Grammar: Prepositions

Having prepositions is important to clarify the action of a sentence in relation to a place, person, or thing. Here are some prepositions:

lon - at, in, on

kepeken - using

tawa - to, going to

tan - because of, due to

Prepositions are fairly easy to use; in a sentence, they go after the object or verb, and they can even act as a verb by themselves. Multiple prepositions can be used in the same sentence.

Mi lon tomo.

I am in the house.

Jan pona sina li tawa telo suli.

Your friend is going to the sea.

Mi moli tan nasin ale.

I am dying of natural causes.

Grammar: Proper nouns and Names

In Toki Pona, names are adjectives. One can think of a name as an adjective which describes what to call something. To specify a specific person, one would say jan ____ , which refers to a person whose name is that word. A place or country would be ma ____. A language would be toki ___. Names that aren’t already in Toki Pona can be written in Toki Pona either as they would be normally or modified to fit a few sound rules. These rules are:

Use only Toki Pona consonants (p t k m n s l w). Take consonants that aren’t these and change them to the most phonetically similar one (there are usually multiple fair choices.)

Syllables consist of a consonant followed by a vowel, followed by an optional “n” sound.

The first syllable of a word does not have to start with a consonant.

Kama pona! Let’s jump straight into this week’s lesson.

Grammar - Seme?

Statements are fun and all, but let’s get into the real meat of conversation. Questions: how do they work in Toki Pona? There are a few types of questions, like there are in English:

What/Seme questions:

To ask a what question, simply take an existing statement and replace the word that you want to know about with the word seme.

Sina moku e seme?

What are you eating?

Nimi sina li seme?

What is your name?

Ma seme li tomo kala?

Where do fish live? (What place is the home of fish?)

Yes/no questions

There are two ways to make a yes/no question. One is to put anu seme at the end of a statement.

Sina li jo e akesi anu seme?

Do you have a lizard?

Mi toki pona anu seme?

Do I speak well?

Ni li pona anu seme?

Is this good?

The other way to make a yes/no question is to repeat the verb in the sentence and add ala in the middle. This is easier than it sounds.

Sina tawa ala tawa?

Are you going?

Ona li jo ala jo e soweli?

Does he have a cat?

Sina lukin ala lukin e ni?

Did you see that?

To respond “yes” to a yes/no question, repeat the verb.

Ni li pona anu seme?

Pona.

Ona li jo ala jo e soweli?

Jo.

To respond “no”, simply reply ala.

Sina li jo e akesi anu seme?

Ala.

Sina tawa ala tawa?

Ala.

oh wow this is the exact intersection of my interests.

I like the idea behind these names but I think they are a little gramatically confusing. For instance, to me "ilo jan" reads with "ilo" as the noun, and "jan" as the adjective, i.e. "person tool". Not sure what that means, but the concept of "machine person" would probably be "jan ilo", I think.

I like the names, especially how literally Looks to the Moon translates basically literally, but I don't think they would introduce themselves with the full term for iterator. I think they would say something like "mi ilo Lukin E Mun. mi jan pi ilo nanpa" with the meaning of "I'm the Looks to the Moon machine. I'm a number-machine person." I also like this because using only "ilo" as the head noun feels very tragic considering their creation, due to thr connotation of "tool". I also vaguely recall a thing where head nouns for names should be one word, but I may have completely imagined that.

For the slugcats, some of these are complete sentences rather than phrases, due to the fact you can't do relative clauses in toki pona. For instance "soweli pipi li kala" means more like "the bug animal _is_ a fish", not "the bug animal _who is_ a fish". It's not necessarily a bad thing but it's a little unwieldy. I'd go with "soweli pipi kala", as in "the fish-y bug-y animal".

Your translations are super poetic, so here are my attempts (heavily inspired by yours):
