Mapping Freire Marcus Balum 2014 21st and Market St Taken 6/1/2016
This mural is made up of more than 6,000 photographs. I couldn’t get into the parking lot to get a better picture, I was running short on time. Next time I’m in the area I’ll figure out a way to get some better pictures to show that this mural is a picture of many pictures... It’s really amazing.
The photographs in the mural, which are meant to depict how students and Philadelphians navigate the city, were taken by Freire students, students in a Mural Arts after-school program, Balum and the public, through the hashtag #mappingfreire.

Photoshop and the projection method help young artists isolate the greyscale in an image so they can visually break up color and value transitions and glean a better understanding of portrait painting. Posterized process.

This week we explored papel picado, a Mexican tradition of cut paper design. Students turned their papel picado into flags and had an opportunity to discuss color theory, symmetry, and assemblauge.

This week we explored geometric pattern designs, color wheels, and mixed media. Students had a chance to play with color relationships, compasses and rulers. Pictured above, teaching artist Karina Puente admires student work and shows our young artists how to combine charcoal, matte medium and paint. An homage to the current Philip Adams' charcoal murals? Maybe.

Our young people are proud of their work! This week, they continue to develop foundational drawing skills and continue their personal art and concept projects.
Two of our Freire students are participating in this Friday's Artrpreneures pop-up shop at Indy Hall. You're invited!

One of our students drew a playful architectural rendition of Mastery Lenfest's facade for our Youth Designed Mural process.
On Instagram we found http://instagram.com/1bite2xshy . Check her out for examples of hyper-realism, all things skull-and-eyeballs, and imagination.
Take a break with an ice breaker and a student favorite: The Human Knot.
And of course we couldn't share what we do without proper documentation. And our Freire students agree.

At Freire, young artist and future interior designer, Auria @perfectly_imperfectaj (artwork featured above) has been working on a design project using her new app, Home Design. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/home-design-3d/id413515229?mt=8
The app has helped her think about spatial relationships and color. Speaking of relationships, our new students are having a great time with returning students. #Danceparty.
