what are ur feelings on the execution of the magic reveal??
ok so i have manymanyMANY feelings on in which ill try to wrap up as cleanly as possible so lets just get into it
the way they like speedran the magic reveal??
to paint you a picture: i was super impatient when i first started the series lmao, and so i had watched maybe 4-5 episodes of the first season when i googled "when does arthur find out about merlin's magic"💀💀 i ended up getting the wrong answer because im stupid as shit so i was just surprised as everyone else when it ACTUALLY happened, but thats besides the point.
the point? this was a SUPER important plot point. everyone was waiting on the edge of their seat, every single episode, for merlin to finally pop arthur's bubble and reveal his magic. but five seasons passed, and we didn't get it until the last episode?? are you kidding me?? and because we only got it on the last episode, where arthur was dying, arthur was robbed of any true explanations or declarations or apologies like he—we—deserved. instead, arthur's reaction to it was brief and just not enough. he was disbelieving, then shocked, then angry, then sad, then accepting, all within what, like a day and a half? forty minutes of screen time? im sorry, after spending around 46 hours watching this series and waiting for the magic reveal, that just doesn't cut it.
2. we have to admit, the magic reveal in the last episode felt so NATURAL
sometimes i really struggle to hate the magic reveal, because no one can deny how perfectly everything fell into place. he got trapped in the cave, his father spoke to him, he escaped the cave and transformed himself into that old guy, he single-handedly wiped out the Saxons, arthur was struck, merlin found him and carried him away from the battlefield, merlin turns back into merlin, and then the fucking "I defeated the Saxons. The dragon, and yet— and yet I knew it was Mordred that I must stop." / "The person who defeated them was the sorcerer." / "It was me." / "Don't be ridiculous, Merlin. This is stupid. Wh—why would you say that?" / "I'm—I'm a sorcerer. I have magic. And I use it for you, Arthur. Only for you." (Your welcome for that, day after Christmas<3)
like, you CANNOT TELL ME that doesn't flow perfectly!! that everything that happened in that episode didn't flow perfectly!! the magic reveal was always going to be impossibly difficult to get right, but they got it right in the finale!! that is one thing i will always give the writers—I may have not liked the circumstances of the magic reveal, but the magic reveal itself was beautifully executed.
3. too little, too late
i read an article recently that really pointed this out, and while i disagree with most of what they said in the article, i agree with one thing: the ending was so, so unsatisfying. the magic reveal was so, so unsatisfying. what was the point of him even revealing his magic? the magic reveal was great, sure, but nothing actually came out of it. oh, for the next 24-48 hours of life, arthur can accept him!! but that's it.
there's the implication that gwen will legalize magic after the series, but merlin and gwen don't even get a final scene together! all in all, the magic reveal just wasn't enough. we ended so much more time for arthur to sort out his feelings, for there to be good days and bad days, to watch them relearn trust and love again. we deserved that kind of ending. we deserved the magic reveal to be in, imo, The Death Song of Uther Pendragon, or s5e3. give them an entire season to get through everything. you can still kill arthur!! but let them have that animosity. if anything, have them start out those last two battles on bad terms. let the travel to the lake be them relearning trust and love. let that be the emotional baggage they have to unpack in the finale.
just overall, do anything except what you actually did lmao.
alright!! i think those are the main three points? i think that wrapped everything up pretty nicely, so ty sm for the ask!! these are always the highlight of my month lol.

update on how my family’s managing after DotD
“tell them we’re devastated” HAHA
no joke christmas was ruined- felt the evil energy of the bbc merlin writers ten years ago, running through my veins, as I clicked on part 2 on prime video ;)
they soldiered through the first part like champs, only small comments on Arthur’s round table speech they wondered how Elyan’s seat had been replaced and immediately clocked Eira as a traitor bc ‘that’s something the show always does 🙄’
sisters were crying when Merlin was stuck in the crystal cave, and I was crying when he walked up the landslide of rocks after Balinor and disappeared into a halo of white light..
then the second episode started and I was
s h a k i n g
(still hearing the words ‘just really sad’ and ‘I can’t believe it’ and ‘she tricked us 😦’ in the living room as I type this up, and it’s been way more than 24 hours later…)
Gwen was so badass! 🥰 and Merlin was out there winning! And I remembered why this was so terrible the first time, the show works hard to give us this false sense of security.
I clicked on the episode knowing that within 5 minutes Arthur would be stabbed and I’d be able to retire from my long career as a loving older sister.
It was literally a ‘gasps hears around the world’ kinda moment, they all sat up and then, my second youngest sister the Mordred stan (she dressed up as him for our s2 finale costume contest) burst into tears! and I actually felt really bad.
But then the magic reveal!
It was deadly quiet when Merlin revealed his magic and there were a few long sighs when Arthur turned away to say ‘leave me’. I was pretty much inconsolable and this is my third rewatch personally. They did! make the connection between Merlin’s ‘fire dragon’ from ‘Moment of Truth’ and the one from this ep however :)
Then we had the long haul of waiting for the beginning of the real end really, and I was relieved to hear them giggle when Arthur and Merlin reminiscenced about their first market place fight, and Merlin’s ‘charm’.
then… The Real End
Of course my little brother (if you remember him from his story ‘Morgana’s Weak Quickening) had to gloat about how Merlin had ended her, just as he’d predicted, and everyone was shushing and glaring at him because it wasn’t the time lmao
I was already crying for real by the time Merlin had Arthur in his arms and they were exchanging their last words, and I was surprised to find later that they did! hear Arthur say ‘just hold me… please’ because I hadn’t heard it on my first watch.
