Midway Thoughts on the Summer of Anime 2017 Season:
Can you believe we are already about halfway through the season?  Where is the fucking time going?  No, seriously, I demand to know where the time is going.  Most of the currently airing shows have reached the mid point of their season, whether that’s the classic sixth or seventh episode, or even third or fifth episode, depending on how many episodes total.  Regardless, it is time once again to give you my midway thoughts about this season and the shows I’m watching, and ones that I’ve dropped.  Keep in mind that since we are at that halfway point, I’m able to go into a bit more details while trying to remain as spoiler free as possible.  Also, please note that this is solely my opinion, and whether your opinion is similar, or different, I’d love to know.  Let’s get started.
Dive!!:  Studio Zero-G
Tumblr media
Dropped.  Honestly, this series was nothing but just a predictable, underwhelming series.  Boy’s club getting shut down?  Oh no!  Boy must become a World Class  ______ in order to save it.  Training episodes.  Things look up.  Oh no, something terrible happens.  Yay.  He did it.  ____ club saved!  At first, I found myself comparing this series to Free!, but I can’t anymore.  It’s lack of literally anything interesting proved that there was no way this was something like Free.  Honestly, unless you live and breathe for Sports anime, don’t bother, unless you want to be reminded about what disappointment is.
Nana Maru San Batsu:  TMS Entertainment
Tumblr media
Dropped.  Why?  Because it’s shit.  Plain and Simple. It started with potiential, but made me completely hate it within the first two episodes with a terrible art style, a bland MC, and a fucking god awful female lead.  Honestly, had this show not been such poorly exacuted, I could have seen this show doing really well.  Oh well.  Moving on.
Iskekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni: Production Reed
Tumblr media
Dropped.  Honestly, there are quite a few reasons why I dropped this show.  Let’s start with the most obvious one: the art style is trash.  It’s just so generic and poorly executed.   I’m also completely sick of the another harem in another world trope.  Granted I’m not really a big fan of harem series in general, and this one managed to throw in a slightly different element by letting the MC keep his smartphone, it still wasn’t enough to make me keep this series for anything longer than two episodes.  At least God understands our first world problems.
Youkoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e: Studio Lerche
Tumblr media
Dropped.   This series was the one that I had the hardest time dropping.  I was told that once it gets to episode three and four, it gets much, much better, and I really did try to get there, but I couldn’t do it.  I just could not do it. That second episode is just bland, and doesn’t feel like it’s even the same series.  Oh well, maybe you guys will have better luck.
Tsurezure Children:  Studio Gokumi
Tumblr media
This is the series that you watch when you’ve had a long day.  It’s cute, and adorable and will put a smile on your face.  It’s the series where you can turn off your brain and relax and watch little kids with their love problems.  What more could you ask for?
Netsuzou TRap:  Creators in Pack
Tumblr media
Disappointed.  Nine Minute Series.  Nine Freaking Minutes.  Honestly, unless you live and breathe for Yuri, don’t waste your time. The manga is a billion times better compared to this.  #StopMakingShittyAdaptations #ForeverSalty
Hitorjime My Hero:  Encourage Flims
Tumblr media
Yeah, I’m still here watching this.   Why you ask?  Meh, I like BL.  In all honestly though, it’s still turning out alright; it is a Shounen Ai, series, so regardless, I always go into them with no expectations, so for now, it’s just slightly better than most.
Hajimete no Gal:  Studio NAZ
Tumblr media
Have we already mentioned that I was trash?   No?  Oh, well, I’m trash because I fucking LOVE this series.  God, this series is so bad, but it’s great.  Guilty freaking pleasure series and I’m totally not even sorry about it.  I think the main problem everyone has with this series is that since it’s a literal softcore hentai, you have to go in with zero expectations, and literally remind yourself it’s a comedy and shouldn’t be taken seriously.  Oh well, it’s trash, and I’m trash, but I love it.
Koi no Uso:  LIDENFLIMS
Tumblr media
Have you ever wanted to drop a show, but didn’t because you prayed deep down that your question would be answered by the end of the series, knowing full well that, of course, it wouldn’t be?  Well, that’s how I feel with this show.  I want to drop it.  I really want to drop it.  But, I know full well that even though it won’t be answered, it might be answered if I watch it all.  I had some high hopes for this series, and hell, after episode three, I was going strong with this series, but then . . . it just started falling short.  Pretty soon, I’ll be left with nothing but a bitter taste in my mouth as this show just falls into the pile of “meh” anime with the rest of this year.  Salty thoughts right?  Well, at least you guys know I’ll be following the series til the end.
Made in Abyss:  Kinema Citrus
Tumblr media
If this isn’t the best this season, then it’s definitely the cutest.  This show is wonderful.  After starting it fairly late into the season, and not really knowing what to expect, I instantly became hooked by the third episode.  I also love our MC.  This series is also something completely different, and I’m super thankful for that.
Kakegurui:  Studio MAPPA
Tumblr media
Mmmmmm.   My fucking gods.  I live for these intense psychological series.  I live for the moments where the tones shift into that disturbing take.  MAPPA has been doing those transitions so fucking well.  The characters are very well written, and the plot line is fucking intense and hooks you in from that start.  I literally can not fucking wait for each episode.  Also, Rune is Best Fucking Girl.   Fuck You.  Fight Me.
Ballroom e Youkoso:  Production I.G.
Tumblr media
Easily one of my favorites this season, and we are barely a fourth of the way into it, which makes me so fucking happy.  I never thought I’d care about a series about Ballroom Dancing; hell, I thought I’d seen it all, but damn, this series is taking me on a ride.  There isn’t a thing I don’t like about this series.  Everything is done beautifully to actually fit the series.  If you are looking for something to watch this season, please watch this.  I could honestly see this becoming as big as Yuri on Ice is.
