2024 English language manga releases I'm enjoying

Here are a couple of titles I've picked up in English so far this year that I've enjoyed. Most of these I read digitally in Japanese for one or two volumes a couple of years back, but opted to wait and purchase the English print versions for my collection.

I feel like all of these books are worth the purchase price, but don't have the energy to do individual posts for each of them. So here's a very smooshed together post covering a few 2024 reads.

GOGOGOGO-GO-GHOST! from Yen Press

Akechi Ushiro is a heavily flawed, hard-working woman whose disregard for her own wellbeing results in her coming face-to-face with her equally flawed guardian spirit, Masako. The pair decide to combine their forces and begin tackling the obstacles in Ushiro's life using curses.

Hiruzuka Miyako's darkly funny tale of a woman taking control of her life alongside her queer sister spirit is such a delight . Featuring a rough-and-ready art style that helps underscore the macabre elements at play, the entire first volume is scathing in its humour and unashamed in its portrayal of Ushiro's flaws. I was surprised when this one got picked up by Yen Press a while back, but so happy to see it enjoying a stateside release. If you're after something that doesn't always play nice, GOGOGOGO-GO-GHOST! might well be for you.

Pass the Monster Meat, Milady! (Akujiki Reijou to Kyouketsu Koushaku) from Kodansha USA

A sweet little fantasy romance between two individuals who find solace in one another despite being reviled by the general public for their interest in monsters. One loves defeating monsters in battle while the other loves cooking them!

Melphiera is a smart, capable heroine while Aristide Rogier du Galbraith is a dashing and supportive hero. The manga art is a bit low in detail, but the characters and story are absolutely worth your time. I'd love to see the LNs that the manga adapts in English someday too. I mentioned in tags before this whole series gives me the types of vibes I enjoy in historical fantasy romance novels, so if you like that kind of content this might be a good title to check out (or recommend to friends who appreciate romantasy but haven't tried manga before).

In The Name of The Mermaid Princess (Mio no Na no Moto ni) from VIZ Media

In a country where being "unhuman" or in some way supernaturally inclined is seen as a curse rather than a blessing, Princess Mio takes medications to suppress her mermaid-esque traits and please her father. Her perspective changes when Yuri, a tutor from her fiance's home kingdom, encourages her to be herself and embrace the things that make her different.

I've seen people say this is a bit too obvious in its parallels between fantasy oppression and IRL issues, but this is a Ribon manga for young girls so yeah it's on the nose but I think it works for the audience it has in mind. Tashiro Miya's artwork here is gorgeous and both leads are quite endearing (Mio is SO freakin adorable I can'ttttt). Overall a solid little series with nicely packaged volumes for those after something for a younger audience.

The Moon on a Rainy Night (Amayo no Tsuki) from Kodansha USA

A romantic slice-of-life tale featuring two high school girls, one of whom is a budding pianist (Saki) and the other a loner who is hard of hearing (Kanon).

I don't normally go much on high school romance but the way this series blends classic GL melodrama tropes with genuine issues in an earnest manner works for me. While we see things more from Saki's viewpoint as she eagerly tries to learn more about Kanon and tries to figure out her own sexuality, we do also come to understand Kanon's thwarted ambitions and the difficulties she has with letting people in.

Kuzushiro's art is quite whispy and cute, with all the characters tending to look quite well-realised on the page. While I prefer romances that feature a character with disability to centre their perspective, I do feel this does a decent job of portraying both girls as they try to navigate their deepening relationship. YMMV on this though, particularly if you are d/Deaf or hard of hearing.

Sketchy from Kodansha USA

Ako is living an unfulfilling life with a dull job and even duller boyfriend, but she suddenly finds herself thrust into a whole new world upon encountering a mysterious young skateboarder.

Sketchy, while ostensibly about women taking up skateboarding is more a snapshot of their individual lives and the role having a hobby plays once you're no longer a child. Ako's story particularly resonates with me (I literally worked her job at a similar age) but all the characters prove interesting in their own way.

Makihirochi's art is a bit more experimental than others on this list and may not be to everyone's taste, but I do think Sketchy is still worth checking out even if you're not entirely sold on the art (which I think has improved since I first became familiar with her work through Itsuka Tiffany de Choushoku o in Comic Bunch). Titles like this, which, let's face it, have low levels of mainstream appeal, don't often get English language releases so I highly recommend supporting this one if you have the opportunity to do so.

