"Write me some fluff?" you ask. I respond with a zombie apocalypse AU, as is only appropriate.

Jesper was only feet from the deer, stone-still and barely breathing in the twilight, and he nearly dropped his bow when the signal horn rang across the valley. He wasted precious seconds grabbing for it, and more glancing to the watchtower, where the red flag soared up the pole and the tiny figure of Ulf bent to the horn again, but Stefan was already grabbing his hand, sprinting back towards the nearest bunker. They'd been out a fair way, probably too far with night closing in, and the snarls and shuffling footsteps of the dead were already at their heels. Jesper shifted the arrow to his right hand as he ran, clutched like a dagger. Stefan was just ahead of him, twigs catching in his hair.

The dead moved fast, quicker than their rotting limbs and deceptive shamble should be able to carry them. Jesper had outrun one, once — that had been a bad day — but now he was matching Stefan's pace, and the sounds behind them drew closer. The bunker doorway gaped ahead, dug into a hill, bright flag fluttering atop the pole set above it.

Stefan barrelled through the door, hardly slowing, and tumbled to the dirt just inside. Something grazed Jesper's shoulder as he followed, and he pivoted in the doorway, slashing the head of his arrow across the face of the closest corpse. It fell back long enough for Stefan to kick the door closed, and he held it braced as Jesper slammed the deadbolts and hauled the heavy wooden bar into place.

For a moment, neither of them spoke. Stefan lay sprawled on his back in the dim light, both feet still braced against the door. Jesper fumbled for a flint and tinderbox. The door rattled a little in its frame, but the bolts held.

"Fuck," said Stefan eventually, sitting up as Jesper lit a small storm lantern with a taper from the tinderbox. "That was close."

"The hell was Ulf doing?" said Jesper, hands still shaking with rocketing adrenaline. "Should have spotted those way before they got this close."

"It's getting dark, and we're a long way out." Stefan grinned. "Which was not my idea, I'd like to add."

"Shut up." It had been Jesper who'd insisted on following the deer further, mostly because Lydia had brought in the last three and he'd been starting to feel inadequate. "Are you okay? Nothing got you?"

The scar on Stefan's forearm shone in the lamplight, a mess of twisted tissue where one of the shambling dead had sunk jagged teeth through his skin. Edvin had burned out the wound with a heated brand, and Stefan had been locked inside one of the bunkers as they waited to see whether the infection had taken hold. He'd been lucky.

"Clear," said Stefan. "What about you? You were closer."

"I think I'm okay." Jesper remembered the brush across his shoulder, and paused. "Actually, check my back?" He turned, propping himself between Stefan's knees and tipping his head down.

Stefan swore softly behind him and Jesper went cold for an instant, but Stefan was quick to reassure him. "Close one. There's a rip in your vest but it hasn't gone through."

"Ah, they'll never catch me." Jesper leaned back, resting his head against Stefan's chest. The door rattled again, and footsteps thumped on the turf overhead. "Looks like we'll be stuck in here for a while."

"Mm." Stefan picked a leaf from Jesper's hair. "Could be worse."

"Bet it's...over four hours?" Jesper's voice was idly curious.

"I'm not betting on zombie hordes, Jes."

"You just know I'm right." The door shook again as something hit it hard. "Persistent, aren't they?"

"You could use a bit of that yourself, to be fair."

Jesper looked convincingly wounded. "I'm plenty persistent."

"You put more effort into getting out of work than it would take to do it."

"More fun that way."

Stefan dropped into Thorn's voice. "Slacking off again, Stormrunner?" He laughed as Jesper jumped, startled. "Hmm...remind me again how long your count of dishwashing fatigues is by now?"

"Four months or so." Jesper grinned. "But I'm not doing them now, am I?"

"You'd rather be attacked by zombies than wash the dishes."

"Yep!" A bony finger crept under the door, and Jesper whacked it with the hilt of his saxe. "I'm starving," he added, looking hopefully around the bunker. "Do we have any food?"

Stefan shook his head. "Maybe if you'd hit that deer..."

Jesper shot him a rude gesture, and Stefan grinned again. "You're cute when you pout like that."

"Fuck you."
