I'm Unpeeling Myself from Big Tech!
"Unpeeling" being any act you take that limits the amount of data a large tech corporation can gather from you, decreases your reliance on products of those corporations, or increases autonomy over your technology. I'm ripping the term from a line in this review by Joanna Nelius, where she writes, "People are looking for ways to peel their eyes from their smartphones like a layer of Elmer’s glue from their hand — to remove a part of themselves that really isn’t a part of themselves." It's different than "unplugging" because the goal isn't to go off the grid, or even to limit one's technology usage. The goal, instead, is to extract from the invasive, addictive, destructive capitalist vision a set of tools that are useful to YOU.
It started when I realized I don't need a smartphone. I've deleted most social media from my phone, and the stuff I still have I prefer to check on my laptop. Not all "dumb phones" (I hate this term) offer the same features, though, so I began to think on a granular level about what I need from a cell phone. Eg, not all "dumb phones" provide MMS, but my family lives 3k miles away. I wanna still talk in the groupchat.
On the more complex end, I write on my phone. I've been using Google Docs to move seamlessly from scribbled writing drafts on my phone to formatted, finished works on my computer since I was fourteen.
Except, Google Docs is useless now. I've been unable to use it since they lowered the storage capacity. The only other cloud storage writing thingy with similar functionality is Office 365, which sucks.
Could a dumb phone with a basic "notes" feature work? Maybe, but I'd have to re-type everything to get it into a formatted document. Ideally, I'd have like, a mini-laptop just for writing - something I could fit in my pocket or in a small bag, so I could bring it to work without looking like a dick - and then, in addition, a basic phone for calls/texts/GPS stuff. But does a device this specific to my use case even exist?
Yes. Yes it does.
This is a GPD Micro PC. GPD mainly sells handheld gaming machines, though this product is designed for mobile IT professionals. It's probably too chonky for a pocket, but mark my words, I will figure out how to make it work for me.
It's stupid, but this gave me a rush. I've been struggling along, tied to the bloated corpses of three gmail accounts, for years, because I needed Google Docs for my writing workflow. But now I don't. I have the power to actually tailor my tech for my life.
By this point, I was like, alright, I don't need Google Docs anymore, I don't need a smartphone, what else? Do I need Windows? No, probably not, right? I can use Linux Mint on this new guy, especially since he'll mostly be a basic writing machine. LibreOffice is less intrusive and bloated than MS Word - a better experience for free than I'd have from the paid program. If I go all the way and install Linux, I also won't have to deal with ads in my start menu, or pre-installed spyware screenshotting my activities.
In fact, if I back everything up on an external drive, I can delete my old Google Drives and switch my main computer to Linux, too! So, I finally bit the bullet and invested in an external hard drive.
This is the problem with "product ecosystems," by the way. When one part of that ecosystem - Google Docs - fails, the whole thing collapses. All the bloat and corruption you dealt with just stops being worth it, and it's easier to make a radical change to a new system. I witnessed something similar happen with comedy tech youtuber Dankpods earlier this year, except with Apple's ecosystem: he was a lifetime Apple guy - seemingly not in a worship way, but he liked their products, and was certainly in Apple's ecosystem. Then a couple things went sour for him, and now he runs Linux.
I'm doing this for personal and ideological reasons. I'm personally sick of Clippy - I mean, Copilot - peeping in to tell me how to write what I'm writing on Office 365. I abhor the idea of paying Google for a service they offered for free until recently, knowing they can flip the script at any point. And while we're talking ideology, I'm a communist, and even though this is far from a shift everyone can make, I believe that taking any available steps towards shutting Big Tech out of our lives is a net good. If all you can do is delete Instagram, or use a screentime tracker, or switch to Firefox, do it. I'm finally in a position to make this more drastic change, and I'm excited.
Get in the weeds about how you use technology. Do you need everything at your fingertips, all the time? If not, what, specifically, do you need? Is there a way that you, now or in the future, can trim out the parts you dislike? And what can you change now?