MARDI 13 AOÛT 2024 (Billet 2 / 4)

Ernest Hemingway a publié en 1964 « Paris est une fête » (par chance il ne connaissait pas Anne Hidalgo, ce livre autrement n’aurait jamais existé !), nous, nous fêtons tout : nos anniversaires respectifs, nos 2 anniversaires de mariage (civil et religieux) ET la Saint-Valentin ET la Saint-Amour… car pourquoi faire de jaloux entre ces 2 derniers ?

Mais vendredi (9 août), nous nous sommes dit que nous allons plutôt célébrer la Saint-Amour dimanche, en regardant la Cérémonie de Clôture des JO.

Malheureusement la Cérémonie de Clôture nous a assez vite ennuyés, beaucoup déçus même (et nous sommes loin d’être les seuls !)… nous nous attendions à tellement mieux !!!

Nous ne savions pas que la France avait à ce point honte de sa langue : LE FRANÇAIS, de ses chanteurs, voire de ses acteurs !!! A part Zaho de Sagazan aux Tuileries (« Sous le ciel de Paris ») et le ténor Benjamin Bernheim (« L’Hymne à Apollon » de Gabriel Fauré… un tube absolu susceptible de plaire à la Terre entière, n'est-ce pas ???) qui ont chanté en français, tout ensuite l’a été en anglais (dont les groupes Phoenix, Air et la chanteuse Angèle). Car chacun sait bien sûr qu’en France, à part ceux-là, nous n’avons aucun chanteur ou groupe digne de ce nom ! Idem pour les comédiens. Aux Jeux de Londres, nous avions vu Daniel Craig/James Bond descendre en parachute avec la Reine d’Angleterre et hier soir, Tom Cruise, arriver du ciel en rappel au Stade de France pour chercher le drapeau Olympique et l’amener en moto puis en cargo jusqu’aux USA, à Los Angeles.

Malgré tout, une mention particulière pour Iseult qui, vers la fin de la Cérémonie, a superbement chanté une chanson française (« Comme d’habitude » de Jacques Revaux et Claude François)… mais en anglais ! Quoique cela pouvait se justifier car elle s’adressait à ce moment-là aux Américains. Et puis, ce fut une très belle interprétation !

Le « numéro » de Tom Cruise était bien monté, rien à dire (et franchement, on s’en tape le coquillard qu’il soit de l’église de Scientologie !). Mais nous l’avons regardé le lendemain matin au petit déjeuner car, fatigués d’attendre la fin qui n’arrivait pas, nous avons lancé un enregistrement et sommes allés nous coucher.

En conclusion, sauvée par la classe de Léon Marchand en costard noir, la très bonne ambiance qui régnait dans le stade et les 4 karaokés repris par tous les athlètes et les spectateurs du Stade de France (génial le « Freed from Desire » de Gala, un des Crazy Signs les plus connus, dansé dans tous les Villages du Club Med !) et, SURTOUT, le très impressionnant feu d’artifice, nous donnons ❤️❤️ sur 5 à cette Clôture, pas plus car beaucoup trop longue, trop sombre, trop pompeuse et confuse (signification de la guêpe interstellaire ???) et ne faisant pas suffisamment honneur à nos artistes français.

De loin, nous lui avons préféré notre petit « french apéro » : Beaujolais Saint-Amour, pâté, saucisson, baguette de pain, chips, petites crudités locales, sel de Guérande, beurre et « Chorizo corse » (mais oui !).