There were no gasps or shouts when Arthur died, just silence…
No one jumped when the truck came on scene as a jumpscare (I was kind of mad at myself for getting startled even though I knew!), and then Merlin crossed our tv screen for the last time and I let the end credits play in full.
They shushed me after I attempted to speak in the two minutes after the credits ended, and it was so quiet for the next ten minutes I thought I broke them…
Their reactions:
Sister 1: ‘Wh-hat..?’
Sister 2: ‘HE DIDN’T DESERVE TO DIE’ (Mordred😵‍💫)
Sister 3: ‘But Gaius didn’t die?? I didn’t put ‘Arthur dies’ on my theory list…’
Brother: ‘I TOLD YOU SO. But… now I’m a little sad :(‘
Afterwards, I promised I’d let them all loose to look up any ‘spoilers’ for the show they wanted. (We have an unofficial rule that whenever we’re watching anything for the time, we can’t look up anything related for fear of spoilers. And I’m a very strict drill sergeant about this 🫡)
But they weren’t very interested…
Our Christmas morning was noticeably sadder. And I wondered again how families in 2012 had coped when their kids had struggled through the unfairness of the finale and still had to open presents the next morning… a mystery really…
They spent the whole. day. watching edits and playing sad music in the living room (to which my parents were very confused) and coming up to me to either rant or fight about the finale haha
Now my sister (the piano playing one) is learning how to play ‘Solas’ by Jamie Duffy on the piano bc she says it reminds her of Diamond of the day and she’s been very determined! All break, she’s been getting up to play ‘Solas’ and ‘Bond of Sacrifice’ and ‘The Love Theme’ and I’m proud of her, for getting this far and only a little concerned
- I think the kids are gonna be alright? lmao
They’ve made plans for fanart and fanfics and alternative endings and I think I’ve fully recruited them into the immoral fandom (if not happily) although I’m sure they’ll recover soon enough to join us in bittersweet reminiscence next year :)
oh! forgot to add one last thing
after rewatching ‘A Dragon’s Call’ last night my brother had one thing to say. “Arthur says ‘there’s something about you Merlin’ …but that something was that he would die in Merlin’s arms…” LMAO I almost died on the spot but I’m glad to see they’ve inherited the fandom’s morbid (or Mordred ;) sense of humor

Morgan Le Fay (Alter Ego) My Room Lines
Morgause
“Master~ Can we stay here please? A moment’s rest may bring you far after all!”
“Ah, you really like to work don’t you? No no, I’m not accusing you of anything. I know your drive after all...”
“No matter what, it doesn’t seem I’ll get use to fighting. I wonder if either of those two would-ah. nevermind!”
Bond 1 “...Oh, sorry Master! I was spacing out there for a moment. I’m...not really use to being...heh, nevermind me!”
Bond 2 “Your magecraft seems a little shaky lately. Are you sure you’re feeling well? You eating well? Maybe a nice plate of meat and potatoes will make you feel better? ...Wh-what do you mean that’s too heavy?!”
Bond 3 “How strange.  I’m still here. Usually I can’t remember where I’ve been or how I got where I am because...because...
...Well anyway, I can’t say it’s bad after all. I’d certainly be worried if one moment I was here with you and the next you left my sight. That-that can get rather scary...”
Bond 4 “... ... ... I can still feel them inside me, you know? ‘The Lady of The Lake’ and ‘The Fairy Witch’. My...other selves.
... Why? Why? WHY? Why do they have to exist? Why are they inside me? It’s not fair! I lost so much to them! So much of my life- Take, STOLEN from me by them! And even worst, they took my home away! I’m Morgause Pendragon, the daughter of Uther Pendragon! I am human! Not a fae! Not a witch! I. Am. HUMAN, ME!
So why can’t they just leave me alone?!”
Bond 5 “... I won’t be here for long. Even if this body were to see the end of your journey, I-I might not be the one in it. I was the first to fade away after all. It’s simply my fate...to be used and discarded by everything I love.
...Even so, I won’t run. As weak as I maybe in comparison to them...I won’t surrender a second of my time with you. With anyone. I’m here now. I am me.”
To Gawain “My son...my darling son. P-please don’t turn away! Please. I-I lost so much time with you. I can’t-I have to. Please, come embrace your mother. Before I’m gone.”
To Gareth “Gareth...my little pup. Look at you, you’ve grown up so much. I bet you had the lords at your beck and call. ... I wish I could have been there for you.”
To Agravain “Oh Agravain. It hurts to see you look at me so. And yet, it’s all my fault. If only I were stronger, if only I could overcome them. My little knight...I’m sorry.”
To Arturia “Arthur-no, Arturia isn’t it? To think I felt so bitter about what our father wanted...when there was so much to lose to that envy. I...I shall take my leave.”
To Mordred “Master, that knight over there?? That...wouldn’t happen to be Sir Mordred correct? ... Yes I assumed so, given her glares at me. Le Fay’s child with my own brother...There’s nothing I can do to help her, is there?”
To Morgan (Lostbelt) “You there, the witch. You have quite the nerve to show your face here. You, who abandoned her humanity for the sake of a kingdom. Your kingdom was a shame and deserved it’s fate. Glare at me all you wish, without the three of us you would be nothing.”
Likes “What do I like? Well, I always liked cooking. It was always such a treat to see my children’s faces light up when I cooked with all my heart!”
Dislikes “...Lake fae and evil witches.”
Holy Grail “Even if it is a heresy, I would like to wish upon it. Then maybe, I can finally be free.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vivian
“Master, come. We have much to do still. ...I know you must be tired, I understand your weariness. But still, we must persist.”
“There’s no need to worry about me. An adventure like this-it is a simple matter. Compared to guiding those troublesome fae...”
