Fire and Water
A Mermaid!Severus AU for prompt 3 of @marauders-rarepair-fics
Prompt: Dry
Ship: Snily
Words: 201
Like an underwater fire, wild strands of hair danced around her face after she dived off the cliff laughing and screaming like crazy. Severus knew the salt irritated Lily’s eyes, he knew her eyelids would be shut until she resurfaced, and even though he was aware that what he was about to do was wrong and he was betraying her trust, with a single flick of his long, dark tail he reached her and brought his lips, cold and thin, to hers, plump, and soft and warm. It was just a chaste peck, its ghost already forgotten once the sun had dried her face, but still enough, for now, to quell the desire that led him to rise to the surface day after day just to see her walk on the beach barefoot and collect shells and pieces of polished glass from the shoreline. What Severus couldn’t have known was that Lily had, if only for an instant, opened her eyes when she felt the water move abruptly around her, and no matter how brief a glance she managed to give him, she recognized his thick black hair, his pale skin and his aquiline nose and had decided she wanted more.

Snape & The Little Mermaid 🧜‍♂️
Finally, I can unveil my commissioned Snarry artwork, which was actually completed earlier this year!
This piece is an illustration for a delightful fairy tale “COEUR ECLATANT” written by my client, who requested a stained glass window style with an artistic touch of Art Nouveau, specifically inspired by Mucha’s style.
The experience has been truly enjoyable, as Mucha has always been one of my favorite artists, and Art Nouveau is one of my most beloved art periods. Not to mention, I’ve been a Snarry fan for a long time.
In this enchanting little story, Snarry the Hunter is a seemingly pragmatic character who struggles to acknowledge his deep affection for the little mermaid, Harry. In contrast, Harry is a frank and sincere mermaid, full of curiosity about life on land and completely unreserved in his unconditional love for the first—and only—human he has ever saved (although Snape cruelly denies ever needing help at the time! 🤣).
This is a tale of love between two characters who know so little yet so much about love. I’m still eagerly waiting for my client to reveal the ending!
My client has also created several related products based on this piece, which I’m excited to share with you all:
🔹An Acrylic Stand resembling a stained glass window (currently in its semi-final form)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
🔹 An Acrylic Card (Also in its semi-final form)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I hope you all enjoy this piece as much as I do!

apparently there's a difference between sirens, selkies, and merrows in the HP lore and my ass did NOT research before drawing any of these so now i guess yonal is a half-selkie, half-siren in this AU 😭😭😭
my headcanon is that selkies in this world can still shapeshift like in the original mythology and sirens, well, they got those banger vocal chords. Yonal can turn into a human but at the cost of hurting himself whenever he tries to speak so he just doesn't </3 however he sings like an angel in his mer form
anyway im drawing snape after this ehe ive found a fish for him 🐟🐠

The Slytherin dorms look out into the Black Lake. Denizens of the Black Lake, thus, can look right in to the Slytherin dorms.
Art to accompany this ficlet I wrote after chatting with @dastardly-lemondrops a few weeks ago; which drew a bit on the scary mermaid post that lives in my brain and the enjoyable mermish sign language headcanon (that I just had to ruin a little bit).

Soooo I know it isn't quite ideal and I definitely need to take some anatomy practice for drawing. But I haven't really drawn anything in ages and I hadn't prepared anything, I just drew right away. So for that it is pretty okay. Next time I'll be more diligent and slow with the face certainly.
But I did some art, which is a good thing, so here it is, my Snape fanart, mermaid world, 🌊 (one with flash and one without) 😉 :

(I gave him something akin to the dark mark tattoo but I didn't want to make it look too much like it, it is an underwater world after all.)

Snape Preference ~ Books He Recommends
Severus Snape Masterlist
Context You ask him for something good to read and he gives you a pile of books he thinks you'll enjoy. (This is excluding the obvious amount of potions and herbology books he probably has)
The Secret History by Donna Harett Under the influence of a charismatic classics professor, a group of clever, eccentric misfits at a New England college discover a way of thought and life a world away from their banal contemporaries. But their search for the transcendent leads them down a dangerous path, beyond human constructs of morality.
