State of Grace by Taylor Swift, a lyrical analysis

An intro

One of my favourite songs from Taylor!! I just love the line "So you were never a saint, and I loved in shades of wrong, we learn to live with the pain, mosaic broken hearts!" I like how the song sets the tone of Red with the lyric "Love is a ruthless game unless you play it good and right." This song is hopeful, and encapsulates the feeling of a new love, yet with a warning message.

"Traffic lights" is an imagery that is used by Taylor throughout the album and also later on in Lover.

In Holy Ground, she writes "Took off faster then a green light, go!" and in All Too Well, "You almost ran the red cuz you were looking over at me."

Later on, in Death by a Thousand Cuts, she sings "I ask the traffic lights if it'll be alright and they said-

In DBATC, Taylor says that she looked to the traffic lights for reassurance, as a sign that everything was going to be alright.

In State of Grace, I believe that traffic lights set the scene for the song, especially with the strong drum beats as the introduction. It paints a fast-paced, electric scene of a city, perhaps reflecting upon her hectic lifestyle, further highlighted in "and all we know is touch and go."

"We are alone with our changing minds" also reflects upon the fickle nature of affection.

Taylor further reflects upon the fragile nature of love in "We fall in love till it hurts or bleeds or fades in time" which is a lyric parallel to Begin Again, ("...thinking all love ever does is break, burn and end").

In the chorus, she addresses the subject of the song, her lover at this instant. She reflects upon how their love has taken her by surprise and affected her in a way that she'll "never be the same".

The armour that she puts on after past forays into love drops when she is with this person. Their presence is so huge and electric that it seems that the room erupts, "like a cannonball".

Referring to "Up in your room and our slates are clean", "Slate" basically means blackboard, so to have clean slates could mean that their stories, narratives are rewritten and changed by each other.

"Just twin fire signs, four blue eyes" could mean that at the time, it seemed that they were compatible for each other due to the fact that they had so much so much in common, down to their horoscopes and eye colour. This probably gave her a sign that it could be something different from the past.

It also means that at that moment, nothing mattered to her more than that person--she was wholly absorbed by his presence.

MY FAVORITE VERSE!!!!!

In this verse, she acknowledges their flaws when it comes to love-all the grey areas and in-betweens. He was never the best when it comes to being a lover, and neither was she.

Their hearts had been broken before, as she sings in "Mosaic broken hearts"--Hearts that had been broken and shattered into pieces but pulled back together again to form a mosaic.

Yet, she and her lover "lives with the pain" and carry on with their love, diving into it fearlessly and recklessly.

And we come to the title of the song, "State of Grace" which refers to a state of goodness and peace. This is somehow in contrast with the next line "This is the worthwhile fight."

She often refers to love as a battle, as can be seen in her later song "The Great War" and "Afterglow". In the Great War, she sings about a conflict during a relationship, "I vowed I would always be yours if we survived the Great War" and in Afterglow, "Fighting with a true love is boxing with no gloves". (I've always found Afterglow and The Great War similar in terms of subject matter)

Additionally, in "I Wish You Would" she sings "I wish we could go back and remember what we were fighting for" she refers to love as being something that had to be fought for; it clearly wasn't something easy.

Yet, she refers to this challenge as "worthwhile" as it was something that she cherished and at the time wanted to last.

She also references some Greek mythology in the next few lines, "Hands of fate"--perhaps referring to the Fates?

The fates are 3 divinities in Greek Mythology representing the inescapable destiny of life. Interestingly, the concept of fate and destiny appears in her later song, "Invisible String"---"All along there was some invisible string tying you to me." (next mashup on the eras tour maybe? 👀)

She thinks of this love as something fated, supposed to happen to her. (Although this is juxtaposed by the line, "I never saw you coming") At the end of it, even though she was surprised at how he has affected her, she believes that their love is meant to be.

Another reference to events in Greek Mythology is "You're my achilles heel" --She refers to him as her weakness, a source of her vulnerability. This is also a callback to her previous lyric "You come around and the armour falls". She can be vulnerable when she's with him.

Interestingly, with the battle concept, having no armour and referring to him as her "achilles heel" makes her more susceptible to being wounded in the ruthless game of love.

