A Brief Guide to Yachts
This is a continuation to my cultural education segment (aka my rich bitch guide).
The yacht is an invention of the 14th century Dutch. The Dutch used small, fast boats for chasing smugglers, pirates and criminals. Rich ship owners and merchants began using these small “jaghts” to sail out to celebrate their returning merchant ships.
The first yacht club in the world, called the Cork Water Club, was established in Ireland in 1720.
Some famous clubs include:
USA:
1. Annapolis Yacht Club: Surrounding the Spa Creek Bridge in Annapolis, the Club boasts over 75 wet slips and dry dockage. The club began in 1886 as an informal canoe club, and today has 1600 regular members active in social, racing, and cruising programs
2. Chicago Yacht Club: Founded in 1875, Chicago Yacht Club is one of the oldest and most respected yacht clubs in the world. The Club is home to more than 1,400 members, including a winning America’s Cup skipper, and Olympic medalists.
Italy:
1. Circolo Canottieri Aniene
2. Circolo degli Esteri
3. Compagnia della Vela
Canada:
1. Royal Canadian Yacht Club
2. Royal Vancouver Yacht Club
Yachts are most active in the summer months (May- August in the northern hemisphere) or the winter months. many yacht owners decide to keep the maximum number of guests onboard to 12 (plus crew) for chartering.
Different types of yachts:
Sailing Yacht: a yacht mainly propelled via wind and sails
Motor Yacht: a yacht propelled via one or more motors
Gulet Yacht: a hybrid yacht with both sails and motors
Open Yacht, Cruiser, Cabin Cruiser, Express Cruiser: an otherwise uncategorized standard yacht for cruising and entertaining
Luxury Yacht: a yacht that includes high-end finishes and features and the latest in modern performance technology. The term ‘luxury’ can precede any type of yacht, i.e. “luxury motor yacht”, “luxury sailing yacht”, etc.
Sports Yacht: a yacht geared towards fishing, water sports, or cruising with a sleeker design and more powerful motor for faster cruising speeds.
Catamaran Yacht: a yacht with two hulls (pontoons) often made of fiberglass that can be used in shallow waters.
The most popular destinations:
1. Monaco
2. The French Riviera
3. Greece
4. U.S. Virgin Islands
5. Palm Beach, Florida
6. Costa Smeralda, Italy
7. St. George’s Parish, Bermuda
8. Newport, Rhode Island
9. Nantucket, Massachusetts
10. Greater Victoria, Vancouver Island

Football club owner Shahid Khan's 95 metre Lürssen Kismet was delivered in 2014. On match days, a four-metre silver statue of a jaguar, its paw resting on a football helmet, graces the bow. Elsewhere, its sizeable foredeck has enough space for Khan's beloved football team, the Jacksonville Jaguars, to stage a practice.
Tumblr media
The 70 metre Feadship superyacht Joy features a deck that's wide enough to enjoy a tandem jog around. This yacht is all about exterior living, which includes making use of these ample decks with some great sporting facilities. A basketball and badminton court is set all the way forward on the owner's deck. This is complemented by her large gym and dedicated spa. All of this adds up to make Joy an ideal choice for those interested in a yacht with ample fitness, wellness and sporting amenities.

Yacht Charter Market Will be Worth US$25.53 Bn by 2027
The global yacht charter market is driven by an upsurge in leisure activities as consumers across demographics discover the pleasure of yachting to exotic locations. Charter yachts are immensely popular as they rival the best that luxury hotels have to offer with the added advantage of complete seclusion as any tourists can travel to a waterbody of their choice. Tourists can visit several locations in a single trip and avoid the inconvenience of bumper-to-bumper traffic or lengthy waits at airport departure lounges, making yacht charters extremely appealing for those pressed for time or willing to pay for a premium experience.
As per Fairfield Market Research, the global yacht charter market is on track to register an impressive CAGR of 22.85% from 2021 to 2027.