“Quiet, quiet, quiet. ...Sorry Master, I was...having some difficulties with...the others. Le Fay especially...”
Bond 1 “So, you have stayed by my side? How strange, most humans simply leave the lakeside after so long.”
Bond 2 “Your heart is weary. There is no point in lying. I know that feeling well myself. Perhaps I have been pushing you too hard. Come, rest. All need reprieve after all.”
Bond 3 “It seems my time has not come yet. Good. I cannot-I will not fade like before. I refuse to let things end like before.”
Bond 4 “It is so tiring. To have their thoughts, their minds inside me. Always, always a reminder. That I am more than the fae ‘Vivian’. The human princess and the raging witch-
...No. No. NO! I am here now! I will be the one to fight! I will be the one to guard the Human Order! I will be the one protect the Age of Man that Father wished for! Not the human Morgause! Not the witch Le Fay!
I am Me, Vivian, The Lady of the Lake!”
Bond 5 “Even though I am the fae Vivian, an existence incompatible with mankind. It was always the humans I loved most of all. The fae, so fickle and cruel. I guided and guarded them out of duty alone.
Why you may ask? Because it was mankind that my father Uther loved. He protected them to his last breath. And so shall I. Even if I may never see the Age of Man, I will protect and guide it. Especially you, my Master. I shall ensure your safety to death and beyond.”
To Lancelot (Berserker) “Master! Th-that figure cloaked in black! I-it can’t be! My son! This is what became of you? ... Who did this?”
To Lancelot (Saber) “I knew it. Of course my son would be here. There was no chance he wouldn’t answer the call to protect mankind. He grew into a splendid knight after all.”
To Mash “This feeling... You there, young lady with the shield. Come forward, let me take a good look. ...It really is, isn’t it? Don’t be scared young lady. I shall never hurt you. Now, come with me. I have much to discuss with you.”
To Fae Servants “*Sigh* It seems there are some troublemakers in this place isn’t there? Worry not Master, I know how to keep them on a tight leash.”
To Morgan (Lostbelt) “Ruler of the fae, huh? How pathetic. To have resorted to such evil. I do not care what your excuses are. I lead and guarded the fae myself. I sacrificed my place in the world. I expect no less of you.”
To Arturia (Archer) “How cute, thinking that little spruit is alike to my magic. Here, let me show you what a true Excalibur Vivian can accomplish.”
Likes “Besides mankind? ...I do enjoy watching the forest creatures prance about. The little bugs especially.”
Dislike “Lazy princesses and malevolent witches. That is all I’ll say.”
Holy Grail “It is a false wish granting device isn’t it? Still, if supplied with enough mana, it might just be enough to grant my wish To gain my freedom.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morgan Le Fay
“Careful now, Master. One wrong step and things will certainly go wrong. I know how much fun it is to lose yourself in the throes of battle. Hehehe...But your goal must come first.”
“That fire...that determination. Very well, I’ll join you in the fray. After all, I haven’t nearly indulged enough myself.”
“Your magecraft is rather lackluster isn’t it? Hm, whatever you call your ‘talents’, that doesn’t matter. Practice, practice, practice. Experience breeds excellence. I didn’t match Merlin with pure talent after all.”
Bond 1 “I must say, staying this way at will without being subject to the fickle whims fate...it’s rather nice. Thanks Master.”
Bond 2 “Fate is cruel. I know your pain better than most. Forced into the impossible by the will of others. But don’t let your heart waver. Through will and guile, you will gain your freedom.”
Bond 3 “Don’t hesitate to give me tasks. I find myself with more time than i know what to do with. Preferably with you around...”
Bond 4 “I’m sure you’ve heard about this before but...My other selves are still here. Deep inside, I can still here them. Their woes, their uncertainty, their hatred. All mine...
...Bwahaha! What a joke! As if I would let them trend upon me. It was my loathing that struck fear into Camelot. It was my malice that twisted the Green Knight. It was my love for Britian that allowed me to stomach sharing a bed with that liar. I am no feeble princess or passive fae. I am me, Morgan, the witch that loved Britian!”
Bond 5 “So here we stand still. I’m sure you caught on but I hate the Age of Man. Tearing away all the work I put out, fading everything I’ve done into legend. Acting as though I was never here. For it’s sins, I will always spur it.
So why am I here? Because I would rather have an Age of Man with Britian than not. Be it the destruction of history or man, I will not stand for it. I will rage and hate and burn until all is done. So long as we stand on the same ground, I will be here. I can’t trust the other two to get the job done after all.”
To Mordred “Hm, that defect of a homonculus is here? Master, you are best off sending it away. It’s incapable of following orders or performing tasks sufficiently. I would love to fix it but that’s beyond my reach.”
To Arturia (Alter) “Tch, that liar dares to attach my name to something so weak. She preaches that the strong rule over the weak, shall I teach her who is truly strong then? Gwahaha!”
To Merlin “Ah, Teacher is here too. How unusual, that fickle asshole couldn’t be asked to cut a blade of grass, let alone save humanity. He’s not even really here is he?”
To Fairy Knight Tristan “Master, this annoying brat won’t leave me alone. Acting all familiar and friendly with me... Maybe I’ll teach her what it means to truly be sadistic. Perhaps by rending her limbs asunder...”
To Arturia “So the King of Liars has come as well. Maybe a trip into Hell will teach her the place where she belongs...but that will have to wait, won’t it? She still has her uses after all...”
To Oberon-Vortigern “That mana. Another embodiment of Britian is here?! It feels like that failure Vortigern...yet...it’s so different. I must dissect him, to know!”
