SERVERTALE ACT 2 Chapter 3: Hallways of the past

As promised, Melanie made some calls and got connected with a special unit called Magic User Task Force, or MUTF for short, which was an association made for any events with magic. Luckily, they claimed they'd have a plan for a situation like the current one for some time. It was quite simple actually, the mayor would speak with the monsters confidentially, and they would make sure than no one at the entrance had any dangerous weapons on them. Once the mayor and the king had their talk, they would start informing the humans about the monsters until monsters are not known as a threat any longer. The mayor informed Ne about the information and Ne delivered it to Asgore. It was then they all agreed to meet the day after at noon. Some time after making the deal, Ne requested Amy and Slasher to make sure the area is safe. Unfortunately for Slasher, he was stopped from his patrols, much to his surprise. He knows that Amy went to talk with Natalie, but he didn’t expect her at his door this soon. Half of his gear was still around the house, some of it even had blood stains. To be honest, even his suit had some blood, and he had some injuries. When he heard the doorbell, he quickly hid the most bloody gear and took off the jacket, before quickly leaving it in the washing machine. By the time he was done with that, he heard another doorbell. Slasher: I’m coming! For the finishing touch, he made sure to hide the blood soaked gauntlet as best as he could with the amount of time he had, which meant that he had left it in one of the drawers, since he didn’t have time to do conceal the gauntlet in a more secure place. He rushed to the door and opens it nervously. As soon as the door opens, he and Natalie look at each other, both worried. Slasher: Jeez, you don’t look so well. While that was logical from his point of view, he didn’t see someone filled with bruises, cuts and bullet wounds. Natalie: Are you serious? Did you look at yourself in the mirror? You look terrible! Slasher laughs nervously, before replying with "You should have seen the other guy, he’s gonna need a hand to get himself back together after the fight we had." Natalie sighs, still worried. Natalie: Just let me in, we need to talk. Slasher moves, giving her space to get in. Slasher: Now that doesn’t sound so good. Natalie entered the house, and she saw what Slasher couldn't hide in time. Even though Slasher cleaned up the bloody gear, ammo, knives and some other items were still visible. Natalie: Jesus, you use all of this, almost every day? Slasher: Basically, yes. Natalie: You know, the night after all of that happened, I hoped that when I would wake up the next day, that I would realize it was all a dream, a nightmare which wasn't true. But when I woke up, nothing changed. I could still recall every detail perfectly. I was the one who escaped the hill, and you were still yourself. You were still a killer. Slasher: And what did you think those soldiers were going to do to you? They chased you with swords! I was only trying to protect you! Natalie: But, couldn’t you just shoot them in the shoulder, or the leg to simply stop them? Slasher: Actually, shooting someone in the leg, especially above the knee can easily be fatal, and the shoulder can still be a risky area because of the nearby organs adding the fact that the bones could shatter and they would cause more injury, especially with my guns. Natalie: Still, I can’t believe you just kill your enemies mercilessly! Slasher: Not like I had a choice Natalie: What do you mean? Mike never killed anyone! Amy never killed anyone, what makes you different? Slasher: Uh, maybe the fact that I'm not like them. Amy can teleport, sneak past anyone or just constantly teleport around, while stunning everyone. Don’t get me started on Mike, the soldiers are nothing when compared to him. To be completely honest, the only scars he bears are the ones he made let himself receive while stopping others from getting some. Natalie: Well, I guess you’re right about that Slasher: Think of it this way, imagine that you are alone, dozens of enemies with guns run towards you. Every single one is targeting you with their intentions to kill. The winner will be the one who fires first. You know that you have to be faster than every single one of them to survive. Will you worry if some of them die, or will you make sure to get out there alive? Natalie had nothing to say. She knew that he was right, even when she considered that he went over the line, she still knew he didn’t have much of a choice to begin with. Just like he said, he can’t dodge bullets, or simply walk them off. Unlike the people he fights with, he is only a man with guns. No amount of equipment can change that, yet he was still dangerous. He never held back when full force was needed, he could be reckless. Slasher: Do you understand now? Natalie: I think I do. Since Slasher was obviously occupied, Ne and Amy had to get Kris to take his shift for the time being as they were constantly transferring from rooftop to rooftop, viewing and patrolling the streets that were close to the entrance of the village. Kris hadn't worked on the field often, so he was still getting accustomed to the role. Ne and Amy taught and demonstrated the basics to him. Luckily, for his first patrol, the city was pretty peaceful. There was nothing bigger than shoplifting, but stuff like that wasn't their problem. their task was to attend and handle the bigger problems, similar to those theу were patrolling and monitoring for now. They paused to rest and relax for a few on the rooftop of a building close by. Kris was somewhat out of breath as he caught up to Ne and Amy. Kris: How do you do this all the time? Amy: Practice. Ne: Skill. Kris: So, what? Are you saying that I have none of them? Ne: Well, no offense, but you're kinda bad at