Tumblr media
The Resurrectionist: The Lost Work of Dr. Spencer Black by E. B. Hudspeth
Philadelphia, the late 1870s. A city of gas lamps, cobblestone streets, and horse-drawn carriages—and home to the controversial surgeon Dr. Spencer Black. The son of a grave robber, young Dr. Black studies at Philadelphia's esteemed Academy of Medicine, where he develops an unconventional hypothesis: that the mythological beasts of legend and lore—including mermaids, minotaurs, and satyrs—were in fact humanity's evolutionary ancestors. And beyond that, he wonders: what if there was a way for humanity to reach the fuller potential these ancestors implied?
Tumblr media
Masters Of Death by Olivie Blake
There is a game that the immortals play. There is only one rule: Don't lose.
Tumblr media
The Maidens by Alex Michalides Edward Fosca is a murderer. Of this Mariana is certain. But Fosca is untouchable. A handsome and charismatic Greek tragedy professor at Cambridge University, Fosca is adored by staff and students alike—particularly by the members of a secret society of female students known as The Maidens.
Tumblr media
What Moves The Dead by T. Kingfisher When Alex Easton, a retired soldier, receives word that their childhood friend Madeline Usher is dying, they race to the ancestral home of the Ushers in the remote countryside of Ruritania.
What they find there is a nightmare of fungal growths and possessed wildlife, surrounding a dark, pulsing lake. Madeline sleepwalks and speaks in strange voices at night, and her brother Roderick is consumed with a mysterious malady of the nerves.
Tumblr media
Murder Your Employer by Rupert Holmes Who hasn't wondered for a split second what the world would be like if a person who is the object of your affliction ceased to exist? But then you've probably never heard of The McMasters Conservatory, dedicated to the consummate execution of the homicidal arts. To gain admission, a student must have an ethical reason for erasing someone who deeply deserves a fate no worse (nor better) than death. The campus of this "Poison Ivy League" college—its location unknown to even those who study there—is where you might find yourself the practice target of a classmate...and where one's mandatory graduation thesis is getting away with the perfect murder of someone whose death will make the world a much better place to live.
Tumblr media
Botanical Curses & Poisons: The Shadow-Lives of Plants By Liz Inkwright In both history and fiction, some of the most dramatic, notorious deaths have been through poisonings. Concealed and deliberate, it's a crime that requires advance planning and that for many centuries could go virtually undetected. And yet there is a fine line between healing and killing: the difference lies only in the dosage! In Botanical Curses and Poisons, Fez Inkwright returns to folkloric and historical archives to reveal the fascinating, untold stories behind a variety of lethal plants, witching herbs, and fungi.
Tumblr media
Dracula by Bram Stoker Irish author Bram Stoker introduced the character of Count Dracula and provided the basis of modern vampire fiction in his 1897 novel entitled Dracula. Written as a series of letters, newspaper clippings, diary entries, and ships' logs, the story begins with lawyer Jonathan Harker journeying to meet Dracula at his remote castle to complete a real estate transaction. Harker soon discovers that he is being held prisoner, and that Dracula has a rather disquieting nocturnal life. Touching on themes such as Victorian culture, immigration, and colonialism, among others, this timeless classic is sure to keep readers on the edge of their seats! Now available as part of the Word Cloud Classics series, Dracula is a must-have addition to the libraries of all classic literature lovers.
Tumblr media
A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik I decided that Orion Lake needed to die after the second time he saved my life.
Everyone loves Orion Lake. Everyone else, that is. Far as I'm concerned, he can keep his flashy combat magic to himself. I'm not joining his pack of adoring fans. I don't need help surviving the Scholomance, even if they do. Forget the hordes of monsters and cursed artifacts, I'm probably the most dangerous thing in the place. Just give me a chance and I'll level mountains and kill untold millions, make myself the dark queen of the world.
