Cecily loved when the family gathered for dinner, even if it was at the parlor table so their father could fit in some work while he ate with the children. Their favorite dinners involved their father reciting the latest newsprint aloud as they feasted. While Edmund didn’t want his children to attend school, he heavily believed in the power of knowledge and education. Although they were sheltered, he expected their minds to be just as sharp. To him, it seemed like a good exchange, but it was different for each child. 

Eugene didn’t see any use in leaving the manor. He cherished the comfort of the manor, even amidst the presence of bothersome siblings and a father who didn’t understand him in the same ways his mother did. Josiah and Elaine sat in wonder and fear at the stories and articles their father read to them. Still, they longed to see it all firsthand, tired of their surroundings adorned with tearing wallpaper and dusty, unkempt floorboards. For once they’d love to run past the gate, unveiling what lay beyond the hill that blocked their view of the town. For Cecily, the thought of leaving Windenburg frightened her as much as the thought of staying did. She dreamt of running to her father’s railway station and hopping into a train cart with nothing but her shoes and stockings. In those dreams, she wouldn’t get off until reaching Harlem. 

Edmund never forgot the stories his aunt told about her travels after being sheltered from the truth for so long. By giving his own children access to any information they sought, he believed he found a workaround that kept his children from resenting him and his concerns for their safety. Of course, he wouldn’t know whether it worked to his liking or not until much later on.  

On some days, the contents of the newspaper were tame, usually informing the people of town gatherings, new openings, technological advancements reaching St. Vaughn, mobile shipments delivered into town, performances at the theater, reports on stock market activities, commentary on racial, social, and political issues, and more. Recently, all that’s taken up the front pages was news concerning the escalating conflict in Europe. Anthony Biggs, head of “St. Vaughn Times Courier”, spent the last month using entire columns to spread his fears and speculations concerning Black Americans’ alleged role in America’s impending involvement in the war. 

The only times Edmund left the manor was when he was needed at the bank or railway station, and he’d seen firsthand how alarmed Biggs made his coworkers and employees. He refrained from reading those columns and reassured the children that such conflict wouldn’t reach them. He always said Windenburg sat with a shield around it, but Cecily knew he didn’t truly believed that. 

The highlight of these dinners came when Edmund would test their attentiveness by quizzing them on the material he had just read. Everyone longed to prove that they’d been listening and would sometimes eagerly volunteer to answer before the questions were entirely voiced. When Josiah did so, answering his father’s question confidently yet incorrectly, Eugene couldn’t help but burst out in mocking laughter from across the table. All eyes turned to him as he leaned back and held his stomach in pain from his tormenting and obsessive mirth.

Cecily scowled at her older brother in defense of her youngest. “Is cruelty marked in your blood?” It was as if he loved to bicker. No day went by without a snide comment from his end.

“Why should I be blamed when it’s his words that are as senseless as he is because he can’t pick up a book?” Eugene argued. 

“He made a mistake. You don’t need to mock him.”

“It’s foolishness. He’s a fool.”

“You walk that back!”

Their feud continued until Edmund finally shouted “Enough!” He turned to his eldest son in exhaustion. “One day you’ll regret ridiculing your brother and sisters as much as you do. Family is all you have, and you need to learn to cherish one another.”

“I’d rather choke on this repulsive food than pretend I’d ever love them,” Eugene sneered.

Edmund made every effort to suppress his rising anger, but his attempts were futile. “I promise, boy, you won’t get far with that hateful mouth of yours. Now go’on upstairs since you’re too superior to eat with your family and treat us with respect.”

The Third Estate: The Bourgeois & Working Classes

Far from the neatly packaged term of "those who work" that described the third feudal order, the Third Estate of Bourbon France was a messy collection of everyone from the wealthiest non-nobles in the kingdom to the most impoverished beggars. It represented over 90% of the population, but the experiences of those in the upper tiers of the estate were vastly different from those in the bottom tiers. The first subgroup comprised the upper and middle classes known as the bourgeoisie, while the second refers to the working class and the unemployed. During the Revolution, this latter group became known as the sans-culottes (literally "without culottes"), a name denoting their poverty, since only the nobility and wealthy bourgeois wore culottes, fashionable silk knee-breeches.

