Shooting ALAN

Alan was a short that evolved and developed quite a lot; originally set in the city witnessing a murder by postal to a woodland nomad witnessing a murder by knife point. 

It was the first real shoot I had used my newly acquired Mövi M5 on - it was a bit of a learning curve to say the least! You really need two people as operators because having someone right next to you with the stand is great or when setting up the stiffness and what not its great having someone holding the unit with camera, monitor....etc on it and yourself on the Android tablet adjusting the minute settings over bluetooth. 

We used my C100 + Ninja Blade shot on Prores HQ for this shoot because we had our colourist Ollie Kenchington grading it for us in Davinci Resolve and wanted the highest data rate we could give him.

Originally we wanted to shoot in Leigh Woods in North Somerset/Bristol but we received a phonecall after applying for the permit from the police communications officer who categorically stated that it would not be happening within a weeks time even though it was a very delicate scene to deal with. This lead us to option two - find somewhere else and shoot it without permissions and that is exactly what we did do.

After we had found a location we were happy with, the Longleat woods to be precise which runs along side the safari park. We then encountered our second big issue which was at 6am on the first day of shooting - our runner/driver Mike Griffith had gone to pick up our ‘Jogger’ but no response from door knocking, phone calling and shouting at the actor so we asked Mike and he was more that up for the task and did an excellent job in the cold day.

No Breath Play Film Shoot - Day 1

Our incredible cast and crew of No Breath Play came together on day one of the short film shoot under the direction of Stacey Ashworth, covering off a multitude of demanding scenes. Lead actress Julia Dillon-Davis braved the extreme cold for a couple exterior shots, while make-up artist Tasha Winters established a few of the main character's looks for the remainder of the shoot.

Three quarters of the film was shot on the MoVI camera stabiliser by Director of Photography Scott Amos for a smooth hand-held inertia, while the rest of the film was shot on sticks and a camera dolly. Key grip Adam Andrusiak was on hand to slate every shot and assist Gaffer/Executive Producer Daniel Hogg execute the film's naturalistic lighting look.