Tumblr media
Hope you enjoyed this quick idea I had. Also, all of these books are amazing and I 100% recommend all of them!

To Begin Again
EIGHT
Summary: You're a new teacher at a large and influential school. It's a risky step for you, as you've been running from your ex for almost two years. But when Dumbledore asks you to take on a class at the renowned Hogwarts, you can't refuse. However, your life as a newly arrived teacher won't be easy. Especially when the other teachers don't seem eager to make friends. Or rather, two teachers in particular: Sirius Black and Remus Lupin.
Author's Note: Welcome, dear readers. Please leave your comments if you enjoy fanfiction. This fanfic takes place almost in the real world (with the addition of werewolves) and is not a wizarding fanfic. There will be some differences and changes in things from the Harry Potter story or other fanfics in the HP universe, but I promise to do my best writing this fanfic. There will be a love triangle coming in this fanfic. So, dear readers, just as in this fanfic it's meant to imagine Remus Lupin as being Andrew Garfield and Sirius Black as being Ben Barnes, now I present to you the fancast of Severus Snape as being actor Enzo Vogrincic. Imagine him as Snape if you can. I dedicate this chapter to my friend @dipyouuinhoney , who had a birthday this week. Happy belated birthday ❤
SEVEN NINE
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The days until the grand ball hosted by Hogwarts passed too quickly. At least it seemed that way to you. Between helping with the school's organization and teaching your students, you've been more than busy. So busy that you can say you haven't seen Sirius since the last time you were together. Which would be a great step towards forgetting everything about him, but it's a terrible step considering that the two of you will have to spend tonight, at the Hogwarts ball, monitoring the students together. You tried to convince McGonagall that you could handle the ball on your own, but she insisted that you would need Black's help. Fortunately, she has been so busy with suppliers and organizing the event that she hasn't noticed that you and Black barely look at each other. With just over an hour left before the party starts, you hear a knock at the door. Upon opening it, you find Harry and Ron all dressed up, holding their little ties in their hands.
"Would either of you like to tell me why you're at my door almost ready an hour before the ball?" You say, giving space for your two students to enter. Obviously, they want help with their ties, but it doesn't seem to make sense to you why they would come looking for you.
"Harry said you like to help. We knocked on Professor Black's door, but he didn't answer. We thought we could ask for your help." Ron says, lightly tapping Potter's arm. Harry adjusts his glasses as if he's nervous.
"I'm your assistant today, so could you help us? I promise to be the best assistant in the world." Potter says, smiling, while Ron seems to be trying to figure out how to put a tie around his neck. You smile at the boys and then kneel down to help Ron. It doesn't take long for you to tie both Weasley's and Potter's ties.
"Know that I'm honored to be the second teacher you come to for help with a problem. Fortunately for you two, I learned how to tie a tie when I was younger because of my father. If you want, I can teach you, but if you ever need help again, you can come to me anytime." You say while helping the boys, and they look at you in amazement.
"Professor, you've treated us well, so can I tell you something?" Harry says as you finish tying his tie and Ron is looking at himself in the mirror.
"If it's a problem, tell me tomorrow, Potter. I mean, if it's something urgent, maybe you should tell me now." You say, looking at Potter and waiting for him to quickly say what he wanted to say.
"I just thought you should know that my godfather has been asking about you. Even though you two don't seem to be talking." You feel a bit embarrassed. A teenager telling you this. It's almost funny how you didn't expect it.
"Thank you for the advice, Mr. Potter. But how about we just focus on the ball and dancing on this beautiful night?" you say, regaining your composure and trying to be as professional as possible. However, the fact that Potter wants to talk about Sirius with you alerts you that the two of you are becoming too obvious.
"I'm just saying that sometimes when we avoid someone, it means something else." What Harry says affects you, but you just smile, finishing adjusting Harry's suit and noticing how cute he looks.