The bourgeoisie was a steadily growing class. By 1789, about 2 million people could fall into this category, more than double the amount that there had been half a century prior. They controlled a massive share of national wealth; most industrial and commercial capital, almost one-fifth of all French private wealth, was bourgeois-owned, as was a quarter of land and a significant portion of government stock. The wealthiest bourgeois lived lives of luxury, not too dissimilar to the lifestyles of nobles. It was in vogue for a bourgeois family hoping to climb the social ladder to dress in silks, drink coffee imported from the West Indies, and decorate their homes with prints and wallpaper. According to scholar William Doyle, it was primarily bourgeois capital that built theatres in Paris and Bordeaux, just as it was the bourgeois who funded newspapers, colleges, and public libraries.

Doyle credits the rise of the bourgeois in the 18th century to the sudden "extraordinary commercial and industrial expansion” of that period (Doyle, 23). The fortunes of bourgeois families mostly originated from business and were secured through safe investments such as land. Besides Protestants and Jews, to whom social mobility was limited, bourgeois families rarely stayed in the business that enriched them for more than one generation, and money not invested in land would go toward superior education for their children. With this education, "the way was open to the professions, where mercantile origins could be forgotten" (Doyle, 24).

Reaching this status was seen as the goal for many bourgeois families, who would often stagnate on this comfortable, middle-class social rung. Yet not all bourgeois families were satisfied stopping at a middle-class status and, for those who had the money, higher ambitions were indeed attainable. As the financial crisis was becoming increasingly dire during the reign of Louis XVI, the government sold about 70,000 public offices, representing a combined worth of 900 million livres. Some of these venal offices were ennobling, others were hereditary once purchased, but all of them dramatically increased one's social standing. By the means of purchasing ennobling offices, over 10,000 bourgeois bought their way into the nobility during the 18th century.

House Of Eternal Day for Curlos. I know it's not Christmas yet, but Toy Day in Animal Crossing is so cute. I had a lot of fun doing this one. First up was the yard. I wanted the house and yard to look really festive and fun. On the left side of the yard, I put up a trio of Christmas trees with the big one in the middle and a couple of small ones on the side. I added a few snow people and snowflake decorations. On the right side of the yard, I added a rainbow Christmas tree with decorative gift boxes and a sled near the tree. I put cute reindeer decorations and added snowflake decorations to match the other side. I used tall ornaments for the border path to add to the colorful displays and a wreath on the door.

Inside, I made the living area and kitchen space look really festive like a holiday party. The Toy Day wallpaper was perfect for this because it's animated with the lights twinkling. I used the wood block flooring because it complemented the wallpaper really well. I made the kitchen have fresh baked goods like cookies and bread with festive looking drinks. I put a couple tables to the side filled with a variety of foods. In the living room area, I put a big Christmas tree with a few toys under the tree. I added a fireplace with a snowglobe, candle, and stockings hung above the fireplace. I put near the sitting area with cute sofas and a coffee table. I decorated the small table with a cute pinecone tree and put a little cup of coffee next to it. I added the Toy Day throw rug to tie the whole room together making a perfect holiday party space.

Upstairs, I made a cozy Winter bedroom with a bathroom for Curlos. I used the snowy wallpaper as an accent wall to make it look like there were windows to show it snowing outside. I used the dark herringbone wallpaper for the rest of the room to give the room a nice look of warmth. I used dark brown brick flooring because it looked nice with the wallpaper. Using the partition walls gives the feel of a separate room with the bathroom. I added a patchwork bed with the country quilt pattern and I put a cute snowflake throw rug under the bed. I added a wooden dresser with a mini tree and a glowing star clock. I put a little side table with a festive ornament lamp and a cute ornament mobile on the wall. I put in a couple of wooden bookshelves and a study desk with a chair. I thought it would be nice for the bedroom to have a small Christmas tree. I added a nice blue sofa and a big pinecone tree next to it with a festive garland on the wall. I then added a nice red Persian rug which completed the entire room. Curlos is now ready for Toy Day and all the holiday parties!

Make Addy’s House With Me!!

So.. I made Addy a house. More like a room, but same difference. While this house isn’t completely modeled on Addy’s main house in her books (the house owned and managed by the Golden’s), as I wanted to use this as a photography set some of my other dolls (Kirsten, Kit), it still models after what a house could of looked like.

And because I like to talk, I will give you a not so concise tutorial on how I made this set. This project took about ten days. Sorry for no “keep reading,” I’m on mobile.