Jigoku Shojo:  Studio Deen
Tumblr media
Hi, it’s been years since I had my season three, but I’m back, and better than ever before.  Fuck, I’ve missed Hell Girl so fucking much.  You never truly realize how much you love a show until they gift it with a random season years later.  Every. Fucking. Episode. Has. Been. Amazing.  I fucking love it.  I’m still not over those first two episodes.  This is one of the few shows this season where I must watch it the moment it’s available.  I can’t wait for the rest of the season.
Owarimonogatari Part II:  Studio Shaft
Tumblr media
I’M NOT CRYING, YOU’RE CRYING!!
I want to call this season a masterpiece, but even that doesn’t feel like a strong enough word.  The opening scene with Mayoi-chan literally made me weep tears of joy.  Japan did the most wonderful thing by making a two day special.  I don’t know what I like best about this season:  Mayoi, Kiss-Shot, Ononoki, or freaking Hanekawa, or even Araragi.  I know it’s not the end of the series since there’s still Part Three of Owarimonogatari, as well as several other novels yet to be adapted, but fuck, this season cleared up so many plot lines.  I need more.  Thank you Shaft for proving why you are the best.  Needless to say, not only is this the best thing of the season/year, this is also one of the best things ever created; it’s also currently tied with Kimi no Na Wa for the top spot on MAL, and trust me it’s well deserved.
Boku no Hero Academia:  Studio Bones
Tumblr media
Boku no Fucking Hero Academia is still fucking killing it.  Stain was hype.  The art and animation look fucking amazing, and hell, even the filler episode was wonderful.  WHY ARE YOU NOT WATCHING THIS??!?!?!?!
So anyways, that is my mid season thoughts of the series I am watching. Please keep in mind these are merely my thoughts, and I am not watching everything this season, so if there’s something that I’ve missed, or something that I should be watching, please let me know. Also, tell me some of your thoughts for this season.

Summer Anime* 2017 Lightning Review
*Just the shows I watched, of course
I’m leaving out shows that I dropped, so if you remember me talking about a show but it’s not listed here, I was either bored by it or just didn’t enjoy it anymore after a certain point, and that’s really all there is to say~!
Shows Included: 18if, Action Heroine Cheer Fruits, Aho Girl, Boku no Hero Academia 2nd Season, Centaur no Nayami, Classroom of the Elite, Clione no Akari, Gamers!, Hajimete no Gal, Isekai Shokudou, Kakegurui, Keppeki Danshi! Aoyama-kun, Knight’s & Magic, Koi to Uso, Made in Abyss, Nana Maru San Batsu, New Game!!,  Nobunaga no Shinobi: Ise Kanegasaki-hen, Pokemon Sun & Moon, Princess Principal, Teekyuu 9, Tenshi no 3P!, Tsurezure Children,
Reminder that there are spoilers in the reviews below
18if I didn’t quite get what they were trying for with this show until about half-way through. This felt like more of an excuse to explore and experiment stylistically than to actually tell a story at most times, but because of that it got to tell lots of varied and unusual-for-anime stories, including an episode exploring the culture of the hearing impaired/deaf population of Japan, which was really cool. The ending just ended up being kind of wank, but since there wasn’t really that big of a reveal set up, it wasn’t that disappointing. If you want to see some interesting visual styles and some cool Twilight Zone style reveals, you might give this show a shot. 7/10
Action Heroine Cheer Fruits This was quietly one of the better shows of the season. It had the same framework story-wise as Love Live; girls end up banding together to save a building from being demolished and help support the town by buying into the newest fad sweeping the nation. Only instead of idol groups, it’s “local heroes”, live stage shows portraying sentai and superhero like characters beating villains with the goods and virtues representing the town they’re from. The girls are all really cute, even the really cliché ojou-sama~ Shimura had her moments. I will also give this show all the praise in the world for not only including a handicapped character but also making her a central figure to the plot. The ending of the finale where she is included in the show after working behind the scenes for so long tugged on my heart strings a bit. Plus, there is a not so vague relationship between Misaki and Roko, with Roko probably being my favorite character in the show. It’s not as moe as Love Live and the comedy isn’t as quality as something like Yuru Yuri or Wakaba Girl, but it’s still a great show. 9/10
Aho Girl The comedy reminded me of a mixture of Saiki-kun and Plustic Nee-san; very off the wall slapstick kind of stuff, but still really clever and you could tell there was a lot of love put into this show. I don’t know that I would say I laughed the most while watching this show this season (more on that later), but I would say it’s the comedy of the season for sure. Was really easy to forget the episodes were only 12 minutes long because it was just jam-packed with gags. Definitely a must watch for 2017. 10/10 Boku no Hero Academia 2nd Season I definitely feel like the girl characters are getting more screen time in season 2, which is always good. I still don’t see what people see in Bakugo, even after reading ahead in the manga, I don’t feel like his attitude is “redeemed” or “explained” much at all. Hero Killer Stain definitely stole the show; he’s so grungy and RAW, and Go Inoue delivers Stain’s final lines so passionately he almost had me convinced he was the real deal. Like I said earlier, I’ve read ahead, so some of the moments to come are exciting, but there are also some that I can feel will take up waaay too much time, or even have filler put in, which I’m not looking forward to as shounen manga stretches things out enough as it is. Will certainly get another season, it’s so popular it would be stranger for it to not get a third one. 7/10
Centaur no Nayami It’s been a while since I have read the manga, but I feel like they got many of the voices down exactly the way I imagined them. However, it also felt like there was a lot of stuff that was anime-original, or at least were out of order. As much as I can remember, this was the only anime this season with a confirmed-in-show homosexual couple, and while the explanation to the kids in the scene left a lot to be desired, considering the overlying theme of “zero-tolerance tolerance” towards discrimination, felt kind of odd, and felt like maybe the studio made it a little more conservative than it was in the manga. It was a shame that a lot of the everyday life moments from the manga were cut out in favor of more tropes per minute. What I’m trying to say is that while the show is good, it isn’t the best representation of the manga that it could have been in my opinion. 8/10
