Lost Touch

Summary: When a social experiment goes wrong, Lauren Luthor-Danvers (you) an outstanding commercial and television editor must confront her pain to accept the harsh reality of her life.

Warning: Angst, Grief, Fluff

A/n: I saw a video called "People Call Someone They've Lost Touch With" and this is my take on this.

Lena Luthor x reader, Kara Danvers x reader, Supercorp

Word Count: 929

As an editor, several hours of the day are dedicated to being in dark rooms in front of three to four screens. With commercials taking two days, 30 minute TV shows taking an average of two weeks and hour shows taking an average of four to six weeks it crumbles any time you have for yourself.

Like the famous Luthor, Lauren spends her nose in her equivalent of spreadsheets, blueprints and prototypes. She had let slip that she had a week off to her Girl of Steel and blackhole of a mother and now, she was buying take out from numeral places.

The young Luthor-Danvers knew her Kryptonian mother well and brought two wagons to balance and hold bags and boxes of a little bit of everything she could think of.

With both hands behind her back and the opportunity to not be in front of a screen, she wondered about the concrete jungle above her, the electricity box cars below her, the busy mammals around her and the white statue with a pink heart and a sign that read You've got a moment?

The editor stepped closer towards the sign and finished reading Call someone you've lost touch with and tell them what they mean to you. She shifted her wagons to park beside the statue. For a moment she focused on the birds tweeting, the wind tickling the leaves and the laughter that echoed from neighboring cafes.

She grabbed the public keypad phone and dialed a number she hasn't called in eight years.

Lauren wasn't expecting her call to be returned. She was met with a high pitch ending to the word hello. Her breath stuttered as her eye clouded.

"Hi... you don't know me but this number used to belong to my mother. I uh saw a sign in the middle of New York that said to call someone I've lost touch with and tell them what they mean to me. I know it isn't um the same but it was nice to have someone pick up you know." Lauren sniffed and wiped the streams with the back of her hand. "Uh thank you for picking up, bye."

"Hold on sweetie. Now I may not be your mother but you can talk to me as if I was your mother." The lady on the other side spoke calmly. "What's your name sweetheart?"

"Lauren, but my mom used to call me baby girl."

"Okay baby girl what do you want to tell mama?" The young girl's breath hitched.

"Hi mama. I love and miss you so much. I miss you holding me when I was upset cause there have been a lot of that since you passed. I regret not coming out to you when you were alive, I got a lot of love around me but I wished you were there. I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry for everything that happened and I can't forgive myself for bailing on our mother-daughter vacation. If I had gone, the accident wouldn't have got you." Lauren sobbed and took a few minutes to breathe. "I'm sorry it has taken me so long to talk to you again. After the accident I believed if I didn't visit your grave and didn't call, you would still be at home... I got accepted and graduated NYU, I moved to New York and I have a beautiful loft. Jeju and the twins visit when they can and Holidays are still spent at Grandma Eliza's. Jeju is still the editor in chief at Catco and still saves the day. Liam took over L-Corp... L-Corp is seen as a force for good now." You cried. "Lucas is a professional MLB player he's currently playing on the LA Dodgers with the number 24, he donates most of his money to the foundations at the annual L-Corp Fundraiser Galas. I edit commercial and television shows, I'm able to give voices to people who don't normally have them. I hope you're proud of me. We all are doing okay. I love you mom."

"Baby girl your mom is not dead because of you, she's at peace because she has an amazing daughter. I know she is proud of you and forgives you for not visiting and calling. If you ever need to you can call me alright?"

"Alright. Thank you."

"Until next time sweet girl."

Lauren hung up the phone and wiped her tears away. Her eyes and nose matched the color of the wagons she has. She reached her apartment building, rode to her floor and twisted the door to her loft.

Her blond mother stood from the couch and opened her arms. The handles of the wagon bounced on the floor as the youngest of Luthor-Danvers family ran to her mother.

Kara held you tightly and swayed back and forth with a hand on the back of her daughter's head. "She's so proud of you." She whispered.

"But I'm not the engineer she wanted me to be."

"I know she is proud of you," Kara's blue eyes stared right into the same emerald Lena had. "because I am proud of you. You're making art, using your voice, telling stories and is every bit yourself. The very best parts of Lena are in you. She loves you." Kara kissed your forehead and pulled you in.

A light touch wrapped around Lauren’s shoulder. Too delicate to be Kara’s. Lena, invisible to both girls in the room, wrapped her wings around her wife and her daughter. Her daughter may have lost touch with her but she was never had.

Begin

After Marinette told Alya her identity she ended up staying the night while Marinette explained everything. After hours of comforting on Alya’s end, Marinette was starting to feel better.

Alya hugged her and told her everything would work out as her best friend cried into her arms. Maybe love wasn’t on the table right now, but she’d always have her.

Eventually they fell asleep, Alya holding her tight as Marinette snored softly. In that moment, with Alya’s warmth surrounding her, Marinette truly believed everything would be okay.

Unfortunately Marinette awoke with a new problem on her mind.

“Alya, how am I supposed to tell Chat that I revealed my identity?” She panicked. “He’s going to be so heartbroken. He’s going to think I don’t trust him!”

“Calm down girl, you stress yourself out too much. Just take a deep breath.” She gave Marinette a moment to breathe. “Chat loves you, there’s no denying that. Sure he might be hurt, but you’ve been so overwhelmed he’ll just have to try to understand. You’re under a lot of pressure Marinette, it was only a matter of time until you broke. I’m just glad I was there before it got too bad. You’ll be okay.” Alya said this last part as she pulled Marinette into another tight hug.

“I love you and I’m here for you.” The brunette said for the thousandth time since the day before.

Marinette relaxed into the hug. “You’re right. I love you too, Alya. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

Marinette began tearing up again, but she was determined not to cry anymore. She had Alya now. As a team there was no way she’d be alone anymore.

For the first time in a while Ladybug was early to patrol. As she paced she repeated Alya’s words to herself.

“I’ll be okay, I’ll be okay, I’ll be okay.” She mumbled.

Just then she heard a thump behind her. Even now, his presence calmed her.

She turned around with a smile.

“Looks like I’ve attracted a stray.”

“You know I can never resist your pull M’lady.” He replied, taking her hand to place a kiss on it.

She pulled it back giggling.

“Sit for a moment?” She asked. Her nerves were returning but she was determined to keep her cool.