Hey anon. I don't want to be a jerk but please improve your writing expression. Reading this gave me a headache.
Anyway, let's get into it.
doesn't ron always start first whenever draco comes? isnt dracos focus only on harry n draco only focus on ron if he started on draco
Nope. I love Draco but I can't excuse his sins. While I believe Hermione and Harry are not as victimized by Draco as fandom claims, I can't say the same for Ron. I am struggling to think of a time when Ron attacked Draco first unprovoked, except for the scene in DH where Ron punched a defenceless Draco.
If you want, here are some examples of Draco provoking Ron and not (solely) focusing on Harry:
Book 5, Ch 21
“I’m surprised so many people could see them,” said Ron. “Three in a class —” “Yeah, Weasley, we were just wondering,” said a malicious voice nearby. Unheard by any of them in the muffling snow, Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle were walking along right behind them. “D’you reckon if you saw someone snuff it you’d be able to see the Quaffle better?” He, Crabbe, and Goyle roared with laughter as they pushed past on their way to the castle and then broke into a chorus of “Weasley Is Our King.” Ron’s ears turned scarlet.
Book 4, Ch 11
“We saw him right up close, as well,” said Ron. “We were in the Top Box —” “For the first and last time in your life, Weasley.” Draco Malfoy had appeared in the doorway. Behind him stood Crabbe and Goyle, his enormous, thuggish cronies, both of whom appeared to have grown at least a foot during the summer. Evi- dently they had overheard the conversation through the compart- ment door, which Dean and Seamus had left ajar. “Don’t remember asking you to join us, Malfoy,” said Harry coolly. “Weasley . . . what is that?” said Malfoy, pointing at Pigwid- geon’s cage. A sleeve of Ron’s dress robes was dangling from it, swaying with the motion of the train, the moldy lace cuff very obvious. Ron made to stuff the robes out of sight, but Malfoy was too quick for him; he seized the sleeve and pulled. “Look at this!” said Malfoy in ecstasy, holding up Ron’s robes and showing Crabbe and Goyle, “Weasley, you weren’t thinking of wearing these, were you? I mean — they were very fashionable in about eighteen ninety. . . .” “Eat dung, Malfoy!” said Ron, the same color as the dress robes as he snatched them back out of Malfoy’s grip. Malfoy howled with derisive laughter; Crabbe and Goyle guffawed stupidly. “So . . . going to enter, Weasley? Going to try and bring a bit of glory to the family name? There’s money involved as well, you know . . . you’d be able to afford some decent robes if you won. . . .” “What are you talking about?” snapped Ron. “Are you going to enter?” Malfoy repeated. “I suppose you will, Potter? You never miss a chance to show off, do you?” “Either explain what you’re on about or go away, Malfoy,” said Hermione testily, over the top of The Standard Book of Spells, Grade 4. A gleeful smile spread across Malfoy’s pale face. “Don’t tell me you don’t know?” he said delightedly. “You’ve got a father and brother at the Ministry and you don’t even know? My God, my father told me about it ages ago . . . heard it from Cor- nelius Fudge. But then, Father’s always associated with the top people at the Ministry. . . . Maybe your father’s too junior to know about it, Weasley . . . yes . . . they probably don’t talk about impor- tant stuff in front of him. . . .” Laughing once more, Malfoy beckoned to Crabbe and Goyle, and the three of them disappeared. Ron got to his feet and slammed the sliding compartment door so hard behind them that the glass shattered.
For all Draco is obsessed with Harry, there are several times where he ignores Harry and focuses on making Ron miserable.
also i saw ur answer to anons ask about ron deserving better n reblog about percy i also dont get how ron deserves better if compared to better friends
I literally don't understand what you are saying.
maybe he does but overall ron is bad too lyk w how he treats percy despite percy caring for him the most, displays bout of jealousies n belittles others n hypocritical w muggles n pure blood beliefs
I never said Ron was not flawed. Yes, Ron treats Percy badly and he has moments of ugly jealousy. But it does not lessen my opinion that Ron is a better friend to Hermione and Harry than they are to him. I wish he had another love interest and another best friend. To me, Ron is the most lovable of the three. He's also pretty relatable to me. Not sure how Ron is hypocritical about muggles?? Yeah, the Weasleys have their own prejudices, such as their scorn for squibs but Arthur is the main culprit for treating muggles like zoo animals, not Ron. Ron does not hold any major bigoted pureblood beliefs that I can recall.
I like Ron a lot, he's my favourite of the trio. And I doubt anything will change that.

(Note: please read the thing on bottom that I said about swears and how I censor them)
Me: okay, so Sariel, if you had to choose, would you rather eat only one thing for a whole year, or would you rather only eat a least favorite food you have? Just a random question that I like to ask all of my new friends
(Meanwhile)
Barrage: you too, that's what friends do after all *smiles and walks away* *grabs the photo album and starts flipping through it* heh, I guess my dad was the target of Halloween jumpscares *flips the page again* *giggles* I guess my dad was responsible for all those vandal art signs in the locker rooms *flips to the last page because it was next* heh, I guess my mom's three best friends loved wearing matching shirts, *thinks out loud* hmm, may looks alot like one of the principals Miss Nelius to be exact *looks at the last person* *shocked facial expression* oh...my...god...SILVER RED USED TO BE THEIR FRIEND?!?!?! HOLY SH_T!!!! 🤯 Just as I thought I solved the mystery of my family's lives another one unfolds?! If they were really good friends why would silver red kill them?! And his names Jackson?! 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 holy meatballs...🤯🤯
(Note: ANY SWEARS THAT ARE INTENDED TO BE PUT IN THE ASK IS CENSORED BY SYMBOLS SUCH AS AN UNDERSCORE OR OTHER THINGS TO KEEP IT KID/CHILD FRIENDLY!!!!)
Thanks for keeping swears child friendly! While I sometimes do discuss darker topics, such as character deaths, I generally like my blog being fine for Mysticons' target audience, so that helps a lot!
SARIEL: I would probably eat only one thing for a whole year, unless the time I have to eat my least favourite food is less than a day.
(Note, as you walked away, Quasarla wouldn't hear. However, if she did, she would comment on why Jackson betrayed them, knowing that Proxima's experience suggests that people sometimes turn evil due to heartbreak or other difficult emotions)

Was reading a review of a "dumb phone" by Joanna Nelius on the verge, and I really liked this line: "People are looking for ways to peel their eyes from their smartphones like a layer of Elmer’s glue from their hand — to remove a part of themselves that really isn’t a part of themselves."
just, such a great sensory metaphor. i think also of the splitting, cracking noise when you pick a googly eye off of what it's glued to, and of the particular lightness i feel when i leave home without my phone on me.
#my one thing is i want to not be Tracked by a tech company#but i rely on google maps to get around :'(#dumb phone#dumb phones

Samsung’s gorgeous Galaxy Book4 Edge has fallen to its lowest price to date
Samsung’s Galaxy Book4 Edge offer a vibrant OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. | Photo: Joanna Nelius / The Verge The portability of a laptop is nice and all, but oftentimes, the tradeoff is a smaller screen that can feel cramped if you’ve got a lot of tabs open. Thankfully, there are laptops like Samsung’s Galaxy Book4 Edge, which offers a 16-inch display in a thin and lightweight package.…
