— Emma is an only child raised by a single parent, her father. Her mother got sick shortly after her first birthday and passed away shortly after her second. She doesn’t really remember her mother and only knows her through old home videos and birthday cards she wrote for Emma before she passed. ( Her mom wrote her a birthday card for every birthday until her 21st. I’m big emo about it. )

— Seeing as it was just her and her dad growing up, they’re very close. Emma is extremely protective over her father. Legend has it she quit gymnastics lessons when she was 10 and again with dance lessons when she was 14 because one of the moms were getting too chummy with him ( and she really wasn’t vibing with the idea of a stepmom; she has a perfectly good mom she can learn from and connect with through old videos ).

—  Much to Emma’s dismay, her father couldn’t be single forever and eventually got into a relationship with a new administrative hire at the university he teaches at. Sheila was kind, very helpful, seemed to make her father laugh, and very, very Christian. The last bit made Emma quite wary but she agreed that as long she didn’t push her beliefs onto them, she could stay. ( Her father thinks she was joking but she really wasn’t. )

— The idea ( read: insistence ) of attending Broadripple was something that was brought up to Emma by her father ( read: his fiancee told him to bring it up with her ) after an incident that happened between Emma, a friend, and her soon-to-be stepmom. She had no interest in moving schools but her dad ( who is normally 110% on Emma’s side ) seemed decided about how ‘good’ it’ll be for her. She saw right through his bullshit and immediately knew the entire thing was Sheila’s doing.

— Taking into account how close Emma is with her father, she feels deeply betrayed by him taking Sheila’s side after Emma and her friend were caught in a compromising position by her now-stepmom. It’s been a year since Emma enrolled into Broadripple, and her relationship with her father is still just as broken as it was before she left for boarding school. Though Emma’s father often makes efforts to mend their relationship, Emma is resolute in the fact that her dad can eat shit for picking someone he’s dated for 8 months over her.

HEADCANONS

— Emma is a very diligent student. Straight A’s. 110% focus in class. She finishes all of her homework the same day she gets it if she can, but will call you a ‘nerd’ for doing the same thing though because she’s #edgy like that. 

— Emma is very artsy. It’s not uncommon to see her with a camera around her neck. Sometimes it’s because she’s taking photos for yearbook, but usually she’s just collecting video footage because she enjoys making short videos set to music in her free time. (An example of her stuff.)

— Music obsessed. Usually seen with earphones in and her eyes on her phone. She’s probably scrolling through Spotify for a new song to listen to so she can forget she’s living in a cabin with a bunch of weirdos in the middle of the woods.

— Kind of a big loner. She just prefers her own company. She’s also a bit on the fence about Broadripple folk or letting anyone get close to her because 1) she really doesn’t like religious people because of the bad experience with her stepmom and 2) she now fully believes that because of her dad that it doesn’t matter how close you are to someone, they will pick themselves over you in the end. Big yikes. Talk about trust issues.

— The camera she uses a Nikon D5600 ( primarily for Yearbook things and video projects ) but she also has a Fujifilm X-T20 that she uses occasionally for more chill day-to-day stuff. It’s smaller and less hefty.

— When not in uniform, she is ALWAYS in an outfit that is predominantly black, if not all black. Winged liner, black stud earrings, and Doc Martens are also a staple in her appearance.

— Always has a pair of Apple earphones rolled up and on her person at all times in case her usual AirPods ( it has a black case with an onigiri sticker on the front and a middle finger sticker on the back #duality ) run out of battery. She’s that paranoid about being without music knowing she’s going to be in even closer quarters with her Broadripple classmates.

— Ties her hair up when she’s about to study or do work (and not that she’d ever tell anyone this but she was deeply influenced to develop that habit because of Violet Baudelaire from the A Series of Unfortunate Events books.)

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE RETREAT

What do they think about The Retreat?