“Something wrong bug? You’re early and I know you well enough to recognize that look on your face.” Chat sat beside her and looked into her eyes expectantly.

“Yes? I don’t really know.” She let out a nervous laugh. “Depends on how you take it.”

She looked back at him to see him as confused as ever.

“I’m sure you’ve noticed how different I’ve been since I became guardian. With juggling school work, superhero stuff, and my guardian responsibilities, I’ve had to lie to the people closest to me and it’s made me more absentminded than ever.

I’ve been missing patrols, doing work last minute, ruining relationships, and losing my friends trust. Yesterday I hit my breaking point.”

“M’lady if this is you apologizing it’s okay. I understand. If you need to talk I can be here for you too. Sure, your actions at the movies were a little odd, but nothing to worry about.” Chat said with a reassuring smile.

“No Chat, it’s not about that, although I am sorry about that and in a way this is leading to an apology, but for something entirely different. Yesterday I-“ Ladybug tried to figure out the best way to tell him without hurting him. “I revealed my identity to my best friend. I just felt so hopeless and I needed someone to take some of the weight off my shoulders. Kitty I’m so sorry I can’t tell you, you have no idea how much I want to.”

Chat sat there for a moment, processing the information he was just told.

“Wow. I just always thought we’d be the first to know. At least that’s what you always said.” Chat tried to mask his hurt but it was evident on his face. “Did it make you feel better?”

“A lot. All of my responsibilities feel just a little more manageable. Are you mad at me?” She asked looking alway and crossing her arms to hold herself.

Chat saw how worried she looked and decided he couldn’t hold it against her. Anything for her to be happy. Still, he couldn’t let her go scot free.

“I could never be mad at you bug.” He said softly. “You did what you needed to do. I know you wouldn’t reveal your identity unless it was your last resort.” He pulled her into a hug. “Although I have to say, it seems a bit unfair that you can reveal your identity to someone and I can’t.”

“Chat, we can’t reveal our identities to each other.” She pulled from the hug. “It’s just not safe right now.”

Though she still looked serious, she looked far less stressed than before. That was a win in Chat’s book.

“Okay, then what if I revealed it to someone close to me? Someone I trust and know would never tell anyone? Fair is fair after all.” Chat nudged Ladybug’s shoulder.

“Uh actually Chat I don’t know if-“

Chat jumped up. “Really! This is great thank you so much bugaboo!”

He was practically hopping up and down when Ladybug stood up.

“I thought I told you to stop calling me that.” She teased, grateful he wasn’t hurt. Maybe that is a good idea, she thought. This way she could subtly let Chat know she trusted him.

“You know you love it. Now come on, don’t we have a city to patrol?”

And with that he bounded off onto the next building, leaving Ladybug to laugh softly to herself before joining him.

Adrien got back home that night excited. He jumped through he window and de-transformed immediately.

“Plagg! I get to tell someone my identity.” Adrien flopped onto his bed to stare at the ceiling. “Who should I tell?”

“I don’t know! I’m not in any way apart of this I just want my food.” Plagg phased into the safe full of cheese and came back out with a large wedge of camembert.

“Should I tell Nino?” Adrien asked, ignoring the kwami’s previous statement. “Actually I don’t know, he’s dating Alya. What if she accidentally lets something slip on the Ladyblog? I need someone trustworthy, someone who always puts others first, someone… someone just like Ladybug!” His eyes lit up as he came to a realization.

“That’s it Plagg I know who I’m gonna tell!”

Plagg laughed loudly. “Sounds like a great idea kid.” He said before delving back into his cheeses.

Adrien went to bed that night shaking with excitement.

The next day Adrien could hardly wait. He ate his breakfast faster than normal and was already waiting at the door when The Gorilla showed up to drive him to school.

When he arrived, he joined Nino in front of the school and looked around.

“Hey bud, what’s up are you looking for something?” Nino asked as he noticed Adrien’s wandering eyes.

“Have you seen Marinette? I want to tell her something.” Adrien said nervously.

Nino subtly jabbed his thumb at a bush towards the left.

Adrien turned to the bush and heard a loud rustle before Marinette tumbled out with a yelp. Alya walked from behind the bush and gave them a small wave.

Adrien turned to Nino with a confused look before shrugging and walking over.

Adrien put his hand out to help Marinette off the ground and she took it with a deep blush.

“Hey Alya, mind if I borrow Marinette for a minute?” He asked. He realized he hadn’t let go of Marinette’s hand yet and adopted a slight bush of his own before dropping it.

“Of course you can Adrien!” Marinette let out a squeak as Alya said this.

Alya gave Marinette a pat on the shoulder and chuckled before walking over to Nino.

Now that they were alone Adrien’s excitement turned to anxiety. He was so nervous he felt like he was going to throw up.

“So…uh Marinette,” he began as he took in her demeanor. She seemed as nervous as him. This made him feel a little better. “I need to tell you something but don't freak out. I can trust you, right?”

Marinette looked stunned but she gave a small nod. Adrien took a deep breath.

“I’m Chat Noir.”

A beat of silence.

“Hey Mari, you okay?” Adrien asked, worried he’d broken her.

He put his hand on her shoulder and she jolted, now fully back.

“Sorry sorry I’m fine.” She rushed out.

“So I can trust you to keep this a secret?” Adrien’s anxiety began to return, even though he knew Marinette would never tell anyone and this was an irrational fear.

“You can always trust me Adrien.” She said with a fondness she had never used with him before. “Though I have to ask, why tell me? Why not Nino or Chloe? They seem closer to you.”

Now it was Adrien’s turn to blush. “Well when I thought of who I wanted to tell, I figured why not tell the most Ladybug person I knew?” He said sheepishly.

“And you’re in love with Ladybug, right?” She asked as though confirming.

Adrien blushed harder. “Well, yeah.”

“Okay well thank you for trusting me Adrien, really it means a lot to me.” She pulled him into a hug.

“We should probably head into school, the bells about to ring.” She said dragging him over to their pair of friends a couple feet away.

“What’d you say to Adrien?” Alya whispered to her once they sat down. “It’s weird. He was actually the blushing mess this time, rather than you.”

“I can’t say too much because he told me not to tell anyone.” Marinette confessed. “But let’s just say it solves a few of my problems.”

Alya looked more confused than ever and Marinette just giggled.