Classroom of the Elite This show was almost trash, but was saved by the revelation of Ayanokoji’s true self at the very end. Right as Horikita is seemingly spilling her tsundere guts out to him as well. This, in a similar vein to Kakegurui, was really unintentionally comedic to me. There was zero tension at all, mostly because you could see where it was going in most cases. I think it was a bit cheap to have the solution to how Ayanokoji would win the survival test come from a rule they never mentioned about the classes losing points for guessing other class leaders wrong. It would be like having a multiple choice question A/B/C/D and then saying the answer was E. I also think Kushida was a dud. Every time she tried to buddy up or get closer to Ayanokoji, I kept waiting for him to say “At the risk of you blackmailing me again, I agree.” Especially when she asked him who would he choose between her and Horikita it’s like... gee, do I pick the super effective mark I just procured or the girl who has blackmail on me and is asking me this? I wonder... A show that thinks very highly of itself unjustly. 5/10
Clione no Akari This was kind of bizarre series; it was pretty obvious from the beginning that a certain character would die or was already dead. It felt like a series aimed at like 10 year olds, in an effort to teach them about bullying through entertainment. I don’t really have much to say about it, it had an obvious message with a miserable ending, I’d say pass on it. 5/10 Gamers! I’m not as enamored with this series as most people seem to be, but it has it’s charms to be sure. Karen and Aguri are really great, and in a close third Uehara-kun, but I’m not a fan of Chiaki and Keita, which is kind of bad considering they are the ones we’re meant to be rooting for. I was also pretty shocked at how well received this was considering it is almost entirely a love-pentagon rom-com; any other series with a love triangle or more seems to be met with “ugh, why does this shit have to be in here.” I suppose if it’s meant to be poking fun at the trope as a whole, then I can see it, but if that’s the case then it was so blunt I immediately dismissed it as being too likely to be the case. Karen is probably my fav in the show, and I was kind of annoyed that the rest of the actual game club didn’t really show up much at all despite the early hype for each member. Aguri is a late favorite, mostly because of how she was in the finale; a person who genuinely doesn’t understand the appeal of video games but is still willing to hang out with gamers and tease them about gaming’s darker sides. 8/10 Hajimete no Gal This was basically what I thought Galko-chan was going to be, but it also had it’s own uniqueness to it. The show knew what it was, and didn’t take itself too seriously, but wasn’t a slouch either; it made an effort to make the characters get to know each other and come together somewhat organically, considering how big the cast was. Obviously I’m drawn to Eri Kitamura’s Ranko; the misunderstood childhood friend with a gay crush on her best friend beating up any guys that try to get in her way is something I can get behind as a protagonist, let alone a side character. I think this show is actually more interesting censored than uncensored because they did it creatively and on-theme instead of just mysterious beams of light or clouds of steam. A fun show if you don’t mind sex comedies. 9/10
Isekai Shokudou The “comfy” show of the season to be sure. A great lesson in evolving narrative as well; it starts of with seemingly one off stories each week, but begins to intertwine the stories of the patrons that come along, which was done quite well. The only real problem with it is that, it’s called a western restaurant multiple times in the show, but almost everything they serve is Japanese; it was a real missed opportunity to introduce food from around the world to the Japanese audience, who would be able to relate even more to the bewildered fantasy characters coming to eat every seven days. That being said, if you just want to relax and enjoy something really just pleasant, or need to make yourself hungry, too, this is the show for you. 10/10 highly recommended
Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni It’s kind of a misleading title, to be honest; it’s meant to convey how powerful his smartphone is in this new fantasy land devoid of most technology, but it’s actually more that God gave him affinity to all elements that makes the protagonist so OP. If that wasn’t enough, he can also learn all null magic, which is meant to be like character specific spells... He doesn’t even have to be taught them, he just have to read about them in a book and he can use it, which is crazy ridiculous in any other show, but because you are expecting him to be over-powered from the start, it’s actually quite enjoyable, in my opinion. The harem stuff was tedious but at least they acknowledged that a) in a medieval setting and time period polygamy being normal makes sense and b) protagonist is still holding on to his previous world and life’s customs of monogamy, and won’t commit to marrying all of them, not yet, anyway. I don’t know that I’d watch a second season of this to be honest. It would have to go one of two ways; either an actual challenge shows up, or he ends up similar to One Punch Man, and begins working on a way to go home or something. 8/10
Kakegurui I said earlier that Aho Girl is comedy of the season, but that I didn’t laugh at it the most this season. This show (and another) would be the reason behind that. I don’t know if I’m just too jaded for it or what but the fact that this show was billed as “psychological” slays me. How anyone could take any of these characters or situations seriously, in the most obvious hentai setting on the planet, is beyond me. The style and animation was all ready pretty and well done, as were the expressions. It’s hard not to compare it to Prison School visually. My main complaint would be that Yumeko isn’t fleshed out enough; they tried to make her this force of nature type character but so was the student council president, who was far more mysterious (naturally), so she just ended up feeling underdeveloped. Since this probably won’t get a second season, I would have liked for the finale to be more in jeopardy by having the second to last episode end with the “president” denying Yumeko’s challenge with a smile, which would have been devastating to Yumeko. If you would like an edgy version of over the top characters rivaling the Phoenix Wright series that take themselves a bit too seriously, you might give it a watch. It’s hysterical. 7/10