Emma is pissed but she’d rather be at boarding school than to have to deal with her dad and her new stepmom’s just-married bliss everyday so she’s taking it on the chin. She thinks it’s ridiculous that her dad is paying this much money for her to get a fancy education but also she has to sleep in a derelict shack?? (It’s not a shack, Emma is just dramatic.) She likes the idea of her dad’s wallet hurting for something so stupid though so she’s weirdly for it and not for it at the same time. Mostly mad about the lack of WIFI. How is she going to do her homework? And what if she wants to listen to a song that isn’t downloaded on her Spotify? Chaos!

Do they have any previous experience with camping or other outdoors?

No. Emma is very much an indoor kid/person. She likes her privacy, she likes her space, she likes her toilet with its built-in bidet, her WIFI. But she has some experience with the outdoors. She’s hiked several trails back in Oregon with her friends and often likes to go to woodsy places for video footage. The outdoors as an aesthetic is *chef’s kiss* for Emma. She’ll hang outdoors as long as she knows she can inevitably return indoors with all of her favorite comforts.

What does their cabin bunk look like? How will they decorate their space?

Minimal but sentimental. Emma is trying not to get too comfortable because of false hope that this situation will be sorted sooner than later and she’ll only have to share a room with one person in not too long. She has a several things stuck on the wall her bed is against. A group shot of her and her friends. A polaroid of her cat, Oscar. A photo of her and Bernie, a too-good-for-this-world Saint Bernard that belongs to Sheila but has since moved into the Hayashi household now that she’s married to Emma’s dad. The first postcard her best friend managed to successfully send to her from Portland. A PDLIF bumper sticker.

Do they believe in the supernatural? To what degree?

No, Emma thinks that’s nonsense. She’s very much a rational person that’s grounded in science and logic. However, she can’t deny that some shady shit’s been going on at Broadripple since she’s been here. Sometimes she swears she sees figures rush past in her peripheral but she quickly reminds herself it’s probably just her imagination or information being relayed back to her eyes in a weird way, a cognitive illusion or something.

Are they easily spooked?

No. Emma is quite interested by eerie sort of things so it doesn’t turn her away. Though she has had to take a deep breath and grit her teeth sometimes to stomach certain creepy places around Broadripple (not that she’d admit that). She wills herself to not be spooked, let’s say that. Can’t fight the way your body reacts to some things though.

You’ll watch everyone else go mad. You don't much believe in the things everyone says they're seeing and hearing in the woods. Overreacting, indulging each other's fantasies, building nothing into something. But... you're the odd one out. Doesn't that make you mad?

FACTS

drea is from a family that places the importance of education and getting into a good college and getting a good job and legacy all very highly – and it all has to fit this sort of “traditional” view of success and drea just does not really fit it at all

and she never really has. growing up she was in her older brother’s shadow and was always pushing to spend more time on art projects or even artistic aspects of any other project. knowing from a young age that she’d love to be a creative of some sort but realising quickly that it wasn’t the life her parents had planned for her

which is how broadripple came into the picture. private school had always been the plan for the pearson children but boarding and catholic was a surprise. after her brother attended a boarding school, andrea knew she wanted to as well. she picked broadripple out. it was a good school, good reputation, good connections to ivy leagues. and the main thing for drea was that it felt just out of reach. a three hour drive wasn’t so far that she had to worry about her parents thinking she didn’t want to be around them (which was correct) but far enough that going home all the time would seem ridiculous, and far enough that their visits would be far and few in between. completely ideal location. 

and so she’s been at broadripple for three years and is arguably and completely different girl than she was when she started. given the freedom of distance from her parents she came into her own, quickly became more confident, unapologetic, leaned more into her creative side and flourished. though she wont admit it, and she often thinks the place is very intense and weird and so are the people: she loves broadripple.

that being said she’s fucking reconsidering that stance since they’ve sent her to go sleep in some ugly ass cabins lmao

HEADCANONS

drea has a very big cool girl complex (a la amy dunne cool girl monologue in gone girl), she wants everyone to think she’s cool, especially guys. she’ll pretend things are her own decisions and that she has to be convinced to do stuff but she’ll pretty much do anything if it means someone is going to think she’s a “cool girl” – she’s starting to outgrow this a little bit but we shall see

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE RETREAT

What do they think about The Retreat? she’s of two minds about it because on one hand she’s glad to be away from home and reunited with her friends. on the other she  doesn’t like just hanging out in the woods, and thinks the nighmore-ians are totally creepy and weird and doesn’t know if she really wants to stay in their weird abandoned cabins but will likely settle once she’s sitting around a campfire making jokes.

