nct is a south korean boy band group formed by sm entertainment. created in 2016, the group has 26 members each divided into different units. the units include fixed and rotational subunits. these units include the rotational nct u, and the fixed units nct 127, nct dream, wayv, nct wish, and nct dojaejung. the beginning of nct started when they debuted their first rotational unit with the single “the 7th sense”. members featured on this song include the talented vocalist doyoung, expert leader and rapper taeyong, jaehyun who lived in america for 4 years that’s why he’s here man, the all rounder and ace mark lee, and the probably gayest man alive (if not rivaled by xiao dejun) ten. known for their experimental techniques in music, nct made headlines in the music industry. not only is their vocal line up talented, but their rapping and dance skills are a force to be reckoned with. these features have made nct one of the best selling kpop groups of all times. nct is also known for their approach to different overseas countries as they have debuted 2 overseas units wayv and nct wish. however tensions with china have caused sm entertainment to neglect wayv as seen with the prolonged hiatus of lucas and the unfair line distribution of certain members. sm entertainment has been called out for this behavior but at least they don’t have ceos feuding with one another in a public legal battle.

Almost all the members of NCT Dream had graduated. Only Jisung was left, and new members who were Jisung's age and joined after Y/N's exit.

It was time for the other members of Dream to graduate. Except the original seven Dream members had a surprise. So did one more person.

After Dreams graduation concert, a video began to play. "Graduation" also began to play, the audience tearing up when they saw all the original Dream members show up on screen.

"Hey guys." The audience quietened down. Y/N's face appeared. He'd grown up. His face had matured, but he still had that child like demeanor. "I'm back. Permanently, returning to 8Dream."

The audience went ballistic, chanting Y/N's name as eight blocks rose from below the stage to greet the original Dream members.

"We're coming back with our new album, Hello Future, this May." Mark announced. "The return of NCT Dream."

The 127 members have an extremely strong bond, that's obvious. They care about each other very much. However, NCT Dream seem to be the closest in the sense of hanging out and keeping in touch with one another. 127 are siblings; the Dreamies are besties.

SM Rookies

I've watched a lot of NCT content (mostly 127 related), more than most fans, but there are still gaps. I'm not a geek type of a person, I don't need to know absolutely everything about something I enjoy. I covered the basics (all MVs, all albums, the beginning, the pre-debut info, etc) and left the rest to "when I have time and mood".

As 127 slowed down with their content releases, the last unit was formed to wrap up the NCT project, and the military era is upon us, now I have the motivation to catch up with the past.

I generally know SMRookie era, but I haven't watched the programmes (Rookies and EXO, Disney Micky Mouse club). I'll start with a recap. (There are fandom Wiki-s, so google for more details yourself)

SMRookies. The idea was launched in 2013. And it was still kind of alive during the introduction of new neos. Shotaro and Sungchan were promoted in the same manner (promotion without being in a fixed unit), and NCT Wish went though the preparatory period like old neos did with SM Rookies Show (small venue concerts around Japan with song covers to practice working on the stage and gather first supporters).

In a sense. The Rookies system is like SM's own idol survival show. K-pop fans get to know the trainees, watch them perform, but the debut of the participants isn't guaranteed. The system is probably obsolete by now. The field of k-pop and promotional tactics have changed. NCT Wish might be the last who participated in it. The new gg which should debut in 2024 will show.

Rookies were introduced in groups over a few years.

2013

December 2nd, SM announced Seulgi, Taeyong, Jeno. 

December 9th - Irene, Jaehyun, and Lami.

December 16th - Hansol, Mark, and Jisung.

December 23th - Johnny, Yuta, and Ten.

Lami and Hansol didn't make it as idols. Lami started as a child actress and is now also listed as an actress signed to SM. Hansol left SM, debuted with Newkidd, he finished the military and is now teaching dance in Australia. He says he will comeback to Korea, he is on a break (Newkidd has been on a prolonged hiatus, Hansol clings to his dream, but I doubt anything will pan out in the future).

Hansol's case was always curious to me. He was a part of the A-team and SM Rookies, i.e. he was chosen by SM, and yet he is the only one who didn't end up in NCT. I think Shohei will repeat his fate. Other neos greet him on music award shows, but can't talk about him in NCT content and lives. He was erased.

