You're a hearty one to feed, Eve had said a week before. You might eat me out of my season's harvest. today, the affection in her voice is distilled between her syllables, the words in her mouth hard and jagged as rocks. she sits opposite of her visitor with her own glass of ( also stolen, ) whiskey; it is raised to her mouth and she drinks quick, the liquid burning against her throat. ❝ haven't told me why you're back here. i don't do kindly with secrets, not here. ❞ a loose threat against her tongue. another sip of bitter drink. she watches the woman eat her food, at her table. a creeping of dread courses up her shoulders and spine.

the woman [ @queenwolf ] takes her time with answering, eve would expect nothing less. despite her annoyance, she lets the woman turn the words on her tongue. and then –– “ i don’t know what to do... ” says she, at a stranger's table, eating a stranger's food. Eve bristles. Eve takes a deep swig of whiskey.

❝ what do you mean ? ❞ at the back of her neck, a transformation threatens this lining of peace. despite her steadiness, the slight haziness of alcohol begins to itch behind her eyes, teeth fighting to sharpen against the curling of her mouth. the woman stands from the table with her glass, takes a step backwards. ❝ don't bring me any of yourself. i do not want to see it. keep it outside, your mess, unless you are paying me for helping you. ❞

happy almost new year! 2022 was the first year in a very long time that i consistently wrote every month, so i'm excited to look back on it! my writing this year was dominated by my latest wip, next day after dawn, including both canonverse content and a lot of stupid au bullshit <3

details under the cut!

january

in january i was still very much in dearer than a friend mode after finishing the first draft in november, but with no progress to make on the book itself i ended up writing some speculative post-canon (and very non-canon) nonsense involving preston getting into a terrible terrible relationship with another man. this one was a collab with @inkgel for which we definitely wrote a sane and normal amount of content

It’s not that he intended for this to happen. But the truth has been bubbling up for so long now, and eroding him a little more each time it does, wearing away at whatever remains of his willpower, his sense of himself, his belief that he has anything left to lose. And he’s already damned. He knows that deep down. He could repent, he supposes. Maybe God would forgive him. But Val won’t. He doesn’t really see the point. And it’s because of that too. Because he’s alone now, in a way he never has been, never could have been for the past eleven years of his life, because he always had someone who was supposed to be his. He’s not sure how he’s supposed to forget it when it feels like a piece of him has been ripped out, leaving a gaping wound that throbs and bleeds and refuses even to begin to heal. So he has to find someone to fill it, even if they don’t fit quite right.

february

in february i was mostly focused on my classes, but that did involve reading paradise lost and briefly getting very fixated on eve. i wrote less than two pages of this, but i was having fun with some dialogue between eve and satan. it was interesting to try to figure out what the pov of someone so ignorant of the world might look like

“Are you an angel?” I ask. That creature that he is talking to as I am talking to you. I do not really know what an angel is. He would not let me listen with him so it could be explained to me. But I know that an angel is something greater than me, and you are greater than me, but you are not Him, so I think maybe that is right. “I was an angel,” you say. “Was?” “I don’t know if I can explain it to you.” I feel something when you say that, something that I have no name for, but I know it is something that is bad to feel. Frustration, I think. I am good at naming things. I am as good as him. Sometimes I wish that He had left some of the animals for me to name too, but that is something that is bad to wish.

march

in march i decided i needed to get out of endlessly spinning dtaf mode. i also read gtn and remembered how much i love ensemble casts. and lo and behold, next day after dawn was born. this was one of the very first scenes i wrote, between mona and her mother austra when mona is (spoilers) experiencing life threatening illness moments. their mother/daughter dynamic is everything to me

“Don’t lie,” she said, and tried not to think about the fact that she sounded more than a little like she was begging. “Don’t—Selene can’t lie for shit, and she told me everything was fine, but she probably just wanted to avoid a difficult conversation, probably thought it was for the best, because she’s an idiot, but if you lie—” The room felt suffocating, stuffy and overly hot. She was suddenly viscerally aware of the sticky dampness of sweat beneath her shirt, and that, somehow, was more overwhelming than the pain that spiderwebbed from her pounding head all the way down her back. Her mother was silent, her face still very nearly impassive, but there was something in the slight furrowing of her brows that Mona thought looked terribly sad. “Don’t you dare,” Mona said furiously. Her eyes were burning. She blinked hard to clear the definitely-not-tears forming there. “Don’t you dare act like I’m going to die.”

more ndad snippets! this was from the first full scene i finished, which ended up being prince cyrus' pov of the first night after the coup. he is so mentally ill

