Finally writing about a very scary swim I had 2 weeks ago. If you have a fear of the water - or you're my mom - please don't read this. I'm okay now:)

Winter₂

This week: periods, seaweed, and my love/hate relationship with Margate.

The sauna is an old horsebox trailer with a woodburner inside. It’s painted a tasteful grey outside. It’s a self-proclaimed community project managed by a boutique beauty bar that sells £18 packets of dehydrated seaweed for your bath. Presumably this is the same squishy stuff I squelch through on my way into Walpole Bay tidal pool. So far, so Margate.

Lake Land

The second beaver moves silently across the lake, creating a hush on the dock. We stop passing the towel around and stand dripping on the wooden boards. Watching. Again, the camera is slowly drawn from its case; again, the beaver’s low dark form eludes the auto-focus. It swims efficiently. We don’t have to wait long until its diagonal path reaches the thick rim of reeds on the opposite bank.

The sky, the dismal grey sky I dismissed when on land, looks luminous from the cold water. I try to point out the pearling pinks on the horizon and the patches thinning to gold above our heads. The sun is so much more present than we thought! (more…)

Worst winter swim

I’ve just finished my first winter of sea swimming. I’ve written about my best dip. Now it’s the turn of my most ill-advised outing.

Later, we will share photos of our swim and find that only our raised-shoulders as we stand at the edge of the water reveal that the blue sky behind us is not a summer sky. Only our hesitant postures show that the blue sea we are entering is 8⁰ Celsius.

The heron watches motionless on the opposite bank as I quiver on the ladder, lowered to my waist and willing my legs to push off into the opaque green water. The pond is a toe-curling, tit-tightening 17 degrees Celsius.
