Songlight (The Torch Trilogy, #1) by Moira Buffini
US pub date - 9/3/24
I love a good fantasy, and with truly fond memories of reading some fantastic YA fantasy novels back in the late 80’s/early 90’s (there are some I’d love to read again but can’t remember titles), I will happily read either.
Engaging and compelling, Songlight pulled me in from the very first chapter and I read this, eager to see what next - and wow, I’m definitely looking forward to the next two titles.
Thank you to HarperCollins and NetGalley for the DRC

The Review: Round House Theatre’s Handbagged
By Ross
Even though the stereotypical British handbags are never mentioned by name in the Round House Theatre production of Moira Buffini’s Handbagged currently playing as part of 59E59 Theater’s Brits Off Broadwayseries, the iconic bag does make its metaphoric appearance almost…

HANDBAGGED by Moira Buffini Jack Studio Theatre, 28 February – 11 March ★★★★ Even after all these years, the sight is enough to silence an audience: the blue power suit, the backcombed hair, the stern demeanour. Then the appearance of one of recent history’s most instantly recognisable figures provokes another thought – will the actor be able to nail the voice? In Sue Higginson’s remarkable performance we have the embodiment of the aged Thatcher, which sets the tone for Dan Armour’s enjoyable revival of Moira Buffini’s 2013 play. Based around the Prime Minister’s weekly visits to the Queen, these undocumented meetings have often been the source of intrigue. And we have eleven years’ worth to get through, which covers a period of extraordinary political change in British history. We also have two versions of Thatcher and the Queen. Sarah Tortell’s younger Thatcher is more strident; the older at once more unrepentant but also more vulnerable, haunted by the past. Fiona McGahren’s younger Queen is fighting battles for her family and ‘her’ country and Commonwealth; whereas the older Queen, played with relish by Pauline Armour, is more mischievous and demob happy in her twilight years. This device enables the journeys of these two enigmatic figures to be captured and allows reflection on how the two women fared after the fall of Thatcher. Along with the main characters dual interpretations, a roll call of other key political figures of the 1980s are shared between Howie Ripley and Mark Steere. Yet whilst imitation is important in the production, accuracy is not always the goal. Ripley and Steere hilariously fight over who will play Neil Kinnock, offering competing impressions of the doomed Labour leader’s Welsh tones, with differing levels of accuracy. It is easy to forget what a satirist’s dream the 1980s was on both sides of the Atlantic, and the production takes full advantage of the colourful figures of the age. The portrayal of Nancy Reagan is a highlight of one of the evening’s many comic moments. The play speeds through the decade. Against Toby Reeves simple but effective set of golden, fractured Union Jacks, the characters debate the state of the nation and Commonwealth, whilst the older versions contest the accounts offered. With no official records of these weekly meetings, the play utilises what scant official material there is very well: Elizabeth’s few public pronouncements, including a couple of notoriously ambiguous Christmas Day Addresses, which provide some insight into her true, possibility anti-Thatcherite views. It is an apt time to revive HANDBAGGED. Once more we are in a time of economic uncertainty and drastic political change, with another grammar school educated female Prime Minister who also has, for the time being, ‘swept the Eton Boys away’. But there is a limit to the parallels. The monarch is not as active in public life as she was in the 1980s and a great deal of the mystique around the Royal family has dissipated. A danger in the structure is that it has so much to plough through. It is a shame there is a slight imbalance, with Thatcher’s early years and decline and fall having so much prominence, at the expense of the (albeit brief) ‘boom years’ in the mid-1980s, when the oft mentioned barrow boys in the city were in their pomp and helped Thatcher to her record third election victory in 1987. Without fully capturing this brief but significant period of optimism, it is hard to fully see why Thatcher ever won at all or what her appeal may have been. However, everyone’s take on history is different. Indeed, in a piece about the nature of memory and interpretation, the characters make great play with the dangers and pitfalls of summarising so much in so little time. There are frequent requests to ‘get on with it’ or challenges over omissions. HANDBAGGED also succeeds against the odds in capturing a compassionate take on Thatcher’s emotional journey. With Higginson’s Thatcher becoming engulfed in the fog of dementia, along with Ronald Reagan, these two giants of 1980s politics fall victim to that most cruel but common of conditions, which can affect anyone. Pleading for the dead Dennis, memorably played here by Steere, we wonder whether she was perhaps human after all. He graduated from three cohorts of the Royal Court Theatre’s Young Writers Programme.