Why he never made it? He wasn't the best of the best. He was only a dancer, he was tall and handsome, but there were no spots left for him in 127. And he couldn't debut with WayV as a Korean after the Chinese ban on Korean celebreties performing in the country. Johnny had English and ties to US, Yuta had ties to Japan, Jungwoo could sing and was more charming, Sungchan (very much the same idol type, I think) was younger.

Still, was it a problem to add him to 127 together with JohnDo? He wasn't popular enough? SM didn't see a potential after a trial period? He was liked by everyone, it's hard to imagine there being a conflict with other neos.

Frankly, watching the content with him, I don't think NCT lost anything. He doesn't have the spark. Evenso, it is still a lesson of how unpredictable the path to success can be.

The Rookies introduced in 2013 (only the hyung line) + Taeil + Yong Ju performed on SMTown week show (Hansol in red). Another performance.

Yong Ju left on his own very soon. He wasn't interested in NCT concept. Never became an official Rookie.

The difference between Taeil's and Doyoung's first stages is also interesting to me. Both are the "glee club boys", who joined an idol agency to be able to sing, who always were rivals during trainee days as top vocalists. However, Doyoung joined later (wasn't ready for SMTown), was kept hidden, and was introduced as an MC. Different set of talents, different time, different approach at promotion. (Do came in with the experience of student body vice-president and all his talkative skills).

2014

July 17 - Donghyuk (later Haechan)

The officially introduced Rookie batch was promoted here and there. A site was launched, Rookies did short YT introductory videos. Solo performances were uploaded as well. (you can find them all on SM main YT channel)

"TY track" Tae's moniker is thanks to his feature in an earlier Red Velvet song. As you see, RV and NCT were sister/brother group originally (it's more of aespa/NCT now, lol). The connection allowed for stages like Tae+Seulgi.

Most importantly, the lore of NCT began with Taeyong's "Open the door" on July 21st.

2015

Instantly after introduction Do joined Jae for ShowChamp as MC for half a year.

Same as Taeil, Jaemin performed on SMRookies events prior to being officially announced as a Rookie. Taeil was removed from dances pretty early. The routines became difficult, the special videos showcased the dance line only. Kun's introducation (and his participation in Without U, Chinese version) meant LSM was serious about launching a Chinese and a Japanese unit soon after 127.

The girls participated in Micky Mouse club together with Dreamies, but none of them debuted with SM (Herin left early, but, it seems, Koeun and Hina waited for aespa, but weren't selected).

Koeun played alongside Jungwoo in Yesung's "Paper Umbrella" MV.

More of dance videos uploaded on YT. Ten&Jaehyun played in the Hope Basketball All-Star basketball games and Yuta replaced Minho at MBC Idol Star Games (football).

In August - first Rookies Shows. Every boy who had been introduced so far. + Taeil. Lol, they just forgot they hadn't officially debuted him and remembered postfactum. Does the ceremony have anything to do with contracts?

Here is where the first divide lies. Chenle, Renjun, WinWin are yet to join SM. Kun didn't participate. It's why Renjun wasn't close to Doyoung before NCT2020, why Ten is close to 127.

SMRookies show gave us Tende unit and the song "Timeless", as well as the TaeDo single (written by Tae) that later was released as "Lightbulb" in 2020 with additional neos on the track. If you ever wondered why in Japan Johnny gets birthday cakes in the form of a fish, it's because of "Under the sea".

2016

January 5th - WinWin

September 19th - Yiyang and Ningning

The first NCT lore videos (Origin, Synchronization of your dreams, 7th sense) were released Jan-Feb. Taeil released his famous "apada gwenchana" OST.

LSM really wanted a member to pull in Chinese audience, heh. WW got in SM late and was inserted in all promo material right away. Yiyang left SM and is in a Chinese idol group now.

Yuta participated in another football game. And got a magazine feature in April.

Ten wasn't forgotten. Thai magazine (scans and translation).

SMRookies finished last SMRookie shows in Thailand in February. SM was gearing up for NCT unit debuts in Spring and Summer.

Johnny played a DG set October 2016. By then he was already part of 127 (not officially). I'm making a point out of Yuta and Johnny's promotions because the fandom likes to say they never got anything.

