Upgraded: A Review
Tumblr media
It has been almost 20 years since the debut of The Devil Wears Prada, and for that reason, the timing of Upgraded’s release is interesting. This movie definitely exists in the same vein as its counterpart, and I think it’s clever that this film capitalized on the similarities it shares with TDWP to reinvigorate interest in the genre. Camila Mendes is at times, a fun actress, and was the main selling point that ultimately convinced me to watch this movie, but…
Pros:
* Camila Mendes’ performance provides the main character with a well-developed personality. Instead of the usual wide-eyed innocent or fish-out-of-water archetype, the protagonist has a biting sense of humor, she’s down-on-her-luck, irresponsible, sassy, and even a bit vengeful
* It’s refreshing to finally see art history majors, and Irish folk, represented in film
* Ana and William (the film’s love interests) share decent chemistry
* The costume design is more grounded in reality than other films like it and most of the outfits are sophisticated while still looking achievable
* Marisa Tomei in anything is always a plus
* The film’s setting is extravagant and the cinematography in this movie perfectly captures what makes England such a tourist spot
Cons:
* Ana (the main character) is presented with very few obstacles that would make it difficult to achieve success in her career. She coincidentally makes connections with people who immediately elevate her position in life and there are few instances in which the protagonist earns what she has accomplished in the working world. Ana is also set up as a career-oriented woman, but once she meets Will, (the love interest), she becomes far too easily distracted by him and her character arc gives way to an underdeveloped romance
* Ana is characterized as a liar. Despite the level of dishonesty she demonstrates to her coworkers, each of them forgive her far too easily and she suffers no consequences for her actions
* Marisa Tomei is a great actress, but as a result of bad direction, her performance is not very strong. Her character, Claire DuPont, is described as terrifying and demanding to work for, but her actions and behaviors hardly support this characterization. Claire is the movie’s central antagonist and is supposed to serve as Upgraded’s version of Miranda Priestly. Unfortunately, Tomei’s portrayal of Claire DuPont is so much more “cushy” than Miranda Priestly that she does not give the movie a sense of conflict it so badly needs. Tomei is also forced to talk with a cartoonish French accent, which… ugh
* Two rival coworkers are introduced in this movie, but if they were removed from the script, nothing would change, and neither of them pose a real threat to the main character
Verdict: Upgraded is a film that tries and fails to create an upbeat narrative about achieving one’s dreams and finding success in a cutthroat industry. This movie had so much potential to become The Devil Wears Prada for a new generation, but there are many reasons Upgraded does not work on a fundamental level. I can appreciate its attempts to pay homage to a good chick flick, but despite the film’s great setup, its execution and payoff are disappointing. I can only lie in anxious wait for the next big-budget attempt to recapture the magic of one of the most iconic movies of the 2000s.

Mona Lisa Vito Is My Queen
CW/TW: surgery, operations
I mean, let’s be real: is there anyone more iconic? Every time I watch My Cousin Vinny and it gets to the part where Vinny calls her to the stand I get giddy. Every single time. I know it’s coming. It’s always the same. But it’s always so satisfying.
As you may have guessed, that was on last night’s watchlist. Dad and I tried to watch Poor Things, but that was just not working for us. A little too weird and a little too much sex for us to watch together. I do plan on finishing on my own, at some point. It was also weird for me after having been drilled into yesterday. I’ve got two more drains hanging from my body, and a Frankenstein-esque tale was maybe a little too on the nose. So we stopped partway through; Joe Pesci and Marisa Tomei came to the rescue.
So yeah, yesterday was a lot. The drains were unexpected, and are painful. And the news with them isn’t ideal. Despite being on basically constant antibiotics for the last 5 fucking weeks (yes, I’ve been in the hospital for 5 weeks. I’m starting to go stir crazy.) I’m still having pockets of inflammation and infection pop up. So now the doctors think that I’m going to have to have another, larger operation for an ileostomy. Not what I wanted to hear. Not sure how to tell dad. Not sure how to even deal with it myself. Then there’s my aunt in it all, who got into one of her pitbull modes (which I appreciate in her) over the fact that I’ve been here for so long and haven’t had nearly enough talk about the cancer in my body. She wants me to transfer to a different hospital. I did put in a request through a form she sent me. It makes sense to me that my doctors are saying with my active Crohn’s and infection that I can’t begin cancer treatment, but it also seems like this has just taken too long. I don’t know what I’m thinking or doing. Stay, transfer? I just don’t know. I’m out of my depth. It’s taking it out of dad too, I can tell. He’s trying really hard, but I know this is difficult for him. And mom. We’re all tired.