For More Industry Insight Read: https://www.fairfieldmarketresearch.com/report/yacht-charter-market
Government Initiatives to Play Major Role in Popularizing Yacht Charters
National governments are putting various initiatives in place to boost local tourism and yacht charters are vital in this. The govt. of Indonesia has excluded the Clearance and Approval for Indonesian Territory (CAIT) from its marine tourism policy. This resulted in a profit of $600 million in 2019 alone.
Yacht Charter Companies Entering Into Celebrity Partnerships to Raise Awareness
Yacht charter companies are seeking out alliances with social media influencers to tap previously undeserved millennial or Gen Z audiences. Celebrities are chartering yachts for private getaways and documenting their experiences on social media, exponentially raising awareness among younger clientele who have the disposable income to indulge in luxuries such as charter yachts.
Motor Yachts Most Popular in the Yacht Charter Market Due to Their Design and Range
The motor yacht segment is anticipated to race ahead of other segments in the yacht charter market as it can cover maximum distances in the shortest timeframe. The shallow design of motor yachts allows them to easily enter narrow passages and coastlines, boosting their demand amongst end-users. Motor yachts have a larger deck space than other options in the yacht charter market, allowing tourists to be in the lap of luxury while travelling the high seas.
Wealthy Europeans to Continue Chartering Yachts to Travel to Unexplored Locations
Europe comprised almost half of the global yacht charter market with a share of 48% in 2020 and this is likely to continue for the forecast period. Europe has long been a highly sought-after tourist destination and Mediterranean nations such as Turkey and Italy will propel demand going forwad. Several companies on the continent already offer a combination of online yacht charter bookings with flights to provide a complete package to travellers.
The presence of a significant high-net-worth (HNI) population has resulted in a large number of watercraft licenses issued here to cater to the wealthy clientele’s discerning taste. In 2017, the European Commission stated that 60,000 yachts in European waters generate revenue of Euro 6 billion annually. Nonetheless, the highest growth rate of 24% is predicted to be in the dynamic Asia Pacific region as robust economic growth leads to a spike in HNIs, especially in Southeast Asia.
Companies Looking at Both Organic and Inorganic Growth in the Yacht Charter Market
Companies in the yacht charter market are adopting different strategies including mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, and collaborations to strengthen their competitive position. Companies studied in this report on the yacht charter market are Mertello Fairline Yacht, Thai Charters, Dream Yacht Charter, Fraser Yacht, Charter Yachts Australia, Boatbound Inc., CharterWorld LLP, Incrediblue Ltd., Burgess, Boat International Media Ltd., Simpson Marine, Northrop & Johnson, and Sailing Thailand Island Cruises Co., Ltd.

In the same year, rival Princess Yachts launched six models developed through its GBP 100 million investment programme from 2015. Other companies such as Click&Boat and Marine Max Group have also chosen an acquisition strategy to solidify their presence in the yacht charter market.

The global yacht charter market is experiencing remarkable growth, driven by an upswing in leisure activities and the growing popularity of outdoor vacations. Malaysia, in particular, is witnessing a surge in demand for yacht charters as more people seek unique and luxurious experiences. According to industry projections, the global yacht charter market is expected to rise at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 22.85% from 2021 to 2027.

Yacht charters provide an unparalleled vacation experience that rivals that of a five-star hotel. With the ability to visit multiple locations in one trip and the convenience of onboard amenities, chartering a yacht eliminates the inconveniences associated with road or air travel. One of the unique selling points of yacht charters is the opportunity to dine in the picturesque surroundings of secluded bays and alcoves, offering a truly unforgettable experience.
The growing demand for yacht charters can be attributed to the commodification of luxury and the influence of social media. Service providers in the global yacht charter market are investing in creating high-end experiences for events such as birthdays and weekend getaways, attracting a younger demographic seeking to celebrate and gain unique experiences. Furthermore, government initiatives to encourage tourism, such as the refurbishment of marine tourism policies, are expected to stimulate the demand for yacht charters.
Despite the market's growth potential, the high cost associated with rentals and yacht maintenance remains a challenge. Rental costs reflect the expenses incurred in maintaining yachts, including routine refittings, engine and propulsion maintenance, which can amount to 10% of the yacht's value each year.