"Allow me to say that I believe spending a lot of time chasing after someone also means something. Something bigger than disdain or anger." Harry looks a bit uncertain about what you're trying to say but nods as if he accepts what you mean.
"Professor, do you think Hermione will like seeing Ron dressed like this?" Harry asks, obviously trying to change the subject and focus on Weasley, who was so engrossed in his own reflection that he only seemed to realize there was a world beyond the mirror when he heard Harry's comment. Ron playfully hits Potter's arm with some force, and the two start giving each other light slaps.
"Ron, don't worry. Hermione will like seeing both of her friends well-dressed. And stop wasting energy on nonsense. Use that excitement on the dance floor. Boys, do you need anything else from me?" you ask, standing up from the floor and looking at yourself in the mirror. The boys quickly get ready to leave your room.
"Malfoy is outside. I think he needs your help, but his great pride wouldn't let him come here. Thank you very much, Professor Y/L/N, for helping us," Harry says as Ron leaves your room. It seems like he's sharing ultra-secret information by the way he speaks, but deep down, you know his intentions are good.
"Mr. Potter, it's a pleasure to be a good teacher for you all. I count on you to keep an eye on everything at the ball until I can get there. Remember that Sirius and I are available to solve any complications tonight. But don't forget to have fun. You deserve it." Harry seems pleased to hear your words and finally leaves your room. You wait for him to leave so you can go look for Malfoy. It's funny how Potter wanted to alert you about Malfoy, even though they are declared enemies. If their relationship can even be considered enmity.
"I heard someone needed a teacher's assistance, so I came to see if I could be of help," you say, catching Malfoy by surprise under the same staircase where he was grumbling days ago. He looks at you with a hint of fear, perhaps afraid of being seen in a vulnerable moment. You sit next to him on the stairs, adjusting your dress to avoid wrinkling it. Malfoy's suit looks very different from the ones Potter and Weasley were wearing. His suit has beautiful silver and green details, and it looks like it was made by the finest haute couture.
"Who wears this rubbish nowadays?" Draco says, throwing his tie away, and you can feel how frustrated he is with the whole situation.
"Malfoy, it's normal to feel frustrated by things you don't know how to do, but acting like this isn't appropriate. I'll help you with what you call rubbish, and if you want, I can teach you how to tie your tie another time." You say, going to where Malfoy threw the tie and picking it up from the ground. Seconds later, you're tying the tie knot, which is already around Malfoy's neck. He seems a bit shy, as if feeling foolish for his behavior.
"You look beautiful, Professor. I confess I didn't think a teacher would be capable of dressing so well. Maybe you're dressed too well for a teacher," Draco says as you finish adjusting the tie around his neck.
"Is that supposed to be a compliment?" You ask as you look at him, assessing. This boy seems to not know how to compliment someone. Maybe you should teach him someday.
"Did you dress like that to try to get the attention of Professor Black or Professor Lupin? Forget it, I already know the answer. Professor Lupin said he wouldn't be attending the ball tonight. He's kind of odd, maybe even a bit suspicious. It always seems like he's hiding something. On the other hand, Professor Black is quite annoying. He's always on my case because of Potter. And to think Professor Black is my relative. But he seems to favor his little godson more," Draco says, as if analyzing your possible love interests. You smile, listening to his opinion about the two.
"You throw these pieces of information at me as if it's nothing. Since when are you and Sirius relatives? And not that it's any of your business, but I dressed like this for my own reasons. I don't want to draw anyone's attention," you say as you watch Draco stand up and adjust his suit delicately.
"The fact that you only picked up on that information shows that you agree with the idea that Professor Lupin is suspicious. And Professor Black and I have been relatives since my mother is his cousin. And no offense, Professor, but you definitely dressed like this to get someone's attention," Draco says, finishing getting ready and leaving, leaving you confused and pensive. Your students took the day to make it clear that they can see what's going on in your personal life. What a mess.