I guess today is hard too. I’m just coloring and letting my brain be mush. Dad should be here soon. What will we do? Idk. Probably watch something. There’s not much to do in the hospital. Had a nice FaceTime with the group earlier. I should be in Ocean City with my friends right now, but here I am in a hospital bed instead. The weather down there is even nice for March. I don’t know. I don’t believe that everything happens for a reason, but I feel it a little? Like I always end up where I’m supposed to be. Even though this certainly doesn’t feel like where I am supposed to be right now. And they’re moving my room to a different floor today. I won’t get to say bye to my favorite nurses and that makes me sad.
I don’t really have a point to all of this rambling. Just getting it out I suppose. Happy Saturday, I guess.

Tomei, Tudyk, Trejo, Swallow Among Additions to FAN EXPO Philadelphia In Next Wave of Celebrities
Tumblr media
Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei (My Cousin Vinny, The Wrestler) and fan favorites Alan Tudyk (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, “Firefly”), Danny Trejo (Machete, The Book of Boba Fett), Emily Swallow (“The Mandalorian,” “Supernatural”) and Jeff Ward (“One Piece,” “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”) are among the additions to the growing celebrity lineup at FAN EXPO Philadelphia, set for May 3-5 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. Joonas Suotamo (Star Wars) and Diana Lee Inosanto (“Ahsoka”) round out the newcomers to the roster.
Marisa Tomei blasted onto the scene with her Academy Award winning performance as “Mona Lisa Vito” opposite Joe Pesci in My Cousin Vinny. After the Best Supporting Actress win, she went on to roles in Chaplin, Untamed Heart and the Paper, later appearing on Broadway before earning two more Oscar nominations, the third for The Wrestler. She also had a recurring role in the hit series “Empire” and appeared as “Aunt May” in three Spider-Man blockbusters.
Alan Tudyk gained fans’ attention when he starred as wise-cracking "Hoban 'Wash' Washburne" in "Firefly" and Serenity, and later grabbed the “Star Wars” fandom with his portrayal of “K-2SO” in Rogue One. He also appeared in Wreck it Ralph and 42 and has lent his voice to characters in hits like “American Dad,” “Harley Quinn,” “Transformers: Earthspeak” and “Star vs. the Forces of Evil.”
Danny Trejo has developed a prolific career in the entertainment industry with a hard-earned and atypical road to success. From years of imprisonment to helping troubled youth battle drug addictions, from acting to producing, and now on to restaurant ventures, Trejo’s name, face, and achievements are well recognized in Hollywood and beyond. He has starred in dozens of films including Desperado, Heat, the From Dusk Till Dawn series, Con Air, Once Upon A Time In Mexico, the Spy Kids movies, Machete and many more.
With her portrayal of “The Armorer” in “The Mandalorian” in the hit Netflix series “The Mandalorian,” Emily Swallow added another role to her growing resume. She also appeared as “Kim Fischer,” a regular on “The Mentalist” and as “Amara / The Darkness” in the 11th season of “Supernatural.” She also voiced the role of “Lisa Tepes” in the animated Netflix fantasy action series “Castlevania.”
Jeff Ward played “Deke Shaw” as a regular on “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” from 2017-2020, and most recently appeared in the first season of the Netflix adventure/comedy “One Piece.” Fans will also recognize him from his work in “Brand New Cherry Flavor” and the TV movie Manson’s Lost Girls, where he gave an appropriately creepy performance as the cult leader.
Joonas Suotamo has assumed the mantle of the iconic role of “Chewbacca” in numerous iterations of the Star Wars saga since first appearing as the Wookiee in Episode VII – The Force Awakens in 2015. The Finnish actor also stepped out of the familiar character to appear in four episodes of the Disney series “Willow.”
Diana Lee Inosanto appears as “Morgan Elsbeth” in the Star Wars “Ahsoka” production on Disney+, opposite Rosario Dawson, David Tennant and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. She originated that role in an episode of “Mandalorian” in 2020 after appearing in dozens of movies and shows as a stunt person and a variety of other entertainment jobs.
They join a lineup that already includes headliners Mario Lopez (“Saved by the Bell,” “Access Hollywood”), Sean Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, “Gilmore Girls”), Felicia Day (“The Guild,” “Dragon Age: Redemption”), Ben McKenzie (“Gotham,” “The O.C.”), Holly Marie Combs (“Charmed,” “Picket Fences”), Adam Savage (“MythBusters,” “Unchained Reaction”), Michelle Hurd (“Star Trek: Picard,” “Law & Order: SVU”), Sofia Boutella (Rebel Moon, The Mummy) and Jason Lee (“My Name is Earl,” The Incredibles).
Single-Day Tickets, Three-Day Passes, Ultimate Fan and VIP Packages for FAN EXPO Philadelphia are available now. Advance pricing is available until April 18. More guest news will be released in the following weeks, including line-up reveals for additional headline celebrities, comic creator guests, voice actors and cosplayers.
Philadelphia is the eighth event on the 2024 FAN EXPO HQ calendar; the full schedule is available at fanexpohq.com/home/events/.
