North Carolina || February 1989
Jamie frowned, looking back and forth between the shelf he’d just put together and the three unpacked boxes of books (two marked CLAIRE, one marked JAMIE).
Would she like them organized alphabetically by author? Genre? Size?
He rubbed the back of his neck, thinking. Or perhaps she wanted medical books in her workroom? And maybe he could put his music books on the cabinet in his studio –
“There you are.”
He hadn’t heard Claire pad into the room – at some point they would need to get throw rugs to protect the gorgeous old hardwood floors – and smiled as she effortlessly stepped into his embrace.
They held each other for a long moment – his lips against her hair, her face buried in the safety of his neck.
Almost three months since the acoustic tour had ended, the night before Claire’s birthday. About six weeks since they had closed on their dream house, nestled against a mountain in the forests of North Carolina, not too far from The Ridge. And about two weeks since the items in storage – from her packed-up apartment in Boston, and his packed-up house in Los Angeles – had arrived.
The property had everything they needed. Privacy and solitude, of course. An old barn that they were using as a garage for Jamie’s motorcycle and cars. The house – an old cabin, really, dating from the 1800s and which had been lovingly expanded over the years – was perfect. A spacious living room, complete with the original stone fireplace. An eat-in kitchen, with newly replaced appliances. Two small rooms off the back that were now his music studio and her workroom – spaces to pursue their interests. A modestly-sized master bedroom. And a small extra bedroom – which for now was for guests, though God willing would be a nursery very soon.
Claire had insisted on doing two things quickly, before spending their time unpacking all the boxes.
The first was to hang his six gold and two platinum records in his studio – and he agreed, after he had hung her framed medical school diploma on the wall of her workroom.
The second was to install the fax machine on the bare floor of the studio – which, together with the phone, was their only link to the outside world.
For as much as they isolated themselves in this beautiful, peaceful place – the world pushed along without them.
In March, they would leave for L.A. and three weeks of rehearsals with the band. Maybe play a few small gigs in clubs on the Sunset Strip – Jamie had always wanted to do that. And in April, they’d fly to Europe, and kick off the tour that had swelled to 120 dates and stretched into 1990.
Colum was busier than ever – finalizing logistics, negotiating with local promoters, running interference with the suits from the label, upgrading the concerts from arenas to soccer stadiums. He had a conference call with the band every Tuesday – with Ian calling in from Lallybroch in upstate New York, and Angus from various resort spots in Mexico and the Caribbean (“I can’t believe Charlotte and Molly haven’t worn him out yet,” Jamie had mused to Claire one day. She had only shrugged and said, “they take care of each other”). Colum would always have a punchlist of decisions for the band – OK to book studio time during the week off in Scandinavia in July? The roadies couldn’t figure out the pyro setup without the band, OK to wait until rehearsals? They would need to film at least three music videos, which one could be a live performance? – and follow up with decisions in a fax sent later that day.
Jamie had been clear with Colum that he had three conditions for the tour: that Claire would be with him, that Raymond would be traveling with the band, and that the same no alcohol/drugs/groupies rule from the acoustic tour would carry through to this tour. Of course Colum had agreed. Just as he’d agreed to make provisions for Jenny to periodically fly out to visit Ian, and for Angus to always have a suite with two bathrooms to keep his girlfriends happy.
Claire and Jamie knew that this tour would be difficult, for so many different reasons. But they would be better prepared this time, to draw strength from each other, and to have Raymond for support. And maybe, just maybe they would return home from Europe with the best souvenir of all…
“Another fax from Colum,” Claire murmured after a long while.
Jamie snorted against her hair. “I don’t know whether to be impressed or annoyed.”
“I do admire how hard he’s working for you and for the band. And how much he’s keeping all of you in the loop on the decisions he’s making. He doesn’t want any surprises.”
“I’d imagine not. The amount of bullshit he has to be putting up with right now must be insane. I just hope he doesn’t crack.”
“He never said if he’s bringing Tricia on the tour.” Tricia – Colum’s wife of more than ten years. She stood a head taller than her husband, still impossibly beautiful in her late thirties, smiling for every frown on her husband’s face. Claire had only met her once – couldn’t say she really knew her – but she knew enough about her.
How she had first met Colum at a party in 1970, when he was a roadie for Led Zeppelin and she was part of a gaggle of groupies that held court at the Riot House in L.A.
How, when she and her girlfriends joined the Led Zep tour the following summer, he had punched out the lighting guy at the Cow Palace in San Francisco when he heard the guy didn’t understand what Tricia meant by saying “no”.