Lucas, Jungwoo, Xiaojun, YangYang, Hendery, Seunghan, Eunseuk, Shohei. I think Sungchan and Shotaro skipped the phase as they debuted as part of NCT without prior introduction. Same as Chenle and Renjun.

So, to sum it up.

Practically all Rookie boys debuted. Didn't make it: Hansol, Shohei. Lucas and Seunghan debuted but were lost due to scandals. Shotaro and Sungchan relocated not just to another unit, but to another group.

The official NCT lore lost 4 dreamers (italics). This story isn't without its victims.

Half of the girls didn't make it. aespa has only 4 members afterall, heh. (seems like the new gg will have 8-9)

i was not always into them and it did not happen gradually either JKDSNGJHB when it clicks for me and i get into a group i usually go head first and start watching everything and learning all about them, which is why it might seem like i've been around longer than i have lol. but i only started getting into them in october ! for me it started with dojaejung so naturally i also gravitated to 127, but i'd say my favorite fixed unit is wayv (then djj, then 127). i usually like dream's music, but haven't gotten into their content since i haven't had a bias jump out at me like jaehyun and dejun did for the other units ٩(◕‿◕)۶

no like i can't let it go, i'm still so upset :( long rant about sungtaro/nct/sm ahead

i mean we always knew that sm is terrible at managing their groups but experiencing it in real time as a (relatively) new kpop fan is infuriating... i only got into kpop/nct in mid 2021 so i didn't experience the peak of 3rd gen but from what i hear exo was dominating back then, like especially watching the pre-covid mama clips it's kinda crazy! obviously they're still crazy popular now but if you look at the impact on the current kpop scene they're not really there anymore and i get that has to do with the members enlisting too but i've seen plenty of exols (and fans of any other sm group) talk about how sm will abandon older groups in favour of the shiny new thing. for exo it was nct but now it seems they're doing it to nct in favour of the new non nct boy group that sungtaro + the rookies are supposed to be a part of. i get that they're trying to keep up with current kpop trends and probably want to compete with all the other new bgs but i really feel like they're cutting the nct concept short for no reason. if nct isn't as big as they had hoped it's bc they're mismanaging them!! if they spaced them out correctly i really feel like they could have easily debuted the japanese nct unit plus another korean nct unit, since that's what they seem to be going for with the new one, and i really think they could hold their own within the current 4th gen/upcoming 5th gen climate. obviously i'm gonna be biased as an nctzen but it really doesn't take much thinking to see they're underutilising the fuck out of the nct concept and now they're punishing the members and the fans as a result...

and ig they're hoping to have a good chunk of nctzens follow sungtaro to the new group but it's really not fair to us or them. if they're going out of their way to separate the new group from nct so much doesn't it defeat the purpose to drag nctzens with them into the new group?? like i'll definitely support them bc i've grown attached to them now but it feels like it's gonna be infintely harder now to establish them as their own separate group with their own disdinct voice as they will always have nct's shadow looming over them now, so i feel like a lot of us will just see them as an unofficial nct unit regardless...

this whole thing is fucked but i think what's especially cruel is shotaro got into sm FOR nct and they made his dream come true only to let him waste away for a few years and then rip it away from him again? like that's fucked... also sungchan gets on so well with all of them, i always look forward to him and jungwoo interacting!! like he trained with so many of them, the rookies too, it just feels so cruel for no reason. but ig now we can only hope for the yearly sm town interactions... :(

another thing i've noticed is the fandom's unanimous reaction to this news being very negative. i feel like with the lucas situation the fandom kind of split in half but it seems everyone is unhappy with this. the only remotely positive reaction i've seen is ppl saying they're happy sungtaro will actually finally have a fixed group and will actually get to be proper idols. i really wonder what k- and j-fans reaction to this is but i can't imagine they're very happy either

considering that sm was actively making merch with sungtaro's likness for nct home, ccomaz and the sanrio collab up until recently this definitely feels like a rushed decision. or maybe not rushed but this didn't seem to be a part of their long term plans until very recently, like welcome to nct universe just happened!! ig most likely shohei's injury unexpectedly set their plans back and i'm guessing sungtaro and the rookies were given the choice of delaying their debut within nct or this. and obviously we can't know but if that is what they chose i can't fault them for it. as much as we like to make the unemployment jokes, i'm sure it hasn't been fun for them, like universe was the last nct album and that was in 2021! and sungchan didn't even appear in a music video for it!! considering maw and 90s love are 2 of nct's best performing songs ever, it seems stupid even just on a purely monetary level to not do anything with them. so as much as this sucks i am really happy for them that they'll get to have a proper group now.

