Een paar jaar geleden kocht ik bij een rommelzaakje in Nice een heerlijk protserig ovalen lijstje. Handgesneden en natuurlijk verguld. Daar móést een schilderijtje in: ‘Nissa la Bella’. Eigenlijk een soort zelfportret, die vrouw die vanuit zo’n echt Niçoise lijst vanaf een terras staat uit te kijken over ‘mijn Nice’. Het 19e eeuwse Nice. Week 2 - Artist Research

Artist 1: Alexander Calder

American sculptor Alexander Calder (1898―1976)  is one of the pioneers in kinetic art, which are work that plays with motion to explore possibilities of movement (Tate, n.d.)

The material used in Alexander’s work is mainly wood, metal, and wire, which often involved delicately balanced between shifting and stable parts. And the shifting element moves in response to either wind or a discrete motor, creating an interplay of form and space.

For this Stabile-Mobile work, the proportion of the stable parts dominates so it gives a sense of firm and limited movement.

Another work called ‘Man-Eater with Pennants’ uses the same material but have a larger proportion of the moving part to incorporate more movement. 

My overall impression of Alexander’s art is that he also incorporated physics not only to achieve literal balance but also to establish a relationship between his work and natural elements, particularly the wind 

Artist 2: Dennis Oppenheim 

Dennis is an American conceptual artist whose work in sculptural installation, and performance,... and he jumped between movements, materials, styles, and themes as he said ‘Signature style has been suspicious to me; it reads as a limitation’. (Oppenheim, 2011)

One particular style and material I am interested in is Dennis’s work with steel, metal and plastic to depict a flower with petals in various forms. The works ared constructed so visitors could walk between the “petals” wall (Oppenheim, 2018).

Also, the location contributes to the meaning of his work. For this ‘Light Chamber’ located at the entrance of the Denver Justice Center,  he explained the structure represents the mental processes exercised by the judges and juries within the center, where the complexities of decision-making are represented by the myriad metal pathways comprising each petal of the piece. (Light Chamber, 2010). 

One limitation I see in his works is that because of the requirement of stable and low-maintaining efforts, the use of steel and metal hasn’t added a flowy and softness to the element, and the colour of this material gives a sense of ‘under-construction’ instead of a complete work.

Enrica Borghi si è diplomata in Scultura all’Accademia di Brera, a Milano, nel 1989 e ha frequentato un PhD in Media Studies presso l'università di Plymouth (UK) in collaborazione con NABA di Milano. Insegna Materie plastiche presso il Liceo Artistico F.Casorati di Novara. Dal 2005 è fondatrice e presidente dell’Associazione Asilo Bianco, che opera sulle colline del Lago d'Orta e si occupa di valorizzazione del territorio attraverso l'arte contemporanea. Tra le sue mostre personali segnaliamo: Castello di Rivoli Museo di Arte Contemporanea, la Galleria d’Arte Moderna di Bologna, MAMAC di Nizza, Musée des Beaux-Arts di Bordeaux e l'Estorick Collection di Londra. Nel 2018 il Castello di Novara ha dedicato una retrospettiva alla ricerca svolta in questi 20 anni di lavoro dedicati ai materiali di scarto e alle tematiche del riciclo.