Keppeki Danshi! Aoyama-kun I’ll be brief about this one; it’s basically Sakamoto Desu ga, Tanaka-kun wa Itsumo Kedaruge, and DAYS!! mixed together. Make of that what you will. I loved the coach and the girls’ basketball star character. 7/10
Knight’s & Magic FINALLY another mecha show I can get into! Just had to make it wizardy and junk, I guess. Another show this season where the protag is OP and it ends up being just fine, honestly. A slight complaint would be that they bother to mention how much time passes between scenes multiple times, some of which are “many months” long, yet none of the characters visibly change with time. It kind of reminded me a bit of Arslan, in some ways. I would have liked to see more about the mysterious race that guards the secrets to the mech engines as well. If you’re only kind of sorta into mecha like me and want something different, this is a great show just for you! 9/10
Koi to Uso Really should have dropped this one, but there was just a glimmer of hope now and then that this would actually have an ending. It didn’t though, and now I feel like I wasted six hours of my life. There wasn’t even any big reveal in the finale that would be a hook to get me to read the rest of the story, just “he loves both and well I guess that’s it.” I liked how genuinely awkward the protagonist was; these days in anime they’ll say the protagonist is weird, otaku, awkward, but then he’ll be the least nerdy of his friends, or “borderline weird”, which when he’s with his friends makes him look normal (see Hajimete no Gal), which defeats the purpose. The guy friend who was in love with the protagonist was really interesting, and it felt like they didn’t do enough to make it feel like he would ever actually confess. The show isn’t particularly funny or poignant either, it’s just kind of there. The thing I will remember most about this show is that it had a catchy opening theme. 4/10
Made in Abyss It’s a crying shame that this isn’t a 24 episode season; who knows how long it will be until a second season, though apparently it’s pretty likely to happen. Don’t let the cute characters and pleasant background masterpiece artwork full you; there is some pretty gnarly shit in this show, particularly Mitty, a formerly-human blob of body parts that is functionally immortal, despite her friend Nanachi’s best efforts to put her out of her misery. You get to see, fully on screen, how this 10 year old became a puddle of skin, or basically the eldritch version of a pokemon. It’s fucked up. I honestly had to look away. Still, it’s a great adventure show filled with real peril and very, very dire consequences. My favorite character was Ozen because of how creepy she is but also I love her voice, it stands out from every other voice in the show. 10/10 must watch
Nana Maru San Batsu I have participated in quiz bowl in the past, but it was never this hardcore, yet still managed to have the elitist bullshit attitudes, so I wasn’t too sure I was going to like this one. However, Mari Fukami and Akira Sonohara kept me around. It’s rare to see a girl in a setting like this that is shown to have earnest and ambition separate from revenge; sure, she wants to redeem quiz bowl for her brother so she can play him again, but in general she just really loves it and wants to be better at it. Akira is fantastic, I empathize with them (for the sake of brevity, gender neutral pronouns will be used) on a lot of levels when it comes to games. Whenever I play canasta with my family, they just want to play to the bottom of the draw pile, which, when you want to play multiple games, can take HOURS, so I started playing where I would keep all of my cards in my hand, and then “go out” all at once to end the round. They stopped asking me to play because of it, but it sure was fun to throw a wrench into things while still “playing the game”. Also, Akira is really cute, I really loved the side ponytail wig. ANYWAY, I had low expectations, but this turned out to be pretty good, though there were some points I was skimming through. 8/10
New Game!! Anime of the season. I just can’t get enough of these ladies and their interpersonal dynamics. While things were once again switched around from the manga, it still feels very much like its right off the page, and a lot of that has to do with the fact that Shoutarou Tokunou, the creator of the manga, sat in on script meetings and even wrote the script for some episodes! Which is pretty unheard of I think. He even started bringing a tablet with the script on it to make changes to the script on the fly. I’m really torn on the ending; they just about all but said Rin and Ko are lovers, which was actually more than what happened in the manga, but didn’t pull the trigger. I also feel like Ko leaving is a hell of a cliffhanger, especially considering the anime is basically caught up to the manga already. Tokunou has said that Ko’s time in France will be included in the next volume, so maybe in a couple years there could be a third season? That’s being greedy though; it got a second season, and I was already reading the manga before the anime so continuing to read it won’t be an issue. I just love them so much. 10/10 highest recommendation
Nobunaga no Shinobi: Ise Kanegasaki-hen Continues to be one of the better short form series I’ve ever seen. The comedy is always extremely clever and the historical accounts and the sarcastic take on such revered figures is always great to see. If you are interested in the time period or Nobunaga specifically but don’t take them too seriously you should really be already watching this. 9/10
Pokemon Sun & Moon I haven’t been this into Pokemon for a LOOONG time, and it is 100% to do with this series I think. It’s just so fun and energetic, there’s no world-ending threat (yet), the kids are all just hanging out and discovering new Pokemon stuff together. Lillie is of course the show stealer, and it would be great to see her travel as a full time companion with Ash eventually, since she essentially leaves at the end of Sun/Moon games to become a Pokemon master, just like Ash. I may have missed about 400 episodes of the series, but I don’t remember ever seeing any of the companions as like an apprentice to Ash, so that would be a new take for the series to use I think. I said Lillie steals the show, but Musahi/Jessie is still my number one gal; she is outstanding in this season, and is honestly becoming one of my favorite animated characters ever. Which covers a lot of ground. I know some people are down on the character design and over-exaggerated reactions, but I think, like the Sun/Moon games did for the game series, this was the breath of fresh air that the series needed to stay relevant. Continues!