To Morgan (Lostbelt) “Ah yes, that other me. Heh, what a fool she turned out to be, no? She rages against man, fae and knights, wasting all her efforts in the process. Focus, my dear. Focus is the key to victory. I did not waste my time with man or fae, I put my all into the slaying of Arturia. And which of us succeeded, hm?”
Likes “A rough night with a man below me, of course.”
Dislikes “My other selves. Unlike them, I will not hide the truth.”
Holy Grail “Hm, I have no need for such a thing. Unlike them, I will not cling to a false hope. It will be my hand that cuts them out like the parasites they are.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

@bloomiii asked: Hey!  Do you think merlin actually hates Mordred?
Heya!  I’m assuming this is a follow-up question to the ask that @once-and-future-gay sent me the other day, and I gotta say, I love this question just as much as I did that one, so thank you!  :D  It’s a great ask - relevant one, definitely, for Season 5.
I have kind of a lot to say about it, so I’m going to put most of this reply under a cut, but the short answer is this:
No, absolutely not.  I don’t think Merlin hates Mordred.
I think Merlin hates himself.
I wrote in the previous post on this topic (which I think this ask is a response to) about the actual reasons why Merlin is in conflict with Mordred, none of which are based on personal dislike and all of which come back to Merlin knowing that he has to prevent Mordred from killing Arthur, not out of a selfish personal desire to keep Arthur safe, but because Arthur’s survival is supposed to be the thing that is going to bring peace to the land and liberate the magical world.
But Merlin, as I said in that post, does not want to be in conflict with Mordred.  He likes Mordred.  He says as much, to Gaius.  He cares about Mordred as someone who shares his oppression, as shown in the beginning of the Disir.  He agrees to keep Kara a secret from Arthur, at the beginning of 5.11.  And Mordred’s philosophy - “the love that binds us is more important than the power we wield” - is literally as close to Merlin’s own as it can be.  That is exactly how Merlin, at his core, sees the world.
Everything Merlin does to Mordred, he does for no other reason than that he thinks he has to.  (And I discussed in that other piece how Merlin is not foolish or mistaken for thinking so, either - important to keep in mind.)  But all of the things he has to do go completely against his nature, and by the time we hit the end of 5.11, I really feel that Merlin has descended into a pit of self-loathing that the show, because its ending is so poorly constructed, never allows him to climb out of.
Every decision Merlin is forced to make about Mordred makes him hate himself a little more.  The decision to let Mordred die in 5.05 is visibly traumatizing for him.  He takes no pleasure in leaving Mordred behind for Morgana in 5.10.  And 5.11 is the ugliest, most soul-killing situation Merlin has been confronted with yet - he is torn between doing what he truly wants to do and what he feels like he has to do, when Kara comes into the picture.  He initially tries to hide Kara from Arthur, because there is no part of him that wants a Druid to be captured and harmed, even if she was with Morgana’s forces.  Mordred tells Merlin, “she’s one of us,” and Merlin agrees.  “Your secret is safe with me,” he says (and those are sacred words for Merlin; they’re exactly what Lancelot says to him in 1.05; this is not something Merlin would ever promise lightly).  He doesn’t betray Mordred’s secret, and when Kara is captured (through no fault of Merlin’s own) Merlin is the one who originally urges mercy, telling Arthur, “you’re breaking his heart/you’ll lose his trust” when Arthur claims he has no choice but to pursue execution.
However, after that, when Merlin learns that Mordred plans to escape with Kara, he boomerangs back to “he’s going to run to Morgana and then he’s going to kill Arthur and I am not allowed to let that happen/magical and godly forces have all told me that the entire fate of Albion and the future of magic all depends on me preventing Mordred from killing Arthur.”  And so he tells Arthur that Mordred is planning to escape, ultimately leading to Mordred and Kara’s recapture.
But THEN, after THAT, when they’re back in custody -  Merlin urges mercy yet again.  He tells Arthur to “free them both.”  He says, “How will one more death bring about the peace we long for?”  Merlin does not want Kara to be killed.  He does not want Mordred to suffer.  He does not want any of this to have happened; he did not rat Mordred out because he wanted to; he did it because he truly believed (for legitimate reasons) that he had no choice.  Like I talked about in that previous post - Merlin, at this point in the show, feels that his life has no purpose beyond the fulfillment of the destiny that has been prophesied.  He has come to see himself as a tool, with no intrinsic worth or value beyond what he can do to ensure Arthur’s survival (and thus the establishment of peace for all people).  He hates the things he’s supposed to do, but he literally cannot see an escape for himself.  This is just what he was “born” to do.
Even as far back as Season 3 we see this helplessness growing in him:
You feel trapped.  Like your whole life has been planned out for you, and you've got no control over anything, and sometimes you don't even know if what destiny has decided is really the best thing at all.
Merlin, in 5.11, doesn’t feel like what destiny has decided is the best thing.  But he also has reached a point where he feels like he has to do what he was told.  He’s seen the future.  He’s been told by multiple magical and divine sources that Arthur is the Once and Future King who is going to build the “the world we dream of.”  And so he does things that he thinks will enable that future to arrive (like preventing Mordred from running away with Kara), but because these things go so completely against his nature and cause him such pain, he then whips around and says, “Don’t kill her.  Let them go.”  He can’t help himself from slipping back into the kind of person he truly is on the inside.
He is trapped between his true self and what he feels is an inescapable duty.  And every step he takes away from his true nature makes him hate himself more.