traveling on foot. Kris sits down to rest to catch his breath. Kris: Fair enough. Amy: To be fair, you just started this for the first time. Ne: Yeah, You’ll get the hang of it after some time. Kris: Was that pun intended? Ne: Of course it was. Amy sits down on the edge and asks Ne to join her, he willingly accepts and sits next to her, his hand on her shoulder. The air is filled with silence, except for the sound of the humming wind passing through their spirits. Amy takes off her mask and hood to enjoy the feeling of the gentle breeze on her face. She leans her head on Ne’s shoulder, as they look down on the streets beneath them as the wind blew through her purple dyed hair. After some time of silence, Kris speaks up. Kris: So, you two are now in a relationship, right? Kris caught Ne off guard, so it took a few seconds for him to answer. Ne: ...I think so. Amy: Yup, we are. Kris: Did you know before that battle? Amy: Kinda. We both assumed, but we weren’t sure. Especially him. Ne shrugs. Ne: What can I say, I didn’t expect you to be interested. Amy Laughs and hugs him. Amy: And that is the silliest thing you ever did. Kris: Come on, I suggest we do one last circle before it starts getting dark. Sans and Scriptina had entered the True Lab in the Computerworld. They yearned for Papyrus to accompany them, but he wanted to pay Gaster a visit, so Scriptina chose to have the entryway to the void opened for him. Before anything else, they had to review the lab to know if it was fully operational and safe. They decided to wander through the corridors, checking the condition and quality of the vicinity. Sans: looks like she didn't care about keeping the place clean. Scriptina: Probably too busy with trying to make herself famous. Sans ignored Scriptina’s salty comments as he kept writing the things down that needed repairs to a list in his personal console. Firstly, the elevator had to be repaired to insure a safer route between the public and the True Lab. Luckily for them, the two could use their abilities to better steer and drag the elevator as to make a smooth landing. They noticed that some of the lights were not working like normal, that they kept flickering rapidly. As they started to trot throughout the long, seemingly endless hallway, the entry screens on the wall powered on, showing entries from past events and failed experiments that took place in the True Lab. Sans: so many memories. it's just like before.  Scriptina: We’re lucky that they are still in good condition. As they reach the lobby, they notice that the lights weren’t the only things that were faulty. Sans used his console to power on all the generators at once. As he did, Scriptina noticed a piece of paper on the ground and scooped it up. Scriptina: What’s this? Sans walks to Scriptina and looks at the parchment. Sans: a note from Alphys. she obviously left it for Frisk when she arrived here. Scriptina sighs, annoyed at the fact that the note was likely for Frisk from Alphys. Scriptina: Can’t even do her own work. Before they progressed onward to explore the other rooms, they began in the left hallway and ended up in the first room. While the metallic parts of the beds were quite rusty and one of the sinks wasn't functioning correctly, everything else seemed to operate well. They continue on to the next room as they quickly read the screens on the metal walls, reminding themselves of the projects that happened way before. Scriptina: No wonder it didn’t work, she never tested the sensitivity and vulnerability of determination. All those lives, ruined for nothing and gone forever! Sans: at least they’re with their families now. Scriptina: But can you imagine how difficult that is? To have your loved ones fused with your neighbors… Having to share them. It’s not right. Sans: i know, but everyone's happy now. Luckily, all of the beds were in perfect condition. After checking the beds, both of them went to the east room. Somehow, all of the golden flowers were still healthy. Scriptina: It seems that the determination halted them from rotting. Sans: yeah, but it still didn’t change any other part of their code. they’re still not compatible with any of the souls. asriel was lucky that he got a second chance. Scriptina looked down, recollecting and remembering some parts of her past, before responding Scriptina: Call his current condition luck or whatever you'd please, we need to find a way to revive him as well. Sans: we’ll do that as soon as we finish checking the area. The fan room was next on their list. Luckily, it was working properly, so they had no reason to inspect that room. As they went to the other side of the hallway, Sans took note of the cracked and misshaped walls, lined with what seemed to be dust and glitched pieces. Scriptina: Is that really important? Sans: well, why not, I mean, we’re here to search for things that need repair. Scriptina: Good point. They skipped the TV room, since it wasn’t needed for what their intentions were. After passing the determination extractor, they went to the west room. Scriptina: What did she use the fridges for? Did she live here or something? Sans: who knows. it’s possible, judging by all the things the lab has. The last room on their list was the one with the main generator that powered the True Lab entirely. When they checked it, they saw that it was working just fine, but the power surging through it was incredibly unstable. It could shut down again, causing the elevator to departure at sudden times. Sans used the console to fix each little glitch and problem the generator and all of the other items on his list had. Sans: to be honest, it was probably way harder for her to keep the place running when she needed to fix everything by hand. Scriptina: And that’s why we never should have left the lab in the first place! Sans: well, you remember how we all were when all of it happened. i didn’t want to be anywhere close to that place, papyrus was more interested in puzzles anyways and you… Just then, Sans realized that he didn’t know the reason as to why Scriptina left without a trace.  