Cyrus thought that was a nice enough idea on paper, given the circumstances. But when it became clear that it involved putting on his least comfortable court clothes and shuffling into a musty, overly crowded hall where three scuffed tables and a dozen mismatched chairs had been pushed together in some imitation of a royal banquet, he very quickly began to have second thoughts. Cassandane tried to motion for him to sit at the head of the table when they came in. He sat just to the right of it instead, as he would have if he really had been at court. If the king had been here. But the fact that he wasn’t didn’t make it feel any more right to take his place. So Cyrus didn’t. No one else did either. The chair sat untouched at the front of the room, a ghost in an empty seat. Not a ghost, Cyrus tried to remind himself. Just not here. He would be back soon. They would all be back soon. He couldn’t handle thinking anything else.

ndad strikes again! this is going to be most of this. here we have the first darcy pov i wrote, featuring them being sent to woo princess cassandane for prince cyrus and falling head over heels in love with her themself. (take a shot every time someone in ndad has a line about being or not being their father's son)

“I am not a real princess,” she told them after a long moment. “But I am interested in becoming a queen.” She looked one already, Darcy thought. Her eyes were diamond hard, her jaw and cheekbones carved from marble. She could have knocked her father’s statue to the ground and stood on the pedestal in its place and put it to shame. She could have told them to do anything for her, and it wouldn’t have crossed their mind not to obey. She was all that a queen should be. And Darcy was what they should have been. They were not truly the King’s ambassador, nor the Prince’s surrogate. Their loyalty went only as far as their self-interest. They were not their father’s son. But they were, if nothing else, an excellent liar, which was why they could never fully explain the sudden urge they felt to tell her the truth.

in june i wrote a short story for a shakespeare-themed horror anthology! it did not get in, but this was my first shot at horror, so i had a ton of fun anyway. i'll probably post this one on ao3 soon -- it's fun little examination of the inherent freakiness of the ending of all's well that ends with, this time with 100% more black magic

Here’s my confession: I don’t love my wife.  Confession’s probably the wrong word though. Cause it’s not like I can tell anyone. Everyone around here thinks we got our perfect miracle of a storybook ending, so maybe I’m the one who’s wrong for not wanting it. Maybe I deserve this. My happily ever after. I don’t know how they believe it. Well, they believe it because I said it, I said I love Helen, and the lie came out smoother than it should have, given the circumstances, because God knows I’ve had too much practice. Maybe I sounded like I meant it. What I actually said was that I’d love her forever. I never said I was smart.

we're back in ndad land, and oh boy, this was a month. july was the first time i've ever beaten nanowrimo, fully unintentionally, simply because @wren-is-writing and i went fucking insane with the au fanfiction. but the piece that started it all was renan's backstory, aka renan's spiral into destroying every part of himself over his love for a terrible little boyboss war criminal (hi king cyrus). this is the first time the two of them meet, when cyrus is still in his rakish misbehaving prince era. brainworms are found in the gay old men

The others are already drinking deep again, eager to accept another newcomer into their circle for the night, but your mouth has gone dry. It’s almost hard to look at him. It’s harder to look anywhere else. He notices you staring. When he catches your eye, it makes your heart jump into your throat. “What?” he asks. “Something in my teeth?” You’re barely breathing. “Your Highness,” you manage, and you can’t read the look that crosses his face. Hebes slaps his hand down on the table so hard it makes your glass rattle, and lets out an incredulous, booming laugh. “Stars above, Renan, is that Prince Cyrus?” The boy next to you winks and flashes another incandescent grin. “Just call me Cy.”

It would happen, though, they told themself. It would happen eventually. Because she loved them, they were sure, even if neither of them had phrased it that way exactly. They’d as good as told each other more times than they could count. They had always worked that way, reading between the lines but knowing they were on the same page. “You’re brilliant, you know,” they murmured, dropping their voice so low they were sure only she could hear it. Just one more way of telling her. They knew she’d understand. “At dancing or in general?” “Both.” “I do know,” Cass replied. Her slow, curving smile made them flush too much to hide.  “I want to do this more often,” they whispered. They risked stroking their thumb lightly across her shoulder, a gesture they hoped was too small to catch. “I want to do this all the time.” Forever wasn’t a word they would pull out in public regardless of how softly they were speaking, but they were sure she got that too.