Kara’s interview with Arthur, where she refuses to repent her “crimes” in exchange for her life, has one of the most telling, devastating shots in the show, when she says, “It is not a crime to fight for the right to be who you are.”  The camera, in that moment, is trained on Merlin’s face, not hers:
Tumblr media
That is done on purpose.  The cinematography is trying to say something.  It wants us to look at Merlin and listen to Kara’s word’s and hear the contradiction.  It wants us to recognize that Merlin is dying inside.  The absolute MISERY locked down in his expression here!  He has been forced to do things that seem to work against the very goal he’s been told he’s trying to achieve (to have the right to be who he is), and it’s been going on for so long that it’s shattered his soul.  He listens to Kara being able to say that, proudly, without fear, and he hates himself for not being like her.
But he can’t see any way to escape the things he knows he’s supposed to do.  So ultimately, at the very end, he does nothing, and Kara’s execution proceeds.
He despises himself for it, and when Mordred escapes and runs to Morgana, Merlin’s only reaction is a dull, hollow resignation.  He doesn’t blame Mordred for whatever’s going to happen next.
He blames himself.
Tumblr media
This is, yet again, another reason why the Merlin finale is garbage storytelling.
It makes no narrative sense for the show to give us 5.11, which ends with Merlin in quite possibly the darkest and most miserable, conflicted spot he has ever been in, and to then start the next episode with him having a raucous good time at the tavern.  Merlin, after what happens with Kara and Mordred, is not going to be out laughing and cheering, playing dice, and making casual, tongue-in-cheek, meta jokes about his secret like it isn’t the most painful and soul-destroying burden he’s ever had to carry (“Ah, I knew you’d discover my secret in the end.  There is just no fooling you, my lord!”).  It is inconceivable for him to be out partying, after the previous episode.  It’s insulting to me as a viewer, that the writers thought they could show this to me as if it’s an even remotely rational direction for the story to go, as if I’m not going ask “what the HECK is going on???” when I see Merlin gleefully stumbling home like a drunken frat boy, without a care or concern in the world.
There is ZERO tonal consistency between the end of 5.11 and the beginning of 5.12.  It’s horrendous writing, and it’s why I continuously say that Merlin BBC does not actually end, it just STOPS - abruptly cut off after 5.11, with a slapdash two-episode finale tacked on, one which does not actually resolve anyone’s arcs, or address any of the central questions of the show, or follow where the narrative was naturally heading prior to that point.
Merlin’s arc with Mordred is what finally takes him to a place where he is irrevocably, inescapably confronted with the conflict that he has been struggling with from day one - how is he supposed to justify the things that Destiny is asking him to do, when what it’s asking him to do seems to be hurting the very people he’s trying to help?  How is he supposed to reconcile his responsibility to his people (and HIMSELF) with an externally-imposed responsibility to protect Arthur?  He’s been wrestling with this cognitive dissonance for years, and 5.11 is the inevitable crisis point - Kara is dead, Mordred has defected to Morgana, Merlin’s secret is OUT, and Merlin has never hated or doubted himself more.  It makes no sense for the beginning of the next episode to show us Merlin living it up at the tavern.  Merlin is tortured, at the end of 5.11.  He’s dying inside.  The next episode was supposed to be a natural progression from that moment, meaning Merlin should have had the chance to finally confront his conflict head-on, rather than having it all completely wiped away by the pile of garbage that was the finale.
The correct fallout from Mordred’s “turn” should have been a reckoning.  Merlin never wanted to be in conflict with Mordred in the first place; he hated himself for everything he had to do, and I really think the end of 5.11 took us to a place where Merlin had finally been pushed over the edge; it was the last straw.  The only correct progression from that point would have been change, and Merlin was finally desperate enough to do what he needed to do to find himself again and make things right, but we never got to see it, because the people in charge decided to completely abandon every complicated question they’d been pursuing, in favor of “actually Arthur’s the good guy and we’re gonna pretend we didn’t just spend an entire episode reminding people how Camelot is still an unjust place.”
I don’t understand it.  The same people created 5.11, too.  They wrote Kara’s righteous speech.  They framed her execution as an evil, and they framed Mordred’s flight as something Merlin and Arthur brought upon themselves.
And then they did a 180 and dumped every ethical question they ever raised.  They never let Merlin find his feet or hold his head up high, and I’m honestly never going to forgive them for that.

hnoc's crimes, a non-comprehensive list:
- not enough palomydes (i like him, he's very polite and i think he should get to hold hands with tristan and isolde (the irish one), he wasn't mentioned once)
- killing off both tristan and bedivere in one sentence (the two original variants of tristan's death were sooo sexy. and this? this wasn't. also bedevere usually lives and there's a narrative significance to bedevere being the last survivor of camelot. plus the like,,, one story i know of where he does die, there's a patroclus parallel there, they could have at least given me that)
- the two isoldes aren't even mentioned (they hate to see girlbosses winning)
- spelled ywain "uwain", kei "kay", and gawaine "gawain" (self explanatory)
- only had one ywain (there are over ten)
- old galahad (he's supposed to be a 15 year old who thinks he's better than everyone morally and kins jesus christ and has an eyestrain carrd filled with religious imagery and may or may not bite people)
- lancelot x arthur bad (alright this is a more serious one but lancelot couldn't be paid to care about arthur, like at all, his feelings range from disinterest to dislike, but more importantly arthur was like,,, 30,,, when lancelot was born and it was even said in the vulgate that arthur viewed him as a son)
- lancelot x guinnevere bad (alright this is bc medieval authors hated women and shouldn't be carried over to modern works but she was SO bad to him)
- arthur x guinnevere bad (HE TRIED TO KILL HER!!! REPEATEDLY!!!)