An hour later, you were already in Hogwarts' ballroom, and the party was in full swing. Harry was watching people dance and chat next to Sirius. Draco was dancing with Pansy Parkinson. But they were exchanging glances as if each were waiting for the other to do something wrong. Ron and Hermione were dancing while following Luna Lovegood as if the three of them were dancing together. You could bet it was because neither of the two friends wanted to ruin their friendship.
"In thinking that you used to dress like this for me, of course, not so dazzling, but always attentive to details. Easily the most beautiful woman in this hall is in front of me," you don't move, you could recognize whose voice is speaking almost in your ear from thousands of kilometers away. The expensive imported perfume he always wore. Bought with the dirty money from the fraud Severus Snape became.
"What are you doing here, Snape?" Your tone of voice conveyed the anger you felt at seeing the man you once loved in front of you; while he seemed to relish seeing you angry. Snape's fingers tracing through your hair and then across your face as if he were trying to recognize you by touch. You close your eyes as you feel your whole body shiver.
"Did you really think you could hide from me? Run away from someone who loved you so much? Who trusted you even though you were a treacherous little rat?" He speaks, holding your face with his hand. Clearly, he wants to intimidate you. You have however learned to defend yourself splendidly. You approach him as if you were going to kiss him, getting so close to him that even you would doubt his true intentions. However, you sink the high heels you're wearing into his fancy shoes. He holds your arm tightly as he writhes slightly in pain.
"This treacherous little rat has some news for you. Do you want to threaten me? You'll get revenge. I'm not afraid of you, my love. In fact, now seeing you here, I feel sorry for you." Your contempt for your ex seems to shine through your words. However, he seems to have enjoyed it. He gives you a malicious smile as if he relished the pain you caused him.
"Is there something wrong here?" You hear Sirius ask from behind you. Great, Sirius is about to meet Snape, and you'll have to prevent Snape from harming him. One thing your ex was, besides being fraudulent and a terrible example of a professor, was jealous.
"Sorry, I was asking Professor Y/L/N about donations to Hogwarts. How rude of me. My name is Severus Snape. Y/N and I used to work together at the old school where we both worked." Snape says, extending his hand toward Sirius, who shakes it firmly as they lock eyes.
"That kind of matter is better handled with Professor McGonagall. If you want, I can take you to her." Sirius Black says to Snape, seeming uncomfortable with his presence. It's strange because you didn't tell Black about your ex.
"That won't be necessary. Unfortunately, I don't have time today to enjoy the party or have much chat. Please tell Professor McGonagall that this ball is stunning. It was a pleasure meeting you, Mr. Black. I hope to keep in touch, Miss Y/L/N." Severus Snape says, kissing your hand and leaving the hall as if he's being scolded for misbehaving and walks away repentant.
"You shouldn't have interrupted." You say as you head towards the dance floor, feeling a bit confused about what to do. Sirius must have noticed because he takes your hand and guides you to dance. He holds you firmly as he puts his arms around your waist, bringing you closer. You look at him, grateful for his help but reluctant to let it show. In fact, you're afraid it might backfire on him.
"You're welcome, dear. Lupin told me about you and this guy. I would never let anyone do anything to you in my presence," Sirius speaks near your ear, as if wanting to keep the conversation private between you two.
"Your heart is in the right place, but Lupin had no right to open up this story to you. And you took too much risk just now. He will notice that you and I…" There's something crazy about how this dance has made you less inhibited. You look at Sirius as if you can feel that he knows what you're going to say. There's a big tension between you two.
"Me and you, we like each other. We desire each other. We want to be with each other even though we can’t because we’re both so stubborn." Sirius says, looking into your eyes. You don't know what to do after hearing what he said. The music stops, and you both step away from each other.
"You don't want me." You say, amidst the people dancing around you and Sirius. He looks at you with a hint of disappointment in his eyes. Now, you both are just a few steps away from each other, away from the dancing crowd.