In terms of yacht types, motor yachts are expected to dominate the global yacht charter market. Their ability to cover larger distances in less time and navigate through shallow and narrow passages makes them highly sought after. Motor yachts also offer larger deck spaces and modern conveniences, which further propel their adoption.
Europe currently holds the largest share of the global yacht charter market, with a market share of nearly 48% in 2020. Countries such as Italy and Turkey are driving Europe's dominance, with an increasing number of tourists and a thriving yacht charter industry. However, Asia Pacific is expected to show significant growth in the coming years, driven by the rising number of high-net-worth individuals and increasing water activities, particularly in Southeast Asian countries.
The key players in the yacht charter market are continuously adapting their strategies to stay ahead. Collaborations, partnerships, joint ventures, mergers, and acquisitions are common strategies employed by industry players to drive growth and expand their market reach.
Some of the leading companies operating in the global yacht charter market include Fraser Yacht, Charter Yachts Australia, Boatbound Inc., CharterWorld LLP, Mertello Fairline Yacht, Thai Charters, Dream Yacht Charter, Incrediblue Ltd., Burgess, Boat International Media Ltd., Yachtico, Inc., Inter Yacht Charter, Nicholson Yachts, Simpson Marine, Northrop & Johnson, Sailing Thailand Island Cruises Co., Ltd., Yachting Company, Super Yacht Logistics, LLC., Yacht Charter Fleet, West Coast Marine Yacht Service Pvt Ltd., and Zizooboats GmbH.
As the global yacht charter market continues to flourish, Malaysia is set to capitalize on the growing fondness for sailing vacations, providing unparalleled experiences to those seeking luxury and adventure.

The 295-Foot Superyacht ‘Nero’
Superyacht fans around the world will instantly recognize Nero, the one-of-a-kind 295-footer that defines the term “modern classic.” First launched from Corsair Yachts in 2007, Nero was commissioned as a replica of the famed 300-foot Corsair IV owned by J.P. Morgan, which, when launched in 1930, was the world’s largest yacht.
British entrepreneur Neil Taylor loved the look of Corsair IV, but didn’t want the expense of restoring a vintage yacht—which would’ve been impossible with Corsair, since it had transitioned into a high-end cruise ship in Asia and eventually sank off the coast of Mexico. Instead, Taylor set about building a beautiful replica with a modern hull and interior.
Taylor actually established the Yantai Raffles Shipyard in China and hired 400 workers to build the yacht, which took nearly four years to complete. Two years after her delivery, she took Best Motor Yacht over 246 feet in the ShowBoats International Design Awards. The 1930s lookalike has since undergone two major refits, the latest just completed at San Giorgio del Porto in Genoa, Italy, to become an even more modern version of the original classic.
“Nero’s original build was fairly complex, so this refit was a great opportunity to technically upgrade her to the latest regulations,” Capt. Marcel Busse told Robb Report. “I’ve overseen numerous large refits on other boats, but this one takes the cake on many levels.”
The icing on that cake is the sundeck gym filled with Technogym equipment, including a Kinesis, treadmill, cross trainer and cardio bike. The area also has loose weights, yoga and Pilates equipment and, naturally, a certified physical trainer is part of the crew. A large Jacuzzi just steps away on the sundeck makes a perfect post-workout de-stressor.
“It used to be a ‘snug’ salon, but was underused,” says Busse. “Now it’s a fully-fledged gym with mirror-fronted storage lockers, fridge and TV. We’ve got a lot of space on the sun deck, which is monstrous compared to other boats of her size.” An 18.7-foot-long resistance pool is also located on the foredeck. The original gym has become a beauty salon and massage area.
Nero’s owners have been careful to preserve its inimitable historical look, including the long bowsprit and yellow funnel in the center. The sleek exterior lines that herald the golden age of yachting haven’t been touched, though her striking black hull and superstructure have received a fresh coat of paint. One key area that has been rehabbed: The air-conditioning system, which could spell the difference between heaven and misery on such a large yacht. “It’s key for a black-hulled boat like Nero,” says Busse.