Do they have any previous experience with camping or other outdoors? no, not at all really. the pearsons arent big campers, preferring to stay close to work and the city so they don’t miss anything. drea has spent a bit of time on boats but mainly sunbathing, not any sort of survival skills. the most experience she has with the outdoors is sneaking through the woods back to campus after a party.

What does their cabin bunk look like? How will they decorate their space? a mess most likely. she has a lot of clothes and would have tried to shove as much as she could into one bag but that bag would quickly spread out once settled. she’s got a few postcards of places she’s never been stuck on the wall over her bad as well as a couple drawings done by either herself or jay.

Do they believe in the supernatural? To what degree? if asked, she’d say no absolutely not. and that’s mostly true. she doesn’t believe in ghosts, she doesn’t believe in monsters, she doesn’t even really believe the Edith Lynch story. but i think given the right circumstances (alone in the woods at some creepy cabins and hearing things for example) she would believe in that moment.

Are they easily spooked? yes and no. she’d be spooked by bugs or gross things, but not really by things jumping out at her and most weird noises she thinks she can explain away anyway.

A meditation on the Martyrdom of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Whither is thy beloved gone, O thou most beautiful among women? whither is thy beloved turned aside, and we will seek him with thee? — Cant. v.17

The martyrdom of Mary we find recorded for us both in the prophecy of Simeon and in the story of the Lord’s passion. “Behold,” said the holy old man, speaking of the Infant Jesus, “this Child is set for a sign which shall be contradicted, and thine own soul,” he added, addressing the Mother, “a sword shall pierce” (Luke ii.34, 35). Truly, O blessed Mother, truly did the iron pierce the Flesh of thy Son. After the death of thy Jesus – thy Jesus, I say, because although common to all of us He is in an especial manner thine – His Soul could not be wounded by the cruel lance that opened His side – not sparing Him even in death Whom it was no longer capable of hurting – but thy soul, O Mary, it could and did transpierce. For His Soul no longer occupied His now lifeless Heart, whence thy soul could by no means be withdrawn. Consequently thy soul was transfixed with the violence of sorrow, so that thou art justly proclaimed to be more than a martyr, since the sufferings thou didst endure from the force of thy compassion far exceeded all the pains that could have been inflicted on thy flesh.

“Woman, behold thy son” (John xix.26). Poor Mother! Were not these words to thee as the sharpest of swords, piercing thy soul “and reaching unto the division of the soul and the spirit” (Heb. iv.12)? Oh, what an exchange! John is given thee in place of Jesus, the servant in place of the Lord, the disciple for the Master, the son of Zebedee instead of the Son of God! Oh, how the sounds of those words must have pierced through thy most affectionate heart, since even the very remembrance of them is enough to break these stony, these iron hearts of ours! Wonder not, dearest brethren, that Mary is said to have suffered martyrdom in her soul. He alone ought to be surprised at this whosoever does not remember to have heard Saint Paul mentioning amongst the worst crimes of the Gentiles that they were “without affection” (Rom. i.31). Far removed from it also be the hearts of us, her poor servants. But perchance some one will say to me, “Did not Mary know beforehand that her Son was doomed to die?” Undoubtedly. “Did she not hope that He would speedily arise again from the tomb?” Most firmly. “And nevertheless, in spite of this foreknowledge and this expectation did she sorrow over her crucified Son?” Yea, and with a sorrow exceeding great. Let me ask thee, who art thou, my brother, and whence hast thou derived this wisdom that thou shouldst marvel more at Mary’s compassion than at the passion of her Son? Dost thou grant that He could die even the death of the body, and yet deny her the power of participating in His death by the affections of her heart? The Son’s death of pain was caused by love greater than which no man hath (John xv.13), and the Mother’s death of sympathy was caused by love the like of which was never felt before in the heart of a pure creature.

