Thalle La
Tumblr media
Duration 3 days Distance 48km Standard moderate Season Mid-June-September Start Khasumik Finish Shigar Zone and Permit open, no permit Public Transport yes Summary The best trekking route between Khaplu and Skardu gently ascends the attractive Thalle Lungma and crosses a snow-covered pass, emerging in the dramatic expanse of the Shigar Valley.
The large and green Thalle Lungma leads north-west from the Shyok River, 15km west of Khaplu and 85km east of Skardu. The upper valley divides, and the north branch leads over the infrequently crossed Tusserpo La (5084m), while the south branch leads over the easier Thalle La (4572m). Both passes lead to the Bauma Lungma, which runs south-west to Shigar. The British, who used the route between 1891 and 1947, preferred the Thalle La between Skardu and Khaplu, as it offered grazing for their pack animals.
The Thalle La, one of the few non-glaciated passes and one of Baltistan’s easiest, lends itself to backpacking. It can be crossed in either direction, and the Shigar trailhead is easily reached from Skardu. Because many trekkers use the Thalle La as a return trek from Hushe or Khaplu, the description below is from east to west. Early in the season, expect much snow on Thalle La’s east side, and even more on Tusserpo La.
PLANNING
Maps
The Swiss Foundation for Alpine Research 1:250,000 orographical map Karakoram (Sheet 1) and Karakoram (Sheet 2) cover the trek. Doghoni isn’t labeled, and Khasumik is labeled as Khusumik.
Guides and Porters
The trail over the Thalle La is not hard to find, so hiring someone is optional. Because the higher and harder Tusserpo La is infrequently crosses, hiring someone is recommended. Porters ask for a flat rate of Rs 220 per stage, including payment for food rations.
Stages
During the British era, the 60km from Shigar to Doghoni over the Thalle La was three stages. Now, porters ask for as many as seven stages. Negotiate carefully; seven is probably too many, but three is not enough.
GETTING TO/FROM THE TREK
To the start
An unsealed road goes up the Thalle Lungma to the large village of Khasumik and beyond to the open pasture of Thalle Brok (shown as Bukma on maps). Skardu-Khasumik jeeps and special hires. Khaplu-Khasumik special hires.
The least expensive way is to get off any NATCO or Mashabrum Tours bus a Doghoni Bridge west of Khaplu along the Skardu-Khaplu road and walk a day to Khasumik. The Skardu-Doghoni Bridge, and Khaplu-Doghoni Bridge and on NATCO and on Masherbrum Tours. Cross the bridge to the Shyok River’s true right bank and Doghoni, the first village on the Thalle Lungma’s west side at the valley’s mouth. Khaplu-Doghoni jeeps. From Hushe, you can walk downvalley to Saling, then along the lesser-used unsealed road along the Shyok River’s north bank to Doghoni in one day.
From the Finish
A NATCO bus departs Skardu, from near Hussaini Chowk, for Shigar, returning in the later afternoon. Jeeps  depart from the alley near Skardu’s Hussaini Chowk for Shigar in the morning, also returning in the afternoon. Skardu-Shigar special hires.
THE TREK
Day 1 : Khasumik to Thalle Camp
4-5 hours, 16km, 950m ascent
A wide track continues beyond Khasumik (2900m) to Thalle Brok, where another route leads south-west over the Kiris Pass to Kiris village along the Shyok River. Continue north-west up the Thalle Lungma one hour to Olmo, the highest settlement. At the herders’ settlement of Dubla khan, two hours above Olmo, the trail splits. The trail to Tusserpo La continues north-west, but follow the trail to Thalle La that branches south-west. One hour beyond Dubla Khan is Thalle Camp (3850m), another herder’s settlement, along a clear stream.
Day 2 : Thalle Camp to Daserpa
6-7 hours, 16km, 722m ascent, 1072m descent
Continue on a good trail through pretty pastures along the stream. Near the pass, the grass ends and the trail becomes rocky. Thalle La (4572m), two hours from camp, is marked by a large cairn and has a permanent snowfield on its west side. A steep and snow-covered rocky peak rises dramatically south of the pass. Back to the east is a magnificent view of high snowy peaks on the ridge separating the Thalle and Hushe valleys. To the west are the distant peaks above Shigar Valley. Descend the snow slope (a fine glissade) and continue through dzo pastures to herders’ huts at Daserpa (3500m), four hours from the pass.