Nero underwent a nine-month refit five years ago that included an updated interior by designer Laura Pomponi. “The owners spent a lot of time and money in 2016 upgrading the interior from dark wood to lime-washed wood with light-colored carpets,” says Busse. “We’ve maintained the lime wash and given the interior a Hamptons beach-house vibe.”
Pomponi was brought back for Nero’s most recent refit, giving the interior turquoise hues with blue and red accents. Handmade carpets run throughout, including the owner’s duplex suite with separate lounge, study and his-and-hers bathrooms. Most soft furnishings, fabrics and sofas have been replaced. In the sky lounge bar, a new maple-and-oak hardwood floor delivers a wow factor in what looks like a classic yacht.
For onboard entertainment, a newly installed and upgraded Icon Connect AV/IT system delivers the latest technology. A collection of water toys, including an inflatable slide, keep everyone happy in the water.
As part of the refit, Nero’s original custom 31-ft. limousine tender also got a makeover, with new paint and varnish, upholstery and interior lights to update her classic beauty.
Despite the classic look, Busse says the yacht has a modern hull that cruises well at 14 knots, while consuming the same amount of fuel most yachts her size would use at 12 knots. “She has two sets of stabilizers, giving her four in total, so she’s quite stable,” he says.
Nero is available for charter in the Med through Burgess Yachts, with weekly charters starting at about $590,000

A boat journey to the Aeolian Islands departing from Tropea, Calabria
Southern Italy is rich in history, traditions, and flavors as well as an enchanting sea that surrounds spectacular landscapes. Follow us on our itinerary in which we will “sail” the southern Tyrrhenian Sea with our sailboat, (or catamaran or yacht for hire, that’s your choice!) following the route to the Aeolian Islands. What are we waiting for?
CONTACT YBH FOR YOUR BOAT JOURNEY IN THE AEOLIAN ISLANDS
Where are located the Aeolian Islands?
We are in Italy and precisely in the south of this beautiful country. The Aeolian Islands are an archipelago of 7 islands located off the northeastern coast of Sicily. They can be reached by sea with a few hours of navigation both from Sicily itself and from nearby destinations such as Tropea, a Calabrian town from which we will start our journey.
Why choose Tropea as a starting point for the Aeolian Islands?
The choice to sail from Tropea and not from another of the ports from which it is possible to reach the Aeolian Islands is due to its excellent tourist port equipped with all services. Tropea is also a seaside town rich in history, places of interest, beaches, and the sea among the best in Italy.
VIEW ALL THE BOATS BASED IN TROPEA
Alternatively, if you wish to leave from a different port, other marinas are available along the north coast of nearby Sicily such as Milazzo, Capo D’Orlando, and Portorosa.
What is the saying about the Tropea marina for embarking on the Aeolian Islands?
The Port of Tropea is located near the historic city center and has about 600 berths that can accommodate megayachts up to 55 meters in length. Its depths range from 3 to 5 meters deep and all moorings are equipped with water and electricity supply columns.
The Marina is equipped with all the necessary services to make your stay comfortable and reception always available.
How to reach our home base, Tropea?
Tropea is easily accessible by car from the main cities of southern Italy, but the best way to get here is by air, landing at the international airport of Lamezia Terme, only about 60 km from the center of Tropea.
Any advice? For this kind of journey, rely on a serious and reliable rental company. Our choice is Your Boat Holiday, a safety in boat rental thanks to its professionalism.
So let’s start the itinerary that leads us to the discovery of Tropea and the Aeolian Islands in seven days:
Day 1 – Discovering Tropea
Once get in the city it is a must to spend at least one day there.
The historic Tropea center is located high up, about 70 meters above sea level, and dominates the sea which it overlooks. It is characterized by a maze of alleys, streets, churches, noble palaces, panoramic terraces, and incredible sea views that suddenly open up while walking. Among the many things to see, we would like to point out the Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Isola, located on a cliff overlooking the Aeolian Islands and the beach of Marina dell’Isola, made of white sand, overlooking the blue sea. From here you can reach the Grotta del Palombaro, which encloses a strip of sand lapped by turquoise waters at its feet.