Marinette was playing it cool, but on the inside her brain was jumping hurdles.

Adrien and Chat Noir were the same person?

It wasn’t completely unbelievable, she’d heard Adrien tell horrible puns before and Chat was certainly cute enough to be a model, but it was still a shock to her system. At least now she could finally stop denying her feeling for Chat.

Still, what were the chances after she specifically told him not to reveal his identity to her he’d do just that. There’s no way it was on purpose thought, Marinette doubted he’d have kept his cool of he knew who she really was.

Which meant there was only one logical explanation. Plagg put him up to this. Call it entertainment, call it annoyance at their continued antics, it was most definitely in Plagg’s nature.

And yet Marinette still couldn’t shake the feeling that this was just fate leading them on their way.

Marinette tried to talk to Adrien all day, but there was never really a chance to talk about anything of substance due to the continued presence of other people. She just couldn’t find a time to catch him alone.

In the end she opted to drop by his house later as Ladybug and let him know the truth, while also taking the time to chew out Plagg. She couldn’t wait to see the look on his face when he realized his mistake.

As she watched Adrien walk to his car she called, “See you later Adrien!”

He seemed a little confused but gave her a well meaning wave anyway.

“Do you think Chat Noir would love me if he knew my identity?” Marinette asked.

She decided to walk Alya home that day, and was starting to rethink her decision to reveal her identity to Chat Noir.

“Have you seen that boy? He’s head over heels for you. I doubt anything could change that. Does this have something to do with your conversation last night? You never told me how it went you know.” Alya’s reporter side began to show.

Marinette loved Alya for that. Her quizzical smart nature was what had attracted Marinette to her in the first place. Marinette smiled at her friend as she thought about that.

“It went well...” Marinette began, choosing her word wisely. She didn’t want to accidentally let Alya know that Chat Noir had revealed himself to her today. “We came up with a resolution to show him that I still trusted him, and I think he understands a little bit.”

“Girl that’s amazing! I told you you’d have nothing to worry about.” Alya squeezed her hand as she said this, and Marinette couldn’t help but appreciate her warmth.

“Yeah yeah I know. You’re always right because you’re super smart and the best friend ever.” Marinette laughed along with her brunette friend.

“And don’t you forget it.” Alya stopped in front of her house. “Call me if you need me okay?”

Marinette nodded, Alya kissed her cheek, and that was that.

Marinette decided to take the long way home that day. The longer she took to get home, the longer she had to decide what to do about Chat.

As if reading her mind she heard Tikki from her purse.

“What are you going to do about Adrien, Marinette?” Tikki had taken the Alya situation pretty well. Still Marinette wasn’t sure how Tikki would feel about her plans.

“Well, if I know his identity why shouldn’t he know mine? I am the guardian after all, and he’s my partner.” She decided.

“I’m not going to push you, because it is your choice. But if this isn’t absolutely necessary why do it?”

“I just feel like he deserves to know. He’s trusted me blindly for so long, it’s time for me to do the same for him.”

Tikki nodded and they were quiet for the rest of the way home.

Once she greeted her parents and headed upstairs, she went up to her balcony and called out her transformation phrase.

It was getting dark, so she knew Adrien would be home from fencing by then.

As she leaped across buildings she attempted to calm her nerves.

This was her goofy partner as well as her longtime crush. He was both of her favorite boys in one. No big deal.

There was one thing she was sure of though. Nothing she could say would change how he felt about her.

This comforted her as she neared his mansion.

Adrien was still riding off the rush of the day. Marinette seemed to take his confession in stride. Maybe this was the push their friendship needed.

Overall, he was glad he chose her to tell. That was one thing he would never regret.

He entered his room after the long day and threw off his white over shirt, Plagg along with it.

“Hey! Be careful with me I’m not a toy!” He complained, zooming back over to Adrien with his arms crossed.

“Sorry Plagg I forgot you were there to be honest.” Adrien sighed zoned out and laid out on his bed.

“I take it you enjoyed telling pigtails?” Plagg chuckled.

This snapped Adrien back. “Yeah I did actually, why?” Adrien said, voice full of suspicion.

“Oh I’m sure you’ll find out soon enough.” As he said this, Plagg phased back into the safe after a quick look over his shoulder.

Right as Adrien was about to demand what that was about, he heard a tapping on his window.

Confused, he turned to see Ladybug.

He ran over to open it immediately, almost tripping over his feet.

“Ladybug! What are you doing here?” He asked, helping her down from the window ledge.

“Is it wrong to visit my favorite civilian?”

Adrien blushed, earning a laugh from the hero.

“I actually came here to talk to you about something Adrien.”

“Oh?” Adrien was more confused than ever. Ladybug had never stopped by before, why would she start now?

“I understand you know Marinette Dupain Cheng?”

Adrien’s heart dropped. Had Marinette really revealed his identity to Ladybug?

“Listen Ladybug, whatever she told you I’m sure I can explain! I promise I didn’t think she’d tell anyone, much less have to means to tell you.” Adrie felt so guilty. He shouldn’t have told anyone. Now who knows who else knew his secret.

Adrien was shocked to hear Ladybug laugh.

“No one told me anything, Mon Chaton. At least not on purpose.” She walked over to his bed and pat the spot beside him. Still in a daze, he sat down without a word.

“Tikki, spots off.” She said quietly.

There was a flash of pink and there on his bed was none other than Marientte.

Adrien gasped, eyes widening and jaw dropping. “I- wow I had no idea when I told you I swear!” He managed to get out.

“I know. I assumed Plagg had something to do with it.” Marinette said, looking around for the black kwami.

At that Plagg came out from his spot.

“All I’m guilty of is not stopping it. It was all his idea. You guys needed to hurry up and tell each other anyway. I was getting bored.” Plagg huffed.

Tikki flew over to him and pulled him away, muttering about the importance of secret identities and his irresponsibility.

Adrien turned back to the girl. “So you told Alya I’m guessing?”

“Not on purpose. Right after she and the other girls got akumatized the other day, she asked me what was wrong and I broke down and told her.” Marinette replied, looking at her twiddling hands.

Adrien took one of her hands, her eyes meeting his again.

“Well now you have two people here to support you Mari. You won’t have to hold this weight by yourself anymore. You have us.”

Marinette teared up but wiped her eyes quickly before anything came out.

“You know this doesn’t change how I feel about you right? I know there’s still Luka, but I can’t sit here and pretend that my feelings haven’t only grown stronger knowing the truth.” Adrien confessed, searching her eyes for any immediate reaction.

What he hadn’t expected to see was the amount of love that filled them.

“Oh kitty, it’s always been you. Whether you were Adrien or Chat Noir, you’ve held my heart.” Her hand went up to cradle his face as she said this. “I wasn’t sure how you’d feel about my identity so I didn’t want to push anything on you, but I’ve felt something toward you ever since that day in the rain, ever since I realized how I could never truly be Ladybug without you. I love you, Adrien.”

Adrien looked shocked yet again. First finding out her identity and then this? Adrien couldn’t believe his luck.

Without another word he leaned in to kiss her.

As his eyes closed he felt her soft lips meet his. They were warm and tasted of chocolate. He could smell her hair, which was strawberry scented. He did everything he could to take this moment in, remember it to the fullest extent, but his mind was turned to putty by her touch. Her hand still cradled his face and he brought and arm around her to pull her closer.

When they pulled apart to catch a breath, all Adrien could think of was how his skin was still hot where her hand had been, how his stomach was still fluttering looking at her dilated eyes and freshly kissed lips.

“I love you too, my buginette.”

Hi! It appears to me that when season 1 aired everyone loved Thomas Astruc and now that season 2 is slowly coming and we have many other things ml related, people are getting tired and more irritated by him. what do you think?

What do I think? Weeeell, Im pissed, you know.

Let me show you why I and other people are getting dissapointed of creator of MLB:

1. There was a time even before 1 season had finished when people asked Thomas for more info about characters like surnames (at least, we got about it later), heights, birthdays and maybe something else.

A date of his response is 26 November 2015:

Much later when we finally saw some eps of 2nd season fans asked about it again. Its quite understandable because we found out that Marinette was 13 years old in the first season, but we also had an ep with Alix’ 15th one while they are classmates. It gives food for thoughts, huh?

So Thomas was asked wasnt it some kind of mistake.

Well…….

Everything would be kinda fair, but if a writer doesnt want to mention and show someone’s age, they wont mention it at all, right? So Thomas just confused everyone.

But based on his second response, Adrien can be 16 and Max 13 years old, for example. Why not? Maybe I like this version.

Also its just rude. You dont have to say characters’ zodiac signs, foot size and other details, but its fun for fans having some kind of info like birthdays, people like “celebrate” it and also finding out who were born in the same month/day with them. I dont think, it harms for creator to think this up.

One russian news group about ML asked Thomas even in french about all of it:

“Hello, @Thomas_Astruc. Its Russian fandom. Why you dont asnwer the questions from fans? Including those questions about characters’ age. Character and temper, for example, depend on age, as well as their actions. A whole plot depends on actions. Will we get a serious answer on it?”

“Yeah, you will: its “no”

Sooo, kids, thats how we justify our mistakes in the plot :)

Remember when they said we will get LGBT character(s)? Dont be confused if we wont get it as a result. Even creator forgets what he promises.

2. Secondly, maybe you saw one of the comics which went on sale, if im not mistaken (sorry if i am), in September about LB and CN’s adventures in New-York. Or you could see the best pages from it. I wont even show it. All quality of this comic is another topic to talk about.

Many people were confused and even mad by context.

There was naked Marinette in hella awkward and strange situation (also, I saw enough pages to notice, that she had some clothes on before transformation, but then, uh, she detransforms and she is totally naked?? Sorry, if you do something like that, do it with logic, at least).

Also, some rasist stuff.

Ofc Thomas got questions about it. His answer was that people had to read a full version of comic.

And well:

I read full version tho and its still a full crap :) Also, please, fire this damn artist or kick them to draw better.

3. This thing:

Only animation or only plot, guys, dont complain here.

Also, let me be a big ass, but I still havent seen any great story. But I saw some shitty animation already :) (to compare with first season)

4. The latest thing that happened not really long time ago:

Thats everything objective, of course. But still, all these responses and teases from Thomas are getting just annoying and even rude. Some time ago it could be funny and cool like “our Hawkdaddy is such a tease haha”.

Fan’s tweet after this convo. Make your own conclusions.

What is bad when bad characters/bullies are getting love and fans want them redemption arc when they have a right and chance for it? The most of characters here are damn kids, you know.

We dont know much about Lila and her role in future, but hasnt Chloe got enough screen time to be shown just like a too spoiled kid with childhood problems?

And, no, good look is not misleading. Not that I really love how Chloe looks lol, but it doesnt make me think about her worse. Lila is even prettier for me in some way, but for now I dont really like her. So good job here.

Also make people hate teenage character? Cool.If Chloe is a bitch, why she gets a miraculous? Additionally, Astruc said long time ago that akumatized in the past characters cant have a miraculous and be heroes. Alya, Nino and Chloe were akumatized, so..? I dont have any answers.

All of it is just my opinion, I know that people see those situations in different ways and have different points of views. I just think that people like Thomas Astruc should be more careful with their words and be more serious about their projects. Dont justify it like “its just a show for kids”.

Thats all. Thats what I think, anon, You definetely didnt expect so big answer lol, sorry.

Being covered by a big gaming news site was one of my fantasies, so I’m elated this happened. The article is here, for anyone curious!

Akarsha didn’t realize, but Noelle totally heard it. Noelle kind of had a sense of what was up already, but actually hearing it worried her. She was debating whether or not to intervene when Min showed up.

On a small note, Min trying to cheer Akarsha up slightly improved Noelle’s opinion of Min (even though Min and Akarsha almost end up fist fighting again afterward).

Min plays video games too, imagine them playing Team Fortress 2 and later Overwatch together... Diya, Min, and Noelle have all seen some basic anime like Pokemon, Digimon, and Yugioh, but Akarsha’s the only real hardcore anime fan. I’m glad she met “Sakura”, “Yuki”, and Ester through the baseball club, because now she has weeb friends to talk about that stuff too.

(Ester is less obvious about liking anime than “Sakura” and “Yuki”, but you can still tell by her outfit’s style. Lowkey but not lowkey enough)

I can totally relate to all of them, but I’d say Diya!

Yes, they grow close over the course of the year and Noelle has to try really hard not to cry LMAO They still keep in touch afterward.

Yep, they both feel this huge gulf between themselves and their parents due to cultural differences. Many Asian immigrant parents are extremely conservative so it feels like they’re on a completely different wavelength from you, and at the same time they have complete power over you. It’s kind of a bad feeling.

...Also, shadowing their faces saved me the work of drawing their different facial expressions.

Min was actually out of town when the fire happened, so Diya had to call her and tell her what happened :( Diya (and eventually Min) sleeps on Noelle’s couch for a bit. Noelle and Akarsha aren’t living together at the time and Noelle has the nicer/cleaner apartment

It sounds really miserable, but they’re ok in the end

Noelle's passion is math and science, so she definitely ends up doing something in STEM that she likes, just not what her parents were expecting. Akarsha is similar and becomes a software engineer -- They’re actually both naturally interested in those subjects, which says a lot about how bad the parental pressure really is.

I like to think Diya and Min actually manage to break into minor league baseball and eventually MLB

Most of my outfit inspiration comes from my tumblr/twitter feeds. I wish I could recommend you fashion blogs, but I’m not following any?! They’re all just fandom mutuals who randomly reblog cool clothes sometimes.

I used to have trouble deciding what clothes characters should wear, so every time I see an image of a cool outfit I save it for reference. After doing this since high school I now have...uh...

And those are just the unorganized ones, the ones i have in folders are like...

Now if I’m stumped for what a character should wear, I just browse these massive folders for inspiration. I can actually pinpoint the omocat jacket that gave me the idea for Min’s:

I thought, “it should be a warning: high voltage sign on the back!”, and then I just went on Google images and looked them up.

Diya and Akarsha are Indian, Min-seo is Korean, Noelle is Taiwanese, Chryssa is black, Liz is…mostly Irish, I think? “Sakura” is Pakistani, “Yuki” is Filipino. I’ve heard a lot of guesses for Ester, but she’s half black and half Chinese!

If you want to make a game like Butterfly Soup, try the program Renpy! It doesn’t require programming experience to use and there’s a lot of guides online on how to use it. My NUMBER ONE BIG ADVICE IS MAKE A REALLY, REALLY SMALL GAME FIRST. My first game, Pom Gets Wi-Fi, was only 30-45 minutes long. If you make it any bigger than that, you almost guaranteed will never finish it. The dream game that you want to make is probably longer than that, so don’t make your dream game first! That’s kind of why I was so alarmed when Pom Gets Wi-Fi took off -- I’m very proud of that game and still love it, but it was like my test for the games I dreamed of making like Butterfly Soup. (Also, 17 is a great age to start making games, good for you!) Other stuff I’ve learned: Programming: I mostly learned super specific things that can’t be easily applied to other situations. If you want to know how I did a specific thing in Renpy, message me!

Writing: If you’re struggling to write something, it might be for a good reason. Maybe the scene is unnecessary or boring, your mental image of the scene doesn’t translate well to the format of your work, or the character motivations aren’t convincing enough. Deleting a scene altogether isn’t defeat, sometimes it’s the best path forward! Give up more!

Artwise: Drawing for non-pixel art games takes FOREVER. The sheer amount of time it’d take to draw all the characters and backgrounds was so demoralizing that I found myself procrastinating because I didn’t want to tackle it. Not only did I have a large cast of characters (9 in the baseball club alone), but because of flashbacks, I had to draw half of them again as kids!

To anyone thinking about making a game by themselves, SERIOUSLY consider making it a pixel art game. If you’re that set on making a non-pixel art game, SEVERELY limit the number of characters and backgrounds you have to draw!! I’m begging u...learn from my mistakes...

I loved USC! The Interactive Media major was cool and fun -- I met a lot of good friends through the program! It was probably the best few years of my life.

Unfortunately...I felt like it did nothing to prepare me for finding a job. There are very few classes for aspiring game artists and game writers. There wasn’t a single professor who worked as an artist at a triple A studio while I was there, and only one who was a major writer. I get that you gotta be self motivated, but I wish I had someone in the faculty I felt comfortable discussing my career path with. Some of the professors had clear favorite students and if you weren’t one of them, they’d make very little effort to reach out to you or interact with you. I know I'm introverted, but I never got this feeling with my general elective classes -- I had plenty of chances to talk to my writing professor, architecture lab professor, art teacher, etc., yet I came out of a lot of my Interactive Media classes wondering if my professors even remembered me.

If you want to be a game designer or maybe a writer, and are really focused/outgoing with your professors, it could be the major for you, but if you want to be a game artist I’m not sure it’s the best place to be.

I was super nervous right after it came out because I was worried people wouldn’t like it! I put a lot into it, and actually teared up writing parts of it, so it was a ridiculous relief to see that people were touched by it. I’m really happy now and really want to make a sequel. Also, I’m beyond grateful to my friends/mutuals/fans spreading the word and tweeting/posting about the game and making fancontent ;~; I really owe everything to them! A few people wondered about how I was holding up attention-wise, and actually...as a fanartist I sort of thrive on this, haha. Also, this is much less intense than when I released Pom Gets Wi-Fi. For perspective, it took Butterfly Soup a week to reach the number of downloads Pom got in one day.

Vicki Gunvalson and more stars from The Real Housewives of Orange County have expressed sympathy for Meghan King Edmonds in the wake of her husband Jim Edmonds‘ alleged cheating scandal.

“@MeghanKEdmonds I’m so sorry. You are right, YOU did not deserve this,” Gunvalson, 57, tweeted on Saturday.

The women had famously feuded on the show with Meghan, 34, previously telling PEOPLE after season 10, “I have never been friends with Vicki and after last season I can promise I will never be friends with her.”

Gunvalson also once told Meghan that she didn’t believe her marriage to Jim, 48, would last.

Meghan joked about the diss in 2017, writing on Twitter, “The three years Vicki gave my marriage is almost up! Uh oh!”

Gunvalson clarified her sentiments, responding, “I think I actually gave it 5, and then retracted because it appears you and Jimmy are very happy!”

Tamra Judge also sent well wishes to Meghan after she shared an Instagram post, which read, “Healing takes time.”

In addition, former RHOC star Lizzie Rovsek commented on the post.

“Thinking of you Meg. Love you,” Rovsek, 39, wrote adding five black heart emojis.

Gretchen Rossi, who is expecting her first child with partner Slade Smiley, commented, “I’m so sorry you are going through this. Sending you all healing prayers.”

Brandi Glanville, who was a cast member of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, also weighed in on Jim’s alleged affair, writing, “I’m so sorry @MeghanKEdmonds just read your blog & I get it more than anyone.”

In 2010, Glanville, 46, split from husband Eddie Cibrian after nine years of marriage. The former couple share two sons — Jake Austin, 12, and Mason Edward, 16. Cibrian, 46, is now married to singer LeAnn Rimes.

On Friday, Meghan broke her silence regarding her husband’s cheating scandal with a lengthy statement on her blog. The day prior to her statement, Jim denied the allegations that he cheated on her with an alleged mistress, but admitted that he “engaged in an inappropriate conversation with this person,” as he told Us Weekly.

In her blog post, titled “I’m Sad,” Meghan admitted that she found about the allegations when AllAboutTheTea shared them publicly and revealed that she called her husband and he reiterated that no physical relationship was had with his alleged mistress, but that he did exchange “lewd photos” with her for several months.

Meghan debunked the claims made by the outlet that she left a voicemail for the mistress, but did reveal that her former MLB husband paid the mistress off to keep it from his wife.

“Do I believe him? I don’t know,” Meghan wrote in her blog post. “Because I don’t trust him anymore. Physical or not, he still had an affair and he admits this to me.”

AllAboutTheTea’s source that accused Jim of infidelity also provided screenshots of alleged text messages between him and the woman, which allegedly included pictures of his genitalia and a video of the former pro-baseball player masturbating on the same day Meghan gave birth to their twins Hart and Hayes, 1.

“I don’t care about my stupid massive house, I don’t care about my new car, I don’t care about my diamonds. What does any of that mean when I can’t have the most basic needs met? It means nothing. Smoke and mirrors,” Meghan continued.

The mom of three added that her “face stings” from sobbing since discovering the news of her husband’s alleged infidelity and revealed that the couple is also dealing with a health issue with their son Hart.

Bowden: Phillies in Front for Harper, Deal “Probably” Done This Week

I’m truly sorry I couldn’t be there for you yesterday throughout Jon Heyman’s Harper/Phillies attention-grabbing tweets, the subsequent hedging, and eventual walk-back:

One interesting dynamic to the Harper/Machado market: 3 prime teams have shown interest in both stars — the Phillies, Padres and White Sox. Phillies have been confident they’ll land 1 of the stars, but at least 1 of these teams will be shut out.

That’s not news, it’s, uh, it’s math, man.

But good news. New day, new speculation.

This time it’s former MLB general manager Jim Bowden checking in on CBS Sports Network with an update on the Harper situation, if you want to call it that:

"The process is coming near an end."

The key points:

Harper is going to get 10 years.

The deal is going to beat the annual average value of Giancarlo Stanton’s 13-year/$325 million deal. That’s $25 million per year for you math whizzes.

Harper wants to win, it’s a priority, and he thinks the Phillies are close.

Bowden is sure that Harper can see himself hitting in the lineup between Rhys Hoskins and J.T. Realmuto.

He still believes Harper will end up in Philadelphia, but did note that “anything can happen,” just in case anybody out there wasn’t aware of that possibility.

Finally, Bowden hears that Harper will probably be signed by the end of the week.

There you go. That’s the latest. Harper and the Phils by no later than Friday. Done deal. Unless it’s not. You know the drill.

Rays high pitching prospect Brent Honeywell suffers an arm damage in spring coaching

The whirlwind spring coaching for the Tampa Bay Rays took one other activate Thursday, with high pitching prospect Brent Honeywell apparently injuring his throwing arm. The eyewitness account:

Rays supervisor Kevin Money advised reporters that Honeywell has a forearm pressure and will likely be additional evaluated.

Uh oh.

As we die-hard baseball followers know, “forearm pressure” is usually the preliminary reported subject when a participant has torn his UCL, which results in Tommy John surgical procedure. It is essential to notice that this does not imply it is the case each single time. Honeywell may positively simply have a light muscle pressure and absolutely get well earlier than the season begins. It is simply scary to see these phrases at the moment.

Honeywell, 22, was 13-9 with a Three.49 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 172 strikeouts in 136 2/Three innings final season between Double-A (two begins) and Triple-A (24 begins). The expectation is that he’d begin the season in Triple-A this time round however ultimately make his journey to the big-league membership. Most main shops have Honeywell as a top-15 prospect in baseball getting into the season and the Rays’ high pitching prospect.

Earlier this spring, Honeywell traded barbs with established Rays workers ace Chris Archer.

Within the following days, the Rays traded Jake Odorizzi and Steven Souza whereas designating Corey Dickerson for project. After the Souza commerce, Honeywell not-so-cryptically tweeted this:

So, sure, it has been fairly the spring in Rays camp and it is simply over per week outdated.

Hopefully Honeywell is not critically injured. He is an unimaginable expertise and seeing younger gamers go down is at all times dangerous for enterprise.

The arbitration deadline passed, which means something actually happened

Saturday’s Say Hey, Baseball looks at the exciting world of last-minute arbitration deals, something called Project Sunshine, and the perfection of Yu Darvish’s tweets.

This is where we are, friends. The baseball news cupboard is so bare that fans have actually been yearning for the arbitration deadline, which was Friday at 1pm ET. Because at the very least, that meant that things would happen with players and contracts.

And boy, did things, uh, happen. A glut of players reached one-year deals with their teams today, but a few stuck out. Josh Donaldson avoided arbitration with the Blue Jays, with his deal setting an arbitration record. He’ll be paid $23 million this year, beating out Bryce Harper’s $21.625 million. And Kris Bryant also avoided arbitration with the Cubs, getting a record $10.85 million for a player in his first year of arbitration. That record had previously been $10 million and held by Ryan Howard, whose list of accomplisments after his first few years in the majors looks familiar: a rookie of the year award, and an NL MVP award.

Not all players reached deals with their teams before the deadline. At least 26 players are headed to salary arbitration with their team. The two teams with the most players? The Marlins and the Astros with three each. And in reality, it’s not surprising that either of these teams are at the top of this list. The Marlins want nothing more than to clear salary so Derek Jeter and the rest of the new ownership group can make piles and piles of money. And the Astros? The entire point of their rebuild was to build a championship team while spending as little money as possible. Now a panel will decide how much they should pay George Springer, Ken Giles, and Collin McHugh.

Or... something. This is the most MLB news there has been in awhile, and somehow it’s still terribly boring. We’re talking about salary arbitration like it’s the most exciting thing to happen in baseball this year. AND THAT’S BECAUSE IT IS.

It’s been plugged once already, but I’m doing it again because everyone should read Marc Normandin’s excellent piece on how collusion in baseball affects, well, everything.

The Royals have hired Gene Lamont in their front office, which is going to make Paul Rudd and Rob Riggle really mad.

With Jay Bruce back on the roster, the Mets are now interested in signing Lucas Duda, so they’re obviously trying to get the old band back together

Fish Stripes has the story on Project Sunshine, a new initiative to take down the Derek Jeter-led Marlins ownership group.

The Yankees are still working to somehow make their team better (????), but trading David Robertson to clear up payroll would only make the team worse.

With the Eagles and Falcons facing off in the NFL playoffs this weekend, the Phillies and Braves have made a tasty football wager involving classic foods from each city.

Yu Darvish has been tweeting, which perhaps the best thing to happen this entire offseason. This time he refutes the latest rumor that the Yankees made him an offer, but it’s not clear if the numbers in the rumor were wrong, or if Yu just didn’t like the numbers they offered him.

Carlos Rodón got called for a drug test while hunting, and then things got weird

For baseball players, drug tests are just part of life. If the drug test guy calls, you have to go. When Eric Thames had his blistering start to the 2017 season, he had a drug tester at his locker frequently. But in the offseason, it’s not always that convenient. A player could be out at dinner with his family, or driving to the store, or as Chicago White Sox pitcher Carlos Rodón tweeted, hunting.

So I'm in Kansas hunting. I get a call for ANOTHER drug test. I tell him to meet me at Subway(No one can know my honey hole)… he said he felt uncomfortable doing it there because of people. Bro, I have to pee infront of you what do you mean YOUUU feel uncomfortable.

Hunting isn’t the weird part of this tweet. A lot of MLB players hunt, and it’s not that uncommon. And you can’t blame Rodón for not wanting to give up his hunting spot, which is why he picked a Subway for the, uh, collection. But the drug test guy was uncomfortable with the sandwich shop because of all the people, presumably because he has to actually watch Rodon urinate to verify that the sample is authentic.

Of course, Rodón thought that was insane. They’d presumably be doing the collection part inside of a bathroom stall and not in front of everyone in the men’s bathroom of this Kansas Subway. Have a heart, drug test guy! If a baseball player has to evacuate his bladder right in front of you, the least you can do is be comfortable doing it in the location of his choosing.

Next time, Rodón should just find a new spot in the woods and make the drug test guy go there. At least then there’d be no one around but the animals and birds.

Treading Water—Sunday Chats (6/18/17)

It’s weird to see TWO chats posts in a week, but hopefully I’ll keep this brief. It’s been a bad, long day, but the chatting stopes for nothing.

Kinda Funny Live 3

The KFLs have seriously been the highlight of my year for quite a while now. Ever since the first one, which only came together as a last minute thing when I missed the PAX East of 2015, I have known I can’t miss one. The first marks the relationships I built with folks who have gone on to be my real best friends. The second as a high point and a reminder that we’re all working. Now the third has been a look at some of those friends who have gone on to “Make it”, as well as a shift to such intimacy in regards to being fans of Kinda Funny.

We all loved a thing that brought us together, but now I think our love for each other, the friendships there, have spawned off to be their own independent strength. Barrett alone, who I stayed with while I was in SF, him and Alyssa have become really deep, personal friends to me. Anytime I get to spend with them is like time with family, and it’s incredibly important to me. I cannot express how lucky I am to have them, as well as Roger Pokorny and Danny Juarez, the two other folks staying with me. They acted as my rock and center in a week that has gone on to have a lot of fallout with my emotional state, like I talked about in Tuesday Chats. All of them there, happily supporting me, even when I am a mess and feel as though I’m not worth supporting, made that weekend for me.

I didn’t get to hug and meet and talk to as many people as I would have liked. But that week I really needed the family that I have out west. And I got it. And I’m just so happy for that.

Talking about KFL is such a blur. I haven’t gotten the chance to really sit and think about it, thus the lack of written recap for it. But everyone there encourages and most of all challenges each other. To do things, to be creative, to engage, to work together, and most of all, to support one another. For a community filled with folks trying to either actually get hired at Kinda Funny proper or to get into games or entertainment coverage, there is a ton of “send me your stuff and I’ll check it out” and it just warms me. I’m the same way. I’m always down to see and consume new stuff. Any because of the KFLs I have gotten the chance to have so many amazing people on Irrational Passions Podcast.

I am infinitely lucky. And even though everyday I definitely feel undeserving of the adoration and affection folks give me, I can always just flash back to the weekend of KFL3 now. Where, in the movie theatre after seeing Wonder Woman, Sean Pitts called my name, and me turning, swinging my big gorilla arms, knocked a glass over an broke it. This led Roger Pokorny to start a round of applause from the crowd of KFL-goers. So. If I ever need to humble myself real quick I got that.

What I’ve Been Working On

I wrote a big long editorial on E3 that I think I am gonna try and publish either tonight or tomorrow. But I’ve been writing weird stuff. This past week has been dominated by thoughts and feelings on the E3 shows. And it’s been weird to write about what I love so much while feeling all messed up in the head. I can feel how it changes my tone, but I think it brings something different out of me.

Outside of the sphere of writing, I’ve been making and uploading all of the ExtraLife 2016 videos! I’ve made it happen y’all! The last one finished uploading this morning, and while I had hoped it was done last night, for now I can say 100% for sure, it is done. The Deed is done. ExtraLife is finally behind me...

And also ahead of me. Oh boy. We have some surprises for the upcoming ExtraLife 2017 that I am so excited to announce. Trying to find the right time and place for them, but people should be excited. We are going to be putting on one hell of a show.

Alundra

The big one I’ve been playing and the one I’ll probably go back to playing tonight is Alundra.

For folks who don’t know, and it’s probably a ton of you, Alundra is a PS1 game that is a Zelda-like, and it’s one of the best I’ve ever played. Right up there with Okami as far as NOT Zelda games that are maybe even better than some Zelda games.

All you need to do to want to play Alundra is watch its INCREDIBLE intro.

The Evil Within

I just bought this last night on the podcast when I found out it was on sale.