Sans: actually, why didn’t you want to stay? Scriptina: I thought that I wasn’t good enough to lead the lab on my own, while both of you already forgot about me. Obviously, I didn’t know that my decision would lead to a far worse situation like this one. Scriptina sighs, wishing not to have the rest of the conversation. Scriptina: Let us check the extractor and go tell Frisk that we’re done. Sans: fine by me. As Scriptina suggested, they went to the extractor room. Sans used the console, attempting to turn it on. The extractor activated easily as Sans got a full report on his console, saying that the extractor is fully functional. Sans: great! everything we need is working. Scriptina: Shall we go back to the village to inform Frisk then? Sans: yup. i bet she’ll be happy to hear the news. Scriptina: We should tell Asriel and Chara as well. Sans: thanks for reminding me. shortcut? Scriptina: Sure. Sans opens up a portal to the flowerbed room. They go through the portal and see Flowey and Chara on the other end. Flowey: Howdy! Chara: What are you two doing here? Sans: we decided to check the lab to make sure if everything’s working properly. Chara: And? What does it look like? Sans opens the console and shows the list he made, while Scriptina explains them what they did. Scriptina: There are some small damages, but all of the equipment needed for our attempt is working perfectly. The only things that need repairs are some of the beds and other objects like that, but we need none of those. Chara: That’s great! Flowey: What’s going on at your place? Do the humans know about you? Sans: for now, only a few, but pretty soon, everyone else is gonna know as well. Chara: Are you sure that’s a good idea? I mean, my race isn’t known for being peaceful and understanding. Scriptina: Don’t worry. Mike found some connections and he’s bringing in people who had plans for situations like this. They’re going to arrange a meeting with Asgore tomorrow to suggest the best way for us to introduce ourselves to the city. Flowey: That sounds like it could work. Sans: don’t worry, bud. it will. now, if you’ll excuse us, we need to head back to the village to tell frisk about this. Chara: Alright. Where’s Papyrus though? He hasn’t visited us in a while. Sans: he wanted to pay Gaster a visit. Chara: Oh, okay.... Chara said, sounding a bit sad since she was longing to see Papyrus again. Scriptina: Don’t worry, next time, he’ll be here as well. Flowey: Alright then. Sans opens another shortcut to the void's entrance in Datafall. Scriptina: See you soon! Flowey: Okay. Sans and Scriptina enter through the portal as it closed behind them. Back inside in their house in the village, Toriel was arranging things on the dining table for the meal as Frisk helped her with the work. Frisk was explaining what was going to happen tomorrow, since Toriel wasn’t fully informed at this time. Toriel: So, you are saying that Asgore is going to talk with a human about their plan of us becoming public? Frisk: As much as I heard. I don’t know much, but I know that it’s gonna happen tomorrow at noon and that there are going to be experienced people at the meeting. Toriel: How did we even get in contact with them? Frisk: We didn’t, Mike did. He did some research and that was his solution. Toriel seemed gave a worried expression, but not because of the meeting. Toriel: That is what I have wanted to talk with you about as well. Frisk looks at her questionably. Toriel: I know that Mike and his friends are the reason that we are free, and I am grateful to them for that… But their look… Their equipment… Are you sure that it is safe to have them as such close allies? Frisk: Of course I am. They might look like they are dangerous, but trust me, they’re good. Toriel: How can you be so sure? Frisk: Because I have known Mike for a long time. I know that he is trying to help us. He will always fight to protect the ones who need the rescue. Toriel: But what if we encounter a problem that can’t be solved with violence? Frisk: Then he will adapt. Trust me, he’s good at that. Toriel: Fine. If you claim that he means well, I will trust you. Frisk: Thank you. Toriel: While we are talking over questionable subjects, where do Sans and Scriptina keep going off to? They go to the portal often, but they never want to tell me as to why. Frisk knew what they were doing, but she also remembered that they asked her to keep quiet. She knew that it was still early to say anything about the situation. Even though Toriel technically still wasn’t the queen, she is still worried about everything that Asgore does. The last thing Toriel needs is to think of her child as well. Frisk: I don’t know. You know how Sans is. He likes to take his mind off things. Toriel: But his duty as the code keeper has been let go ever since we exited the Computerworld. He is now only a judge, what is there to worry about? Frisk: You’ll have to ask him that yourself, sorry. Toriel: Still, that doesn’t explain why Scriptina is going with him. Frisk: Maybe they have some unfinished business from before. I mean, Sans did find out about her only a few days ago. Toriel: That is true… I truly hope that all of this is over soon. Frisk: It will. Toriel remembered that she needs to put the clothes in the washing machine. Toriel: Could you please wash the dishes for me, child? I need to do another chore in the meanwhile. Frisk: Sure. Toriel never saw her in anything else except the dark blue cloak and some old black clothes. She didn’t even wear shoes. When Toriel opened their closet, she spotted the clothing Sans and Papyrus wear… And something else. She saw Scriptina’s cloak from the time she was the judge.