She’s not going to make it. That’s the first thing the doctors tell you. It’s the first thing the Church proclaims on the matter too. You’re still confined to your hospital room. You can’t witness it pronounced in a chapel or read it in a star chart. You have to hear it from your husband’s mouth instead. His eyes are red. He’s been crying. You haven’t been. You’ll break down when there’s nothing left to fight for, not a moment sooner than that. Your daughter needs surgeries that haven’t been performed in a century. Your daughter has long brown eyelashes that flutter when you kiss her while she sleeps. Your husband tells you that her doom is written in the stars, and he says it like he thinks it’s true.

and i actually followed austra's backstory up with castor's, because apparently i spent some of this year being semi productive. castor's terrible little psyche revolves around the fact that his brother (everyone's favourite son) died when he was a teenager and he thinks it's his fault for not being a hardened soldier at 17. here he is trying to be a hardened soldier (it's not going well)

You’re not a natural. You’re not even a hard-won talent. Even when you’re not half sleepwalking, you’re slow, clumsy, unsure. Your sword arm grows sore after barely an hour. The straps of your armour chafe against the skin of your neck and leave it raw. You’ve tried your best, memorized a hundred manoeuvres in sparring sessions, but somehow you still freeze in the field. The first time an enemy makes a swipe for you, you run like a coward. By the fiftieth time, you’ve learned to stand your ground, but you don’t know if your allies feel the difference. At night, every comrade you couldn’t save has your brother’s face. He had scars when he—when you saw him the last time. A barely-there line through his eyebrow, another tiny one on his chin. Your father has the gouged-out pit in his left cheek, the mark that proves he is and isn’t invulnerable. Every time a blade flashes in your face, you wonder if you’ll end up with a matching one. It never happens, probably because you’re too quick to flinch back from the strikes that might get close enough. Your skin remains despicably pristine.

wow, a new wip? well maybe. this one is still in very early stages, but i got seized by brainworms consisting of "what if richard and bolingbroke from shakespeare's richard ii were lesbians (and not cousins) and fucking hated each other." also it's the 80s, i think. rielle is our larger than life femme richard who's never met an emotion she couldn't turn into a performance, and the narrator here is jack, butch bolingbroke, who has a lot of daddy issues and hates rielle so fucking much.

Don’t get me wrong. My dad was an asshole. He was a dyed-in-the-wool red-blooded homo-hating bigot and I didn’t shed a tear at his funeral. But he was the kind of asshole where if I called my hair a pixie cut and ditched the Doc Martens for mascara when I came around for dinner, he’d happily keep paying my tuition. He’d even hug me, sometimes. Mostly after Mom died. Both arms around my shoulders, like he meant it. So I had my reasons, basically, for not wanting to publicly tell him to go fuck himself.  And even if I hadn’t, she was the last person I owed an explanation. Easy for her to say she’d cut off her parents in a heartbeat when she didn’t have any, just an inheritance ten times the size I was ever getting and a bunch of framed tabloids with pictures of a Rolls-Royce twisted around a lamp post and a cherub of a girl who knew, even at ten years old, how to cry pretty.

this past month i've been juggling grad school apps and finals and prepping for my thesis, so i haven't written a ton, but i went back to fun shakespeare fanfiction collabs with @inkgel for a bit! here's me attempting to write julius caesar pov `for our caesar/antony character study that we did after playing those characters on zoom (and playing them as in love, of course)

He could do the same with Antony. Antony wouldn’t make him ask twice for it—wouldn’t make him ask at all, probably, because he is always so delightfully quick to capitulate, all it would really take is a finger ghosted over those plush and slightly reddened lips. But Caesar doesn’t like him to be carved out of marble. He likes it when Antony stumbles, the laugh bubbling up from his throat loose and lazy, the perfect planes of his cheekbones marred with a ruddy flush. When Antony clings onto him, half for balance, half because he’s surely looking for any excuse to. When he hangs on several moments longer than he needs to, his pupils blown, his hair mussed not-quite-artfully, and kisses him with the heady scent of wine still on his breath. Perhaps sometimes he would deign to think he loved it, but it’s been years since that word has been his to offer. These days, it’s only for lesser men to give.

Antigen labs, had made a series of fatal mistakes of late. The individuals that ran it were greedy, and did not stop to think that perhaps, they should have stronger protocols in place in case one of their 'test' subjects escaped. They had no plan, no safeguards, in case they had a powerful and ancient vampire return to the world of the living, feral from the injuries that had nearly killed her once before, and undergoing metamorphosis at the same time, by being administered the genetic material of two other members of the corvinus clan. Her sister in all but blood, Selene, and that from her daughter Eve. Sonja had slaughtered every single living being in the building, and compromised their systems--she'd managed to damage both their gas line and their boiler. The building had imploded, she'd suffered minor injuries and retreated to recover and make sense of herself.