O Mother of mercy, the Moon, that is, the Church on earth, prostate at thy sacred feet, implores of thee, her appointed Advocate with the Divine Sun of Justice, implores of thee with devout supplication and by all the affections of thy most pure heart, that thou wouldst obtain for her the grace “in thy light to see the light” (Ps. xxxv.10), that thou wouldst conciliate for her the favor of thy Son Who loves thee and has adorned thee beyond all others, investing thee with a “robe of glory” (Ecclus. vi.32) and setting “a crown of beauty upon thy head” (Ezech. xvi.12). Thou, O Virgin, art full of all grace, full of the dew of heaven, “flowing with delights, leaning upon thy Beloved” (Cant. viii.5). Feed us today, O great Lady, feed us, thy poor mendicants, with the food of the spirit; let “the whelps also eat of the crumbs that fall from thy table” (Matt. xv.27); give not alone Abraham’s servant but his camels also to drink from thy overflowing pitcher (Gen. xxiv.18, 19), because thou art the true Rebecca chosen and predestined for the Son of the Most High, Jesus Christ our Lord, Who is over all things, God blessed for ever. Amen.

FACTS

The Bergmann family has always been odd, and Ezra is no exception. His family name had a reputation at Broadripple before he ever wandered its halls, well known for their staunch devotion to religion, fondness for quiet introspection, and dedication to the arts. This, however, was overshadowed by the suicide of Ezra’s older brother Emmanuel. 

Two years Ezra’s senior, Emmanuel was a dedicated member of the Sacristan Club and the unofficial Chastity club, but he had few close friends. In spite of this, his suicide during the summer before Ezra’s freshman year, and the rumors circulating the event (particularly, that Ezra was the one to discover his body) only adapted once school began.

Ezra has always had a complicated relationship with his parents. Their dogmatic approach to religion began to wear down on him as he grew older, beginning to challenge the beliefs he once held. The rift between them has widened since the death of his brother, but it’s more of a phantom void than a sharpened one. The family struggles to maintain closeness, but genuine connections are hard to reach. in spite of their differences, the family has a lot of love for each other, although they could most definitely benefit from family counseling ( before and after the loss of Emmanuel ).

Ezra always felt second best to Emmanuel in the eyes of his parents. he didn’t fall into religion with ease. he asked questions that came across as challenges, he bemoaned going to church and begrudgingly said grace before every meal. his perception of religion darkened as his brother became more volatile about the subject, causing several arguments between the two.

 Ezra was just as strange as the Bergmann’s of the past – moody, awkward, antisocial, and harboring a disconcerting interest in true crime and the occult. A frequent victim of bullying and foul rumors surrounding his ‘involvement’ in his brother’s suicide, Ezra learned the best way to survive Broadripple was to keep his head down, his headphones on, and bury his focus in creative pursuits, such as photography, art, music and his participation in the unofficial Broadripple Unsolved club. 

Other than this, he doesn’t have much direction for his future despite being a senior, and although he knows he should worry, he can’t manage to scrounge up the energy. In spite of his self-imposed isolation and wariness of others, Ezra covets companionship and belonging but is doubtful he will ever truly find it.