- the mechs don't know what a broadside ballad is (pellinore and the beast is described as one. it isn't)
- gawain (self explanatory)
- how DARE you separate mordred's betrayal from the deaths of his brothers, how DARE you make him betray anyone before gawain dies, how dare you make him oppose gawain, how DARE you portray mordred as the sympathetic and rational brother (demonstrates clear misunderstanding of mordred's character)
- where the fuck are the other orkneys, you don't understand gawaine or mordred's motivations, fuck you (namedropping gaheriet doesn't count, he's two separate characters by the end of the tradition)
- no galehaut (the most canon queer character in the tradition who?)
- story beats Bad (the grail quest had nothing to do with the fall of camelot it was elayne of astolat's death that caused it!!!! this is elayne of astolat erasure!!!)
- clearly based on pop culture a.rthuriana (pop culture a.rthuriana sucks)
- has clear th wh*te influence (seen in the existence of pendragon polycule and use of the phrase "once and future king", th wh*te was,,, very shitty to put it mildly and i don't want to trigger tag this post)
- has clear m*deline z*mmer br*dley influence (morgan as mordred's mother, once again i don't want to trigger tag this post but she's genuinely a monster and i hope she's rotting in hell)
- fridged morgan (what the fuck dude, she doesn't even die in ANY of the original texts)
- morgan as mordred's mother (i'm pretty sure they only speak to each other in like,,, one text, and even then they're part of a bigger group)
- ygraine as mordred's mother/arthur's lover (what the fuck dude THAT'S ARTHUR'S MOM)
- i hate pellinore's ass don't give him his own song (i don't want to trigger tag this, you could've given the song to palomydes and it'd have the same effect AND make the slightest bit more sense)
- guinnevere doesn't even vaguely resemble medieval guinnevere (she's a political genius ready to step in as regent at a moment's notice!! her role is strategist not gunslinger and she dhouldn't have to be able to fight to be seen as strong!! if you wanted a woman strong in the fighting sense there was morgan!! or sebile!! or even lynnette!!)
- arthur was a dick in the original (arthur was a dick in the original)
- villainized ladies of the lake (nimue/ninniane's only crime was what? sealing away merlin when he tried to [redacted bc i don't want to trigger tag this], she was obviously in the right!! vivviane/ninniane's only crime was kidnapping baby lancelot but she didn't know any better and he was fine with it!! (ninniane was proto-vivviane/nimue from the vulgate))
- merlin was a [redacted bc trigger tagging] in the original (you didn't have to have brian be him... you could have had brian be nimue and it still would've worked...)
- i've said it before and i'll say it again, if you wanted love-triangle-turned-polyamory, tristan, isolde and palomydes were right there!!! (this is pop culture arthuriana though so i'm willing to bet money the mechs saw that isolde was married to tristan's uncle and that was it when mark didn't even like her and he married her to piss of tristan and it was palomydes who was in love with her the whole time and i'm cutting myself off here bc i was writing this whole thing about why i thought tristan, palomydes and isolde were definitely in love and it was getting long)
- the conspicuous lack of palomydes, old galahad, and the whole perceval getting mentioned once thing means we don't get to think about palomydes having to babysit catholic children in the woods while they bully him into taking them with him to hunt the fucked up giraffe he's dedicated years of his life to (i like that scene)
.
alright this is all i can think of off the top of my head but like. yeah. i'm definitely going to rb this.
no this isn't in the place of that hnoc Bad essay i was writing. no i didn't forget about it for a month, what makes you think that? i'll post it Eventually. until then, follow my sideblog where i post about actually good a.rthuriana and also gothic lit, shakespeare, and classics sometimes (but mostly a.rthuriana), @acegalahads,
also if you want a) further explanation for any of these, b) to know what i refused to type, c) actually good arthurian recs, d) an explanation why i think palomydes, isolde and tristan are in love, or e) just know about anything arthurian, feels free to ask me, this may become not just a hyperfixation but a special interest and i love infodumping

Kinktober - October 7 (Jekyll, Mordred, Hyde)
“So we tied and gagged him.” Mordred glanced over at Jekyll, crossing her arms. “What’s the plan now?”
Honestly?
He had no idea.
Never in his wildest dreams had he imagined that they would successfully transfer his alternate and berserker side to his own physical body. For the first time in their entire lives, Hyde was not a part of him. He was his own human being with his own mind and his own- well, they didn’t know about a soul, but still.
Jekyll could feel his hands on his own waist, feeling his own shirt on his own person.
He could finally wear briefs.
The thought made him snort a little.
Of all the things to do when one was separted from their evil half, he would immediately think about having the safety and security of a pair of men’s briefs rather than the boxers that Hyde would, on occasion, decide to let him indulge in wearing.
It had nothing to do with anything right now though.
It was actually a bit perverse to be thinking about right now.
“Oi! Jekyll!”
Jekyll jumped a little, looking over to the blonde only to find his gaze returning to Hyde.
“What do you wanna do?”
“I-I don’t know.”
“What? So why did we go through all this trouble? You’ve been workin’ with Da Vinci for months on this kind of shit.”
“I know. I know. I just…”
He reached down, petting Mordred’s beast of a cat while she wound between his legs. “I’m going to um… Allow me a few moment with my thoughts. Do you mind-“
“Eh, whatever. I’ll watch ‘im. Just think of what we’re gonna do. He probably will need his own room if we’re going to register him as his own servant for Gudako.”
He processed a total of none of that information.
In fact, he was already moving out the door and heading towards his closet that he shared with Mordred instead.
His mind was on other things.
Exciting, one personality kind of things.
However, Mordred remained behind.
Mordred sighed at the man as he skipped off to do God only knew what. The excited little smile that had been adorning his face had been weird. Not in that it looked wrong or he wasn’t supposed to smile, but more in the fact that it just made her face feel a bit warm when she watched him.
