Established in 1841, Mount Elliott Cemetery (Catholic) is the oldest of the three cemeteries which comprises the Eastside Historic Cemetery District, bounded by Mt. Elliott Avenue, Lafayette Street & Waterloo Street. The other two are Elmwood (originally Protestant, now non-denominational) and Lafayette (Jewish). It was named in honor of Robert T. Elliott. Elliott was a judge, architect and member of the committee that helped create what would become Mount Elliott Cemetery. Tragically, shortly after the cemetery was founded, Elliott was killed in a construction accident. He would become the cemetery's first internment. Other notable burials include the remains from the cemetery at Ste. Anne's de Detroit, relocated in 1869, including those of Col. Jean-François Hamtramck. About a century later, his remains were again relocated, this time to a location on Joseph Campau Street, in the city that bears his name. Mayor Jerome Cavanaugh is also buried here. Mount Elliott is the final resting place of many of Detroit's leading families, names like Beaubien, Campau, Cicotte and Palms. The entrance to Mount Elliott Cemetery was designed and built by Walter Schweikart in 1882. Schweikart, a stone mason, was responsible for the gargoyles on the exterior of St. John's Episcopal Church downtown. Mount Elliott is also home of the Firemen's Fund Monument, a special area dedicated to those who gave their lives to serving the community. Every Memorial Day, a solemn remembrance ceremony takes place. #Detroit #Eastside #MountElliottCemetery #Gatehouse #GothicRevival #MtElliottStreet #archi_ologie #BrickStory #RawDetroit #PureMichigan #PureMittigan #MotorCityShooters #PureDetroit313 #DepictTheD #VisitDetroit #Michiganders #ThisPlaceMatters #ThisPlaceMattersDetroit #MichiganPlacesMatter (at Mt Elliot Cemetery) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjxnoNfOGMl/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