As a student, Ezra can find success with relative ease. He has a natural inclination towards the arts, but has been assigned to aid students in other areas of study in the past ( although in all honesty, he isn’t the best teacher )

A heavily active member of BAU, Ezra lives and breathes for the club, sometimes even becoming annoyed when he feels others aren’t taking their research and ‘responsibilities’ seriously. He’s been teasingly accused of being ‘obsessed’ with the case of Edith Lynch in the past, his drive to solve the case intensifying with the mounting abnormalities occurring at the Academy. Although he’d never say it out loud or acknowledge it to himself, Ezra has attached the Edith Lynch case to the suicide of his brother. Whether he knows it or not, his deep-set desire to solve the mystery arises from an unaddressed need for closure and healing within himself

HEADCANONS

he has a smoking habit that he picked up when he turned sixteen.

he seems perpetually incapable of wearing his uniform properly. His button up shirts are often wrinkled, his ties are crooked or improperly fastened, and he has a tendency to keep the top few buttons of his shirt undone ( as long as he can get away with it ). This is never intentional. Ezra has a bad habit staying up into the early hours of the morning, making him difficult to rise (and therefore perpetually late in the mornings)

due to his abysmal sleeping schedule, ezra often has dark circles under his eyes

his fingers are almost always stained by ink, paint, charcoal or oil pastels

it’s rare to see him without his headphones on

he painted the bottom of his skateboard himself. The design is faded and scuffed from wear and improper varnishing. what once was a skeleton with a blue, exposed, anatomical heart on a black background is mostly a scratched, splotched mess of color with a slightly more defined line work on the blue heart.

his hair is longer, typically messy and often hangs in his eyes

out of his uniform, Ezra usually dresses in the grunge style with layered t-shirts, black skinny jeans with tears, oversized tops etc. He also wears short sleeved button ups with t-shirts underneath.

Ezra enjoys photography. his work is typically in black and white and he uses a Canon camera that he received as a Christmas gift

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE RETREAT

What do they think about The Retreat?

Ezra doesn’t like it and suspects there’s something else going on ( of course ). he has so many questions: why just the two dorm buildings? why cabins in the middle of a remote forest? why locusts of all things? without access to the internet, Ezra spends a lot of late nights staring into the darkness trying to puzzle it all out, fervently scrolling through bookmarked webpages the moment he has access to the internet. Ezra isn’t squeamish about bugs or nature. As an artist he’s enjoyed the change of scenery, however the inability to binge watch netflix and have immediate access to the resources of the World Wide Web have agitated him. Not to mention having several students to a room also has him on edge.

Do they have any previous experience with camping or other outdoors?

Ezra has experience with ‘glamping,’ or, spending a few weeks at his parent’s fancy cabin in the mountains with access to running water, air conditioning, cable tv and internet during the summers. The experience at hand is entirely new to him.

What does their cabin bunk look like? How will they decorate their space?l

The first thing ezra did when he got to his bunk was fasten a sheet that could be pinned up or down so as to conceal the inside of his bunk. Ever an introvert, Ezra needs time to feel completely isolated and alone, which despite being in the middle of the woods, seems much harder to come by now than ever. Ezra is a cluttered person, but not necessarily messy. The wall beside his bunk ( which he also has ‘secured’ with a movable sheet in order to keep his investigations as private as possible ) is littered with news articles, photographs, webpages etc. complete with different colored threads connecting different pieces of evidence. During the move, ezra was forced to organize some of his other cases in three plastic accordion file folders, which he keeps hidden under his bunk ( yes three ).

Do they believe in the supernatural? To what degree

Ezra definitely believes in the supernatural. ghosts, demons poltergeists and possessions etc. are often the primary subjects of his research. he possibly even believes in God and Angels despite having doubts about the bible and the morality associated in them, although they command little of his attention. at most, Ezra’s opinion on religion is, “if God exists he’s a dick.” He doesn’t really take big foot seriously, but he believes in aliens. There isn’t a doubt in Ezra’s mind that something supernatural is going on at Broadripple. Currently, he’s most suspicious of demonic possession ( Edith Lynch case ) and a possible poltergeist ( the cause of the locusts ).

Are they easily spooked?

ezra is more terrified of other people than he is of the possibility of facing down a demon. if he wasn’t so driven to solve the case, he may be more likely to run away from perceived supernatural threats, but at the moment his desire to know the truth tends to supersede self preservation. That being said, Ezra is also very likely to attribute any kind of ‘suspicious’ occurrence to The Supernatural.