There was a strange heart issue that she needed Bedivere to help her with that she got sometimes when looking at Jekyll.
I’ll talk to Nightingale about it later.
“He’s getting to leave,” Hyde warned, spitting the fabric out of his mouth.
“That’s because he doesn’t really kill people… outside of the master’s commands.” Mordred glanced over at him, propping her feet up on a nearby table and pulling out her sword for sharpening. “You, on the other hand, have a real problem with that.”
“And you have a thing for men in knots.”
Mordred paused, mid-swipe with her whetstone.
“You have me bound here, waiting for who knows what, but I noticed you brought me to your old room… away from everyone.”
“No one knows you exist separate from Jekyll.”
The man hummed, those eyes glinting.
“I don’t know what kind of shit you’re gettin’ at.”
“You have a fetish mind. You wanted me bound here. You like the feeling of standing over me like the king that you are.”
“I do- The hell you mean?!”
Hyde laughed, leaning forward in the seat. “Untie me.”
“You think I’m that stupid?”
“Come on, I’ve seen you at your worst. You could take me easily. No, I’m just saying that you don’t want to let me go.”
“And why’s that?”
“…Untie me.”
The demand was given in a weird low voice, his eyes gleaming oddly as he smiled at her.
On the one hand, he was right.
She could definitely take him if he was up to something. The sheer amount of strength that she had was far greater than Hyde. She also knew he had weak ankles, much like another servant she knew from training.
On the other hand, he had something in mind. She wasn’t sure what it was, but she didn’t trust it.
Then again…
“Fine.”
Mordred pulled the ties off, setting them aside and looking at him expectantly.
If he had something to say, like he’d insinuated, then he needed to go ahead and get on with it. What was he talking about? What had he been trying to-
His arms wrapped around her waist.
His lips, surprisingly, slammed against her own, bringing a strange feel to her being. Her legs were wobbling, losing their strength as though he were some succubus. She couldn’t fight it when he was doing magic shit to her. Her hands, grabbing at his chest, was failing to find purchase there.
Legs buckled, she found herself slumping against him before those lips were back.
More of her air was gone.
Her hands were tangling in his hair, yanking hard only to hear the moan escape his lips.
“My king,” the man breathed. “You wanted this, remember?”
She was sure she hadn’t.
She was sure…
His mouth moved to her neck, pressing to a place that made her body shiver.
“My great king, ruler of me,” he breathed, that voice by her ear. “There is no other I’d follow, no other I’d bother to kill for. I can feel your warmth against my leg. I missed this between us. That fool doctor kept taking you from me. You want to do filthy things, not lay in the same position day after day.”
What?
She closed her eyes a moment, attempting to gather up her senses.
Mordred, a voice something like Bedivere’s own echoed in her head, I swear, you and the other knights share a single mind sometimes, one that can think backwards at all.
Her eyes opened to the man moving up her body, his hands stroking at her mouth.
“I’ll pay reverence if you do the same.”
“Wh-what the hell’re you talkin’ about?”
The soft chuckle came from his lips, the man leaning in.
“You make me think there’s something better than life or death. I intend to drink you down to the last drop, but you’re going to do the same.”
Drink…
What the hell was he talking about?!
Something came to her mouth, stalling her thoughts. She could feel the fabric of his boxers against her chest, brushing against her chest and sending a thousand sparks through her body. She opened her mouth wider, gasping a moment before he pushed himself in deeper.
She gagged, watching those eyes flash.
“Take me in,” he breathed. “Please… You gorgeous king, you.”
Damn him.
The man was no better than Merlin, getting his way without having to really try.
Mordred closed her eyes, attempting what he asked.
The feel of his length was as big as it felt elsewhere, but her mouth wasn’t the same as down below. Her mouth pressed on him more, her throat itching and aching as she found him moving slowly in and out. Her teeth grazed against him, her eyes drifting to look up at him.
“Take more, my king,” the berserker pleaded, “There’s no other way but to drink it in. Come on. Yes! YES!”
She could feel her throat tighten as he went in further. She couldn’t keep this up. Even if his hands were petting her and her body was on fire. Even if all she could do was hold his hips and hold him close, trying to take more of him in.
“Mordred… Ah, my king,” the man’s hair was wilder than before, his eyes closing a moment before he cried her name out.
“…WHAT ON EARTH!”
Mordred squirmed, pushing at the berserker and flipping herself over.
Jekyll’s arms wrapped around her, pulling her further away and leaping at his other ego. Their fists rose to one another, leaving her to pant and taste the semi-sweet taste that had flooded her mouth.
That had been… different.
“C-call me king again.”
The two men paused, staring over at her.
“Let him go for a minute, Jekyll.”
She had to know what they’d just done… and what it meant. But before that-
“Call me king again, Berserker.”

Arthur’s perspective after he’s been stabbed by Mordred; Merlin’s confession / canon compliant, dialogue taken from the show / short character study ~ 1200 words
-
He falls on the battlefield. Sword still in hand. And he wakes up, dead.
When he rouses. There’s a fire burning just in front of him. and he sees Merlin, his dark head turned towards the trees.
It’s almost like a dream. He must be dead; because his friend had left him.
“Merlin,” he speaks.
The man turns in an instant and he is at his side as he always should have been.
“How are you feeling?” the question is urgent and Arthur wants to say he’s fine but he can feel the ache through his body, radiating from his torso and it would be a lie. He tries to move and finds himself crying out as the pain spikes.
Not dead then, he decides, because he can feel the stab wound in his side, where Mordred’s blade had pierced him.
Merlin had been right.