Despite this, she is earnest in her belief that this love is "the golden age of something good and right and real".

This reflects upon the earnest hoping that a relationship (in its early stage) would last and become stronger. 🥹

I love Taylor's writing in this song, and how her later songs seem to reference this song. This really does set the tone for Red, in its vulnerable hope, clearly written to indicate the start of a relationship.

One of my favorite reminders from one of my favorite songs. It’s okay to be broken, because you can still be whole. No matter how much it hurts, you can still go on. We learn to live with the pain.

I had the time of my life fighting dragons with you

July marks the TWELVE YEAR anniversary of hearing your music for the first time, and on top of that I’m turning TWENTY and seeing you FIVE TIMES!

I’m seeing you at Philly night one (July 13th), Metlife nights one, two, and three (July 20th, 21st, and 22nd), and Gillette night one (July 26th) and then my birthday is July 31st!! 

I am so thankful for all of the memories we have shared over the past twelve years, and I’m ready to make so many more.

On May 22nd, Tara aka @upliftingswiftieisdead (who you should totally follow) and I danced the night away in Seattle at Centurylink field and had the night of our lives. She has been my rock and sunshine since we met at 1989 Seattle, and I am so so so lucky to be able to share those amazing memories with you! I flew home from NYC to Seattle for my hometown show and it was everything I could have ever asked for.

Over the past twelve years, you have absolutely changed my life. You've been here for me through my parents divorce, through my struggles with mental illness, self harm, and body image, through toxic relationships, lost friendships, struggles with school, with my family, getting in to my dream school, moving across the county from Seattle to NYC inspired by you, adopting and training my service dog and taking my mental illness head-on. You've been the high to all my lows, the light through all my darkness, and sometimes one of the only things to keep me going and keep me brave and strong.

I've seen five of your shows now, one on each tour. I've seen you every time you came to the Seattle area, from Key Arena to the Tacoma Dome to Centurylink! My mom and I saw you in Vegas when we won tickets to the iHeartRadio festival, and I just saw you with my best friend, Dee, and service dog, Samantha, at Madison Square Garden for Jingle Ball! I'm not sure if you remember, but you sang You're Not Sorry for me in Tacoma on the red tour because my friend who met you requested it for me, and you found me at the bstage during your speech before and said "don't cry, I love you"!!! You also pointed at Jolene, Erica and I during Out Of The Woods during the 1989 tour in Seattle when we were in the pit!

I don't know if you've seen my post about it, but for as long as I've know what tattoos are, I've wanted "I had the time of my life fighting dragons with you" tattooed in your handwriting. Since turning 18, I've gotten 4 tattoos, 2 of which are dedicated to you! I have an evergreen tree on the outside of my right ankle, and a sun on the inside of my right ankle. They represent "the monsters turned out to be just trees, when the sun came up you were looking at me". OOTW is a song that has been there for me through all of the twists and turns of the last 3 years of my life, and having these with me all the time reminds me just what I'm fighting for, what I'm doing with my life.

I'm graduating college in exactly a year (may 2019!), and this past year has been one of growth and change. I don't think I could have made it through it without you, and without reputation. All of your albums, all of your songs (even the unreleased ones) have been there for me exactly when I needed them. From listening to Fearless in the back of my mom's car when I was dealing with endless bullying, to escaping with Speak Now when I was starting with my high school and my whole life was changing, to sobbing to Red when ending my toxic, abusive relationship and losing all my "friends", to 1989 becoming my soundtrack to my last year of high school and move to NYC, to reputation holding my hand through all my darkest nights and hardest times. You have, and always will be, the soundtrack of my life. Every song correlates with another story, another memory, another moment that I will never forget.

I'm so thankful for you liking my photo on instagram (one of the first posts you ever liked!!!), for following me (even though I broke my computer because of it), for reblogging my post on tumblr (and tagging "love youuuuuuu"), tweeting a picture of me baking 1989 cookies, for every like, every interaction, every moment that has kept me going over these past 12 years. You have also brought so many amazing people into my life, from Tara @upliftingswiftieisdead to Jolene @burnttoast13 and Brooke @mosaicbrokenhearts and Bailey @redlipclassic, my high school best friend Erik, my college best friend and big sister Dee, and even my service dog Samantha! You have given me so much to look forward to, to live for, and a real purpose and source of happiness in my life. I hope that maybe you’ve seen how thankful I am, and all the times I’ve written to you over the years. 