Extra curricular: She’s centre forward on the field hockey team, president of SWAT, is a buddy, Vice Chancellor for Women of Broadripple and a proud member of Sacristan club. She takes all of these roles very seriously.

FACTS

Faith is from Boston and is a middle child. Her older sister Hope is a living legend at Broadripple, she graduated a couple of years ago, was a huge sports star and is currently studying pre-law at Villanova. Her younger sister is Trinity, a sophomore and awkwardly trying to fill her bigger sisters’ shoes. Faith loves her sisters, and family in general, a lot. Hope’s her biggest role model, good thing she’s more than happy to fill those big shoes, and she’s constantly trying to make sure her younger sister doesn’t forget the values they were raised on.

If you couldn’t already tell from their daughters’ names, Mr and Mrs McKay are pretty much zealots, and they raised a very good Catholic girl. Faith is pretty much Broadripple’s poster girl so beware if you don’t feel like hearing all about God’s wonderful plan and every traditional value that she’s never thought to question.

Her uncle is a Bishop of Boston, it’s sort of the reason she went to Broadripple in the first place. She’s very proud but also has always felt like she needs to make him understand that recommending her wasn’t a mistake.

No fear there because she’s a model student: good grades, always willing to be involved in school life and tons of BA pride. She observes the rules to a t, no exceptions can be made in her book. Don’t worry, she’s more than willing to hold an intervention or two for those who are struggling more than she is…even if she hasn’t technically been asked to intervene

Your character might be a little shocked to see Faith roaming around campus again because she’s just spent six months in Malawi. As she was a dear friend of Maggie and Izzy, maybe a little more where the latter was concerned, Mr McKay became very anxious when the two seemingly disappeared. The day after her friends’ disappearances, Faith’s place at Broadripple was suspended and she was sent off to Malawi on mission with Hope.

She enjoyed it, she loves helping spread the good word, but she was eager to get back to school - even managed to keep up with her credits so she could slot right back where she was. She’s not thrilled about the whole insect thing, and even she admits the cabins are creepy, but she’s happy to be back.

Watch out for a little blonde girl running around looking like Shrek at house events because Faith isn’t just BA proud, she’s Melleray mad.

The best way to describe Faith is probably control freak. She’s a typical type A personality - she’s got everything arranged in colour coded notebooks with matching binders. She’s a major perfectionist so if she wants something done she does it herself otherwise she’ll just have to correct whoever done it wrong in the first place

She’s passively judgemental, she doesn’t mean to be mean or offend but she has such a small understanding of real world issues that sometimes it happens. If she gets defensive it’s only because she doesn’t understand something and can’t think of a bible verse that vaguely relates.

She’s a textbook people-pleaser so if you ask for help she’s going to find it very hard to say no.

She’s so sweet you’ll get cavities, always good-intentioned even if it doesn’t translate will. Every accidental judgement is said softly with a smile, her hugs are tight and sometimes unexpected because she believes anything can be solved with a good hug no matter who you are.

On the hockey field…well she’s a bit of a monster. You’d never belief it but that girl’s got some aggression. You’re likely to find her at confession after a match because competitiveness isn’t very holy and she definitely needs forgiveness for that wrath.

Is a master DIYer. Any life hack you see online? She’s done it.

Big football fan. Specifically the Patriots, used to have a Tom Brady poster that she made her uncle bless before games. She’s not ready to talk about the loss yet.

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE RETREAT

What do they think about The Retreat?

She came back at the wrong time, but Faith is an optimist so if anybody is going to make the best out of a bad situation it’s her. She will admit the cabins are a little creepy but she’s going to do her best to make everybody feel at home. She is pretty sure she saw hell hounds out in these woods once but she’s trying super hard not to think about that.

Do they have any previous experience with camping or other outdoors?

She’s just spent six months in Malawi, most of that being in a tent, but other than that she’s definitely taken a few family trips out to the woods. She’s not the most comfortable, but she’s not totally helpless either.