Princess Principal The finale felt really flat/anticlimactic. They are definitely planning on a second season, or some way to extend the story like a game, which hurt it in my opinion by leaving too many things open-ended. Also seemed really hackneyed to have Princess and Ange just immediately back to lovey-dovey mode, despite Princess telling Ange to never let her see her again after a pretty hardcore betrayal. A begrudging thank you from Princess after being saved and a stern re-establishment of their relationship as mutually beneficial rather than romantic (or extremely platonic) that would build back up to it’s previous height in a continued story setting seems like it would have been a better choice. Best girl was Dorothy easily, for me. She seemed the most like a spy out of the whole group, and was kind of the Dick Grayson to Ange’s Batman; for raw ability she may be a bit behind Ange, but Dorothy has the heart and the willpower to really become a legend in the game, while holding the group together. Even though the show felt like it fell on it’s face at the end, the rest of it was crazy good, especially the episode where they confront the double agent and former classmate. 8/10
Teekyuu 9 Speechless. How do you describe perfection. Mandatory viewing. 10/10
Tenshi no 3P! Despite the pedo alarm sounding on nearly a weekly basis for this show, it ended up not being too bad. It was kind of like Ryo-Kyu-Bu but if all of the girls were professional level athletes already. To be able to play like that at age 7 or 8, and “not know what to do” with it seems really silly, but it’s more of a story about dragging the protag out of his room after becoming a shut-in from bullying. I feel like in the end the protag will end up with the age appropriate older sister, but then again I thought that way with Usagi Drop and Listen to Me Girls! I am Your Father! so who knows where this will go. Not to a second season, most likely. 6/10
Tsurezure Children I’m sure many people on tumblr were aware of this series without actually know the title, so it was nice to see it make the rounds every week with a decent amount of popularity. There’s not really one couple I would pin down as my favorite, it’s all just really clever gag writing that is couple with great visuals, another great short form series. 9/10

The Week in Anime (Week of 8/14/17)
Hello friends and welcome to another edition of TWiA! There’s a lot to get through, but first let’s head on over to...
The News Corner
This week didn’t have too much in terms of shocking news. The one thing I do want to highlight that came out this week is:
Violet Evergarden PV2
Mmm that’s good stuff. Not as amazingly animated as the first CM, but that was more or less done for the light novel so I don’t expect the whole show to be that level of quality. And even then the PV had some dang good animation, complete with some more information about the show. From the translation done here, one might think it has a big focus on romance. And that’s what I thought too, that is until I read another comment in the same thread that mentioned light novel spoilers but had a TL;DR stating it’s a coming-of-age story and not a romance. Good to know, otherwise I probably would’ve had the wrong expectations for it.
I’m not gonna lie though, I’m pretty hyped for this show. I’m trying not to be, but ever since the CM came out (which was the first glimpse of the show), my first question was “when?” (which has since turned into “how many days until January?”). I’m excited for the potential pairing between KyoAni animation and a great story considering the light novel won the Grand Prize award in the same yearly award that other light novel-turned-KyoAni shows like Kyoukai no Kanata and Chuunibyou only got Honorable Mentions in. Well, only four months to go. That’s not that long of a wait honestly.
Now before I get onto the rankings and awards, I want to write some blurbs about some shows I recently finished. Now some of these shows aren’t ones I finished within the last week, but I think it’s a good time to talk about them after having them stew in my head for a little. So let me start by talking about a show I might have an article on in the future...
Love Live Sunshine
With season 2 of this coming soon, I was determined to try and finish this show. And I did. So that’s nice.
On a more serious note, Sunshine was a nice sort of spin-off to the main Love Live anime. I think one of the biggest complaints I heard was that it was too similar to the original anime, and I can see that. The whole school-closing storyline was a bit too convenient, though it actually didn’t get resolved by the end of the season, so that’s something to keep an eye out next season. Another thing was the similarities of the leaders of each group, which I strongly agree with. I mean I wasn’t a huge Honoka (Honkers) fan in general, and Chika to me feels sorta like a ripoff of her (hence the reason I call her Ripoff Honkers).
But some of the other stuff wasn’t as bad to me. Like other than Ripoff Honkers (and Dia to an extent) I feel like each character is unique enough to be their own person, rather than be a clone of a previous μ‘s member. Sure there’s some obvious parallels that can be made. Ruby/Hanayo for shyness (which is even eluded to in the anime), Mari/Nozomi for being the memester, etc. But when I think of, say Hanamaru, I don’t think of anybody from μ‘s in particular, but about her zuras and her eating habits. Same schtick for the rest of them (except Ripoff Honkers). If anything, I like Aqours a bit more than μ‘s so far, if only because my favorite character from the Rabu Raibus is in Aqours (though favorite group is still a toss-up as of now).
Story-wise, I liked Sunshine a lot more than the original, if only because there was a minimum of the “power of friendship” stuff that the original had (like the final scene from the last episode of S1). And before episode 10 when the third-years joined the group, I actually liked how the drama didn’t feel too cheesy. Of course, that changed when the third-years joined, but it still wasn’t as cheesy as the original show, which was nice. Add in the fact that the slice-of-life scenes added some nice snark (making it less /r/wholesomememes cult-like happy), and in the end Sunshine > original (at least anime-wise). 6/10 overall, and actually somewhat excited for the next season in 2 months-ish.
