The Summerhouse, North Seaton Hall, Northumberland
The Summerhouse, North Seaton Hall, Northumberland
North Seaton Hall stood in the hamlet of the same name, just inland from Newbiggin by the Sea on the Northumberland coast. The house and ancillary buildings were demolished in the 1960s, and the land developed for housing: only the road called ‘Summerhouse Lane’ gives a clue to a fascinating feature which once ornamented the grounds. It is effectively impossible to make up English town names that are goofier than what these people actually call things.

Food and Feet
This was written in 2022 looking back at 2 years of chaotic ministry with Covid-19 being in the foreground and background of everything. In a pioneering context discipleship can be hard to see. Many of the expressions of pioneering are of one person leading something new. Discipleship seems to be something that discussed in church or talked about in youth settings. What does a disciple look…

18th May
Beating the Bounds
Tumblr media
Source: Calendar Customs website
On the Wednesday nearest the 18th May, Newbiggin-by-the-Sea Beats the Bounds. This custom, which allegedly goes back to 1235, involves a walk around the old common on Newbiggin Moor, and the dunting of any new freeholders of the town. This involves taking any such freeholders to the old Dunting Stone, now located on the golf course, where they are bounced on top of it three times by two fellow freeholders working in concert. The ceremony’s origins lie in the importance of clearly marking out the town’s free holding boundaries, as freeholding status was much sought after in medieval Newbiggin as it conferred harbour tolls and land rentals.

8th April 2017 Journal Entry (Journal)
Journal Entry by @warrenwoodhouse #warrenwoodhouse
Today I visited Newbiggin Beach at Newbiggin-by-the-Sea in the North East of England, visited with my mum & dad.
It was 41° F today, which is hot for the North East. I took lots of photos and videos, then we also traveled to North Shields Fish Quays & Market in North Shields, also in the North East of England, today. I took lots of photos in North Shields. The weather was gorgeously warm all day.
This would be the second time I've visited Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, the first time I visited Newbiggin Beach was with North East Autism Society in 2010 and we did kite flying down at the beach.

These are absolutely gorgeous maps designed by artist Stuart Bastik of Art Gene Ltd., an international art and environment project based in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria. Unfortunately, it seems impossible to purchase them individually and I am not going to shell out £26 for the whole set, but I have would love to have the Islands of Barrow map on my wall - it makes a great poster.
The set comprises of:

🏞️ EXPLORING SMARDALE GILL: AN AMAZING VALLEY STROLL
🚶‍♀️ Smardale Gill, an appealing, steep-sided valley, can be accessed on foot from various points. You could, for example, opt for a countryside walk starting from Ravenstonedale village, or track the dismantled railway line from Newbiggin-on-Lune. Both villages are conveniently sited alongside the A685, between Kirkby Stephen and Tebay, ensuring hassle-free accessibility.
🚂 The serpentine Scandal Beck meanders through Smardale Gill, shadowed by the old disused Stainmore Railway that marks its course higher up on the valley's western edge.
🏰 Smardale Gill plays host to a range of attractions. The majestic Smardale Gill Viaduct, fashioned from local stone, proudly showcases its 14 high arches. The 18th-century Smardale Bridge, a curved stone packhorse bridge, shares the area with a prominent old quarry and two fascinating limekilns.
🥾 For those who relish both nature and heritage, Smardale Gill offers an enticing walking experience.