By the time she had recovered her sanity and made sense of the memories of the scientists and guards of the laboratory that had held her, she'd adapted to the twenty first century far smoother than she'd expected. She had found, she could walk in the sun. It had been bittersweet for her to make the discovery, that which had once killed her, was no longer a threat. But she didn't know why. She needed to know why, and so she'd found the nearest sister facility to the one that had held her captive. She planned to break in, access their files, find out how they had come to have her remains and revive her. Sonja knew, by all rights, she should have been dead.

She'd been dead, in what the Nordic Coven called Valissa, the in between place....the sacred world. She wanted answers, and that required information. Vampires and Lycans were hunted by humans now, there was no chance of approaching her kin for assistance, and lycans were at war with her kin and were naught likely to help her either.

The vampiress arrived at the facility, just in time to watch another woman who looked eerily like herself infiltrate. It drew the guards attention rather nicely, and provided an excellent distraction for Sonja to slip in unnoticed. She left the other woman to her devices, content to hunt for her answers and perhaps disable a security system or two to aide her on her way. Once inside, she accessed the mainframe and read through the files, immediately learning who the woman she'd seen was. Selene, turned by Viktor. By rights, her sister. And Selene had a daughter, held at the same facility they both had infiltrated. Antigen's researchers, thought to play god, and had erred. The only thing more dangerous than Sonja herself had been....was an enraged vampiress mother who wanted her daughter back. Another person was held captive, but she couldn't ascertain just who it was.

Sonja made her way through the winding halls, ignoring the chaos transpiring through the facility and disposed of any guard that tried to interfere with her bare hands. She needed no weapon, like her father, much as she hated him now, she just as capable of snapping a lycan's neck barehanded. Sonja merely murmured an apology to her Lucian each time she had to, but knew it helped Selene's cause in finding her daughter--the guards were fools, thinking they were the same. Now, none of them knew what floor Selene was on for certain.It seemed none knew that she'd escaped from her facility, perhaps they didn't even know of its destruction yet.

She kicked open the door to the test subject, tracking the familiar scent with hope blossoming in her chest. She knew that scent, she knew it well. Lucian. The vampiress rushed forward, smashing the glass and tearing away at the restraints, freeing the male inside and looking hopefully at his face. It wasn't Lucian.....but someone that smelled of him. Explosions were making the building shake and she could hear a beast distantly, there was no time to sit about and wait for him to wake and explain who he was.....so Sonja took him with her. She stole a gurney and a van, and drove off quickly, weaving through trafic until she found her way back to the safehouse she'd appropriated for herself. Sonja put the male in the other room and settled in to wait, going over the files she'd stolen rom the facility.

Catching herself up on what the war had turned into while she was in Valissa, lost to this world. No one would get in without her being aware of it, and if the man wanted out...she'd let him go without a fight. Soon as she knew why he smelt of her Lucian.

I hate the Muppets, there, I've said it. I hate their voices, their faces, the way that that Gonzo creature just doesn't make sense. What is he? He's a nothing! And why is there a talking shrimp? The whole thing is terrible and ridiculous.

But Selene loves it. She says it's the most important part of Christmas Eve for her. And for that reason I actually look forward to watching it with her, even though I hate it. Because she doesn't.

Most of the people around me I have grown up with, I've know them as children, I know everything they have done (some of which I really wish I didn't know about) but with her I don't. She's still somewhat a mystery to me. We'll be talking or visiting somewhere and a little nugget of information will spill out, like the first time she saw snow or her most memorable Christmas gift, the first time she lost a tooth or something random about her parents or teenage years.

It's nice to share things with her. She shares our traditions and way of life so much that it's only fair I do the same for her, even if every second I spend staring at that screen is torture on my eyes, it's a joy for her.

She's my wife, I love her, and I want to see her happy. So, while she's watching the movie, I'll watch her.

I'll watch her as she sings along to the songs, as she quotes the dialogue, as she laughs and cries, because everything about that movie is precious to her. And I'm honoured to be invited to join her in her tradition, just as she does with mine.

When it's done she'll stretch out from where she's been curled up against my side, she'll check to see if she has any hot chocolate left in her cup (it'll be full but cold because she's forgotten to drink it) then she'll say "Now it's really Christmas." And she'll be happy and content, ready to face the rest of the holiday.

That's the thing that most people forget, it's not about always doing the things that you want to do, about pleasing yourself, it's about doing the things that please others too. About respecting the things that are important to them, even if you don't understand them.

And in my case it's about watching hideous fluffy demons dancing around on screen led by a very large frog. Because she likes it.

Although I have to admit, and I will deny it if anyone ever finds out, its one of the most accurate portrayals of a Christmas Carol I've seen, which just makes it all the more annoying.

