It has been said that my family has the energy of the Addams Family, just replace gothic with geeky. The same is true with my parents, down to the multilingual flirting, with Ada's second language Hungarian and Maman's French. And somehow it took me almost 24y to realize that Ada does not call Maman 'dragon' but "drágám" which means 'darling'. I genuinely thought whenever Ada was dramatically fawning over Maman and proclaiming "szeretlek drágám" he was saying "l love you dragon" and I just accepted it.

Headcanon: Alastor doesn't like speaking French unless he's close to everyone in earshot. He isn't fluent, and he's heard Angel speak fluent Italian a few times and he's heard Husk speak multiple languages fluently, so the fact that he isn't fluent in French is an insecurity of his and he's afraid of being teased or mocked for it.
Additional headcanon, apparently both Husk and Angel are fluent in Italian. They've had multiple conversations in Italian, much to the irritation of everyone else who doesn't speak Italian lol

hi!!! for wbw, if youve thought about this, how does language work in your world? are there many different languages on asheva or just a common tongue? how about orias and niv, does being old as shit affect their language?
Hello hello! Thank you for your patience.
Tumblr media
There are in fact different languages in Asheva! For simplicity sake, I have them divided regionally, so a distinct language for every distinct region.
Tumblr media
But just like language in the real world, settlements will have their own dialects that may evolve into another language with time.
In terms of how that affects characters like Orias and Niv-- while they are very old beings, they have regularly lived among others since they've been trapped in the Trigala. As such, they would learn what the common language is in the region and forget their "mother tongue".
Though I do think it's very funny that two of the oldest, non-Rane characters are also the only ones not multilingual.

Something I've been thinking about is in shows when they have two characters that are bi/multi lingual and speak the same languages is they still ONLY speak in English together and use like 1 or 2 words in whatever other language(s) just like when they're talking to other characters on the show that only speak one language. And I think it should be different, for example my grandma speaks a bunch of different languages but she and a local shop owner both speak three of the same languages and whenever they're talking together they just bounce around between all three languages. Like it's fluid and they aren't even thinking about what language they're actually speaking in they're just talking and their words kinda shift around naturally depending on what they're trying to say and express. I think they should also do this for TV shows and movies and stuff which I can't say I've really seen

One thing about Agnes: she is the only person I've ever encountered who uses the word "interlocutor" as often as I do in casual conversation. Also in essays and blog posts. It's an odd habit and I do it as a holdover calque from Russian (собеседник) and it always struck me as a bilingual or ESL quirk so it's funny to hear/read it in someone else's idiom

I think I found out why I struggle so much with Czech when I understand Polish just fine (well not just fine but miles better than Czech with a lot less effort). Basically German marks focus by using stress. Something that Czech very notably does not do and in general I feel like Czech doesn't have a whole lot of stress going on above the level of morphology. And I mean yeah Polish also uses word order to mark focus just like any respectable Slavic language does but also there's a lot more going on there with prosodic stress. And I just need a stress marker to let me know what to part of the sentence I should pay attention to. And like I mean I could probably get by without it if I spoke the language better but guess what?

It's always the people who write and speak beautifully who apologize after saying the most beautiful words to ever word, "Apologies, English isn't my first language."
Like they'll speak and write better than native speakers. Especially here in the states.
Like don't apologize, your literally better than everyone else in the room. They don't know half the words you just said, and it's the only language they've ever known. You're bilingual, yeah? No? Tri- This is your Fifth language, that you speak fluently?