Day 3 : Daserpa to Shigar
5-6 hours, 16km, 1171m descent
Continue downstream one hour through stands of cedar to herders’ huts at Baumaharel, where the stream from the Thalle La joins the main Bauma Lungma and the track from the Tusserpo La. The good trail down the Bauma Lungma leads in four hours to Shigar (2329m).

Today our camp will be on the debris of Baltoro Glacier so be prepared for a chilly cold night. Day 10: Goro I – Concordia We are walking in a gorge of high mountains i.e. Gasherbrum, Masherbrum, Cathedrals and Mustagh etc. Mustagh Tower is an eye catching peak on the route. We finally arrive at Concordia and camp under Mitre Peak. Day 11: Concordia – Excursion K-2 Base Camp Today, we will make a trip to the base camp of K-2, crossing Broad Peak base camp en route. The walk is through heavily crevassed glacier but trekking is safe. After photography and having cold picnic lunch at base camp, we start walking back towards Concordia. Day 12: Concordia – Ali Camp / Muneer Camp After breakfast, we will trek to Ali Camp / Muneer Camp, served as assault camp for Ghondoghoral La. Day 13: Ali Camp – Ghondoghoro La at 5650m – Kheuspang A very early start to cross Ghondoghoro La at 5650m, our main challenge of the trek, where we use fixed ropes to cross the crevassed slopes on both sides of the Pass. Once on the top of the pass, a clear day reveals superb panorama of the peaks all around. The Gasherbrums, Broad Peak and K-2 are visible superbly. We start descending down to our campsite and enjoy a relief as the hardest portion of the trek is finished and onwards is an easy walk down to Hushe. Day 14: Kheuspang – Dalsangpa It is an easy and short walk to Dalsangpa, meaning a field of flowers. Superb views of towering Masherbrum and other peaks from the campsite. We enjoy almost a free day as the walking is quite easy in comparison to the previous day's adventure. Day 15: Dalsangpa – Saistcho – Hushe Finally we are out from savage glaciers and start walking on dry ground. We descend down to Saistcho, a campsite along riverside with trees and greenery. Our walk finishes at green and fertile village of Hushe, the first permanent village after leaving Askole. Day 16: Hushe – Khaplu – Skardu We will drive by jeeps to Khaplu, a major division of Baltistan and known for its delicious fruits. Its other attractions include old Raja's Palace ( now turned into a hotel residence ) and Khanqah-eChaqchan. From there we will drive to Skardu and transfer to hotel on arrival. 16 Pakistani tourist spots you must visit in 2019
New Post has been published on https://www.hidoose.com/16-pakistani-tourist-spots-you-must-visit-in-2019/
16 Pakistani tourist spots you must visit in 2019
Tumblr media
Whenever we think of Pakistan, all that comes to our mind is terrorism, extremism, sectarianism, corruption, load shedding and inflation but despite all these issues, we immensely love our country.
Amidst all the chaos we have forgotten the beauty of our landscape.
Pakistan is full of breathtaking locations which will make you fall in love with this country all over again. If you are a tourist or love travelling then you must compile a list of places you plan to visit next year.
Dawn.com frequently publishes pictures of stunning tourist spots and historic places of Pakistan to highlight the positive image of the country and to generate awareness among the people.
Here are 16 destinations from our list which you must visit in 2016. Your experience would be, indeed, unforgettable:
1. Naltar valley
Naltar is famous for its colourful lakes, it is situated at a drive of 2.5 hours from Gilgit. World’s tastiest potatoes are cultivated here. Covered with pine trees, this valley doesn’t seem to be a part of this world.
If you really want to experience paradise in this world, you should visit Naltar at least once. This place will make you fall in love with it.
Tumblr media
2. Neelum Valley, Azad Kashmir
Opposite to the Keran sector of Indian-held Kashmir. From the Chella Bandi Bridge – just north of Azaad Kashmir’s capital Muzaffarabad – to Tau Butt, a valley stretches out for 240 kilometres; it is known as the Neelum Valley (literally, the Blue Gem Valley).
Neelum is one of the most beautiful valleys of Azaad Kashmir, and it hosts several brooks, freshwater streams, forests, lush green mountains, and a river. Here, you see cataracts falling down the mountains; their milky-white waters flowing over the roads and splashing against the rocks, before commingling with the muddy waters of River Neelum.
Pakistan’s blue gem: Neelum Valley.
Tumblr media
3. Shangrila resort, Skardu
In the extreme north of Pakistan, Skardu the central valley of Gilgit-Baltistan, is an epitome of beauty, serenity and wilderness.
After Jaglot on the Karakoram Highway, a narrow road turns towards Skardu. During the seven-hour journey, one is greeted with several streams, springs, and the hospitality of the local people.
After crossing the old wooden bridge built over the River Indus, one reaches Shangrila, a paradise on earth for tourists. It is a famous tourist spot in Skardu, which is about 25 minutes away by drive. Restaurant in Shangrila rest house is highlight of this place, which is built in the structure of an aircraft.
Tumblr media
Skardu: An embodiment of nature’s perfection
4. Gojal Valley
The Gojal Valley borders China and Afghanistan, with its border meeting the Chinese border at Khunjerab — 15,397 feet above sea level — and remains covered with snow all year long.
In the north west, there is Chiporsun, whose border touches the Wakhan region of Afghanistan. Wakhan is about six square miles in area, after which starts Tajikistan. The Karakoram Highway which connects Pakistan to China also passes through Gojal Valley and enters China at Khunjerab.
Tumblr media
5. Deosai Plains
Deosai is located on the boundary of Karakoram and the western Himalayas, and at no point it is less than 4000 meters above sea level. It remains covered with snow for 8 months. The rest of the year, it hosts a range of beautiful flowers of all hues and colours, but not a single tree is found in this plateau spread over 3000 sq. km.
Sheosar lake is also part of this. This lake is one of the highest lakes in the world. The deep blue water, with snow-covered mountains in backdrop, and greenery with wild flowers in foreground offer such a view in summers, that one is left amused for the rest of his life.
Tumblr media
6. Rama Meadow
Just a little ahead of Rama Village, which is 11 kilometres from Astore, is a beautiful and serene plain called Rama Meadow.
If you ever happen to find yourself in plain, ice-cold and milk-white water flowing in streams, sheep and cows grazing in peace, pine trees, Chongra’s ice-covered peak in background, and Nanga Parbat’s southern ridge is in view, then you are probably in Rama Meadow.
Tumblr media
7. Paye
Shogran had seen an influx of tourists, who trampled over its beauty, leaving it jaded. Siri Paye, nonetheless, still retains its strong attraction for tourists as a green plateau on top of the Hindu Kush. Engulfed in clouds and fog more often than not, it entices many as a rendezvous which allows one to observe Nature play peek-a-boo.
Here, you see numerous small ponds filled with freshwater, meet horse-riders wandering about, and smell wild yellow flowers blooming everywhere. With the Makra Peak set as a backdrop, the beauty of the Siri Paye meadows comes to life.
Tumblr media
8. Ayun and Bamburet Valley
Ayun district is a village of Chitral. Located 12 kilometres south of the city at the confluence of the River Bamburet . There are no words to describe the beauty of the mountains surrounding the village. Beyond Ayun valley is Bamburet Valley, it is one of the three Kalash valleys.
Bamburet is nearly two-hour journey from Chitral. Locals trace their roots to Alexander the Great and Greece. Bamburet valley is a picturesque valley with lush greenery and mountains that give you a sense of calm and solitude.
Tumblr media
9. White Palace Swat
White Palace Marghazar is the only breathtaking location in the Swat district that’s situated at a distance of around 12 km from the city of Mingora. Not only do tourists visit Marghazar for its natural beauty and pleasant weather but also to visit the historic White Palace (1941), built during the era of Swat state.
After the White Palace was constructed on the directives of the founder of modern Swat state, Miangul Abdul Wadood also known as Badshah Sahab, Marghazar became the capital of Swat state during summer season. Even today, after seven decades, White Palace remains an attraction for tourists.
Swat’s White Palace: Cut from the same stone as the Taj Mahal
Tumblr media
The Palace doesn’t just look beautiful in summer; even during winter it remains enchanting especially after snowfall. Also read: Swat’s White Palace: Cut from the same stone as the Taj Mahal
10. Kerthar area
The Kirthar range stretches from Sindh to Balochistan, serving as a natural border between the two provinces. This mountain range includes the scenic Gorakh Hill (5700), Kutte Ji Qabar (6877) and Bandu Ji Qabar (7112).
