The last Infinity Room in this exhibit is my very favorite, The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away (2013). Most of you already know, but for those who don’t, I’m obsessed with space and what lies out there for us to discover. When I was young I desperately wanted to be an astronaut (really, I wanted to be the first artist to create off-planet art, but ya still gotta be an astronaut first,) but then I found out how much math was involved and moved on to other dreams. However, I never lost my love of the stars; to this day, I eagerly devour news items regarding freshly-discovered facets of our universe and humanity’s ventures into space, and my sincere hope is that we develop into a species that has sustainably expanded beyond our home system. Standing in this Infinity Room gives me a little taste of what it must be like to be drifting in the endless expanse of space, surrounded by soft velvety darkness and endless glittering stellar bodies. I don’t have many words to describe this; honestly, even days later, the sensation of this Room... feeling the diffusion of my cognizance into the illusion of neverending existence is still present within my mind and soul. When you enter the exhibit proper, you’re greeted by some of Kusama’s earlier works, Baby Stroller, Arm Chair, Blue Spots, Red Stripes, and Ennui, all part of her Accumulation series. I’m quite conversant with the first two; they’re a part of CMA’s permanent collection, so I’ve been seeing them my whole life... but it doesn’t make them any less interesting now! In fact, seeing them in context brings whole new shades of meaning to their familiarity. The next Infinity Room is Phalli’s Field, Kusama’s earliest Room, and the one I’m most familiar with. This was my first introduction to Kusama over thirty years ago, and 14-year-old me became obsessed upon first glance. Yayoi Kusama came into my education through researching the NYC explosion of Pop Art and Post Modernism, (I think I actually remember Yoko Ono referring to Kusama in literature about Ono’s YES show,) and her unique perspective on our shared universe fascinated and intrigued me. (1/2) Finally we come the penultimate part of the exhibit, The Obliteration Room (2002-present)! I imagine that this Room is probably the most fun that most people will ever have with an artist; after all, the art is made by us! I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed it (and the exhibit overall) because there simply are no words for how it feels to a) be a part of cooperative art in simultaneous joy and wonder with thousands of other people, and b) actually collaborating (albeit long-distance) with one of my favorite and most inspirational artists. The Obliteration Room is so much fun on so many levels! In this Room, you are not only allowed to touch the art, but you are actively encouraged to do so! Everyone gets to participate by placing dot stickers anywhere in the room that your fancy takes you, so this is a constantly-evolving, ever-changing piece that grows in character as the exhibit progresses. I don’t know about other stops on the tour, but here in Cleveland, we get two secrets just for us! The first is kind of obvious: you honestly can’t miss the life-size leg lamp that has become the unofficial symbol of Cleveland. But the second secret is much smaller and takes some effort to find - it’s a tiny little flat-cut silhouette of the downtown Cleveland skyline. Being in this Room is amazing and intensely fun! It’s very surreal to be in a complete-white-out living space. These pictures were originally taken on July 19, 2018, and I’m sure the Room is even more dotty now! Knowing that you and thousands of others are making this wonderment happen, spreading this much joy, is truly uplifting. Last week, I was lucky enough to experience the Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirror Rooms exhibit at the Cleveland Museum of Art, and it’s still alive in my heart and mind. I first discovered Yayoi Kusama in my early teens and became obsessed with her vision of the universe; her outlook was (and is still) totally entrancing, especially for a fourteen-year-old me struggling with a lot of feelings and opinions. I’ve been immensely excited for this exhibit for over a year, and now that it’s finally here, my happiness knows no bounds! Join me as I try to share the incredible magic we felt during our time there. Today’s photos show you what it’s like to enter the Atrium and approach the exhibit, then experience the first two pieces. The first thing you see is Kusama’s Narcissus Garden (1966-present) and the first of the Infinity Mirror Rooms, Where the Lights in My Heart Go (2016). Unfortunately for us, the door for that one wasn’t functioning properly, so we didn’t get the full experience of it, but trust and believe that we’ll be back before the exhibit leaves! In fact, I was told this Room won’t be continuing past CMA since it’s a privately-owned piece, so this is our only chance to feel this particular magic.