“Easy,” Merlin’s voice comes and he can barely hear him as he stares up at the canopy of the trees. Arthur reaches for him blindly, hand easily finding his friend’s shoulder. “Lie back, lie back,” Merlin’s voice tells him, low and familiar as he grasps Arthur’s arm and keeps him there.
“Where– where ‘ave you been?” he struggles out the question because he needs to know. What was more important, than this final hour? So important it could tear Merlin from his side. It hurts.
“It doesn’t matter now,” he answers, voice solemn.
And Arthur finds it to be true. What does it matter now? It was over. Pain grips him.
“Ah! My si– my side,” he forces his voice back to something even as he speaks. He was a king, after all.
“You’re bleeding,” Merlin agrees, staring down at the wound. His words are calm but Arthur can feel the way Merlin’s fingers grip onto his wrist brace.
He struggles for breath and struggles to lift his head to look at Merlin, before dropping it heavily again and settling for staring up into the bright moonlight.
“That’s alright,” he says with a wry lift of his eyebrows, “thought I was dying.” Humor is easy, even now, if he could make Merlin smile one last time, that would be enough.
Merlin moves closer to him and at this angle its easier to see him leaning over Arthur, not smiling. No, he looks grim as ever. Grim as he always seemed to be in these last few years.
“I’m sorry,” he starts. And Arthur shakes his head, looking away from him and swallowing. He wants to tell him not to apologize. Merlin had not done this. This was not on his hands. And if it had been, like he said: It doesn’t matter now.
But he goes on, “I thought I’d defied the prophecy.” He looks back at the man above him, who was still holding onto him desperately. “I thought I was in time,” he adds, voice low.
Arthur can’t help the confused smile that pulls at his lips even as his face stays twisted in pain. His head falls back and he rolls his eyes letting the smile drop off his face and trying not to let the pain take over, “what are you talking about?” he asks. Even now, he could never make sense of Merlin. He stares off into the woods, Merlin had always been his closest friend and he wishes that, for once, something about him could be simple.
“I defeated the Saxons,” Arthur blinks and turns to look at him, “the dragon, and yet–” And Arthur sees the heartbreak in his eyes and hears the truth in his words, and none of it makes any sense at all. He watches Merlin struggle out the words, “and yet I knew it was Mordred that I must stop.”
He lets all of that go and decides it doesn’t matter if he can comfort Merlin. None of this was his doing. He gives him his best smile and lifts his hand to pat his shoulder a few times because it’s all he can do, “the person who defeated them, was the sorcerer,” he tells him easily.
These words only seem to serve to make Merlin look more wretched as he takes in a few uneven breathes, then, “it was me.”
There is a moment where, Arthur waits for him to crack a smile, for this to all be a joke and their last laugh together. It doesn’t come. Instead, his eyebrows furrow as he watches tears start to fall down his friends face as his breath shudders and he holds Arthur’s hand ever closer.
He shakes his head, and if Merlin won’t smile, he’ll do it for him, “don’t be ridiculous, Merlin,” he tells him because that’s what this is, ridiculous, funny, a joke.
The man above him does not waver, does not look anything but sorrowful as he stares down at his king. His friend.
Arthur’s lip curls in distaste, he no longer enjoys this, he never has. “This is stupid, wh– why would you say that?”
“I’m a–” his voice breaks and Merlin is no longer looking at him. Arthur stares at him in rising horror. Finally, he looks back up at him, fresh tears running down his nose as he says it, “I’m a sorcerer.”
Arthur stares at him hollowly, feeling as if he’s not really here at all and it is not because he’s dying. Gently, Merlin shakes his arm where he grasps it and admits, “I have magic.” He can only stare as Merlin sniffs and goes on, “And I use it, for you, Arthur,” he dips his head and keeps his grip on the base of Arthur’s hand, “only for you.”
“Merlin, you are not a sorcerer.” He tells him, voice certain and steady as he summons his strength to pull his hand from Merlin’s grip to gesture at his chest, “I would know.” He tells him, like it’s the simple truth, because it is.
Merlin’s hand moves to his shoulder like he can’t bear not to be holding onto him in some way. Arthur wishes he could just have his friend here, why, why did they have to do this? Why now?
“Look… here,” he offers, then turns away, reaching towards the fire, but not moving from Arthur’s side.
His voice hisses out a language that Arthur can’t understand, but he understands it is one of magic. Sparks drift up, naturally, until it isn’t natural anymore. They form a shape, a dragon, moving in the distortion of the smoke. He watches as it shifts, as though flying, then dissipates as they float away. Nothing makes any sense anymore.
He can’t look at Merlin, where he knows those eyes, which he thought were familiar, are waiting for him, watching him. For a long moment, he stares at the fire, he shifts away then, letting out a rough breath as he turns to look out at the trees as though they might hold some answer.
Finally, he looks back at Merlin, and for the very first time, finds himself afraid of the man. He glances to see Merlin’s hand still on his plated shoulder, he swallows and leans away as much as is possible in the state he’s in.
“Leave me,” he says.
Merlin’s brows furrow, like he can’t understand– like, he’s the one betrayed.
“Arthur–” he starts and reaches for him again.
He pulls his arm away, quickly, and it hurts, “don’t– just– you heard,” he struggles out the words. “Just…” he drops his arm, and grunts in pain, with no one, no one, not even his closest friend to hold onto, in this time of great need.
He lets his head tip back and tries to hold his arm in a way that doesn’t put weight on his torso. He breathes out labored breaths as he watches Merlin stand reluctantly and step away from him.
Arthur was not afraid of dying. Never had been. But being so alone, with the one person he thought he could always trust, so close. It was the most afraid he’d ever been.