This region is not just known for its breathtaking beauty but also for its rich history. Spread across 150 miles, it is an ideal tourist spot due to several streams, springs and historic locations, however, it’s unfortunate that few tourists prefer to visit. The local population is eager to welcome visitors and want to make this area a better place.
Tumblr media
11. Mubarak Village Karachi
Mubarak remains the second largest fishermen village in Karachi. Bordering with Gadani (Balochistan), the landscape encircles a stark contrast of golden hills and turquoise clear waters.
Away from the city frenzy, this place welcomes you with a lot of love. As soon as you park near the shore, numerous boats are anchored floating on crystal clear waters, beneath the expansive blue sky.
Escaping to Mubarak village
Tumblr media
12. Rural areas near Punjab river
Punjab has been gifted with countless blessings including fertile land and lush green farms. Nature has also blessed Punjab with colors of every season, as winter ends vivid colors of spring spread around.
According to Syed Mehdi Bukhari, Sialkot, a city standing near the banks of River Chenab, is also known as the centre of artisans. Perhaps, not only the soils straddling this river, but also the people living near its banks owe their fertility to Chenab. Iqbal, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Shev Kumar Batalvi, and many other fertile minds have their roots here. The River Chenab flows from Marala, 24 kilometres from the city of Sialkot.
Tumblr media
13. Ghanche District, Gilgit–Baltistan
Gilgit-Baltistan’s Ghanche district stands almost aloof with its beautiful valleys and settlements inhabited by the most hospitable locals and river irrigated lands. The central location in the district is Khaplu, which is a beautiful landscape with high summits, flowing blue waters and waterfalls.
The people of this small settlement on the bank of River Shyok, are warm and loving, as they were centuries before.
Going a little ahead from Khaplu, the curvy road takes one to the delta of River Shyok, where it splits up, flowing through the gravel filled river plain. The peak of Mashabrum mountain can also be seen in the backdrop.
Tumblr media
14. Ranikot Fort
Ranikot, with a circumference of about 26 km, is the largest fort in the world. However, this has not been enough to convince the authorities to develop it as a major tourist attraction.
This fort is easily accessible from Karachi through the National Highway. After departing from Karachi, head to Dadu through on the Indus Highway. The road is in excellent condition. It’s an hour-long journey to San, the home of Sindhi nationalist, GM Syed. A little further from the town there comes a diversion. A rusty board announces that Ranikot is some 30 km away. Even though the road is in pathetic condition, the distance can be covered in 30 to 40 minutes.

16. Gorak Hill
Snowfall in Sindh — sounds more like fantasy but no, there’s one place in Sindh where it really snows in winter, to the extent that in 2008 the mountains got entirely covered with a layer of snow.
Gorakh is a scenic plateau situated at a height of over 5,688 feet and is part of the Kirthar Mountain Range that covers the entire Sindh’s border with Balochistan in the west.

Masherbrum Base Camp
Tumblr media
Duration 4 days Distance 31km Standard moderate Season Mid-June-September Start/Finish Hushe Zone and Permit restricted, US$50 permit Public Transport yes Summary One of the easiest and quickest treks to the base camp of a Karakoram giant, this trek has superb close-up views of Masherbrum.
A relatively easy trek leads straight towards the foot of mighty Masherbrum (7821m) with excellent views. This shirt trek into the heart of the Karakoram is recommended by itself or as acclimatization before tackling higher destinations in the Gondogoro Valley. The only glacier walking is a straightforward 30-minute section before base camp. An alternative route (see Alternative Days 4-6,), which is in a restricted zone, is useful when continuing up the Gondogoro Valley or on to K7 Base Camp.
PLANNING
Maps
The Swiss Foundation for Alpine Research 1:250,000 orographical map Karakoram (Sheet 2) covers the trek. No place names are marked except Dumsum, which is misplaced. The trail beyond Dumsum isn’t shows. The glacier shown descending from Cathedral Peak, locally called the Drenmo Glacier, doesn’t join the Masherbrum Glacier.
Stages
It’s stages total round trip from Hushe: (1) Parbisan; (2) Brumbrama; (3) Masherbrum Base Camp; (4-6) three stages to return via the same route. Alternatively, it’s eight stages total when looping back via Shaishcho. The five return stages starting from Mashabrum Base Camp are: (1) Brumbrama; (2) Darya Chowk; (3) Tir Sir; (4) Shaishcho; and (5) Hushe.