You’ll Need:

Thick Cardboard (I used three big boxes that were used to ship dolls)

A cereal box (or a similar weight of card board)

Card stock. I used an entire stack in the printing of all the different wood pieces. Printer paper tends to wrinkle and tear, it’s not ideal for making a photo set that you’ll eventually be putting doll furniture on.

Acrylic paint. I used two dark browns and a reddish brown.

Modge Podge. I used a matte all purpose modge podge and then a glossy paper modge podge. I definitely recommend using matte all purpose, it was much easier to work with and well.. not annoyingly shiny. I ended up using two full bottles, so you will need a lot.

Tacky glue. Make sure it dries CLEAR.

Two clear sheet protectors.

Duck tape. Or weird, off brand washi tape that your weird slavic grandma gave you.

Yarn.

A good pair of scissors. Or a craft knife if you’re fancy.

A sharp pencil to poke holes in things.

A color printer (or you can go to the store and buy paper that looks like wood, but that can get expensive)

Free stock photos and/or digital download scrap book papers. I got the floor of my set from as a digital download from an Etsy seller, and everything else was a free stock photo.

Paint brushes. You’ll need a large one for modge podge, and a couple smaller ones for the paint. Make sure you don’t like the large paint brush because it will get ruined. Even if you wash it.

A ruler.

A dark permanent marker

Something sharp to poke a hole into the tacky glue lid. And keep poking a hole in it because it WILL glue itself shut.

First off, you need the walls and floor, or else you will have no house. Unless you have really large boxes and are able to cut an entire wall from one card board piece, you will need to duck tape a couple pieces of cardboard together in order to make a wall. You’ll need two side walls, a floor and a back wall. I didn’t take measurements of my walls and floor because I was generally just trying to work with what cardboard I had.

Double check and make sure your walls are tall enough for your AG, preferably a couple inches higher. If you’re planning to put specific furniture into your set, make sure it fits in comfortably!! I checked the floor space with an AG bed I had on hand.

Make sure the walls are sturdy. I promise that you’re wasting less ducktape by wrapping it around a couple times, then you would be if you needed to fix your set everytime you wanted to use it. Make sure you can move it, and walk past it without it coming undone and dying.

One of my favorite things about my set is that I made it so it can fold in on itself. I do not have a lot of space for sets, so the fact that I can fold it up when I’m done is great (not to mention means that I can have more than one set). Now that you have your walls, it’s time to poke some holes with your sharp pencil.

This is me attaching the floor and the back wall. I marked out how many inches across the two pieces of cardboard were, and then from that I decided where to poke my holes. You can eyeball this, but that makes me anxious. Don’t poke your holes to close to the edge, or else the cardboard might rip (not fun). You’ll want to do the same with your two side walls, although you will be attaching the side walls to the back wall, not the floor.

After you poke all your holes, you’ll want to string the walls together with yarn or twine. Make sure it’s tight enough that the walls stand on their own without flopping, but loose enough so that it doesn’t tear the cardboard, and you can fold it up with ease. I left a generous amount of string left with each “hinge” in case I ever need to tinker with it, and I just tied each “hinge” with a double knotted bow.

Thus began my long relationship with modge podge. You’ll need to modge podge the wallpaper and flooring to the card board, which is very time consuming and boring, so make sure you have something to watch. Be sure what you’re using is of a heavier weight than printer paper, or it will wrinkle. And tear. And then you will cry. Don’t be overly concerned with white spots, or small places where the cardboard shows, because you can go over those later with paint.

**BE SURE YOUR PATTERNS LINE UP OR YOU WILL CRY**

Wow!! The modge podge is done!! That only took a week!! As you can see, I added some texture and touched things up with paint. (The popsicle sticks are not supposed to be there, long story)

Now for my other favorite part, the windows.

I wanted to be able to change the scene in my windows, so I used clear sheet protectors!! I cut it to be roughly 9in x 9in. Make sure you don’t accidentally glue the sheet protectors shut. That wouldn’t be fun. I made the window frame out of singular wood planks from the photo I used for the floor, and I glued each one to thick cardboard.

You’ll want to tacky glue the window frame together, and then to the wall. BE SURE NOT TO GLUE THE WINDOW SHUT WHILE DOING THIS!!!

For the background, I just found a scene on Google and glued to to a cereal box weight cardboard, before sliding it into the sheet protector.

That should lead you to having a really cool house for your dolls!! I can’t wait to fill this one with furniture. For reading (or scrolling past this long post) have a picture of my cat interfering:
