Daniel Padilla is a Filipino recording artist and a famous actor, also known as the “Teen King,” a tag that is the result of his massive popularity with Filipino teenager. Daniel Padilla was born Daniel John Ford Padilla, on April 26, 1995, in Manila, Philippines, to Rommel Padilla and Karla Estrada. His parents were full-time entertainment industry professionals. His uncles were well-known actors too. Thus, having been born into a family that was deeply rooted in the entertainment industry, Daniel was fascinated by show business from a very young age.

However, his family life was not as ideal as it seemed from a distance. His parents divorced when he was a kid. His mother raised him all by herself, and his father married another woman. Daniel has seven half-siblings from his father’s side and three half-siblings from his mother’s side. What We Know as ASAP Rocky’s Trial Begins

As the rapper ASAP Rocky’s trial on an assault charge started on Tuesday in Stockholm, the case has already billowed into a scandal of international proportions: Accusations of racism and human rights abuses have been leveled against Sweden’s justice system, and President Trump has taken to Twitter to criticize Sweden’s prime minister.

It has been nearly a month since he was accused of assaulting a man on June 30 while on tour in the Swedish capital. If he is found guilty, his punishment could include a fine or prison.

Last Thursday, Rocky pleaded not guilty. He acted in self-defense, his lawyer said.

Who is ASAP Rocky?

ASAP Rocky, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, is a New York rapper, actor and fashion model who ascended from YouTube and Tumblr in the early 2010s as the face of the Harlem-based creative collective known as the ASAP Mob.

He has released three full-length albums via RCA Records since 2013, including “Testing,” which featured Frank Ocean and FKA Twigs and debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard chart last year. Rocky has also collaborated with Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Lana del Rey and Tyler, the Creator, and is known for singles like “Peso” and “Problems.”

Beyond music, the rapper has worked with the designers Raf Simons and Calvin Klein, released clothing for Guess and participated in a performance installation called “Lab Rat” at Sotheby’s.

What happened in Sweden?

Rocky and two others were detained on July 5 and accused of assaulting a man, Mustafa Jafari. Rocky is claiming self-defense. In two videos on his Instagram account, he and members of his entourage repeatedly tell two men — one of whom later appears to throw his headphones at Rocky’s bodyguard — to stop following them.

“We don’t want to fight y’all,” Rocky says to one. “We’re not trying to go to jail.”

President Trump referred to the videos in a tweet on July 25 targeting the Swedish prime minister, Stefan Lofven.

But in other videos filmed by bystanders, Rocky appears to throw one of the men to the ground. The clips also seem to show Rocky and two of the men in his group standing over the man on the ground, kicking and punching him. In police interviews, Rocky said he struck Mr. Jafari because he feared he and his entourage were about to be attacked.

What happened to Rocky afterward?

Since his arrest, the rapper has missed performances in London, Moscow, Barcelona, Milan and elsewhere.

A Change.org petition supporting Rocky’s release says he is being held under “horrific” and “inhumane” conditions, including restricted access to food and “24/7 solitary confinement.”

Karin Olofsdotter, Sweden’s ambassador to the United States, disputed this in a phone interview with The New York Times on July 18, saying that Rocky was permitted to see other inmates for up to three hours each day, and that having his own space was “a good thing” rather having to share a cell.

There were “misunderstandings,” she said, adding that Sweden has a “fair and just legal system.” Foreigners accused of crimes are normally kept in detention as investigations take place, she said, because of the flight risk. Sweden does not have a system of bail.

Rocky’s lawyer at that time, Henrik Olsson Lilja said in an interview with Dagens Nyheter, a Swedish daily, that the rapper was being treated fairly. (Rocky replaced his legal team two days later.)

How are people reacting?

At the urging of celebrities, including Kanye West, President Trump spoke with Mr. Lofven by phone about the case on July 20. The Swedish government said that Mr. Lofven had told the president that Rocky would not receive special treatment.

Mr. Lofven’s press secretary said that the call, which lasted 20 minutes, was “friendly and respectful.” That cordial tone, at least on President Trump’s end, seemed to take a turn several days later, with the president saying that “Sweden should focus on its real crime problem!”

Carl Bildt, Sweden’s former prime minister, wrote in The Washington Post that the kind of executive intervention the president seemed to be looking for would not be possible with the limitations of the office.

“A Swedish prime minister who tries to order a court to release a suspect or dismiss a case is first going to fail and then, with high probability, will be kicked out of office,” Mr. Bildt wrote.

“The independence of the judiciary is rightly seen as a hallmark of a truly free society,” he added. “In this we are no different from the United States.”

Beyond the president and Mr. West, other celebrities and politicians have been outspoken about Rocky’s arrest. Several members of Congress affirmed their support of Rocky’s release from jail in a news conference on July 17 that included Representatives Adriano Espaillat and Hakeem Jeffries of New York; Representative André Carson of Indiana; and Representative Joaquin Castro of Texas.

What comes next?

Rocky remains in custody in Sweden as the trial occurs. The hearing is scheduled to last three days — Tuesday, Thursday and Friday — and a decision is expected soon afterward.

Before the trial, a spokeswoman for the Swedish Prosecution Authority said that, if convicted, Rocky could be fined based on his daily earnings and could face a maximum of two years in prison.

Leif Silbersky, a Swedish legal expert, told the newspaper Svenska Dagbladet last week that any punishment handed down by the court would depend on whether a broken bottle found at the scene was used in the attack. If it was, Rocky could serve jail time, he said.

Rocky’s current lawyer, Slobodan Jovicic, told The Times on Thursday that he had “good hope that we will get a result, and get him home soon.”

Can Christian Pulisic Possibly Live Up To The Hype?

Christian Pulisic made U.S. soccer history last week when he reached an agreement to join Chelsea in the coming summer transfer window. Borussia Dortmund, where Pulisic has played since 2015, will pocket $73 million for the rights to him — by far the largest fee ever for an American. But this transfer raises a number of questions: Is Pulisic worth the money? What can Chelsea expect from a young player out of the Bundesliga, and how well does the American fit his new club’s needs? How will Pulisic slot into manager Maurizio Sarri’s system, and what can fans expect to see from him in the coming years?

The first question is how to adjust for a transfer from the Bundesliga, the top tier of German soccer. Do we expect Pulisic’s production to drop off significantly from Germany to England? Given the players who have moved between the two leagues before, the answer is no.

Since 2010-11, 103 midfielders or attackers have transferred between the Bundesliga and the Premier League. Normalized for minutes, these players created about 371 expected goals and assists in the Bundesliga and 364 in the Premier League, based on data from analytics firm Opta Sports. That’s a difference of about 2 percent.

While there is variation, on average a player who creates attacking chances in the Bundesliga can be counted on to do the same in the Premier League.

With more than 6,000 minutes played before his 21st birthday, Pulisic is in rarefied air already. Since the 2010-11 season, only 47 players have more than 6,000 minutes played among one of the top five European leagues1 and the Champions League.

And even among that group, Pulisic’s production stands out. Here are players since 2010 with at least 2,500 minutes played before their age-21 season, sorted by expected goals and expected assists per 90 minutes, with strikers excluded.

Not every young star hits: Lucas Ocampos remains a capable but unspectacular Ligue 1 attacker for Marseille, Erik Lamela has struggled at Tottenham and faced major injury problems, and Xherdan Shaqiri stagnated for years before becoming a key cog in Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool squad this season. But on average, results are strong. In up to three seasons after their age-20 seasons, these players averaged 0.54 nonpenalty goals and assists per 90 minutes. That’s an improvement for their expected goals and assists numbers — players who are this good at 20 tend to get even better in their early 20s.

And as befitting that production, players like this tend to find their way to big clubs. Excluding the players currently in their age-20 seasons, 18 of 27 are regulars at teams in the Soccer Power Index top 20. Further, when players this young and this productive make their moves to big clubs, it’s expensive. Ousmane Dembele, Pulisic’s teammate at the time at Dortmund, cost Barcelona well over $100 million. Pulisic’s teammate-to-be Eden Hazard cost Chelsea only about $40 million in a less inflated market after his age-21 season. A few others came more cheaply — Inter Milan selling Philippe Coutinho for less than $15 million after the numbers he put up as a 20-year-old looks like a historically poor decision, while the less impressive futures of Ocampos and Domenico Berardi suggest the roughly $10 million fees paid for their services were more in line with their values. On average, the players on this chart who transferred within two years of their age-20 season cost about $44 million.

Pulisic’s future looks bright, and Chelsea’s fee is not out of line with what players of his pedigree tend to command. But one concern that arises here is that Pulisic’s best production came in his age-17 to -19 seasons. Now at 20, when he should be coming into his own, his production has declined from his usual 0.4 to 0.5 expected goals and assists per 90 minutes to less than 0.3. He has even lost starting minutes in the Bundesliga to Jadon Sancho.

The decline represents fewer than 1,000 minutes, and Pulisic’s total production including these minutes remains strong. But the drop is still concerning. The problem appears to be Pulisic’s role in the system of new Dortmund manager Lucien Favre. Favre prefers a more defensive and counterattacking system than the high-pressing, high-possession style of Thomas Tuchel, under whom Pulisic broke in. This year, Pulisic is playing much deeper on the pitch than he ever used to. Only about 8 percent of his open-play pass receptions have been in the penalty area or on the flanks near the penalty area, compared with about 13 percent in previous seasons with Dortmund. Instead, Pulisic has done much more buildup work, with 13 percent of his passes received in the central area of the defensive half, compared with 6 percent previously.

Pulisic is currently expected to contribute to a slower buildup style or help run counterattacks through the center, rather than making himself available as a passing outlet near the goal or near the endline. But it’s that latter skill where he has stood out.

Pulisic has averaged just fewer than 1.5 open-play passes received into the penalty area in his career so far. The most comparable players at such a young age are strikers — a few being among the best forwards in the world.

While other Americans have found steady work in the English Premier League — Tim Howard, Clint Dempsey, Brian McBride — none has commanded even close to the money that Pulisic has. All eyes will be him from day one. At 33, Llorente is the kind of name Woodward, the Glazers and, frankly, United supporters would turn their noses up at. Although he fits Mourinho’s forward profile, United discovered the pitfalls of having two battering rams against Burnley on Boxing Day, which marked the end of Ibrahimovic’s sorry second season.

Krzysztof Piatek (Genoa, contract expires: 2022)

Mason Greenwood

The 17-year-old has appeared 25 times for United Under-18s and scored 27. He has three in three in the Uefa Youth League and one in one for the U23s. United have arguably not had a more prolific goalscorer in their junior teams this century and Greenwood rubbed shoulders with the first-team aged 16 on the pre-season tour of the United States.

Mourinho has already promoted the Bradford-born goalscorer into first-team training this term and it would not be a surprise if he became the United manager’s seventh academy debutant before the end of the season.

United have witnessed through Marcus Rashford the benefit of promoting a youngster mid-season but such stratospheric starts are rare. Bedding Greenwood in would be essential but he already has an impressive presence about him and is not as callow as Rashford was at the same age. Another reserve outing on Friday night is likely.

There is nowhere easy to start when discussing My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Kanye West’s magnum opus addresses such a wide variety of themes in such quick succession, that to determine and succinctly state the essence of the work is nigh impossible. What can be said is that the album was a picture-perfect end to an overpowering decade, an album from the man who changed rap history, that changed music history. The 2000s were the decade of “bling rap.” Rap was about cars, girls, watches. Extravagant music videos were the norm. Rap was rich. The 2000s were the years of 50 Cent, Jay-Z, Puff Daddy, Lil Wayne, Flo Rida, and of course, the Louis Vuitton Don: Kanye West. Although no stranger to bling rap, Kanye was something special. His debut album, The College Dropout, debuted at number two on the Billboard charts, and reached platinum in two months. Late Registration, his follow up, debuted at number one, and doubled The College Dropout’s first-week sales. It was clear that Kanye ruled the rap scene, and, with his help, the industry peaked commercially higher and higher each year. Yet, stylistically, it was slowly stagnating. Bling had plateaued, and it was starting to get repetitive. If rap was to be the modern art form for the masses, it needed to evolve. Hip-hop was losing innovation and consciousness, and, soon enough, Kanye realized this. He tested the waters with a radical third album, Graduation, which he dangerously released the same week as bling king 50 Cent’s album Curtis. The tension was massive.

Shockingly, Graduation debuted at number one, with the highest first-week sales of any 2007 album. And, most importantly, it beat Curtis by more than 30%. With that, Kanye had symbolically ended bling rap. He now found that he could permanently change the rap scene. He ushered in a new wave of synthy, electro-pop rap that would dominate the charts for years to come. At the same time, he injected extra consciousness and content into his verses, raising the bar for lyricism. In only three albums and four years, it appeared he gained the power to change an entire industry. What could he do next?

The answer was found in unspeakable heartbreak. After the death of his mother and a very public breakup with fiancé Alexis Phifer, he was grief stricken. Impossibly, he channeled that grief into an album that would change the game even further: 808s and Heartbreak. Of course, it debuted at number one and quickly reached platinum, even with a radically new sound. The king of rap became the freshly crowned king of singing emotions through an auto tune filter, and, along with T-Pain, Kanye made auto tune the sound of radio in 2009.

It was clear that by now, Kanye had proved himself to be the best at whatever he put his mind to. Producing, rapping, singing, changing industries, making shoes with Louis-Vuitton - he was the scene. He was a household name, with publicity stunts and antics drawing him headlines from both TMZ and CNN. He was the man who went off-script, saying “George Bush doesn’t care about black people,” on national television. He posed in photos that portrayed him as the second coming of Christ. He crashed multiple award shows, making his grievances with the pop scene well-known. Despite all these controversies, his fame seemed unstoppable, and that resulted in an ego that grew at the same rate as his talent. Soon enough it caught up with him.

It didn’t take long before he disappeared.

He was spotted in Milan and in Paris, but no one knew what for. People said he quit music. People said he was going into fashion, exclusively. People said he would retire from the public eye permanently. For months, the man who wasn’t out of the headlines for a single day of the 2000s was absent without leave. Soon more rumors came. Rumors that he was in Hawaii, and had been for months. Rumors that he had rented an entire beachfront studio, and was shipping in talent including but not nearly limited to Nicki Minaj, Bon Iver, and Elton John. No one knew exactly what he was getting up to. The studio was famously secretive. One of the few photos leaked from the site was a sign that amusingly read: “no pictures.”  Without a doubt, Kanye West was working on new music, the one thing he was greatest at. Rejected by the world, the only way he could make it back was by giving the people music so good they could not ignore it. His achievements were forgotten when he took the stage from Taylor, and he needed to remind the world what he was about. So, after months of seclusion in his Hawaii studio, Kanye suddenly reemerged. 

He was on the media circuit, holding something up his sleeve. He did interviews, he did shows. He released singles. Tracklists leaked. Songs leaked. Good songs, with features that were at the very top of their game, too. Kanye West was back in the spotlight. From March of 2010 to November, he teased the world as they anxiously awaited what was coming. And, finally, on the 22nd of November, he gave the world his greatest. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Kanye West’s deepest, darkest, and most personal, distilled into 68 minutes, 13 tracks. The world’s first question was if the album would include a long-awaited apology to Taylor Swift, or any sort of repentance for his sins against pop. How else would he gain back the public’s love? But in true, peak Kanye fashion, there was no apology. There was no need for remorse. To get back on top, instead of an apology, he gave the world 13 songs that changed music history, by displaying near perfection across the board in writing, rapping, mixing, artistry, poetry, and, most importantly, honesty. Kanye West, with one album, was back on top, the king rethroned. And he knew that would happen before he released it. How did he open this magnum opus? “I fantasized ‘bout this back in Chicago”.
