yo dude i was really curious and i just read yr primal fear fic, just wanted to say that your writing is genuinely so impressive.. not a lot of people could take a prompt like this and actually give it so much substance, your stuff shows such a deep level of understanding of the media ur working with +intuitiveness.. like characterizing shit well from 90s movies is crazy hard and u like immediately got how to write an in-character martin vail so if u can do that u can do any thing im like blown away 🙈 cant wait to see what u do in the future with yr original stuff, youre a beast with the pen ✍️✍️

I feel like I understand the psyche pretty well but there's so much just general milieu that's easy to just... not even realize is relevant. Of course it helps that most of my readers are also not particularly familiar with the 90s lmao but. Idk I try to keep that post-fall of the soviet union pre-9/11 immense nihilism in mind. Fortunately I have some friends who have a pretty strong lock on the vibe for one reason or another who help too— I assume they'd tell me if it was a 'he would not fucking say that' situation haha. It's funny wrt Martin Vail because I do think I did him pretty passably.. I don't always mesh into characters well per se; like for Tyler, I think I understand him pretty well but it's still tricky to figure out how to actually word what he says — I'm tempted to outsource to @a-forsteri who has a goddamn LOCK on it... we should collab, bestie... but regardless yeah Vail was an interesting one for sure. I'm gonna be frank, Eddie just does not give me the impression that he was bullied all that much in high school to me. Especially as he got older, like he was the school drug dealer, he was not getting beat up by the same jocks who were going to be buying from him later that week. It just doesn't make sense to me!

I'm not saying he was never bullied at all (personally I think he was probably bullied by the people in his grade in like middle school, but leant more into the satanic image by the time he got to high school (which is when the satanic panic wouldve been starting) and people became more afraid to mess with him or it stopped when BS started dealing) or that people can't headcanon and project onto pm. It's fandom, do what you want lol. I've just gotten to the point where fics lose me whenever they claim Tommy/Steve/Jason was going around beating the shit out of him or shoving him in the halls every week or the like. Eddie just does not give the impression that he is scared of the jocks normally. He looks down on them and thinks he's better than them! He taunts them openly in front of everyone and pontificates on table tops.

I think if you take it in that context too, it makes the town turning on him more sinister? Like obviously, satanic panic was only growing at that point, and it was within the last year or two they started pointing at metal and D&D as recruiting centers for satanic cults. (Eddie also like an asshole is walking around with a satanic symbol on his jacket - peak edgy teen in the middle of a moral outcry.) But while people might've been afraid of him, and most definitely talked about him behind his back, that's worlds away from mob violence. The change was startling, even if Eddie might be able to see it on the horizon.

Idk to me that's more of what the hunt the freak line was about. The knowledge that they could turn on you and would if you gave them a reason (or if you want to go with the Eddie is closeted interpretation - if he got outed). I think he probably has been called the freak for a while but honestly I think he's proud of it at this point.

Obviously all of this is up to interpretation, I guess I've just gotten to the point where a lot of the popular fanon interpretation doesn't feel like Eddie to me anymore

I was thinking back to the Halloween Event in TWST and that moment where Ace yells at Malleus for kidnapping Yuu (and other other students, he guesses) and IDK, maybe it's just how I look at Malleus' face and tone, but I could just picture him looking at Ace and thinking "Ah yes. He shall make a fine Queensguard for when I marry the Prefect"

I think you might be the only person who saw that scene and saw something other than aceyuu and o7 props for that know what you like and make everything about it, that's what I say!

I did sort of tear my hair out about this for a bit because my initial reaction was to say "I don't think Briar Valley recruits from outside countries" but that's not really true. I seem to remember that Sebek's grandpa isn't originally from Briar Valley, he's from the Sunset Savannah but he is still a fae so maybe they only make exceptions for other fae? Either way I can't really see Ace accepting a body guard position, he'd probably find it too boring ha. And I don't think Malleus would think to offer that since he would much rather leave guarding his spouse to Silver and Sebek. Lilia guarded both his parents after all, it just makes sense for him to trust his guards with his spouse too. His friends have more than proved themselves capable of such an honor.

I think the scene showed how much Malleus likes being treated like a person. He put Ace's friend in danger and Ace is chewing him out like he would anyone else, and it's someone Malleus cares about too so he's extra appreciative! It's good to know the people you care about have people around them who do too. He might not think to hire him on as a guard, but I could absolutely see him giving Ace and Deuce honorary titles as blessings because of how much he appreciates all they did for Yuu while they were at school. It is part of his role as Briar Valley's king to bestow gifts after all.

Now historical fantasy au Ace as an actual card soldier and Queensguard to Royal Riddle? That I can see.