How Geordie Ash – the reporter who had put Jamie (and, in a way, Claire) on the map last year with that Rolling Stone article – had sent flowers to her hotel room every day for a month during Led Zeppelin’s 1973 U.S. tour. Not knowing, of course, that she was allergic to lilies – or how Colum, who knew more about her by that point than he cared to admit, had wordlessly disposed of them for her, every day that month.
“I don’t think she likes to tour.” Jamie’s thumb traced lazy circles on the skin of Claire’s back. “Too many bad memories.”
If you asked any rock journalist or musician who had found Alex MacGregor – assistant to Led Zeppelin manager Peter Grant – dead in his Seattle hotel room in the spring of 1975, they would all say quite confidently that it had been Colum Laird, who by that point had advanced to lead Zeppelin’s touring crew.
But a handful of people – Peter Grant, and Colum, and Jamie, and now Claire – knew the truth.
Tricia woke up, Alex cold beside her in bed, a needle in his arm. The only thing she knew to do was slip quietly down the hall, tumbling into Colum’s room…and finally, his arms. Where she had remained ever since.
“I couldn’t imagine being away from you for so long.” Claire sighed. “I don’t know how they make it work.”
Jamie shrugged. “They love each other very deeply. They fixed the broken pieces in each other. And now she has the two boys to keep her busy.” He kissed her forehead. “Something for us to aspire to, perhaps. What’s in the fax?”
She held it out for him to read. Sharing a smile at Colum’s scrawl.
J+C: I’m not calling because I interrupted enough moments between you on tour and I’ll probably do it again this year. I don’t have Raymond’s info pls have him get in touch so we have a copy of his credentials and the travel agent can make all arrangements for Europe. I got the label to foot the bill for his travel meals and hotels, convinced them it’s a business expense, you’re welcome. Stay out of trouble. Colum.
“We’ll have him give Colum a call after he arrives this afternoon,” Jamie mused, folding the fax and sliding it into the back pocket of his jeans.
Claire nodded. “The guest room is all ready. And I’m glad Dougal and Gillian and William will be here tomorrow – I’m so happy they’re so close by.”
Jamie squeezed her shoulder, and released her. “As am I. Now, I have a question for you about these books…”

New single from Act III, “The Fight,” is now streaming on all the platforms. Click this link and pick your poison. We’re already up to like 30,000 plays on Spotify, so that’s something like 50 dollars! About 4 of us are gonna get to eat a burrito with that chunk of change (the other 4 will starve)!!! But seriously, we’re glad you’re all seeming to like it. There’s plenty more where that came from.
Cover design and new logo done by Caspar Newbolt with artwork by John DeLucca. I think they did a hell of a job, if I do say so myself.
And yeah… James Cameron may have beaten us by getting Avatar 2 out before we could release Act III, but mark my words, I almost somewhat guarantee that we’ll have Act III out before Avatar 5! The gauntlet has been thrown, Mr. Cameron. Come at us.
—FIGHT MERCH— Like that Fight art and new logo? Get it on some shirts! We’ve got a regular coal colored (nearly black) Tshirt, and girl-style scoop Tshirt to choose from.
And on top of that, we’ve got a pretty rad new raglan sweatshirt (raglan is the only way to go with sweatshirts. Believe me, I’m an expert).
We’ve also got a pretty awesome windbreaker (with some rain protection) pullover with silver-ish print. This sort of a jacket is a first for us, so let us know how you like it by buying it or not (whichever is funnier).
**please note** this new FIGHT merch will not ship in time for the holidays.
—CHICAGO— Our 2 shows at Reggies with Cybertronic Spree are now super sold out and we couldn’t be more excited to get back to Chicago for some Italian Hot Beef Sandwiches!…. and shows. See you there!
—EURO TOUR— And let’s not forget our upcoming Europe and UK tour! Get to a show and you’ll hear “The Fight,” as well as some other Act III jams. So get your tickets and help spread the word over there. Send your friends the link to “The Fight” to see if they like it and then bring them to a show even if they don’t. Maybe bring them to 5 shows. While you’re helping us with promotion, go ahead and start requesting “The Fight” at your local radio stations. And call in to TRL and demand that Cason Daly puts us on the show. Then Google who/what Carson Daly and TRL are.
MARCH 10th – Paris – Les Étoiles 11th – Amsterdam – Melkweg 12th -Berlin – Frannz Club 16th – London – Shepherd’s Bush 17th – Great Yarmouth – Sci-Fi Weekender 18th – Swansea – Sin City 19th – Oxford – 02 Academy 21st – Wolverhampton – KK’s Steel Mill 22nd – Glasgow – Stereo 23rd – Bradford – Nightrain
Remember that time in the last email where I said, “see you back here in about 3 weeks?” This is what I was talking about. Now that “The Fight” is out there, we’re gonna do the holiday thing for a bit, but then get right back into the studio at the start of the new year. Feeling good about this one.