What does their cabin bunk look like? How will they decorate their space?

A lot of photos stuck to the wall beside her bed: her and Damian, her and the Malawian children she was helping, her and her sisters, an old photo of the god squad. Her bed sheets are pastel pinks, greens, and blues and the bed is always perfectly made. You’ll find a bible tucked between her pillow and the wall and a black hair ribbon tied around the bed post.

Do they believe in the supernatural? To what degree?

Faith is a big believer in the supernatural. Maybe not the ghosts because she believes the afterlife is heaven, hell or purgatory, but she is firm that demons are real and she saw those hell hounds.

Are they easily spooked?

Yes. It comes with the naivety. One ghost story - which she’s going to loudly proclaim they shouldn’t be allow to tell because it’s scaring people! - and she’ll be up for the rest of the night trying to rationalise that it is in fact a tree tapping against the window pane and not Edith Lynch’s victims here to act out their long awaited revenge.

Now for the fun stuff lol

Leon is a complete and utter history buff. He love’s it. It is the only kind of class he truly enjoys.

He might be smart with history but he’s definitely got that chaotic dumbass energy. One time he tried to eat his weight in gummy worms. Another time he tried to microwave a chicken patty, but instead of 20 seconds. He put it in for 20 Minutes. Broke the plate and had a hockey puck for lunch.

He used to be a total mommas boy. Especially after his mom caught his dad cheating and he went to live with her. Unfortunately, his mom died a few months after and he moved to his dad’s. That did not go over well. A lot of family tension. He put sardines in his dad’s finances shoes when she told him to call her mom.

He has this whole thing about thinking “what would my dad do?” and then trying to do the exact opposite.

He dose not have good impulse control at all. Leap first think later. He lacks common sense at times to. Both things he’s working on but generally isn't making a whole lot of progress. 

He loves animals. He had a fish in his dorm he named cat. He misses cat a lot.  

He tends to hold grudges for a long time. He’ll say he’s forgiven you but then you’ll hear about it two days later.

What do they think about The Retreat?

Leo is not really looking forward to the retreat. He misses his coffee machine and has never been much of a camper. He is, however, a big fan of bonfires and loves that aspect of it. 

Do they have any previous experience with camping or other outdoors?

Leo’s been camping in the mountains a few times but hasn’t been for a few years. He dose have plenty of experience building fires though. Mostly bonfires, but hey, sorta counts. 

What does their cabin bunk look like? How will they decorate their space?

His bunk tends to be a mess. He wasn’t very organized at the dorms and he’s not very organized here. He dose try to keep up the appearance of a mess free space. Leo has a picture of his old fish cat on the wall. And he has a poster Of Jim halpert looking at the camera.  

Do they believe in the supernatural? To what degree?

Leo 100% believes in the supernatural. He’s into all that cryptid stuff and is partially convinced he’s gonna run into  a wendigo or something on this retreat.

Leo is pretty easily spooked. It’s a bit of a problem really.

FACTS

Comes from a well-off family that she’s always referred to as  Stepford-caliber nightmare. Her father’s a plastic surgeon, and her mother comes from old money. Neither of them were particularly fond of the whole ‘parenting’ thing, so Alex was essentially raised by a revolving door of nannies. 

She learned early on that she could act out and get away with it. At first her antics were attempts to get her parents’ attention, but after years of failing, she did the things she did just to spite them. But once she reached high school and the truancy officer came knocking, her parents took note. Only then did they learn about her prior suspensions, how her homeroom teacher thought she’d transferred schools because she’d only seen Alex four times since the semester started. How she’d been swiping her father’s prescription pads and making her own money on the side. 

Unwilling to deal with her anymore, her parents shipped her off to her father’s Alma Mater. They painted the picture of it being in her best interest — something to make her ‘grow as a person.’ But Alex knew exactly what it was. She had finally gotten their attention, and they weren’t keen on dealing with the little monster they’d created. 