As guias de recolhimento (GR-PR) não são enviadas pelos correios, e a Secretaria da Fazenda e a Receita Estadual também não encaminham boletos por e-mail nem aplicativos de mensagens. Os contribuintes devem gerá-las para pagamento por meio dos canais oficiais, como o Portal IPVA, os aplicativos Serviços Rápidos, da Receita Estadual, e Detran Inteligente, disponíveis para Android e iOS, ou o Portal de Pagamentos de Tributos. Você pode acessar o portal do IPVA clicando AQUI. Uma opção para pagamento é o pix, em que o contribuinte usa o QR Code presente na guia de recolhimento, reconhecido por mais de 800 instituições financeiras. O pagamento nessa modalidade é compensado em até 24 horas e pode ser efetuado pelos canais digitais dos bancos, inclusive aqueles que não têm convênio com o Estado. Também há a opção de quitar o IPVA com cartão de crédito, modalidade que permite o parcelamento em até 12 vezes, com cobrança de juros pelas emissoras dos cartões. A tabela de taxas está disponível AQUI. ALÍQUOTA – A alíquota do IPVA no Paraná é fixada em 3,5% sobre o valor venal de carros e motos em geral. Para ônibus, caminhões, veículos de carga, de aluguel ou movidos a gás natural veicular (GNV), a alíquota é de 1%. São tributados os veículos fabricados nos últimos 20 anos, de 2004 em diante. Há isenção para algumas categorias específicas, como ônibus de transporte público, veículos de transporte escolar e veículo de propriedade de pessoas com deficiência, entre outros. ATRASO – Em caso de atraso, a multa é de 0,33% ao dia mais juros de mora (de acordo com a taxa Selic). Após 30 dias de atraso, o percentual é fixado em 10% do valor do imposto. SITES FALSOS – A Secretaria da Fazenda alerta os contribuintes sobre a existência de sites falsos relacionados à cobrança do IPVA. A recomendação é que as guias de pagamento sejam sempre geradas através dos sites oficiais, cujos endereços terminam com a extensão “pr.gov.br”, ou por meio dos apps da Receita Estadual e do Detran, que oferecem formas seguras de realizar os pagamentos. O ano que eu menos me entendi como ser pensante e que descobri que a admiração que eu tenho pelas pessoas é fruto de puro egocentrismo, ou em outras palavras que vão me tornar um ser humano horroroso - " queria admiração, não consegui, então o que tenho deles? nada! Logo, só me resta admira-los e sentir bem no fundo da minha alma uma tristeza que é puro egocentrismo revestido de admiração. (Essa sessão com a terapeuta foi foda inclusive)

Que ano bizarro, to saindo dele sem nem mesmo entender caralha nenhuma, nem as resoluções para 2024 eu fiz. Honestamente queria tá fumando nesse exato momento, mas acho que qualquer usuário ativo do tumblr nos dias de hoje se não é um jovem adolescente que quer se achar o diferentão por estar nessa bela e feroz rede social, é uma pessoa que viveu a "era desastrosa de ouro" dessa porra e agora usa em segredo e provavelmente não bate bem da cabeça como um bom user de tumblr.

Descobri que uma pessoa que eu admiro (e segundo minha psicologa minha admiração vem do desejo de eu ser essa pessoa ou ter essa pessoa olhando pra mim de forma atenciosa, desejosa [procurei no google, a palavra existe, ok?] usa também isso aqui ainda.

Minha mente ficou um turbilhão quando ela me contou, pq é isso né! Caraca, como somos seres secretoss cara. Tantas contas por ai e a gente não compartilhou a conta de usuário. Honestamente foi melhor assim, senão, qual a magia de ter isso aqui sem o anonimato maravilhoso que é estar escrevendo, ou postando música, ou fazendo qualquer outra coisa aqui?

Bom demais, tava com saudade de escrever idiotices. Esse ano foi muito foda no quesito conexão com o meu interior. Muito dificil ter que lidar comigo mesma, então eu só desassociei e foi uma maravilha hipócrita que eu me dei esse ano. Obrigada por isso cérebro, graças a isso esqueci muitos momentos que de fato foram um lixo pra mim esse ano, incluindo golpes economicos e viagens com o ex possível um dos amores que passaram em minha vida até o momento.

sintetizar meus sentimentos, fazer tipo um prensadão de memórias e choros e felicidades e histórias que vivi esse ano pra trazer pra cá não é objetivo, acho que é muito mais a paz de poder sair escrevendo que nem o carinha que escreveu um parágrafo pica na redação do enem e outro parágrafo que era a porra de uma receita de bolo e ainda tirou uma nota boa.

Não to aqui me importando com leituras, as palavras tão apenas saindo e eu so estou no aguardo do momento que eu vou acordar pra mim mesma.