I was originally supposed to come to your reputation celebration party in nyc in november, but unfortunately there was a miscommunication between at&t and your team and the people I was invited by about my service dog and my schedule and in the end they took me off the list and said that it “wasn’t a big deal” to miss the event... I was so heartbroken but at&t ended up showcasing my service dog and I in their advertisements for your pop up shop and I know that someday I’ll be able to get that hug that Samantha and I were supposed to give you on that day!

It would also be amazing if you could please please please play Out of the Woods at Metlife nights 1, 2, or 3, or Gillette night 1! From my tattoo post, you can see how much that songs means to me. At the beginning of the month, the person that I thought was going to end up with, that was my longest and (I thought) best relationship, broke up with me. It’s been honestly really devastating and so hard for me, but you’re here for me again, right beside me. 

I love you so very much and I can't thank you enough for all you've done for me. I could never imagine loving someone else for so long, and I'm so thankful that you have been the longest and best relationship I've ever had. I hope you might read my other posts, see my tattoos, and maybe even want to hug me after these 12 years. I saw you in Seattle (after flying back from NYC so I can come to my hometown show!) and can’t wait to see you again at Philly night 1, MetLife all 3 nights, and Gillette night 1.

Thank you for being my rock, my sunshine, my evergreen tree, and my best friend forever. Love youuuuuuu forever and ever and thank you for everything. Can't wait to dance the night away together!!

hi @taylorswift! i’d like to introduce you to my beautiful friend brooke ( @mosaicbrokenhearts ). you already know her online but i just know you’d love her in person. brooke has been through a hell of a lot but she is still one of the kindest people on the planet who will do anything she can to help her friends and getting to fly out to california to spend 9 days with her is one of the best things i’ve ever done. brooke is kind and compassionate and funny and empowering and doesn’t stand for crap from anybody. brooke is so brave and so wonderful and it’s through you and @gracehelbig that we became friends and i cannot thank you enough. Hi Taylor, this is a post about this absolute ray of sunshine Brooke aka @mosaicbrokenhearts on tumblr or nofiltergrace /  lovetheplayers on twitter (who will probably kill me when she sees I made this post!)

You may be thinking to yourself huh... I recognize her!! WELL it’s because you may remember her from giving her your cookie recipe, commenting on her adorable instagram pictures, or just generally interacting with her here on tumblr!!

Brooke was one of my first ever friends on tumblr, and we’ve been through a lot together. She has been there for me through so many of my ups and downs, my highest of highs and lowest of lows. She is the sweetest, prettiest, funniest, most kind, supportive, compassionate, and caring person you will ever meet. She never fails to support me and cheer me up, no matter what either of us is going through at the time. I could talk about how much she means to me for hours on end and still never be done! She deserves the whole entire world, and I would do anything to give it to her. 

So... I have just one request...

PLEASE find Brooke tomorrow (today) at Gillette night three and give her the BIGGEST HUG IN THE WHOLE WORLD!!! 

This is her LAST CHANCE to get the hug she has been waiting for all these years, and there is nothing that would make me happier. She has been constantly standing on the sidelines supporting her friends through everything, watching absolutely amazing things happen for them and cheering them on, but her time hasn’t come yet. She would never ask for this herself, but she deserves it so so so much.

i agree i also find the positioning of it kinda weird in the midst of all those love songs about joe

i agree, and to be honest i may well have felt differently had it come earlier on in the album rather than towards the end with all the tender and loving songs. it’s just a very jarring transition to go from dress which is about very loving and tender sex to nice things which is a diss track about her so called feuds and reputation to call it what you want to which is about how her reputation and the outside world don’t matter to her any more when there was just a song thirty seconds ago about the world outside her and joe. just seems like a poor placement to me and it doesn’t fit with the rest of the album imo. like i said, i love the imagery in the first verse and that gatsby line is wonderful, but i feel like it could have gone earlier in the album to make the most sense or have been excluded all together and the album wouldn’t be missing that much.