Free!
Funny story. Actually not really funny, or a story: I had this on my list for some time, but it wasn’t until I visited my friend last week that we ended up watching the first 6 episodes of this show. And then from there I finished it a few days later, and now we’re here.
This show’s pretty famous for its manservice (fanservice of the male variety), and I’m not gonna deny that. In fact, I’ll confirm it: there were a lot of shots of those muscular sculpted bodies, toned to perfection.
...
Uh yeah. But other than that this show was actually pretty fun to watch. I don’t know how much of that is the fact that there was at least one main girl character in the show, who ended becoming one of my favorite girls and now has a place in my Favorite Characters list on my MAL profile.
But it’s really because in it’s core it’s a sports anime, and not of the shounen type. Like there’s competition and hype sports moments with none of the shounen tropes like explaining every single ilttle thing. It’s actually... like sports with just plain competing, which as a huge sports nut I’m down for. The races were pretty hype, and the drama between the characters wasn’t too out there (though the whole thing between Rin and Haruka seemed very ship-friendly).
So overall, a surprisingly good show, manservice aside. I’ll definitely be watching the second season of this soon (once I settle in to my new place). 7/10 would recommend for swimming shenanigans.
Teekyuu
In my quest to have Nisemonogatari be my 200th entry on MAL, I watched shorts/specials that wouldn’t take too much time to watch. So why not watch the famed 2-minute short known for having faster pace than the Roadrunner? Generally I don’t like fast-paced shows, but I think that this short does a really good job with itself. Content-wise this show is so freaking ridiculous and doesn’t take itself seriously. But it works for the most part, and it’s pretty hilarious. Though it’s technically about a tennis club, I think they only have tennis in like 3 of the episodes, with the others focusing on some other random subject.
If there’s one negative to this, it’s the pace. Because as well as they use it, it’s still super quick, and sometimes an episode goes by and I go “what just happened?” Still, it’s a stupidly fun show: overall 6/10, and definitely will be watching the next 8 seasons (no I’m not joking, the ninth season is airing right now).
Nisemonogatari
So that was an adventure. This was an interesting case study, considering these were the stories that Nisio Isin (the author of the light novel) never intended to be released. As a result this show ended up being probably the most controversial entry in the Monogatari series. And it showed: this version of Monogatari really ramped up on some questionable scenes. Before I get into the infamous scene this show’s known for, let me get into some other stuff I wasn’t really about. First, the bath scene in episode 4. I don’t doubt it was an important scene: in fact it’s probably one of the most important scenes in the whole of Monogatari. But it’s the whole showing a naked 8-year old girl for the majority of the episode thing that made me pretty uncomfortable. It’s funny looking at the comments of the rewatch thread, and people trying to explain why it wasn’t that bad. The most common thing I saw was that it wasn’t sexualized at all, what with Araragi not being pedo like he is with the others and the fact that there wasn’t any zoom-ins of the naughty bits.
Yet the problem I have with that is that at it’s core it’s still... a naked 8-year old for the majority of an anime episode. And I’m not denying what the people in that thread are saying: actually it makes a hella lot of sense. But it’s still a naked 8-year old. I’m not about that life, even with the deeper meaning and all that.
And now that toothbrush scene. That... was a thing. Yep, a thing. Indeed. A. Thing.
Sigh... that was honestly the most uncomfortable I’ve been while watching anime. I’m glad I live alone or else I would have feared a roommate or something coming into my room and seeing me watch that.
Now before you start telling me “deeper meaning” and all that jazz, I’ll just say this: my least favorite subject was English. The reason? I always had to be on the lookout for some deeper meaning, some symbolism, etc., instead of just enjoying reading. Now with the Monogatari series full of its more deeper themes, symbolism and looking deeper into events is very necessary. But looking past the deeper meaning this scene is a guy brushing his sister’s teeth while she starts getting sexually aroused, almost leading to a kiss in the end. That’s... also not my thing. Big time.
Well, that rant’s out of the way. Not counting the above scenes (as well as some of the other questionable stuff like imouto boob touch), I actually did enjoy this show. Monogatari’s slowly becoming one of my favorite franchises, making what should like a boring dialogue-heavy show fun and interesting. And now that Nisemonogatari’s out of the way I’m excited for what’s arguably the best version of Monogatari, Monogatari 2nd Season (kinda misnamed don’tcha think?). Overall despite above statements still a 7/10 show, with hope for the future.
Now that that’s done let’s move on to the good ol’...
Rankings:
1 (0). New Game!! (9/10) [5/12]
2 (0). Princess Principal (8.5/10) [6/?]
3 (0). Kakegurui (7/10) [6/12]
4 (0). Tsurezure Children (7/10) [6/?]
5 (0). Boku no Hero Academia 2nd Season (7/10) [19/25]
6 (+1). Sakura Quest (5/10) [19/25]
7 (-1). Ballroom e Youkoso (5/10) [6/24]
8 (0). Centaur no Nayami (5/10) [6/12]
9 (0). Isekai Shokudou (4.5/10) [6/?]
10 (0). Nana Maru San Batsu (4/10) [6/12]
Awards
The Tangent Award: Centaur no Nayami
After 6 episodes, I think I have a general idea of why I feel like this show is off. Now, don’t get me wrong, I do like the show. Some of the scenes offer some nice commentary on the small issues that these people face (like the whole toilet thing) that some people may think is pedantic but I think is super interesting. Basically the stuff like the first few episodes of Demi-chan wa Kataritai (with the nice interviews and stuff).