Carolyn: Caro doesn't really get excited for holidays. To her, it's just the same as all the other days so why make a big fuss about it. She loves the way Brady (@kc-and-oc) gets excited about them, however, especially when it comes to Christmas. If anyone manages to get her into a festive mood, it's him. Another thing she actually enjoys is New Year's Eve, but more because of the opportunity to dress up than anything else.

Reva: Reva adores Halloween. Dressing up in scary costumes, jump-scares around every corner or telling ghost stories with her friends? She's so in. Her favourite Halloween has got to be the one time she visited her uncle Jake in America, however, to see how Halloween is done 'properly'.

Dylan: It's not a holiday as such, but Dylan likes summer solstice. He likes summer in general and spends all the time he can outside. When he was little, his parents, Reva and he would always make a bonfire in their garden, just because. He tried doing the same during his Hogwarts years, sneaking out with some friends to have a bonfire on the grounds but it didn't really turn out the way he expected it to. Let's just say, as good a friend as Saffron (@the-al-chemist) is to Dylan, he will never celebrate summer solstice with her ever again.

Danielle: Danielle comes after her mother Penny when it comes to all things love and romantic. So naturally, she gets very excited about Valentine's Day. She's hyped up about it days in advance and enjoys hiding little gifts for her friends and loved ones. On the day itself, she goes all out with the effort, much to the annoyance of Dylan who doesn't really see the sense of it all. But Danielle doesn't care - she's cheerful enough for both her and her grumpy boy.

Lizzie: Any party her friends organise revolving around Quidditch matches. Pre-match parties take her mind off her incredibly strong nerves that usually start showing the evening before the match, while post-match parties are the perfect opportunity to either celebrate a glorious victory or drown a crushing defeat. Lizzie has some very good memories related to post-match parties in particular.

Ava: Ava isn't that sociable but she prefers sitting and drinking with friends (or people she tolerates) to actual parties. Casual, informal and no fuss about it.

Reva: Any party is Reva's favourite party, as long as there isn't too much etiquette involved. She'd trade a spontaneous get-together for a gala party any time, but you can have quite a lot of fun on both, if you know how. And, oh boy, if Reva doesn't know, no one does.

Dylan: Dylan would prefer hanging around in his own circle of friends but he does go to parties if the occasion arises. He prefers the more informal ones and is happy to find a quiet place to himself or where he can chat in peace with other people instead of being in the thick of it.

Danielle: Danielle loves any party that involve dancing, whether it's formal or just goofing around. She enjoys dressing up for them and loves helping her friends with their make-up. And all the gossip you can share the next morning? So much fun.

— the night of all hallow’s eve was a night celebrated — and feared — by many. they say it is the one night of the year that opens a portal, that weakens the barrier between the world of devils and gods and humans. the dark witches celebrate, believing that they draw upon stronger black magic on this night. the creatures of the light pray that the darkness wouldn’t touch them as the light witches give them their blessings.

it was, to say the least, a night brimming with supernatural activities.

but no one actually expected demons at their door, no matter what superstitions came with the night of halloween. who could’ve guessed that the night would take a more sinister turn, and all because of a simple lock and key?

yet, just as her namesake had curiously opened something that she wasn’t supposed to, pandora astor too unleashed the contents of her own version of pandora’s box.

it’s a question that many have asked before, but always it comes unanswered. until the night of all hallow’s eve.

until his own daughter exposed his secrets to the world.

bitter and jaded, determined and curious — perhaps it is was hunger for power that drew her to the door. whatever the reason was, it didn’t change the fact that the deed was done. demons, now unleashed to the world after the turn of a lock.

but ezra was far from a fool — he knew better than to leave such a dangerous door totally unguarded. demons were set free but so was a spell; a spell powerful enough to totally suspend time around the little town of fairview. an eternal halloween night seems like every childs dream, but it just might be everyone's nightmare in reality. 

now everyone must find a way to reverse the spell and seal the demons from back which they came — or die trying. 

since it is the night of halloween, many of the town’s citizens will be out and about celebrating — whether it is at a private party, trick or treating, or any other manner of celebration.

one of the more widely known parties in town on all hallow’s eve is one hosted by malachai cain, owner of the den and southside pack alpha himself. the annual costume party is hosted at the den, complete with a haunted house nearby. with an abandoned house turned into an eerily realistic haunted house, guests — both supernaturals and humans alike — are eager to take their chances.

another popular party held in town is the party thrown by lucien loredan in his house in rosehill. it’s set up as a circus themed party, with lucien himself as its ringleader. most of its attendants are the rich of fairview, but the man’s generosity is extended to the public. anyone is free to attend, but do be mindful that its host is a suspect in christian vanderbilt’s murder.

