With its vast ranches or stations, Australia has proved a fertile ground for developing new herders, foremost among them the kelpie and cattle dog, formerly known as various blue and red heelers. New Zealand has produced several remarkable lines of border collie and the huntaway. Well regarded though it is in Australia, where it is notorious for walking across the backs of tightly bunched sheep, and among a small group of fans in the United States, the kelpie is generally rated below the border collie by most American sheepdog fans. It looks more basic, works farther afield, and is more independent, although it too has the "eye," the intense, direct stare that is said to mesmerize sheep. A few border collie aficionados claim the kelpie barks too much while their dogs are always silent. People make many exaggerated claims about dogs; border collies can bark with the best.

@lesliestedeman
"Alright, alright, guys... Let's take a moment... Over here." Leslie wasn't too used to having his two dogs on leashes, but it was better safe than sorry out here in a new environment. Virgil, the collie mix wasn't too excitable these days, but Artemis was younger, a huntaway and he couldn't help think she was looking for sheep to herd. Or maybe just excited to explore.
"Artie, c'mon..." Leslie clicked his tongue and the dogs followed better, out of the way of the boating dock and to the sidewalk. He went to a bench but didn't sit down, instead took a knee, using the bench as an arm rest to steady himself when he wasn't stroking his dog's faces. His Kiwi accent making every word sound gentle and curious.
"Okay, you two. This is a new start for us, okay? I miss everyone, too... Don't worry. You're lovely dogs. You're kind, you're smart, you're hard working. Mum would say you're generous of spirit." Leslie smiled a bit, thinking of his mother and what Ginette Stedeman might think about this tropical island. She was long, long gone. But her kindness, her gentleness lived on in her son. "Well, what's that mean, you're thinking. It means you're very open and giving of yourself. You're not going to have any problems making friends here. I promise you." Leslie spoke these gentle words of encouragement to his pets, but partly to himself as well. The only real friendships, human friendships, he had was with nuns, and the newer ones, who after the initial start of being untrusting of him because he was a cambion, he could usually win over. Artemis licked at Leslie’s hand, then ducked to take a playful lick towards his face, causing him to laugh a little, easing her away.
"Aw, you're a good girl, Artie. Now, the two of your just be your well behaved selves, please. No running off and digging up people's yards. No getting in the way of the foot paths, alright? You're dogs, you don't need them." Leslie was only vaguely firm in these manners before standing up and adjusting his aviator sunglasses. "Bloody Nora, it's hot here..." He took a deep breath and pulled up the handle to his rolling suitcase, everything he possessed now in that. "Well, guys. I guess we'll just have to get used to it. Maybe Virgil, a few new shorter hairstyles for you?" The long haired collie glanced to his master before Leslie started out again toward the main block of buildings. Another deep breath. The salt air smelled different than his New Zealand coast. Maybe he'd visit again someday. But for now, he had to get used to this experience.
"This is home now..."
Wilder heard the accent before he saw who was talking, he had been planning on exploring and had just gotten out of the building when he’d picked up on it and took a quick look around. A man with two dogs and a suitcase looking like he had a few days before. Fresh, and new. He listened to the other man as he talked to his dogs and then walked over with a slight smile. He wasn’t a were, he could tell that, and he’d never seen the other in the pits, watching or fighting, so in his mind, it wouldn’t be dangerous to say hi to a fellow Kiwi. “You fresh in mate?” he asked as he stuck his hand out for the dogs to smell, being a bear, he was occasionally not met fondly by animals, especially dogs, but he loved dogs and he always wanted to try.
“Yeah, this heat’s no joke, makes me wish I brought my jandals, gotta buy some new ones anyways- where you from Bro?” he asked as he looked at the new man. “Don’t reckon I’ve seen you ‘round Wellington at all.”

Invasion
No not the Russians mercifully but a band of 7 roe deer, known as the Gang of Seven who have been patrolling the locale for the last couple of months.  They came into the garden the other night and systematically did over every single rose beyond the line of Holm Oaks, smashed one of the main stems of my beloved Cercidiphyllum japonicum bought at Scampston - a star garden of Piet Oudolf’s and grazed the autumn raspberries.  Most things will come again but there is no doubt when that first growth of the roses is lost, it takes a long while for them to recalibrate. I have tied plastic bags and CDs to all kinds of things to put them off, and hung black bin liners on coat hangers from trees which look like giant humans.  Final deterrent being set up today is the gadget I bought last year (which I was JUST about to set up again) with the sensor, radio and light.  We had no batteries for it hence the delay and of course that “just one more day” proved fatal. Not the last time I am sure.
However in other departments the garden looks good despite the cold nights which seem to have finished for the moment.  Pear blossom is out today, the beautiful Cherry Tai Haku is having its moment of glory despite a strong wind today, and the whites of others such as Amelanchier, Jacquemontii Birch, blackthorn and bullace blossom all contribute to giving the landscape that wonderfully ethereal feel, which coupled with a blue sky is so very special.
Sweet peas are now in thanks to Jane, and Simon finished doing some brush cutting in the wood last week so the bramble blobs are now very clearly defined.  Greenhouse production again is slow due to cold nights but lettuce are finally through, spinach modules filling up, beetroot Pablo not bad - Rainbow Chard has had to have a infil sowing as a lot of blanks.  This weekend I sowed the climbing French beans, and some climbing squash and courgettes. I have bought some timber to make two large trellis arrangements for the latter so as to try and save space as squashes are renowned for travelling over a huge area and even courgettes take up a lot of space.  Having read about this method in Alys Fowler’s new book I thought I would give it a try - they have lovely names - Tromboncino and Zucchetta Tromba d’Albenga and looks decidedly quirky with bent bodies and bulbous ends!
The rape is in full flower so the bees are happy, the two colonies in the little wood are a bit behind but it is noticeably colder in there.  They should soon make up. Life on the common is taking on an air of spring with both swallows safely here, the first sightings of the orange tip butterfly, brimstones everywhere and the glorious sounds of chiff chaff and blackcap.
Away to Devon for three days to hopefully be in attendance for the arrival of Possum’s puppies - Possum who is half cocker half labrador has been mated with a New Zealand Huntaway in the hopes of getting something that will help round up cattle and retrieve an odd pheasant!  I think they will be delightful. The Beck Farm girls are in top form, Inca happy to feel warmth and enjoying lying in the sun, while Mavis and Bertha are much enjoying the training sessions.  We have a fun gang of people here tomorrow followed by lunch. Bertha is coming too and the annoying habits are beginning to abate but she is stubborn and highly intelligent which makes it harder to train as food rewards mean nothing - unlike her dear Mother!
Hoping for a clement Easter and when I return from Devon at the weekend the tulips should be in full swing.  The first Maigold rose flower is out - hurray.