"Don't confuse things. My wanting you is only outweighed by my desire to protect my relationship with Lupin. But I do want you. I want you close to me more than I want to push you away to avoid complicating our lives." Sirius says, stepping closer to you, both of you locking eyes, and you're unsure of what to do next.
"When you say our lives, you mean yours and Lupin's. I think that says more about our relationship than you realize. For now, I think it's more appropriate that we focus on the ball rather than our private lives." You say, stepping away from Sirius and heading to the other side of the hall where the ball is taking place. You try to focus on your students, watching what they are doing and trying not to think about anything else.
To be continued...

Severus snape x mermaid reader 🧜‍♀️🌊✨️
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The waters of the calm lake gently rolled onto the white sandy shores. The clear water stopped reaching a pair of black leather boots.
Those boots belong to a man of grave desolation. He was alone. He was exhausted. He was broken.
His impassive, cold gaze looked over the horizon. His black eyes bore into the water that reflected his own sorrow. Within his grasp, he held a letter, a letter from someone that sparked life into him. A letter from someone he loved and lost.
Tears streamed down the line of his hooked nose. The silence is immense. All the memories that led to nothing but a boy resembling a man who he hated and yet loved for the eyes were all that was left of hers.
Within the letter, it contained a picture, a picture of a family with a young babe. His lips curved into a slight frown. Reaching the other tip of the picture with his pale, slim fingers. Beginning to tear the picture in half. On the right side was a woman, donned with bright red hair and glinting green eyes. Her smile was the only thing that caught him off guard, allowing him to express emotion.
The gentle tide rolled in and out as the man grieved his loss. He placed a hand to his eyes, covering them as he sobbed in murmurs and whispers. "Lily".
Within the waters, a curious head popped out. Your eyes stared at the man weeping quietly, muttering one word, over and over. You had no clue who this odd human was, but you knew he was in peril. Most humans that pass were often witches or wizards flying over the lake or trying to find something that's lost.
You dove back into the water, allowing your tail to flicker above the surface. Your body gently swayed up and down within the murky water to get closer to the man.
Your head popped above the water once more this time, reaching your hand out to touch him. As the mysterious man felt something wet and soft touch his, he looked up with a startled gaze, stumbling back. "What in merlin do you think you're doing!" He said in a startled, scenic tone.
"You weep. You cry. Your heart aches." You say in a gentle curious tone.
"Keep your filthy nose out of my business, you pilfering creature." He said in defence.
"Help. I try to help." You push closer, allowing your body to slither on the shore, only enough to allow the waves to splash against your gills.
"Do not speak of this to anyone, or I shall curse you back to the depths." He was weary.
"Paper. Words. Hurt you." You said, trying to decipher his sorrow.
"Who is lily." You said, provoking the man's emotion even further.
"ENOUGH! YOU ARE TO DROP YOUR NOSEY MIND OR SO HELP I WILL!—"
"Kill me." You said simply.
His slender fingers pinched the bridge of his nose. "I will not answer anymore protruding questions. In short, you dunderhead. Indeed, I am in peril, and no, I don't need your pity."
"I need not know of your reason, I only want to listen." You said. "I want help by only hearing. Listening. Comforting."
The man in question dusted the sand off his black robes and cloak. Brushing the black strands of hair that reached his cheek bone to the side.
He couldn't explain it. Perhaps it was due to the loneliness or desperation within him. He wasn't asking for an audience. They weren't a student. They weren't going to refer to anyone else. It's not like she would understand. Oh dear merlin, why not.
He sat down back down, his knees facing you. He didn't even care anymore. You were the only thing that could potentially be close enough to what he needed. A friend.
As he explained what was on his mind. The betrayl. The school. Dumbledore. The sacrafice. The letter. He looked down at the picture, hesitant to show you, but did so eventually.
Even though you weren't fully aware of human emotion. You pushed up with your arms, embracing him. Despite the fact you were dripping wet. He didn't care. He never really liked the idea of touching people, but in this moment. His fingers gently touched you back.
