OH NAOMI WITWICKY MY BELOVED

shit right she's an oc!! i looked at the space in g1 canon of 'sparkplug's wife/spike's mom' and decided i was going to fill it and she was going to be cool. i've known sincebasically i started thinking about 'how would i put the g1 characters in a realistic version of 1980' that the reason Sparkplug is a human man named Sparkplug is because that's his legal name because he changed it when he cut ties with the community of conservative Eastern Oregon Mennonites he was raised in, because his birth name was, I figured, some unwieldy old testament name. so I knew the Witwicky name came from Spike's mom because I also knew I wanted her to be Jewish, because when I write Spike Witwicky he's Jewish, and I ended up with Naomi--and then I looked into the original story and Naomi's husband was Elimelech which is EXACTLY the flavor of unwieldy ancient name no longer in use but found in the bible where mennonites could see it that I was going for.

so Naomi witwicky grew up in the Jewish community in Portland, became a lawyer, and in the 1950s helped found the Oregon chapter of the ACLU (they temporarily disbanded for a decade later on but they did exist in the 50s) and did some work helping arrange bail and legal defenses for people getting arrested at anti-war protests, and in one case ended up escorting one guy from an anti-war protest who got in some kind of disagreement with an asshole to the hospital, and the guy's sweet and kind of cute and they've been chatting and she's been considering maybe asking him on a date once he gets released from the hospital and doesn't need a designated legal observer anymore and she's filling out paperwork for him because he busted his hand and goes 'what's your legal first name' and he goes 'Mel' and then 'well. that's not the whole thing, the whole thing is Elimelech' and it's important to note he pronounces it so incorrectly or at least so far from the Hebrew pronunciation that it doesn't click for her until he spells it out and then she flashes back on being 7 and yelling at her big sister who was teasing her because ooooooo the chapter they were reading this week said Naomi has a husband Naomi's getting married and Naomi yelled at her that she was NEVER getting married especially to a guy with a name that stupid and then she had to go sit in a corner for saying 'stupid' and in the current day 28 year old Naomi who has been getting gently hinted at by her mother about finding a husband for three years now goes 'oh god you can never meet my parents' and Sparkplug who hadn't even thought that was on the table with a girl this cool and no-nonsense goes 'okay??? :(' and anyway spike finds the story of how his parents met, at alternate points in his life, funny and/or deeply embarrassing.

she's a jewish woman lawyer who got her degree in the 1950s and therefore takes no shit from anyone ever and later in life she helps convince the autobots they need an actual embassy and gets attached as a legal consul and helps negotiate land rights for Metroplex. she's cool.