Drogestructive|Drogeslichter: A gender related to heavy drinking, doing a lot of shots, cocaine, chainsmoking, Marlboro cigarettes, lighters, blacking out, partying all night, not sleeping for extended periods of time, driving recklessly, spray paint, rock clubs, self-destruction, messy cluttered bedrooms filled with beer and whisky bottles, tire marks, red and blue flashing lights, handcuffs, smirking mugshots, and getting bailed out of jail only to go right back to doing reckless stuff. It may also be chipped away like a brick wall, spray painted with messy street art/graffiti, and wrapped in police tape. This gender may also be related to the Guns N’ Roses songs Welcome to the Jungle and/or Nightrain, though it doesn't have to be.
The first name is a mix of drog(e) from Drogegender, es from Roses, (es)tructive from destructive/self-destructive. The second name is a mix of drog(e) from Drogegender, es from Roses and destructive/self-destructive, and lichter a suffix for lighter-related genders
The colors are inspired by my associations with the vibe of this term
This was for the fifth day of my coining event! Prompt: Welcome to the Jungle (Guns N’ Roses) // Nightrain (Guns N’ Roses)

Love bites
Love bleeds
It’s bringing me to my knees
-- “Love Bites,” Def Leppard (1988) [click here to listen]
Pittsburgh || Early October, 1988
Ian Murray hissed as his sister-in-law sutured the gash on his forearm.
Claire Fraser briefly glanced up before turning back to her work. “Are you going to tell Jenny about this, or is that something I’ll need to do?”
Ian sighed. “I’ll tell her. God knows she worries enough as it is.” He took a deep breath as Claire’s needle pierced his skin. “You know she hates not being on the road this tour – she’s so happy we’re finishing up next week, and that I’ll be home for the break. Young Jamie has been teething – she’s not sleeping too much these days.”
Jenny Fraser Murray – Jamie’s older sister, and Ian’s wife – lived with their three small children on the Fraser family farm in upstate New York. The farm where Jamie and Jenny had grown up, and where their mother Ellen had died when Jamie was eight and Jenny was ten, and where their grief-stricken father had raised them before suffering a fatal stroke eight years ago.
Growing up without a mother had been hard enough – but it was the loss of his father, just when Print was starting to make a name for itself in the New York City club circuit, that pushed Jamie into his addictions.
That neither of his parents had seen his success, was one of the deepest regrets of Jamie’s life. Which was perhaps why, Claire mused, he had always been so kind and thoughtful with her Uncle Lamb.
“Breathe deep. This is the last one.”
Ian did, and Claire quickly and thoroughly pushed the needle through Ian’s arm one final time, before tying off and cutting the suture.
“Good. All done, just one more thing.”
Claire unspooled a few lengths from her roll of elastic bandage – black, instead of the typical tan color – and wrapped it around Ian’s sutures. “Here you go. I want to check on this tomorrow, and the day after. You’ll need the stitches for at least a week, and you really shouldn’t get this wet.”
Ian took a deep breath and carefully flexed his hand. “The show is gonna be interesting tonight. But at least I can still play. Thank you, Claire.”
She smiled, already rolling up her suture kit and rearranging the medical bag that she’d had to use quite a few times this tour. “Glad to be of service.”
“Hey.” Ian touched her hand, and she met his gaze. “Give yourself a bit more credit. You bring more to the table than you know.”
Now it was her turn to sigh. “I feel so out of my depth sometimes,” she admitted, quiet so that the roadies out in the hall couldn’t hear. “You know that I know nothing about this world. Jamie is working so hard to show it to me, and you and Angus and even Colum have been so gracious.”
“You make it easy, Claire. Jamie loves you. We only want the best for you. And I – ” He squeezed her hand. “I really want you here. You’re such a breath of fresh air for all of us. He’s changed so much in the past year, and you’re a big reason for that. You’re good for each other.”
She smiled. “I never thanked you for being the one who got him to treatment.”
Ian snorted. “I was tired of watching him make bad choice after bad choice. It only got worse as the band got bigger – I’m sure he’s told you that.”
“He has,” she said sadly. “But you were there. You saw him. I can’t imagine how hard that must have been for you. You and Jenny.”
His eyes unfocused just a bit, clouded with memories.