The problem that this show has is that it goes through different scenes that seem jarring in transition. It jumps from one thing to a completely random thing, leaving me wondering how they even got to a certain point in the episode. Though in the end they’re able to show that the disjointed events are somewhat connected, the connection’s as fragile as Troy Tulowitzki (sports fan explanation: a baseball player who’s seemingly always injured, hence he’s called “fragile”). And in the end I continue on, wondering what I just watched for the past 23 or so minutes. I feel like there’s a better way to organize the episode, but I’m not really sure how yet. For now I’ll just continue watching, because despite questionable organization it’s still a mildly entertaining show.
The Not Comfy Award: Kakegurui
Yo but actually what was that episode. Return of masochist queen = return of fear for my life. This show isn’t high on my “comfy show” list, but after this episode it’s sunken even lower.
On a totally unrelated note, I’ve changed my opinion from slightly liking Yumeko to not liking her at all. In fact it’s kinda funny that my opinions of Yumeko and Mary flipped, and now I find Mary to be the better girl (if not best girl of the show). Seeing how she’s not just one of the crazies and actually seems kinda nice is reassuring to say the least (even if the crazy leaks out at times). The return of Suzui was also nice, considering he’s a good dynamic compared to the insane characters in the show. If anything, I’m curious to see how this ends, considering the pace so far and the fact that it’s one cour.
Best Episode of the Week: Princess Principal
After three straight weeks of New Game!!, we finally get a new show for best episode of the week. It was a hard choice, considering this week’s episode of New Game!! was very good. But Princess Principal wins out with a great episode about Dorothy and her life before being a spy.
I won’t go deep into the episode because I want to try to not have too much spoilers in these blurbs. But what I will say is that dang, these girls have good reason for being spies. Also that the end of this episode was pretty sad, especially considering Dorothy’s final line. Princess Principal’s been impressing so far, and I love the disjointed style of storytelling (with case 6 last week and case 18 this week). Next to New Game!!, this show’s been my favorite of the season. I highly recommend it even if you aren’t the biggest fan of CGDCTs or spy stuff.
And that’s all for this week! Thanks for reading! Just a quick announcement/notice: I’ll be busy next week preparing for school and moving into my new place, so I wouldn’t be surprised if I don’t have the time to watch the currently-airing shows. If that does happen I’ll mention which ones I didn’t get to, and if it doesn’t well then it’ll be business as usual. Anyway, thanks again and I’ll see you in the next post!

Summer 2017 Plan To Watch List
i was actually considering doing this early since i wanted to talk about the upcoming series so much. there’s a good chance i’ll actually end up watching the first episode of many things when they come out, but i’ll do this normally for now.
YES!!!  (gonna watch as soon as first episode airs)
Kakegurui (the main character looks exactly like the kind of character i like. this entire show screams absolute assholery and i love it. the production quality also seems to be really high)
Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu (i’ve been playing touken ranbu for a year now and i’m very attached to these characters, so i’d probably watch this even if it were really bad. i’ve heard that ufotable hired an actual historian for accuracy though and that gives me good hope about this doing well)
Keppeki Danshi! Aoyama-kun (seems to have a Handa-kun/I’m Sakamoto sense of humor, and i enjoy that humor so i’ll give this a go)
Isekai Shokudou (gives me a sweet, mature, classy vibe. i’‘ve heard good things about the source material as well)
Hitorijime My Hero (i typically stay away from shounen-ai due to tropes in the genre i dislike, but this seems harmless and cute)
Shoukoku no Altair (a little disappointed in the art transition, but this seems to be an interesting shounen. people who’s opinion i trust have vouched for the manga as well. i think it’ll have some psychological themes)
Ballroom e Youkoso  (one of my most awaited titles!! the manga has done brilliantly and i trust production IG to follow through with the quality)
THE REFLECTION (i’m a fan of the director and i’m a fan of western styled super heroes so despite the fact the synopsis is lacking i’m really looking forward to this)
Maybe! (kinda iffy on these but if i hear good feedback i’ll probably start it)
Koi to Uso (overall looks to be an average romance but i like gay characters and i very well might watch this for that gay character)
Tsurezure Children (i was initially going to pass this but the jokes land pretty often and it’s got some cute characters)
Netsuzou TRap (particularly wary about this one. i like gay characters but the setup to this romance make me nervous. i really think cheating is awful)
Dive!! (like many others i mistook it for a Free knock-off, but let it be known the novel series Dive is based on came out in 2000-02 while Free is an original anime that aired in 2013. i really dislike speedos and do not have an interest in chiseled dude abs though so i might end up passing this one anyways)
Made in Abyss (i am very afraid. looking at manga spoilers was a Mistake™)
Vatican Kiseki Chousakan (i don’t often see religion in anime and that intrigues me. not sure about the quality as of yet but it’s worth keeping an eye on. the false miracle investigation intrigues me)
Centaur no Nayami (from what i’ve seen, Haoliners isn’t a good studio. almost everything they’ve made is a 6 with a few sparse 7s. but this seems innocent and cute. kind of like Interviews With Monster Girls)
Princess Principal (i don’t know much about this actually, i just heard it was action-packed and cool. so that’s good enough for now)
Jikan no Shihaisha (i’m actually getting a lot of bad vibes from this but like, a fun bad. and entertaining bad. the premise reminds me of a very specific episode in Doctor Who in which Rose and 9 go back to see Rose’s dad and accidentally cause a time paradox, causing these time eating monsters to come and devour everything. i’m assuming this’ll be in the same ball park, resulting in an amusing paradoxical clusterfuck)
Maybe not (might watch it months later or has like a 5% chance of me watching it)