i really wonder about the rest of nct too, like seeing yuta's reaction today i can't imagine they got much of a heads up about this or that they wanted this either. first off, i want to sit down with yuta and shit talk sm so bad asdfshjfsdjds like you can tell that man is fed up! and rightfully so!!! considering we're coming up to contract renewal season it makes me wonder who in nct will leave... i feel like i can't see anyone in dream leaving (for now) but in 127 yuta and taeil have been pretty vocal about their discontent. taeil not getting a solo when he's now at risk of getting shipped off to the military at any point feels disrespectful, ik he's spoken about being unhappy about not having anything to do. i was also watching some of the 2 baddies promotional stuff back and you can definitely tell he was not having it back then. he seemed so unhappy and disinterested and who can blame him when he gets a miniscule amount of screentime? considering they gave him so much more screentime in ay-yo i feel like he must've had a big talk with someone behind the scenes and good for him!! i just hope that this continues and isn’t just a temporary change to appease him. and i rly feel like yuta could probably write a book on the ways sm constantly mistreats him, so it wouldn't shock me if either of them were to leave at some point. winwin is another candidate imo, he's so distant and elusive lol like he's building a pretty solid career for himself in china but he keeps making appearances with wayv every now and again so i really can't tell. nct def seems to be his sidegig tho and not the other way around, so i also wouldn't be shocked if he eventually dips. sm is rly fumbling the bag, like how is the supposedly limitless group losing members at such a high rate... sigh

ALSO apparently the new nct japan unit will be formed through a survival show... yuck 😬 sm has always historically stayed away from that, so i wonder if the new management changes and sm 3.0 have anything to do with that. regardless, i won't watch it ESPECIALLY if there are minors involved. i thought they learned their lesson after all the nct dream shit when aespa debuted with all of them being 18 and over and the rookies too. i'm really hoping they're not gonna regress into old habits... also from what i’ve seen from any other survival show, it never feels very fun or fair to the participating trainees, like i never watched stray kids’ survival show bc my heart hurt for them. i also really don't think that a survival show fits into nct's concept like AT ALL, especially at this stage of their career with 3 established units that all came together without a survival show. i feel like if they really wanted to go down that path they should've made that the concept for the non nct bg, that way they would also feel distinctly different from nct, but ig not 🙄

ofc i'll support sungtaro wherever they go but i wonder if we can bully sm into putting them back like dreamzens did for dream's graduation system, like just make the new bg be another nct unit and literally everyone will be happier for it!! ig it will probably have to come from k-czennies since they never care what us i-fans have to say lol but if there is a boycott i'll do it!!

i think i know whopping total of 3 nct songs between all these groups (including 7th sense!! i do actually know that one lmao) so maybe ill actually take a look at more of their music! the funniest part is that i know of the 2 baddies song (thats a new one i think??) but i actually have no idea what its supposed to sound like and only know the tune because hyunjin sang it in that one skz code episode (whoops)

Alright, I've decided to finally post about K-pop, and we're starting with NCT. A few weeks ago (about may 24th), SM announced that

• Sungchan and Shotaro are no longer a part of NCT

• They, along with two of the current S.M.Rookies and at least one other idol, will debut as SMs new boy group in a few months

• Only two S.M.Rookies will debut in NCT Japan

• SM is gonna team up with a Japanese agency to find more Japanese idols for the new unit

And I have been thinking about this choice ever since, and trying to figure out why it bothered me so much, and a few days ago I figured it out.

It's the lack of continuity between NCT and the new subunit.

NCT debuted in spring of 2016 and put out two NCT U songs, and four members from those two songs (Taeyoung, Mark, Taeil, and Jaehyun) debuted as the subunit NCT 127 along with three new members (Winwin, Yuta, and Haechan). A few momths or two later NCT Dream debuted as the NCT Maknae line, including Mark and Haechan, the two youngest of 127.

Then after debuting more members w/o fixed subunits, they took four members (Ten, Winwin, Lucas, and Kun) and debuted WayV with three new members (Hendery, Xiaojun, and Yangyang).