as mentioned in the plot drop, fairview is now suspended in time. this means that it is october 31st for the unforeseeable future. all clocks are frozen on the time 11:51 p.m. everyone might not notice it at first, especially if they’ve yet to come into contact with demons, but it’d become evident soon enough that time isn’t progressing the way it should. 

not everyone might realize that demons are on the loose around town until things begin to get hectic. demons look like humans for all intents and purposes and only the most seasoned of hunters might recognize one, but even then its unlikely. 

no resident can currently exit fairview. similarly, no one can enter it either. everyone is currently trapped in town with the demons.

for as of this moment, no one beyond the demons knows who let them loose. the demons can choose to spread this information or keep it to themselves if they wish. 

we now have added demons to our species page. they are now a species available to apply for.

this is the time for everyone to make big plots to keep the dash moving. we’ve given you the foundations to create some really interesting threads!

we’d like to remind everyone that christian’s killer is still on the loose during all of this. the current suspects are: annice fairchild, nam heeyoung, lucien loredan, & selene kim. people will especially be on edge around these characters during this time, especially humans and hunters. if you’d like your vampire character added to the list, please contact us.

Selene heard her daughter’s footsteps before she saw her approach. When she did, a warm smile appeared on the normally cold woman’s face. It had been some time since she was in the presence of her daughter, and they had a lot to discuss. In the time Eve had been gone, Selene had become a vampire elder, thought she lost her mate and then found him again, and had gained more power than could have been thought of before. It was strange, but she almost felt... content in what had occurred. When she saw Eve, she opened her arms for her, ready to embrace her daughter after so long. 

“I have missed you, Eve.”

Alexia is by far the more affectionate of the two in their relationship, but any and all displays of affection have to be done when the coven is asleep. Alexia sneaks out of the servant’s quarters and heads straight to Eve’s room. She doesn’t do anything more than cuddling and the occasional kiss, more than content to just spend time with her. 

When Selene found out about their relationship, she immediately told Alexia that she had to stay away from Eve, otherwise there would be consequences. She immediately began to keep her distance from the young hybrid, to both of their dismay. She wouldn’t meet her eyes when they talked, instead her eyes would be at the ground and if Eve tried to touch her, she would stiffen and attempt to back way from the touch. It took a week for Alexia to open up with Eve about what happened, and once she did, Eve went straight to her mother and talked it out with her.

While with Marius, Alexia was used to being roughhoused and pushed around. With Eve, she finds things are a lot different. Eve is very gentle with her. The rare time Eve initiates any form of contact with her, it’s a soft touch to her skin or a gentle brush of the lips. At first, she was scared by how gentle everything is because it’s not what she’s used to. She was used to anger and force, not care and someone being gentle with her. 

The first time Alexia shows Eve the scars on her back with the intent of explaining to her what her past was like, she froze because, in her mind, she was not a pretty sight. She finally gained the courage to remove her shirt and show it off to Eve. For a few minutes, there was nothing said between the two, when suddenly, Alexia felt a warm hand start to trace the thin lines on her skin. For the first few moments, Alexia was tense, but soon, she began to relax at the touch, her eyes closing and she truly felt loved for the first time. It was really the first time she realized that Eve cared about her just as much as she cared about Eve.

10 years after the end of the Vampire-Lycan war

The creature scrambled to its feet, trying to bring more distance between itself and its pursuers. Gunshots sounded, echoed off the high walls of the alley the Lycan had entered in the hope to finally shake off the people who were chasing him. But he had come onto a dead-end. Nowhere to run, except maybe upwards onto the roof. The hum of a helicopter above his head, maybe not up to the roof. Footsteps, quickly coming in his direction, orders were shouted.

               ‘Don’t let it escape!’ ‘Steady, guys!’

               He could not only smell them and hear them, but he could see the beams of their flashlights as they neared the corner. He rolled his head and shoulders, his muscles tensed and then the next sound was a low growling, overlaid with the cracking of bones as the Lycan fully transformed.  

               His attackers, guns at the ready, rounded the corner and closed in on him steadily. They stopped a few feet away from him, and he waited, observed.

               ‘Don’t shoot. Stay calm, men. They need it alive.’

               Moments passed, the Lycan didn’t move and neither did the six men in front of him. Then, they began to close in on him again. A low growl rippled through his chest and he bared his teeth as a warning. One of the men lost it or he twitched out of fear and a shot went loose, hit the Lycan in the chest. The creature itself roared and snarled as the silver-nitrate bullet burrowed in its flesh.