After this touching moment. He would visit the black lake, bringing books and potions to study as you listened. He even tried to teach you, which ended rather horribly, causing a puff of black smoke to explode in his face.
You found it funny but in the lightness, and thanks to your friendship, he ended up grinning ear to ear, remeniscing on his younger years.
He never allowed anyone to touch him, and he was cold-hearted toward everyone but you. He explained all his dreams and gaols to you. Which student he favourites and hates.
You spoke to him of the life underwater. He was rather fascinated. Your favourite moments were watching the sunset, leaning against him as you slept.
You were the one thing he truly needed.

The watchers in the water
The mermaids might be watching, the older students tell the first years.
They speak with their back to the windows, the shadows of fish flitting past.
No!  Don’t look!  That’s very suspicious behavior, my friend.  The light in the water is dim, it is easier for them to see us than for us to see them.
Now, you must learn a few Mermish signs, it is only polite. Bend your fingers this way and then flick your wrist like so to say hello.  Flutter your hand with these fingers curled and these two extended to say goodbye.  Yes, it is difficult, their fingers have more joints than ours and the webbing on their hands helps hold the sign in place. Here is how to spell your name with the syllables their mouths can make. Oh? Their mouths can say your name perfectly? Add a mistake to the name you give them. Just in case they decide to call to you when you're out at night to lure you into the water. Kids, those aren’t the teeth of an herbivore.
Stop staring!  Don’t make that face. They might be watching us right now.
Did you know? Albus Dumbledore speaks Mermish.
Yes, of course that is why you must learn to greet the mermaids at the very least.  Mermaids are very keen to communicate, they’ll usually come up to the window and there we can see them clearly.
Just watch what you tell them, you can’t trust them to keep your secrets, not from the Headmaster.
No!  Don’t let them know that you know they could talk to him!  That will only raise their suspicions and his.  You must never let them know we know they’re watching us.
No! You can’t just ignore them, that sort of rudeness will look suspicious too.  The mermaids will follow you from the Common Room to your dormitory and watch you from the dark water every night. You don’t want them scratching at the windows and singing your name for attention, do you?
Use their signs to talk to them, we don't want them trying to learn how to read our lips. Yes, they might know how already, but if they don't you shouldn't give them any ideas or incentive to learn.
You can ask them for advice, they love giving advice almost as much as they enjoy watching us, but you really shouldn’t take their advice.  They’ll report you right away if you do and frankly I would too.  Cannibalism is frowned on, children, there are tidier ways to get over heartbreak, poor grades, and a loss on the Quidditch pitch.
Ah, yes, I know they’re at the window now, I know you can see them watching us.  You can see fifteen of them?  Twenty?  There will be more out of sight.
Do not look at their teeth!  That’s very rude and will attract their attention.  They can and will remember your face.  Stay calm!
Now, hold your left hand down like so and take your right hand, bend these two fingers like this, and move the right hand around slowly from the mouth to your left hand.  Good, now you are telling them you ate a big meal.
We will teach you Mermish sign, children, it is very important that you be polite and not attract suspicion. Just be careful what you do when they might be watching you and always be careful what you tell the mermaids.
Because, you know, we’re all watching you too.
__________
Because drawing fish staring at Snape from the windows is fun and I had a fun time chatting with @dastardly-lemondrops about the potential for/perceived possibility of near constant surveillance at Hogwarts (and specifically the Slytherin dorms), and because I also like the idea of Slytherin students using a signed language to communicate with mermaids (...and because I also like scary mermaids), I tossed together a fast ficlet.
...and because the thought of Slytherin students being paranoid that the mermaids might be spying on them in their Common Room/dorms for Dumbledore (even if he wasn't! Like, it does not matter what Dumbles is doing because he COULD talk to the mermaids and asking if he is would only lead him to doing so) would have made Hogwarts seem even less safe for Severus as a student (since the Marauders with their map and invisibility cloak could find and torment him everywhere else in the castle)