Once the bitterness at being unceremoniously tossed out, she saw her own silver lining. She didn’t have to care anymore. Not about angering her parents of impressing them, not about keeping up any sort of appearances when family friends were looking. She knew Catholic school would be a whole different set of issues, but she always welcomed them.  

HEADCANONS

She’s had trouble maintaining friendships since the moment she set foot on campus. She’s hot-headed and contemptuous, and she still hasn’t managed to dull her well-sharpened edges. It doesn’t even take a well-qualified therapist to point out her abandonment issues, but Alex has never been particularly introspective. She’s always been more of a ‘burn the ground and run’ kind of girl.

While she’s not particularly academic, she can get by. Often relying on well-copied notes or an exam placed just within her eye line, she’s a firm believer in doing what you have to do to get by. She loves art and music, though — it’s one of the few things Alex actually cares enough about to keep secret. She doesn’t want to open herself up to the kind of criticism she throws out so freely. 

She regrets her bullshit a lot of them time. She’s just too stubborn to admit when she was wrong. Alex is a master of a non-apology apology. I.E. ‘I’m sorry you’re mad’ instead of actually apologizing for whatever she absolutely did to piss them off. 

She’s oscillates between agnostic and atheist, depending on the day — but that’s one of the few things she keeps to herself. The idea of sitting through Mass truly almost bores her to tears, but one of the few things she actively fears is being forced into some mandatory Bible buddy bullshit. 

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE RETREAT

What do they think about The Retreat? Alex has been surprisingly tolerant about the retreat. Maybe it’s the option to finally make good on her year-long threat to run screaming into the forest and never come back. That, and the spotty signal is a better excuse than she ever could’ve asked for when it comes to dodging her parent’s bi-monthly phone call.

Do they have any previous experience with camping or other outdoors? None. The best she can do is start a fire, but she attributes that to binging four seasons of Naked and Afraid when she got the flu sophomore year. She’s always been a fan of hikes, but never in a practical or responsible sense. 

What does their cabin bunk look like? How will they decorate their space? Alex doesn’t really do much decorating. She traveled light when she first transferred to Broadripple, and has never been the sentimental or knick-knack type. Apart from an unmade bunk, her part of the room seems fairly unoccupied.

Do they believe in the supernatural? To what degree? She believes in it in the same way she believes in just about anything else — barely, and only when it suits her. She’s not superstitious enough to let it stop her from telling ghost stories if she sees the opportunity to give someone a decent scare. She absolutely believes Edith Lynch lost her shit, though.

Are they easily spooked? No.

FACTS

First-generation American, her parents are migrants from Turkey though she has family in Turkey, Georgia, and in New York and other parts of the United States.

She was born in the State of New York and has lived in Washington Heights her whole life. She spent a week in Boston before she and her parents drove to Broadripple for her first day of high school but that was the first time she’d ever been to MA.

Though she hasn’t traveled much of the U.S., she is well-traveled. Her parent's value international travel and consider it a foundational part of her education. They believe their children would be lost without an understanding of the world around them, other cultures, and other places. 

Went for Melleray house captain and obviously lost to Ryder and she is totally salty about it.

She’s proud to be the Speech and Debate captain but it’s not as shiny as house captain in her books.

She’s not great at field hockey but A for effort and she might be a little better if she wasn’t nervous about getting trampled by Gwen or Faith on the field.

HEADCANONS

She wanted to be a marine biologist when she was young, after snorkeling off the coast of Greece on a family vacation.

She now wants to be a lawyer, her father jokingly told her she would make a good lawyer because she was so good at arguing with her parents but the idea stuck in her head.

She’s meticulous about her school uniform, her shoes are always shined and her shirt and skirt are always neatly pressed. She’s a big fan of de-linting her blazer as well and you probably can’t borrow her lint roller, soz.

She pretends her father doesn’t let her date to make rejecting gross boys less awkward   ✌️ but if she has a reason to be mean, she’ll just be honest with them.

TUTEES; She’s a smart kid and she’d be more than happy to tutor your student as long as she can mention it on her college application.