               His first instinct was to fight, but when another bullet ripped into one of his hind legs, he decided against it. He turned around, climbed up the wall. More shots were fired, the bullets smashed into the bricks around him, one destroyed a window and another one hit him in the back. The Lycan grunted, but did not let the pain stop him. He reached the roof – and was immediately greeted by a silver-inlaid net and the chopper from before. The net scorched his body, the scent of burned flesh filled his nose. Before he could free himself from his trap, several tranquilizer darts pierced his skin and released their liquid into his bloodstream. He went down on one knee, then collapsed completely.

               ‘Careful!’

               ‘I hope, you didn’t overdose him. Our employers said they need him alive, not half dead!’

               ‘Look at him. He’s strong. He can take it.’

               ‘I hope you’re right.’

               The men loaded the Lycan into the chopper and secured him.

               Vampires and Lycans might have brokered a fragile peace, but for humans, the war had just begun.

15 internet moments in 2018 that made us scream 'NOPE'

We're only halfway through 2018, but it already appears to be the year of loudly yelling at the internet every 20 minutes or so.

From insensitive YouTube videos and mortifying viral challenges, to disturbing makeup trends and abhorrent tweets, the online world has truly tested our patience these past six months.

Here are 15 of the biggest NOPE moments the internet had to offer this year. They'll be tough to re-live for sure, but let them inspire us all to be better online contributors in the future.

1. Terrible, horrible, no good, very bad Logan Paul saga

YouTuber Logan Paul kicked off 2018 in one of the worst ways imaginable. On New Year's Eve, Paul shared a video with his 15 million subscribers that contained footage of an apparent victim of suicide he found in Japan's Aokigahara forest.

After the video received a serious amount of backlash, Paul apologized, claiming he "intended to raise awareness for suicide and suicide prevention," but in the weeks that followed the situation only grew worse.

A supercut of Paul's trip to Japan, which showed him severely disrespecting Japanese culture, went viral. He was dragged for an insensitive comment he left on Cardi B's Instagram, and admitted he wasn't making content with his younger fan base in mind. 

In wake of the vlog backlash, Paul did make an effort to advocate for suicide prevention by pledging to donate a total of $1 million to various suicide prevention organizations, but that didn't erase all the pain and disgust his careless video caused viewers. 

2. The painfully embarrassing Tide Pod Challenge

The year has already birthed a number of viral challenges, but none have proven to be as foolish and potentially deadly as the Tide Pod Challenge.

After teens started recording and sharing videos of themselves frying and "eating" poisonous soap-filled pouches known as Tide Pods, YouTube had to step in and take action. Tide Pods videos were pulled from the site, but the damage was done. 

Tide Pod inspired pizza, doughnuts, sushi, and shots were created, and things wound up getting so out of hand that stores had to LOCK UP THE DELICIOUS LOOKING DETERGENT. UGH! Humans sometimes, honestly!

3. Meals cooked in a MOUTH

The first half of 2018 was also when we learned about this chef who cooks meals using only her freaking mouth. She preps turkey stuffing, steak tartare, pancakes, and even a smoothie using her teeth and saliva, then uploads the videos to YouTube. We don't care if it's "performance art," it's A LOT to comprehend, so can we get a NOPE over here? 

4. When someone tried to make teeth nails a thing

Some bizarre beauty trends have popped up in 2018, but teeth nails took things way too far.

Instagram user @nail_sunny cursed feeds everywhere by sharing a video of regular old nails being transformed to resemble human teeth. The cringeworthy footage was set to Drake's "God's Plan," and IDK about you but I prefer the original music video a whole lot more.

5. Kanye West's tumultuous Twitter return

In 2018, Kanye West decided it was time to tweet again and fans had NO idea what they were in for.

Since April 13, 2018, when Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey welcomed the rapper back to the platform, Kanye has taken his 28 million followers on a dramatic roller coaster filled with tattoo designs, fashion photo shoots, the deepest of musings, album release dates, controversial comments on slavery, and a whole lot of love for Donald Trump.

Watching Kanye's feed over the past few months has truly been exhausting, even for his IRL friends.

6. Pelican takeover

A real-life horror film was shot at the 2018 Pepperdine University graduation when very large pelicans swarmed the ceremony and wreaked havoc on attendees.

Things got so intense that security had to step in, and, after all their intruding, the birds didn't even get diplomas.

7. Elon Musk hating on journalists

Grimes' boyfriend gave President Trump a rest and decided to share his own thoughts about the media via Twitter. Musk announced he plans to create "a media credibility rating site" that will allow the public to review the truth of individual articles, journalists, editors, and publications.

Despite the fact that his girlfriend's mom is a journalist, Musk carried on with his anti-media rant, explaining his belief that the journalist's lack of credibility is the reason Trump was elected in the first place. 🙃

8. The Nukebook

Japanese graphic designer Shusaku Takaoka shared a horrifying recreation of the iconic image from The Notebook that will probably ruin your life.