Day 2 – From Tropea to Stromboli
We finally lift anchor and set sail for our first destination: the Stromboli island.
Stromboli is the most surprising of the Aeolian Islands, it is in fact a large active submerged volcano and is the ideal destination for excursions and trekking.
Famous for its explosive volcano that produces spectacular eruptions, earning it the nickname of the Mediterranean Lighthouse, Stromboli is located on the northernmost and easternmost island of the Aeolian archipelago. Suggestive and fascinating, Stromboli is nothing but the top of a large submerged active volcano where you can find wonderful black sand beaches, the most beautiful of the Aeolian Islands.
The main town is the homonyms Stromboli. It’s placed along the northeastern coast and is formed by the villages of San Vincenzo and San Bartolomeo, suggestive with their white houses set along the lower slopes of the volcanic crater. The second town, Ginostra, is a small village along the south-eastern coast that can only be reached by sea.
Day 3 – From Stromboli to Panarea
Panarea is the smallest and the lowest of the Aeolian islands. Just 3 kilometers long and 2 kilometers wide, Panarea is a chic and worldly island. It is in fact frequented by wealthy tourists and personalities of the international jet set, who very often anchor their yachts along its coast.
Panarea is known for its thermal muds, black beaches, and wonderful sea. In addition, its whitewashed houses with blue doors and windows are reminiscent of the charm of the Aegean Sea Greek islands.
The small port of San Pietro, Ditella, and Drautto are the only centers on the island.
Day 4 – From Panarea to Salina
Very different from the other Aeolian islands, Salina is located in the central part of the Archipelago together with Lipari and Vulcano and is second in size.
It is divided into three municipalities, Santa Marina, the main port of the island to the south, Malfa to the north, and Leni to the southwest.
Salina is a green island much loved by families thanks to its tranquility.
Among the most famous beaches, we find the black beach of Rinella, surmounted by caves carved into the rock, and the bay of Pollara located inside an ancient crater that has largely collapsed.
In Salina, excellent wines are produced including the unmissable Malvasia, a sweet and aromatic wine.
Day 5 – Day 6 – From Salina to Lipari
Lipari is the largest of the 7 islands that make up the Aeolian archipelago and from a tourist point of view, it is the most developed. For this reason, we decide to dedicate two whole days to it.
With its rugged coasts along which unique beaches, wide bays, and deep caves follow one another, Lipari seems made to be discovered by boat.
Its plateaus are ideal for trekking while its cliffs overlooking the sea offer splendid views. For these and other reasons, Lipari is a very popular destination for tourists from all over the world.
Lipari town is the main transport hub between the Aeolian Islands. The center is dotted with shops, restaurants, and bars while in the ancient Palazzo dei Vescovi, adjacent to the Cathedral of San Bartolomeo, there is an important Aeolian archaeological museum.
Spiaggia Bianca is the most famous island beach: located about 4 kilometers north of Lipari town and just beyond the village of Canneto, the beach owes its name to the spectacular expanse of pumice powder that makes it up.
Day 7 – From Lipari to Vulcano
Vulcano is one of the most evocative of the Aeolian Islands, with its fumaroles, black sand beaches, sulfurous muds, and jets of steam.
Among the main attractions are the thermal mud pool, the Sabbie Nere beach from where you can admire the splendid sunsets on the island of Filicudi, and the beach of Gelso.
Vulcano has a unique nature suitable for wonderful excursions. If you love walking, reach Capo Grillo, heading north, and admire astonishing views of the nearby islands while reaching the Fossa della Fucina, on top of the volcano, you will feel like you have set foot in a lunar landscape.
Finally, don’t miss the Grotta del Cavallo, with its extraordinary play of lights and colors.