GETTING TO/FROM THE TREK
See Hushe (p).
THE TREK
Day 1 : Hushe to Parbisan
2-2½ hours, 6.9km, 425m ascent
Cross the Hushe River on either of two footbridges. The lower footbridge, directly west of the village, leads to a trail along the Hushe River’s true right (west) bank. It crosses the Honbrok stream and ascends through fields past stone huts used to store fodder. A rockier trail stays above the river’s east side. In 45 minutes, this trail crosses the higher footbridge and joins the trail along the west bank. Huts at Wesuk are 45 minutes farther. Cross the Aling River on a footbridge 30 minutes from Wesuk, with a shaded clear stream 10 minutes beyond near Dumsum summer village. Follow the stony river bed 45 minutes farther to Parbisan (3475m), a pretty willow grove with a clear spring at the base of a talus slope. Across the river from Parbisan, cliffs tower overhead. Just south of the cliffs is a small, steep side valley called Kyipotama. The name derives from an abandoned hunting practice. Since the steep walls offer no exit, in winter hunters used to send (tama) dogs (kyipo) to drive ibex into the valley where they proved easy game.
Day 2 : Parbisan to Brumbrama
2-2½ hours, 4.1km, 575m ascent
Head along the river’s true right bank 30 minutes towards the Masherbrum Glacier’s terminus. Cross a side stream from the west and switchback steeply 60m up a faint trail, marked by an occasional cairn in 15 to 30 minutes. At the top, follow a trail parallel to the lateral moraine 30 minutes, passing a baghath (a rock wall built to keep animals from crossing to the other side), to Pushuka (little river). Cross to its true left bank via a snow bridge through July, after which you hop rocks. This river is not so little, and parallels the lateral moraine up the Drenmo Nala. Climb gently, but steadily, 45 minutes to a rise on the lateral moraine, which is covered with flowers and shrubs and offers excellent views of the upper Masherbrum Glacier and Masherbrum itself. Descend gently 15 minutes to the basin called Brumbrama (4050m), which gets its name from brama, a ubiquitous shrub.  A stream runs through this flat, grassy, sometime marshy, ablation valley. Hushe herders use these pastures mid-July to mid-August. Otherwise, unattended male yaks roam the surrounding hillsides. The Drenmo (Bear) Glacier descends the side valley west of the grassy pastures of Brumbrama from Cathedral Peak.
On the glacier’s south margin where the river issues from its mouth is a large mound with scattered junipers called Drenmo Saspoon said to have been made by a very large bear.
Day 3 : Brumbrama to Masherbrum Base Camp
1½-2 hours, 4.5km, 230m ascent
Follow a trail up the ablation valley. Contour the hillside and cross the outwash stream from an upper ablation valley 15 minutes from Brumbrama. Climb Masherbrum Glacier’s lateral moraine on a good trail 10 minutes to huts at Chogospnag (big meadow). Continue up the ablation valley 15 minutes, contouring along the lateral moraine to another meadow. Climb the moraine of a side glacier, descend to the glacier covered with white rock and cross it in 30 minutes. Masherbrum Base Camp (4280m) is just beyond in a meadow with a small pool by the moraine.
Day 4 : Masherbrum Base Camp to Hushe
5-6 hours, 15.5km, 1230m descent
Return to Hushe via the same route.
Alternative Route : Masherbrum Base Camp to Hushe
This three-day restricted- zone-route is useful when contouring up the Gondogoro Valley or on to K7 Base Camp.
Alternative Day 4 : Masherbrum Base Camp to Darya Chowk
4 hours, 10.4km, 1080m descent
Descend along the Masherbrum Glacier’s west margin to Pushuka. Cross to the glacier’s east margin from just above Pushuka. Descend along the river’s true left bank to Darya Chowk, opposite the confluence of the Gondogoro and Aling rivers.
Alternative Day 5 : Darya Chowk to Shaishcho
6-7 hours, 5km, 130m ascent
Follow the Gondogoro River’s true right bank to pastures at Tir Sir. Cross the Gondogoro Glacier above its mouth (the river is too big to ford), and descend to Shaishcho (3330m).
Alternative Day 6 : Shaishcho to Hushe
4 hours, 9.3km, 280m descent
See Day 1 of the Gondogoro Valley trek, following it in reverse.