Normally, the photo from the romantic film, based off a Nicholas Sparks novel, shows stars Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams embracing in the rain. But Takaoka replaced the actors with Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un to give the internet the following painful sight.

9. BBC imagining the "perfect body"

In a terrifying video shared by BBC, anatomist Alice Roberts examined an advanced model of the perfect human body. It had enlarged eyes and ears, a chimp's lower back, emu legs, a breast-less chest, the heart of a dog, and lungs of a swan. And oh yeah, did we forget to mention A BABY POPPING OUT OF A MARSUPIAL POUCH? NOPE!

10. The IHOb hype

The International House of Pancakes (aka IHOP) really tested everyone's patience in 2018. The chain  restaurant, best known for its breakfast food, decided to unleash a long, drawn out, and very secretive marketing campaign in which it would re-brand from IHOP to IHOb.

Mashable figured out the "b" stood for burgers before the big announcement, but IHOP made everyone wait an entire week before officially revealing the burger news. So extra.

11. Millie Bobby Brown leaving Twitter

Twitter hit an especially low point when Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown left the platform in June after becoming the subject of a hateful meme.  

It all started when the hashtag #TakeDownMillieBobbyBrown — which was started in 2017 by the now suspended Twitter user @KelsFiona — resurfaced online. In response, people began sharing false stories, negative memes, and fake Snapchat photos claiming that Millie is homophobic.

After the 14-year-old anti-bullying advocate — yes, she has an entire side Twitter account dedicated to spreading love and kindness — endured a substantial amount of trolling she deactivated her account. How are those anti-harassment plans coming, @Jack?

12. BBQ Becky, Permit Patty, and Pool Patrol Paula

Meme's don't always stem from lighthearted events, and 2018 has proved that with BBQ Becky, Permit Patty, and Pool Patrol Paula. 

In May, an Oakland woman named Jennifer Schulte called the police on two black men who she believed were grilling in a park without a permit. After a video, which captured the woman's interaction with the men and phone call to the police went viral, Twitter users slammed her for racial profiling and she came to be known by meme-makers as "BBQ Becky." 

A month later, Alison Ettel called the police on an 8-year-old girl for selling water on a sidewalk. Ettel was also transformed into a meme, dubbed "Permit Patty," and her harsh actions against a child of color were condemned by many.

Less than a week later, a third white woman — 38-year-old Stephanie Sebby-Strempel (now known to the internet as "Pool Patrol Paula") — was charged with assaulting a 15-year-old black boy at a public pool after reportedly yelling racial slurs. A video showing part of the confrontation was posted to Facebook, and the #PoolPatrolPaula hashtag was started to raise awareness of her unacceptable behavior.

In light of this utterly disappointing trend, Mashable created a list of 5 things white people can do before calling the cops on a black person. Please read it.

13. Roseanne's racist remarks

In June, actress and comedian Roseanne Barr tweeted a racist remark about President Obama's former black female advisor, Valerie Jarrett.

Barr's tweet received a serious amount of backlash. In response, the actress deleted the tweet, claimed she was just joking, and then tried to blame Ambien for her actions. Ultimately, the tweet led to her show being cancelled, her agent dropping her, and a her taking a short leave of absence from the social media platform.

14. Marco Rubio complaining about the fucking "F-word"

After a shooting at the Capital Gazette left five dead, staff writer Selene San Felice appeared on CNN where she said the following: "I'm going to need more than a couple days of news coverage and some thoughts and prayers, because it's our whole lives have been shattered. And so thanks for your prayers, but I couldn't give a fuck about them if there's nothing else."

Instead of tweeting support for the press, Marco Rubio decided to rage tweet about people using the f-word a little too freely.

15. A whole lot of Donald Trump

In the first half of 2018 Donald Trump has had a LOT of not so great moments online.

Early in the year "girther" memes examining Trump's physique spread after the White House announced he's 6 feet, three inches tall, and weighs 239 pounds. There was that time he tried to convince everyone he's a "genius," tweeted incorrect facts, attempted to host the failed Fake News Awards, insulted many — including but certainly not limited to Jay-Z, Alec Baldwin, and Maxine Waters.

Crazy Maxine Waters, said by some to be one of the most corrupt people in politics, is rapidly becoming, together with Nancy Pelosi, the FACE of the Democrat Party. Her ranting and raving, even referring to herself as a wounded animal, will make people flee the Democrats!

Not to mention the mess of typos and deleted tweets the president's Twitter followers have had to endure.
