facility is on the brink of a new phase in its history, as its upgrade, HIE-ISOLDE, nears completion. “ISOLDE makes sure that it is always improving,” says Razvan Lica, a CERN PhD student working at the ISOLDE facility. . Watch the fourth part in our documentary series about ISOLDE to find out more about the HIE-ISOLDE upgrade and the people building it. (Video: Christoph Madsen/CERN) The HIE-ISOLDE upgrade, which will allow ISOLDE to collide beams of isotopes into targets at higher energies, is a chance for the facility to reinvent itself. The HIE stands for High Intensity and Energy, and physicists hope that it will guarantee ISOLDE another ten to fifteen years at the forefront of this area of research. Currently, to produce radioactive isotopes, ISOLDE takes proton beams from one of CERN’s accelerators, the Proton Synchrotron Booster (PSB) and fires them into a target. The target then sends out many radioactive isotopes, which can be directed down beamlines to various experiments. HIE-ISOLDE uses a new, unique, linear accelerator (linac) to take these beams and accelerate them again, before sending them on to secondary targets, where nuclear reactions occur.  The new linac had to fit into just 16 m of space. “We had to develop a very compact linac. That’s what makes it unique. In other facilities, every cavity has its own cryostat but if we had to do that it would be far too long, so we had to squeeze all of them into one cryomodule. We had to have the solenoids fitted too, they’re almost the same length as a cavity, so we had to do lots of design, research and development. The biggest challenge was to design in spaces with clearances of just 1 mm,” explains Yacine Kadi, project leader for HIE-ISOLDE. (Image: Maximilien Brice/CERN) “When we talk about elements we use their proton number. A heavy element is one with a higher proton number, but you can have many different isotopes of the same element. These have the same proton number but a different number of neutrons,” explains Liam Gaffney, who works on the Miniball set-up, attached to one of the HIE-ISOLDE beamlines. Physicists like Liam use these isotopes to research a range of topics, from astrophysics, by recreating reactions that happen in the stars, to the internal structure and shape of exotic nuclei, giving us an insight into the building blocks of the world around us. “Previously we couldn’t do as many of the reactions as we wanted to with radioactive isotopes, as the beam energy wasn’t high enough. To study the shape of the nuclei of the heaviest elements we need higher energies to overcome an increase in the nuclei charge. More protons means a higher positive charge, and since two positive nuclei repel each other, it means a higher energy is needed to collide them,” he continues. “Higher energy opens a new field. We had a stepping stone with the REX upgrade, when ISOLDE first introduced the possibility of reaccelerating isotopes, in 2001, but with the higher energies from HIE-ISOLDE, it’s a new realm,” says Karl Johnston, ISOLDE’s physics coordinator, who hopes the upgrade will mean even more applications are found for ISOLDE’s research. Future-proofing The energy upgrade means that ISOLDE can now collect information about the properties of nuclei that were previously not accessible. Eventually, researchers will also be able to study isotopes with even more or even fewer neutrons, which are less stable and harder to produce in a laboratory. So far these isotopes have been out of the reach of physicists. There are currently three spaces for experiments to be attached to HIE-ISOLDE, with the hope that seven or more will eventually run each year. There is one permanent station attached to the linac, called Miniball, seen here, which can be set up to run multiple different experiments (Image: Julien Ordan/CERN) “Higher energy gives us the chance to study many different things. We focus on fundamental questions concerning the structure of nuclei,” explains Liam. “Studying reactions inside the stars to learn more about how the different elements are produced. Asking questions like: why are there so many heavy elements, like uranium, on the planet?” “HIE-ISOLDE is a major breakthrough and is the result of almost eight years of research and development, of prototyping and design. It’s a huge adventure and what makes us most proud isn’t even that we managed to build the machine but that from the start we have seen new physics and new, enthusiastic users,” enthuses Maria Borge, who led the ISOLDE group from 2012 to 2017. Challenge accepted “Engineers told me it was mission impossible” - Yacine Kadi, leader of the HIE-ISOLDE project But building a machine of this scope hasn’t been easy. Yacine Kadi, who leads the HIE-ISOLDE project, starts to laugh as he spends minutes listing the challenges the project faced. Each cryomodule contains more than 10 000 parts, which need to be carefully cleaned, calibrated and installed. (Image: Maximilien Brice/CERN) With scarce resources, the design and development phase of the project relied on early-career researchers to carry out the majority of the work. It was a risk that paid off: “We didn’t have the resources to hire virtually any staff, but we made sure we only took the absolute best – we couldn’t afford not to – and they did a fantastic job. But then they left before the project was finished!” he explains. With his fair share of challenges, Yacine had to rethink construction materials when the metal niobium proved too costly, and amend original plans to avoid a building crossing the border between Switzerland and France. “Engineers told me it was mission impossible,” exclaims Yacine. “It was a big, complex project and the choices we made weren’t things we had much experience of at CERN. This meant we had to develop novel ideas and at the same time profit from technological breakthroughs made at CERN, for the Lepton Positron Collider (LEP). In the end it