The other dog sitting dogs and the view I've been enjoying!
In addition to their dalmatians they also keep retired working dogs here at the homestead to live out the rest of their days. They are very lucky, so many end up tossed aside after giving everything for their owners during their working life :(

What are the things to look for when buying premium food for dogs?
Do you want to buy a pack of the best premium dog food for your Huntaway? Due to the love, loyalty, and compassion provided, dogs are one of the most adorable pets worldwide. As per the pet association in NZ, more than 70% of NZ households have more than a couple of hounds. Pet adoptions surged in times of the pandemic. Adopting a pet furnishes you with a couple of learning moments.
Pet care means providing care and affection for your pet. As a pet lover, you need to ensure that your pet gets the love it deserves and feeds well. With lots of brands claiming to produce high-grade pet feeds, it becomes hard to decide on one.
As such, finding a
NZ veterans claim that most dogs crave organic meat in their diet and depend on it. It is because their ancestors were found in the wild. It holds regardless of whether you got a new puppy or the pup has been a part of your family for a long time.
We know that you want to give your pet the quality food and nourishment that it deserves. It makes sense to order cheap raw dog food online with ethically sourced ingredients. As you scroll through options at your disposal, check the top checklist of features of commercial dog food.
Organic meat tops the list of dog food ingredients.
Dogs thrive on the protein that comes from organic meat. It is why it's advisable to get rid of fillers like soy or corn. Instead, it should have meat as a primary component that gives maximum nourishment from the pet food.
Start with pet food that has organic meat listed first, and consider the positives of organic meat. If your pet has an allergy, raw dog food is a way to go for. One way you can try out raw dog kibble is by getting it freeze-dried. Likewise, you can go for freeze-dried toppers.
Toppers are a convenient and easy way to add value to the raw dog food diet. Order cheap raw dog food online with organic meat for its growth.
A dog food diet has vegetables and fruits.
Dogs are not perfect carnivores. While meat forms a critical part of your pet's diet, dogs can gain from a balanced diet with a considerable portion of fruits, grains, vegetables, and more.
Look for responsible sourcing of ingredients.
Just like any food ingredient, all proteins don't get designed to be equal. It is better to look for brands that contain cage-free, grass-fed, and other ethically sourced meat. It doesn't only offer nutritional values, but also is more eco-friendly. Food for Puppies New Zealand contains ethically sourced ingredients.
It meets the dietary needs of your pet.
Every pet has a different requirement. So, there is no one-size-fits-all dog food available.
Do you want to learn about factors that affect the health conditions of your pet?
It includes breed, age, health conditions like stomach sensitives or allergies. Based on the breed and age of your pup, choose Food for Puppies New Zealand.
From next time you buy a bag of dog food, follow our guide.

Lily was taking a walk along the shore, taking in the air as summer was just around the corner. She was excited for the end of the school year, she already had a few idea of what she wanted to do for the summer. She buzzed with excitement, making the wind around her dance when she noticed two dogs.
She loved dogs, while she had a small army of kittens she still held dogs close to her heart. She only noticed the man once he spoke again, and she quickly made her way over to him. “Hello there. I see that you are new here. Welcome, and who are these adorable little companions?” She grinned.
.
Tumblr media
“Thank you! I’m Leslie,” The man held out his hand for her to shake, maybe a bit old fashion, but so was he. The dogs were already rather taken with the new person, not used to the smell of witch but very familiar with ladies. Or perhaps the smell of a witch was more enticing.
“The collie mix here is Virgil, named after the great poet, of course. And that’s Artemis, she’s a huntaway, so naturally I named her for the goddess of the hunt. I’ll be teaching folklore when the new semester starts.” Leslie sounded cheerful but a little bit nervous all the same. It was nice to be greeted by someone right off the boat. Perhaps that was her job, but he didn’t wish to presume.
“Are you the welcoming committee? I don’t need help with bags or anything, I’ve just got the one.” Leslie patted his rolling suitcase, with a airline tag stating he’d come from New Zealand if the accent wasn’t a give away.