Fate/Apocrypha (i haven’t watched any of the Fate series yet, even if this is just a spin off i’d feel like i was starting the show in the middle of th series. i will watch the Fate series someday though)
Youkai Apartment no Yuuga na Nichijou (this seems pretty normal but the lack of attention and kind of lackluster cover image has me concerned)
Nana Maru San Batsu (not giving me good vibes but it could be an interesting intellectual sports anime. or it could tank really badly and i’m betting on the latter)
Saiyuuki Reload Blast (i’ve actually been thinking about starting Saiyuuki all day today. i definitely will. maybe not actually today but someday it’ll happen. the premise sounds so kickass. i’m all for a priest with a gun travelling all over with a gang of demons to beat the bad guy)
18if (i’m not even sure what this is supposed to be, but it seems so bizarre that i can’t help but be interested)
Jigoku Shoujo: Yoi no Togi (i’ve been interested in watching Hell Girl for a while now so i’m glad to see it’s getting a continuation)
Owarimonogatari 2nd Season (i just recently finished Bakemonogatari, which i enjoyed enough to want to continue the series, but it’ll be a while before i get to Owari)

Koshiyama and Mikuriya interactions - ep 2-3
Ok., o.k I know this... I lost this, Mikuriya just appeared and I already totally lost this ;) But I can’t do anything with this because really his and Koshiyama interactions were just too cute for me to not notice and not fell for this ship. :) So here lil collection of some important/cute moments these two had. :D I really can’t wait to see more of them. Their interactions are so funny and cute :D (It will be long post, so sorry //// but mostly because of pics)
1. Mikuriya is such dork.. He just met Koshiyama and he already start to show off with his fast buzzing ;)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. Who are you? moment. ;) Like really who are you.. Mikuriya is this your way of pick up on cute boys? Like you don’t even know him and you were already so chummy ;)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. Yeah good one. ;)  Mikuriya your pick up lines are really great I don’t have words ;)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(aw lil boy is sulking ;) coz you call him middle schooler... but don’t worry Mikuriya boy, not for too long)
Tumblr media
4. Yeah great..
Tumblr media Tumblr media
now you made poor Koshiyama boy blushed, baka Mikuriya! ;) He already was embarrassed enough. Poor thing.
Tumblr media
5. O.k and now is time to show off a little. :D Go, Go Mikuriya.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
- Koshiyama is of course totally enchanted now. :D Good job, my smart Mikuriya. :D
Tumblr media
6. Don’t forget that Mikuriya was observing Koshiyama during his battle. And was visibly mesmerized by him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(this lil smile on his face gives me life)
Tumblr media
7. I just love this lil scene how Mikuriya noticed how stressed Koshiyama is and started to consider if maybe he should give chance to others to hear questions. He has such weak heart for baby Koshiyama, no wonder, he is so cute. :D and the fact he call him kid ;) Man, you forgot you are in the same age? ;) I know he is lil and cute, but stop, he will sulk again. ;)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
8. And all this scenes when Mikuriya observed Koshiyama and how he noticed every lil growth of Koshiyama. He totally can’t stop staring at baby Koshiyama. :D
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
8. But ah the cutest scene after all was this one I guess. :) When Koshiyama finally noticed something and was so excited he was wondering if Mikuriya also noticed this. Look at these two cute blushing beans. :D And pouting and blushing Mikuriya bean is too much for my heart.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
9. And there is also this when Koshiyama made right answer and Mikuriya smiled and looked and baby Koshiyama.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
10. And of course there is also this scene from final contest which is kind of very intense. And maybe don’t give fluff like previous ones but is very important for their future relationship. It shows to Mikuriya how amazing Koshiyama is. He cna’t believe someone could get with answer faster than him. HE was already fascinated by this boy but now level of fascination got 10000. But aw poor Koshiyama felt so bad that he interrupted Mikuriya’s important moment. But I guess he wasn’t angry he just couldn’t believe in his eyes and got so enchanted by this pure talent.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
11. I find this kind of interesting that when Mikuriya meet Koshiyama and Mari in train he pretended he doesn’t know them... which make Koshiyama think that he is angry for the fact he interrupted him. Yet on the same time totally listening about what they talk. Plus... when Mari left Koshiyama and he was all alone...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
12... Mikuriya approached Koshiyama by surprise. :D Like maan, you were in the train together for such long time... why you didn’t say a word then? You were waiting specially that you will be one by one. :D ho ho interesting. :D
Tumblr media Tumblr media
13. And all this scene when Mikuriya said Koshiyama he want him to participate in quiz bowl is omg so awkward, funny and super sweet. Like hahha look at this tsun, he wasn’t even at first able to say this looking at his face. :D(were you blushing?)  Dork. Plus he can use word revenge but haha he didn’t even had tone that fit to revenge talk. He was just like dork  and all his talk was more like “Koshiyama! I am fascinated by you! Please do quiz bowl with me!”. :D sorry but it really looked at this. Haha ;). (and see Shiki you were so worried that he will be angry... yet he just want to quiz bowl with you so much Hahhaha :))
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mikoriya is so passionate about this and the fact scenery is so romantic it makes this even symbolic ;) hahah. Mikuriya did you just confessed your feelings to boy you just met and fell deeply in love? :D
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-and then he left. :D I’m pretty sure because he was all embarrassed and blushed after saying all of this. :D
Tumblr media
- and ah it is not that only he was full of feels after this talk. Look at Koshiyama baby. Ball full of all feels. I mean for a moment he even looked as shoujo protagonist. :D
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thank you so much for reading! :D