Pulling open the door to the band’s dressing room, one night on the ’86 tour. To find Jamie kneeling on the ground, snorting lines of coke off his guitar case, just as quickly as the lighting guy from the touring crew could lay them out.
And
Jamie pounding on Ian’s hotel room door at four AM, somewhere in the Midwest. Ian opened the door, startled, and Jamie tumbled in, guffawing, gripping an empty bottle of Jack Daniels, racing across the room to hoist up the window and toss the bottle to the street fifteen stories below. He turned, grinning stupidly, to look at Ian in triumph – and startled a bit to see Jenny in the bed.
“Hey sis,” he slurred. “When did you get here?”
Jenny crossed her arms over her chest, shielding her five-month pregnant belly. “Maybe if you hadn’t had that liquid late-night snack, you’d remember.”
Ian cleared his throat. “Had Jamie not listened to me – to Jenny and me – that morning in Sacramento, and had we boarded the plane to London later that week, he would have come home in a body bag, and where would we be?”
Claire pursed her lips. So many times she had wondered how her life would have been – how Jamie’s life would have been – had he not made that one small choice to finally get the help he needed.
“Claire, I’ve known Jamie since we were seven years old. We grew up together at Lallybroch. I married his sister. He’s my brother. And now you – you’re my sister.”
She blushed, so happy.
“I want only the best for you. For both of you. I’m always here. Jenny is, too – well, even though she’s not here, she’s always going to be here for you. Because that’s what family does for each other.”
Claire’s eyes shone with tears. Heart so full.
Ian smiled, and patted the back of her hand. “Keep that kit out, in case I pop the stitches tonight. Can’t have blood gushing onto my bass in the middle of a song.”
“Hey!”
Colum filled the open door of the dressing room.
“Ian – this is your fifteen minute warning until curtain.”
Ian held up his arm. “I’ve got an excuse.”
Colum winced. “I don’t want to know. I’ll just thank God yet again that we’ve got a bona fide doctor with us this tour. I love Arch Bug, but he didn’t exactly develop a good bedside manor when he was a corpsman in ‘Nam.”
Ian smiled and stood, grabbing the bass that leaned up against the wall. “She’ll be ready if I need more.”
“Speaking of which.” Colum turned to Claire. “Your husband is looking for you.”
Claire snapped her medical bag shut. “Where is he?”
Colum crossed his arms. “Two doors down on the right. But if you’re asking about his headspace right now, it’s getting very close to me asking the opener to play an extra song so that you can do whatever it is you do to calm him down.”
She pursed her lips, and fished in her pocket for a fresh stick of Doublemint. “He’ll be on time.”
to be continued...

Riding the Nightrain.....
youtube
Ok- apologies to John Cusack. But now that you’ve been officially Welcomed to the Jungle let’s stop for a breather. Thank you for joining us for One Week One Band’s celebration of the music of Guns n Roses. When I first pitched GnR to blogmaster-in-chief Hendrik he sent me an intriguing response: “I've always thought that GnR is one of *the* big holes in the site's catalogue, just because there is so much rock and roll mythology tied to this band.” That got me thinking: how to approach a band that is simultaneously so culturally ubiquitous but largely ignored by today’s music tastemakers? So before we dive back into the music, bear with me as I lay out the game plan.
My goal this week is to show that Guns N Roses is so much more then just the hit trifecta that anyone who has ever been in to a professional sports game knows by heart. In fact, let’s just get them out of the way now. Not only is Welcome to the Jungle one of the greatest Side One, Track Ones of all time, its one better: a member of the mythical Side One Track Ones off a debut album club. Sweet Child o’ Mine is the greatest hair metal song of all time, and its not close. And Paradise City has rightly achieved its place alongside We Will Rock You and Seven Nation Army as perennial locker room anthems.
There, I did it. Obviously, no exploration of GnR would be complete without those three songs. But we will speak of them no more- now we can move on to the juicy stuff. This week we’ll go deep into the mythology of Guns N Roses- we’ll study the fascinating personalities that composed the group, and consider the baffling missteps that nearly led to the band’s destruction time and time again. Most of all- we’ll think about how Guns N Roses was a product of rock n roll mythmaking- one of the last superstar bands and a leftover relic from when gods walked the earth.
Special thanks to Hendrik, who knew this was a story that needed telling. I hope everyone at home enjoys, and please feel free to leave feedback, song requests, or suggestions in the comments or write me at my Instagram or personal email. Now, please enjoy one of GNR’s perennial live openers, a song that comes close to encapsulating GNR’s attempts to self- project their exaggerated mythology as a…. well I’m getting ahead of myself.
