Design Proposal for Folir Richter - work by @mvrdv @mvrdvfrance Co-architect: Architecture Environnement, Montpellier, France --- "⁠How can we design vertical living to combine individual preferences and a collective, interactive neighbourhood atmosphere? Our proposal for Folie Richter is part of a process of innovation in housing and quality of life, where the individuality of each unit provides greater freedom in housing choices while preserving a sense of inclusiveness and community. Since the 18th Century, the follies of Montpellier have been markers for the architectural history of the city. The Follies helped to add new ways of living, new features, and new programs in the city, giving it a significant value and broadening its appeal for both residents and visitors. What Follie should be built in the 21st Century? A series of neighbourhoods is imagined: patio homes, houses on the street, collective houses with communal areas, and garden houses. The overall result is a vertical village. Breaks between volumes bring in natural light and views which sometimes lead to collective terraces. The different neighbourhoods are articulated in different colours ensuring that each programme is visually enhanced and easily identified. #repost • @mvrdv How can we create a vibrant neighbourhood that is in the tradition of the European city, but at the same time an update of it: historic, mixed and intimate, light, green, and dense? Our project Bastide Niel is a masterplan proposal to transform 35ha of former barracks and railyards in the centre of Bordeaux is an unprecedented opportunity to contribute to European urbanism.⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ The site, near the Garonne River, lies within walking distance of the UNESCO-listed historic centre of Bordeaux and was previously occupied by warehouses, rail embankments, and redundant barracks. Through careful retention and renovation of the existing buildings, along with controlled new development, a district will be created that integrates a wide variety of functions including housing along with a variety of public and cultural facilities.⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ Buildings in Bastide Niel must be designed with their impact upon the environment in mind. The masterplan stipulates that buildings in the neighbourhood should be light colours, reflecting sunlight and reducing the urban heat island effect; they should integrate solar panels and greenery into their roofs and loggias; and they should use wood construction whenever possible, minimising the carbon emissions of construction. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ The 144 plots will host buildings from a diversity of architectural practices, mixing the work of local, national, and international designers. Our project Ilot de l’Octroi is a residential development with multi-level curved façades that take inspiration from rock formations – playing with geometry, colours, and materials!⁠⁠ 🌿🪨 ⁠⁠ The project is part of a shift in emphasis from the centre of Rennes to the city’s outer areas, connected by the pedestrianised Mail François Mitterrand. This move from a rural to urban context has meant denser developments occurring at the edges, to prevent encroachment onto the countryside.⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ The design makes the river its focal point, with all apartments possessing outdoor spaces - a mix of balconies facing the waterfront, loggias, and terraces. Trees and greenery from the public square connect upwards to the green rooftops following the façades. In our recently inaugurated project Ilot Queyries, we imagined a courtyard acting as a lush oasis for the urban dwellers! ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ At 5,200m2, the courtyard takes on a park-like quality, with a green landscape of 83 alder and birch trees and a variety of grasses. Located one storey above ground level, it also hides the residents’ parking below.⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ The design of the building emphasises this important space: while the project’s street-facing façades present a muted, cream-coloured palette that blends in with the surroundings, the courtyard-facing façades are finished in a bright red textured stucco. #repost • @mvrdv #NewProject - We are so happy with the intimate streetscapes and expansive green space in our design for Ilot Queyries! 🌿🚶🏽‍♀️☀️⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ Located to the east of the River Garonne, across from Bordeaux’s UNESCO World Heritage historic centre, Ilot Queyries is a courtyard apartment building providing 282 homes – including 128 for social housing – as well as parking, commercial space, and a rooftop restaurant.⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ The project is a test-bed for the principles of the neighbouring masterplan we designed, Bastide-Niel, which aims to combine the virtues of Bordeaux’s UNESCO World Heritage historic city – intimacy, surprise, and liveliness – with the density, ecology, light, and comfort of the modern city.⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ So for Ilot Queyries we used the same design features as the Bastide-Niel masterplan: the building fills the site to its boundaries, lending an intimate feeling to the streetscape, while the roofs are arranged into carefully calibrated slopes to provide maximum ventilation, daylight, and sun.⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ And at the heart of this large building (almost 200m long!) is a courtyard of 5,200m2, which provides a park-like space for the residents. La Vallée - Designed by @mvrdv @mvrdvfrance Co-architect: Advento⁠ Visualization by @atelierkreaction --- Their project La Vallée Verte is a residential project made up of three buildings on a triangular plot. On the street side, the façades and roofs are smooth, following shapes based on daylighting requirements. In contrast, at the centre of the site the three blocks seemed to have to been hollowed out. Like an excavation, this “crater” forms an inner courtyard revealing private terraces, lined with a wide variety of tree pots and vegetation. The project replicates a natural valley landscape, with different plants at different levels, to enable a diversity of species. These green havens act as micro-lungs for the city, improving air quality and regulating local temperatures; they stimulate biodiversity, capture carbon, and prepare cities for a greener future! We've created these green havens through a number of mixed-use and residential projects, such as Ilot de l'Octroi, where the green environment of the riverfront extends up the project's balconies. Or there's Valley, where the building's rugged stone terraces are covered in vegetation, creating a green public route over the building's lower levels. For La Serre, a stacked "micro-village" of apartments creates shared spaces that are filled with plants; while in Green Villa a gridded “rack” system covers the building’s entire exterior in plants, giving residents lush green balconies. #Repost • @mvrdv How can we bring people closer to nature when they are living and working in tall buildings? Well, we can bring the nature to them! In yesterday's post we talked about adding openness and porosity to #Skyscrapers and #HighRise buidlings. The second method we often use in our tall projects is to add some green! By creating more inhabitable surfaces with cantilevers, ledges, setbacks, and balconies, we create spaces which can host plants, shrubs, and even trees. These contribute to biodiversity and improving microclimate, but more importantly they benefit occupants' quality of life, allowing a green “suburban” lifestyle in the centre of the city. We have been investigating how to do this for 20 years, ever since we put a forest on the 3rd floor of the Expo 2000 Pavilion in Hannover.