was just a question of the imagination of our physicists and technical staff.” The inflatable T-Rex at HIE-ISOLDE is the mascot of the REX experiment, which was an earlier post-accelerator at ISOLDE. (Image: Julien Ordan/CERN) HIE-ISOLDE is unique in its design because it had to fit a lot of accelerating power into a very compact space. Linear accelerators use radiofrequency cavities to accelerate a beam. Normally an accelerator will house each one of these cavities in its own cryostat – a vacuum chamber that supercools the cavity so that the helium needed for the superconductors to work stays liquid – but HIE-ISOLDE didn’t have the room for each cavity to have its own cryostat. Instead, one way the engineers kept the system compact was to build cryomodules that each contain five cavities but require only one cryogenic system. “Yes, HIE-ISOLDE was a challenge from a technical point of view, but it was a major human adventure for me. You increase your field of knowledge, and you work in different domains, so you meet many different people. I met people I wouldn’t ever have met even after spending forty years at CERN,” he continues. Currently, HIE-ISOLDE is nearing the completion of its energy upgrade and has already had two successful running periods with more than 15 experiments. The last of the four superconducting cryomodules is due to be installed over the winter shutdown in 2018, and will allow the machine to accelerate the radioactive beams to energies of 10MeV/u. “Others might get to that energy but no other facility in the world can accelerate very heavy nuclei. We can do that,” says Maria, emphasising the importance of this new upgrade, which cements ISOLDE’s role at the forefront of nuclear physics for the foreseeable future.    This week, ISOLDE, CERN’s nuclear facility, is celebrating 50 years of physics with a series of articles and a short documentary series that takes a closer look at the facility and the people that work there. I bet by now you’ve heard about the AWS S3 outage. Somewhat ironically, at 17:47 last night I was watching a training video on Amazon Web Services (AWS) Simple Storage System (S3) best practices when the video stopped. The video service, hosted on AWS as you would expect, wouldn’t refresh so I decided to look up some AWS S3 documents instead. However, my browser displayed a HTTP 500 (service unavailable) from aws.amazon.com. It was highly unusual and thus unexpected. The AWS status page was showing a sea of green so, like anyone else looking for near-real time news, I searched Twitter for “AWS 500”. Was anyone else seeing this? Yes, but just a few people. I’d encountered what was the start of the “February 28th AWS US-East-1 S3 Increase Error Rates,” or the Twitter trend called “Amazon S3 Outage.”is it just me getting HTTP 500 from https://t.co/4OvzDj0RTd? http://pic.twitter.com/EsuPVGpu2s— UK Cloud Pro (@ukcloudpro) February 28, 2017Cue social media reactions: sarcastic meme-driven humor: “Oh my god the Internet is dead”; shrieking; gloating competitors; private cloud apologists; and anti-cloud ideologues.Amazon S3 according to the #AWS status page. http://pic.twitter.com/WpMAyHs0nY— David C. Campbell (@DCCampbell) February 28, 2017However, there is “signal” in this social noise and here are five important things to take away from the AWS S3 “event.”1. AWS wasn’t down, but US East 1 was “impaired”AWS is a global cloud service made up of 16 regions and counting. When people on Twitter shrieked “AWS is down!” this wasn’t true. The reality was that an important service in one region was impaired, but other regions were A-OK.Source: Amazon Web Services These regions are completely independent of each other, except for the special US-East-1 region which handles some global services. And inside each region you have multiple availability zones (AZ) which you can think of as datacenters. These datacenters are resilient with their own redundant power and connectivity, and they’re also connected to each other inside the region so that services like S3 can automatically replicate your data three times – giving you data durability of eleven nines. The standard availability of the S3 service is four nines.Source: Amazon Web Services What we experienced yesterday was the S3 service in the Region US-East-1 suffering from what AWS called “high error rates” and the service was impaired. Other regions were mostly OK, such as EU-West-1, but the US-East-1 S3 event had a wider “blast radius” because: When you create an S3 bucket and don’t specify a region, the default is US-East-1. US-East-1 is a special region, sometimes called a “global region,” because it’s the default endpoint for “global resources” such as hosted zones, resource record sets, health checks, and cost allocation tags. The S3 in US-East-1 is used by a lot of AWS services including the AWS Status Page and the AWS documentation. US-East-1 is huge (five AZs) and is older and more popular than other regions, running a lot of well-known online applications that use S3 to host their data. Therefore, the blast radius was very public on Twitter, with many companies explaining that their downtime was due to AWS. US-East-1 is in “spy country,” which will please the conspiracy theorists! Therefore, any impact to a core AWS service in a core AWS region like U- East-1 is likely to have a ripple-out service impact across a wide blast radius.2. Why did the S3 impairment in one region have such a big impact?S3 is sometimes referred to as “the storage for the Internet” because it’s used everywhere. Any object like a thumbnail or log record put into it is easily accessible over HTTP from anywhere. Your app doesn’t have to be running on AWS, it could be running in your datacenter and accessing S3 over the Internet. When Amazon S3 is down. #awscloud #awss3 http://pic.twitter.com/KQo4sVvkAl— Fernando (@fmc_sea) February 28, 2017S3 is the epitome of one of the core “essential cloud