The tragic thing is in Apologies lore, Adeleine stops aging not long after this, so she's stuck with her brother's horrid haircut for all eternity...And THAT is the reason Noir is in hell! XD (1)

It is especially damning when you realize that the haircut she once resented is now a memento of her life with her brother and of the innocent and ignorant child she was then, shielded from the world and Noir's sacrifices, as well as his steady decline... He eventually made the decision to give up his doomed life for hers (did she ever ASK him to do that? to do ANY of that for her?) and she isn't even allowed to move on and "grow up", to use that life, because it's only a half life. It was an accident that the paintbrush preserved her, like a snapshot or a painting, in this form. And now when she looks in the mirror, she must always remember a time she will never be able go back to. Did Noir truly save her? Or did he save a "picture" of broken happiness? And for who? Whose "Adeleine" is she if her brother is dead and gone forever? Her new friends know her this way but they will never know HIM. Unable to build a fully new life and unable to escape her old. Does she resent him ever? How could she? After all he did for her? That would be horrible. She would be an awful person to think that. In comes the guilt because how could she be upset at HIM when he DIED for her? He died so she could be happy. So Be Happy, Adeleine. Look in the mirror and smile with that same ugly haircut. Smile like you did when you didn't know any better...

Your smile looks just like your brother's now.

"...Oh. So, THAT's how Noir always felt..."

At least, that's how dark this COULD go if I let Adeleine slide down the same depression spiral that Noir went down. ^^
