The recipient of the #neoresidency 2020 Award is Lauren Curl @lauren.curl Artist Statement: I create compositions which evolve from ‘found collages’ from urban environments which illuminate and bearing witness to traces of human activity. My most recent body of work takes its origin from layers of torn billboard posters, revealing dada poems of today’s consumer society which invite the viewer, as if cloud watching, to bring their own narrative to the work. Incidental marks and fragments of graphic shapes float across areas of chaotic texture juxtaposed by flat planes of vibrant colours and are united to form unique arrangements of familiar pieces. Working predominantly with #photography and #screenprinting, these abstract works are further embellished with physical surface textures, evoking a sense of touch. I achieve highly tactile surfaces of my prints by using laser engraving and embossment. I am especially interested in exploring how three-dimensional surface textures are transformed into a two- dimensional print, and in turn how we translate and interpret this visual experience through our tactile sensory perception, enhanced by these relief surfaces. As the physical surface has become a focus of the work, printing on wood has enabled me to transform pieces into solid sculptural shapes. Protruding corners curate how we look at the work, inviting the audience to get up close and investigate the surface of the prints, inspiring an actual tactile experience. Returning the work to its origin, on commercially printed billboards, has given my work a new dimension and raises themes about who the dominant story-tellers are in our society today. [working title] @corinnadschoto Preview: Saturday, 24th November 2018 from 2.00pm - 6.00pm #neostudios is delighted to announce: [working title], a solo exhibition by Corinna D’Schoto, the 2018 three month neo:artist-in-residence. Corinna D’Schoto [b. 1987, USA] works predominantly in painting, sculpture & installation. D’Schoto is interested in the physicality of painting and the after-life of image. In her work she often explores ways to reinterpret and redefine spaces that can be both familiar and alien. D’Schoto received her BFA in 2013 in Sculpture and Painting from Massachusetts College of Art and Design, her MFA in 2018 from @glasgowschoolart. In [working title] #workingtitle D’Schoto plays with the object-hood of painting, through exploring and expanding flat systems and structures used to represent images, bodies, spaces, and ideas- and how these representations both inform and form identity and place. Her work plays with the distortion and disorientation that occur when pulling these things apart; pushing perspective shifts in relation to the body and to the object. These shifts call into question the navigated experience of memory and the (re)interpretation of form and space. D’Schoto uses color and form to simplify, abstract, and highlight these relationships within a contained space.