It ends up my old save from October 2014 was still on my PlayStation. I had gotten to chapter 4 apparently, but I started over.

Man that part with the butcher at the beginning is totally not fun at all.

I remember the first time I went through it I knew exactly what to do, and this time, I DID NOT. AND OOOOOH BOY. I WAS MAD.

I died about 12 times before getting through, so let’s hope it picks up the pace pretty soon.

It’s a little bit exhausting, to be honest. I don’t like to admit it, but Sunday Chats is probably the most exhausting things I write outside of Alex Talks scripts. I don’t say that to make it sound like a burden, I love it! But I do put a ton of love and care into it. I’d do one of these every day if I could, they’re so limitless rewarding. Seeing people come out to interact with me it just... Well, it’s a really special feeling that I cherish a great deal. And they help make my favorite day, my favorite day still.

As for PSX. I just don’t think it’s in the cards. I’m more focused on making ExtraLife an event to remember for the folks coming to my house for that.

Hrm... This is really tough. I think I have some things that I don’t necessarily have no one to talk to about, but we’re just in different headspaces about. Like Harry Potter. I didn’t have anyone to chat about that with for the longest time, because it’s so deep and emotional for me. I did have a pretty good conversation about it that was pretty contrary to me recently though, so it can happen. I just have to be in the right headspace. And also I have my friends Barrett and Ally to talk real-ass Harry Potter stuff about now, and I think they’re both in a very similar place to me with it.

Music is another one, because the way I consume and appreciate it is super weird and unorthodox, and I don’t know anyone else who listens to music like me. I usually take an album and eat away at it over a month or two. Sometimes even a year. And just continue listening to it over and over again. It’s just my process I think.

So I don’t think there are necessarily things I am crazy passionate about that I have no one to talk to about, but no one really interprets certain things the way I do.

Well, Google is defining esoteric as “intended for or likely to be understood by only a small number of people with a specialized knowledge or interest.” I think when I say my writing is esoteric, I don’t necessarily lean into the idea that it’s specialized, but more abstract. Intended for my audience. I make things overtly flowery, too long, and redundant usually. So that’s what I meant.

Fuck this question.

Also it’s Nathan Fillion as Richard Castle.

This is so hard for me. I love the Shatter soundtrack, for example, but I’ve played all of 25 minutes of that game.

It’s somewhere between the Persona 3/Persona 4/Persona 5 domain. I love the hiphop inspirations in Persona 3. Oh boy do I. Persona 4 has the jolly pop-y vibes down to a science. And then Persona 5 does jazz, and holy shit do I love me some jazz. Even if I never listen to jazz music in my spare time (I should) the sound of it awakens something in me.

Right now it’s probably Persona 5, which I do think has maybe the strongest soundtrack of the three, but that’s just where I’m at right now. That’ll probably change, so take it with a grain of salt.

Hrm, well if this includes games that were just announced, Ori and the Will of the Wisps and that Shadow of the Colossus Remake are right up there. If we’re leaving just games that actually got shown and with gameplay, its Tacoma and Mario Odyssey. Holy shit does that new Mario game look in-credible.

No and Jesus Logan... Between this and that tweet you sent out with you using a fidget spinner, I don’t know what to tell you.

I’ve said before on Sunday Chats that me and my dad aren’t crazy close, so I don’t have a lot. But here are a few.

One time my dad, his friend Roy, and myself, we all drove to New York to see Bruce Springsteen. It was in the backseat of this big van we got to drive to and from Florida, and it had a TV in it. I hooked up my N64 and played Super Smash Bros with my dad in the back seat for an hour. It was a ton of fun.

One time when I was younger and I couldn’t sleep, I came downstairs to see my dad awake playing MLB for the PS2. We talked a bit and then I played a game against him. He absolutely destroyed me. Like, not even close. We had a good laugh about it though.

Me and my dad went jet skiing outside the house he used to live in on the water once. It was pretty cool. We went out to the Chesapeake bay and everything.

I used to watch my dad play the OG Super Mario Bros and Legend of Zelda as a kid. Some of my very first memories of video games ever.

Why are you so wrong Jon? Well, I don’t know. I can’t help you with that.

What I can tell you is that, while not the greatest Mexican food in the world, not even necessarily Mexican food, Chipotle is definitely better than California Tortilla. And Qdoba and their wet tortillas. But that’s an aside.

I don’t know! I haven’t seen it yet! It sounds like they just adjusted it so that an actual fight happens at the end, not just a cut to black. It’s probably for the best, since it really was super anticlimactic before.

YO IT’S SO GOOD!!

Tacoma is out so soon and I barely have any room in July to breath. Luckily the only big release there is Splatoon 2, which isn’t a massive investment of time for me. But holy shit dude. Video games are so good. Like, I wasn’t even mad at Sony’s seen-it-all-before-except-sotc-remake-holyshit because video games this year are just so damn good.

I am shooting for at least ONE. If it doesn’t happen Joey, I can safely say you’ve let me down.

But no, it’ll happen. It was such a nice time to actually get to talk to you in person again at KFL. I miss you!

It’s probably either Ochako because she made me cry so so hard, or Kirishima because I just like him a whole lot. Iida is also up there, because he is just the best and I just want to hug him and make him less high strung all the time.

Luckily I will never be as good as Griffin McElroy, but if you wanna be my Australian Nick Robinson you know I am so down for this.

Checklist

I know I said I’d try to make up for my lack of a Checklist last Chats on Tuesday, but I didn’t really watch as much E3 content as I wanted to. I’ll share what I can though

The #1: Easy Allies E3 Reactions

While I haven’t listened to their Frame Trap or Easy Allies Podcast on E3 yet, their nightly reactions have been stellar. The only real E3 reactions I’ve gotten to so far. Though I’m really looking forward to getting into Kinda Funny and Giantbomb’s reactions.

Even if I haven’t watched them yet, my day of is tomorrow and I can’t want to snuggle up under a blanket and crack into these. They are industry-spanning, insightful, hilarious, and honest-to-god historic. In the absence of Ryan Davis at Giantbomb, the finales of having Dave Lange, Adam Boyes, John Vignocchi and Jeff Gerstmann together, as the panel, really bring me that sense of family that I miss from GB’s Ryan-less content. Not to say their content isn’t amazing, but those four are truly family, and their closer to the yearly GiantBomb E3 streams is always a sight to behold.