Global Yacht Market: Insights and Forecast with Impact of COVID-19 (2022-2027)
According to a research report published by Azoth Analytics in July 2021, the Global Yacht Market was valued at USD 7.98 Billion in the year 2021. One of the most important factors impacting the yacht market is the increase in the UHNWI population. As the HNWI increases, the addressable customer base of the yacht industry also increases. This provides a strong tailwind for the manufacturers of yachts.
In addition to a growing customer base of UHNWIs, the size of their wealth is also expected to grow in the coming years. This would translate into an increasing average size of yachts or customers shifting towards models with a higher degree of customization and premium features. In both cases, this should support growth in the average selling price of yachts. Furthermore, the market has been growing over the past few years, due to factors such as growing demand for luxury tourism, rising construction of super yachts, a growing number of boat shows, favourable government initiatives, and increasing demand for yacht charter, etc.
The market is projected to grow at a fast pace during the forecast period, due to various latest trends such as customization and personalization, acute focus on eco-friendly and sustainable products, the internet of things, yachts run quieter due to tech advances, explorer yachts are continuing to rise in popularity, etc.
Based on the Vessel Type, the market is segmented into Super/ Mega, Flybridge, Sport, Cruiser, and Others. The Super/ Mega yacht segment is expected to grow at a higher CAGR during the forecast period as the high share of this segment can be attributed to the high popularity of these yachts among the end-users.
Americas is estimated to hold the maximum share in the global Yacht Market in 2021. During the forecast period, Asia-Pacific is set to be the fastest-growing regional market. Furthermore, Asia-Pacific is seeing great growth as a result of a variety of factors. Several factors have contributed to the rapid growth of Yacht markets in Asia-Pacific.

• The report analyses the Yacht Market By Value (USD Million) and by Volume (in numbers)

When the Sea Beckons, Arrive at US Virgin Islands Sailing
Let’s share a story first –
The James couple was planning to celebrate their 35th marriage anniversary in a unique and intimate manner. Sailing the US Virgin Islands with their immediate family members was their plan. These islands comprising three primary domains – St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix are known for their turquoise blue waters, endless powdery beaches, and tranquil atmosphere, (November through April are the best chartering months) in the Caribbean!
Sounds interesting, does it not? Well, this summer, you too can sail with those westerlies in a crewed motor yacht and enjoy the water lapping up on your yacht as you anchor it in the US Virgin Islands!
The islands to visit –
If you are sailing in the US Virgin Islands, then start from the main US island of St. Thomas. With the capital city of Charlotte Amalie, this town is known for its fine dining and impeccable fashion range. Pick up a souvenir for memory.
Next, sail east to the island of St. John which has the very famous Virgin Islands National Park along with 22 self-trekking courses and plenty of beaches. As you sail from St. Thomas, don’t forget to check out the beauty of Christmas cove, Thatch Bay, Lolik Islands, and Red Hook. (Magen’s Bay provides a place to anchor for the night).
Now, with the crewed motor yacht that you received from sailing in the US Virgin Islands, follow the trade winds and reach out to St. Croix. Once you reach and spend some time on the pristine beaches of St. Croix, sail around East End and set up a mooring at Salt Pond Bay. As you take a round trip, a stop at the bustling Cruz Bay is a must!
Why is sailing the best option in the US Virgin Islands?
There are multiple reasons that will make you fall in love with yachting in the US Virgin Islands. Those taking the air-route will miss out on these fronts!
The bays are replete with dead corals and the coves are tangled in mangrove roots, making the beaches a sight to behold.
Francis Bay, Maho Bay, and Caneel Bay are anchorages for an overnight stay. So from beach camping tonight parties to water activities (snorkeling), you are in for some gala time! Ample reason to choose sailing services in the US Virgin Islands.
Anchor your yacht at the bay and check out the ‘must-visit sites’ during the day. At night, enjoy a warm bath and a taste of local delicacies ruffled up by your crew.
For reserving your choicest crewed motor yacht, do make it a point to book in advance. The idea of a yacht charter in the US Virgin Islands can get an ideal form only if you have every aspect well planned. What are you waiting for? This fall – make Caribbean seas your destination!