Each fixed subunit debuted with a few established NCT memebers, but the Japanese subunit won't have that. They'll have two rookies who have interacted with NCT but unless Yuta is moved to the new subunit, NCT Japan won't have an established connection with the rest of the group, and I don't think that'll be good, especially where they'll be based out of Japan so they're gonna be isolated from the main group.

Now, what really boggles my mind here is that SM is keeping Sungchan and Shotaro but will have them redebut as a completely new boy group. It just doesn't make sense to take the two unit-less members out of the group right before they get their own subunit.

And then they're debuting a brand new boy group with those two members at the same time, before NCT has officially finished its expansion. SM should just debut two new NCT subunits this year if that's what they're doing instead of stealing NCT members. Don't get me wrong, I love it for Sungchan and Shotaro that they'll have their own group and get the attention they deserve, but I think that could've happened with them staying in NCT, and from an NCT concept and continuity perspective it doesn't make sense to take them just before they get their subunit.

It's not that DY needs to be in the main unit to be more popular but the unit needs popular, capable and attractive mems like DY. 1

Only stans like to think only the "pushed" one benefits from the push but never read the cmt in the cut from DY's appearance on MITH where many asked for the info of the group. Sadly it seems too late to fix the fandom, I remember when I was impressed by Shotaro in MAW perf and learned abt NCT, the fandom in early 2021 was much more supportive of solo gigs, the fans joins the hashtag events for Midnight Cafe ost back then, nowadays I hardly see the equal support from non-DY biased. 2

It's funny to see ppl want to change the established line up, ppl who declare they hate the group but go mad when their bias is not in the main unit and ppl who want to replace a main vocal with a rapper/dancer/not as capable vocal. Not to mention things like "SM did NOTHING for my bias". Be serious. Anyway, none ruins this comeback for me as a DoTenMark bias. Hope DoTen interact more than 1 sec in the BTS. And pray for DoJae soul partner. 3

Let's start with SM not charging their trainees to pay them for education and not making them go into debt.

Did SM use WinWin to appeal to Chinese market? Yes. Did WinWin benefit from working in Korea and fulfilling his dream of being an actor? Yes. Did other 127 members hard-carried WinWin during his stay, contributing to his success by building the popularity of the group and promoting him with all the shipping and "everyone likes WW"? Yes.

The math is complicated, I know.

The NCT system is confusing, I don't blame you. They have:

NCT 127 - fixed unit, more hard-hitting songs, lineup doesn't change (Taeyong, Johnny, Taeil, Yuta, Doyoung, Jaehyun, Jungwoo, Mark, Haechan)

NCT Dream - used to be rotational but is now fixed, more upbeat, fresh music (Mark, Haechan, Renjun, Jaemin, Jeno, Chenle, Jisung)

WayV - fixed Chinese-focused unit (Kun, Ten, Winwin, Xiaojun, Hendery, Lucas (he may or may not come back) and Yangyang).

NCT DoJaeJung who just debuted last week as a fixed trio. Doyoung, Jaehyun and Jungwoo. Doyoung and Jaehyun and main vocalists in NCT 127 and Jungwoo is also a vocal, so the unit tends to focus more on music that emphasises vocals, like RnB and ballads. I suspect that Taeil would have normally also been included in this unit as he's another main vocalist, however he was born in '94 and will be enlisting for military service this year so maybe this is why he was left out.

Then we have NCT U. That is a project, not necessarily a unit. They decide on a concept, and then pull in the members who fit that concept. There's no set number of members when there's an NCT U project. The lowest was two, when Taeyong and Ten did "Baby Don't Stop".

There are several new NCT members who do not belong to any fixed unit yet, however, SM Entertainment announced that there will be one more NCT unit coming out this year, NCT Tokyo, and after it there will be no more new NCT members.

The members who don't have a unit yet are Shotaro, Sungchan, Shohei, Eunseok and Seunghan. Shotaro and Sungchan have been around longer and they've participated in an NCT U project, but the other three haven't participated in any comeback yet. Shotaro and Shohei are Japanese, so they will almost certainly be part of NCT Tokyo. As all other units are fixed, it is safe to assume that most if not all the newest members will become part of that unit.

And as for the Saturn energy, yeah I feel like I do lol. The only Capricorn I have in my chart are my Uranus (8th house) and Neptune (9th house).