characteristics” from the NIST Cloud Standards: broad network access. It’s what makes AWS the public cloud leader. It also means that, because S3 is cheap and easy to use by any user with no special skills required, it’s used universally as the backing store for many trillions of objects serving millions of requests per second. Both AWS services and customer applications use S3, so it was like a house of cards even though other regions’ S3 was working fine.Source: ViewYonder Awkwardly, even the status indicators on the AWS service status page rely on S3 for the storage of its health marker graphics. And thus, during the outage the status page was showing all services as green despite the service being “impaired.” AWS did add a banner to the status page to explain why this was happening, and they did issue this tweet to keep customers informed. The dashboard not changing color is related to S3 issue. See the banner at the top of the dashboard for updates.— Amazon Web Services (@awscloud) February 28, 2017Twitter was awash with companies apologizing to customers for service degradation or outage, and looking at SimilarTech data – the number of sites they claim are running on AWS S3 is significant:Source: SimilarTech.com Interestingly home users were also affected with reports that parents couldn’t get Alexa to sing nursery rhymes to their children, i.e. failing to access Amazon Music, and home automation systems locking people in their homes (or into darkness).4. People don’t always use the redundant AWS servicesEven though there are multiple AZs in one region, and multiple regions across the world, not everyone uses these availability features for a range of reasons:Unknown dependencies on S3. An application running in one region can be accessing data from an S3 in another region across the Internet – it’s just a URL, and developers are known to hardcode filesystem paths and URLs into their code. As applications age, do developers keep track of where data is coming from? You would think so, but humans make mistakes and dependencies can accrue over time to create fragile applications.Cloud-immigrant applications. Within AWS, customers can deploy applications that are not cloud native and cannot benefit from “distributed computing” that multi-AZ and multi-regions offer. It might be an old, monolithic, and fragile COTS (commercial off-the-shelf) product that stubbornly sits in a “snowflake” virtual machine running the database locally. If this virtual machine is in a failing AZ or region, then it’s back to standard backup, restore, and disaster recovery scenarios. EC2 in the US-East-1 region was affected because many EC2 virtual machines use S3 for storage.Availability isn’t worth the cost. There are those that understand the technology but don’t want to pay for the extra resources such as multi-AZ databases, or pay for lots of snapshots, or pay for cross-region replication or many of the other HA/DR (high availability/disaster recovery) features AWS makes readily available. “That app isn’t worth the costs of availability” might be the view – but has this been really worked out? Which other applications rely on this application? This isn’t unique to cloud. For as long as IT has been around, people have chosen to save money on HA/DR, or not even known it was something they needed to consider. 5. “Knee Jerks” attempt to muddy the waterWhenever AWS has an issue there are a three types of commentator to surface on social media, what I like to call “Knee Jerks”:The AWS-bashing competitor: “AWS has an outage! Time to reconsider and use our cloud.” It’s unlikely that you will see Azure or Google bashing AWS but you might see an anti-cloud enterprise technology vendor or smaller, regional service provider naively bashing AWS during an outage. I don’t know any businesses that are impressed by competitor bashing. The hybrid/private cloud ideologues: “Public cloud places all your eggs in one basket and is flawed – use our hybrid cloud and hedge your bets.” Whatever people say hybrid cloud might be, and there’s no consensus or standard, it couldn’t do what S3 does. So this point is moot and shows a lack of understanding of modern Internet and cloud architectures. The anti-cloud on-premises techie: “If it was your own kit you’d be able to troubleshoot it yourself! Can’t do that in the cloud!” But this is the whole point of cloud – I don’t want to troubleshoot it myself! AWS has all the skills and know-how and resources I don’t have. This is usually a techie blinded by their fear of the cloud, who wants us to build IT systems in a shed at the end of their garden. It’s unlikely that anyone who understands AWS will pay any attention to this kind of rhetoric, but non-cloud-savvy business users might unfortunately be influenced by this kind of fear, uncertainty, and doubt. The calm after the stormEventually, AWS got it status page working and it didn’t look pretty, in fact it was commented on that some long-running cloud users had never seen this before. It’s quite a testament to AWS long-term reliability:Source: Amazon Web ServicesAWS will fix this issue and their service will return to normal (and will be by the time this is published). Then it will work out how to never have this particular issue/problem again – they have people like James Hamilton who live to find and solve these issues. And if you use AWS, then James is working for you.AWS will also produce a post-mortem and they are unique in leading cloud service providers in doing this – in my experience, many cloud service providers either don’t write outages up, or merely provide an exec-level generic blog piece. In the AWS post-mortem, we’ll find out what went wrong, how they fixed it, and what AWS is going to do better. And I’m certain that they will also tell their customers how they can do things differently too.Image CreditThe post 5 Things You Need To Know About The AWS S3 Outage appeared first on ITSM.tools.
