I know Lassi ends up being a powerful wizard and everything, but I feel like when the "door to the heavens" asked for a display of power at the beginning of the game, she did a card trick.

at last heres a pic of the haul from Sundays game market visit!! it was a lot of fun if very overcrowded lol.
Tumblr media
wouldve probably bought more of the expensive stuff if i had more money atm but im very happy with the deals i got. stuff like Samba de Amigo, SEGA Superstars Tennis, Guitar Hero and M&S Olympics were all VERY cheap (like $5 or less). also not pictured is dead rising chop til you drop on wii which was also very cheap. I'm super super excited to finally own OutRun 2 on Xbox as well, its one of the few games I actually got to play for the first time in an arcade and I've dreamt of having an about-as-pretty version of it at home ever since. Coast2Coast wasnt doing it for me!!!
Tumblr media
Mario&Sonic at the Olympic Games in particular was extremely funny bc it has signs of Four different pricetags. the red one by Mario started at $45, and then it went to $10 before the $4 i bought it for. (idk where the 4th pricetag fits into this)
Tumblr media
ANYWAY the big catch here for me was
♡☆Magical Starsign☆♡
I've been looking for this game for a whiiile and I'm so glad I found it both in very good condition and for just a little over $20!!!! This is a beautiful pixelart JRPG by the devs who codeveloped Mother 3 along with artists from the Mana series on SNES/PS1. VERY excited to play this one hehe >:3
oh also the GBA game is a bootleg replica of Sims 2 Bustin Out. it was 3 dolar.

magical starsign turned me gay
No but forreals. This was the game i've replayed like three times as a kid, and only now, while replaying the thing again, i realise HOW slowly-yet-steadily it was tapping on my shell all that time. This game has literally everything and anything. Very mild spoliers incoming!
Ahem.
This guy. "Oh, so bloody beautiful! I wish i was like him, minus the guy thing i guess? It's not that bad, but like maybe some other option would be better" - 14 year old Aubery, not suspecting a thing yet. His hair is so beautiful. This moron casts a love spell on you - your love never comes true ;~;
Tumblr media
Who the fuck is this? Why the huge mask? Are you a disco fan? I like how despite everyone addressing you as "he" it is still in the air as to who the fuck are you forreals. Truly one of my nonbinary icons. My headcanon is that they're a "girl flavoured enby" (like me, wow!) who dresses a bit more masculine as to have the idiot ass pirates respect them as the leader
Tumblr media
This one predicts future if you ask her, and does a tiny little fuckin wink with a little pink heart particle after she's done talking. "She makes me feel like i'm into girls the way OTHER girls are into girls, strange!" - 16 year old Aubery, probably suspecting a thing or two at that point. Also, i mean... Catgirls by themselves are the easiest path to Gay.
Tumblr media
And i mean, damn, look, this one HAS A SWORD. And a huge, hot pink heart for a back shield, which is ALSO her flying saucer (don't ask). Can you see where this is going? A pretty lady with a sword, wearing absolutely insane boots? I refuse to believe the game designers were straight, like i refused to believe i am not, 10 years ago. I also swear to all deities that this was the initial trigger for my current wardrobe being 60% shades of pink.
Tumblr media
I could go on for an hour, but i should probably stop. However, an honourable mention: one of the hardest fuckin bosses in the game is a literal slime girl. With a terribly sad backstory btw, i cried, poor little slime girl.
Tumblr media
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BONUS BRAIN HACK: I am replaying this game right now, as a female character this time, as one should. I usually give random names to my characters, but this time i just called her with my name to trick my brain into recovering from stupid illness (i'm almost fine!) and loving myself more. "Gotta heal Aubery", "Oh no, need to guard Aubery now", "Heck, Aubery's done so well". Strangely, it works very well and i started recovering way quicker UwU
Second hand game stores are a gift, and second hand Nintendo DS are a roulette of absolute quality or a weird gimmick on a game card.
For €30, I got a weird little JRPG called Magical Starsign.
I like star particles. It’s cheaper. It’s from the second hand store that doesn’t wipe cards. I’m taking it.
I expected nothing of it. One of the reviews that stuck most out to me is that it’s a simple story with ugly art direction, but I’m entertained easily. Two hours in, and I’m enjoying it more than I expected. First, all the team members are standard named after drinks (and Sorbet). Second reason, this thing:
Tumblr media
Her name is Lassi and she’s a wind mage. She joins the party first on the planet where her magic deals the most damage, but is expected to fall off damage-wise quickly as she gains healing spells.
Now, some mechanics on the game to explain why this bunny made me laugh for 2 hours straight. This game works with Magic Points to cast spells. That ain’t unheard of. What is rarer is that they regenerate MP at the start of their turn. This is a percentage based on maximum MP. Lassi, at this point in the game, regenerates 14%. You think it ain’t much, but I say “Kleine Procentjes Rijke Ventjes.”
Because this is enough to make her basic spell free.
Razor Wind costs 9. I noticed that she regenerates 14.
And that power went straight to my head. This bunny casts for cheaper than free. She casts an AoE for not much damage, but it’s free damage. Plus, due to the way rows work in the game, she’s safe from nearly all damage. I have no reason not to cast Razor Wind. Together with the fact that Mokka has health for days and my light mage still hasn’t fallen off, I don’t need to use her crazy powerful 100% MP healing spell.
Summarized, the most important hit point is the last one and as long as no-one dies, free damage all the way
Happy anniversary Magical Starsign
This silly game about kids going space has done so much for me, from helping me improve my art to be something better to meeting the most wonderful and talented people in the discord server. I don't think I'll ever get over this game due it's impact that it has affected me from the moment I played this on my DS
Cheers to more years and maybe a sequel
Magical Vacation trivia - DLC
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the bygone era of the Nintendo DS, some games offered additional content by means of visiting stores - called Download Stations - and downloading said content wirelessly from special cartidges. Magical Starsign tried it out, too! From what our community has managed to uncover, there were at least 2 events in Magical Starsign that could be obtained at Japanese Download Stations via Tag Mode.
The first event was "Miss Madeleine's Letters" (マドレーヌ先生の手紙), a collection of ten heartfelt letters written by Miss Madeleine herself!
The second event was the "Justice Squadron" (正義戦隊), five figurines that turned into Super Sentai-looking enemies when used on Master Macadameus. These enemies were called red hero, blue hero, green hero, yellow hero, and brown hero.
Oddly enough, the five heroes had their names and bestiary entries translated, even though the MS Download Station events were never distributed internationally. Luckily, we've been able to obtain the heroes' figurines through cheats and get as much info on them as possible. As for Madeleine's letters, they weren't officially translated, so we did that ourselves!
It's Day 247 of the migraine that never ends, and any plans I had to clean or maybe (finally) finish the painting I have sketched out on my drawing table's surface are just not happening. I'm going to be lying in a pile of blankets playing one of the lower energy rpgs I have. I might even get some real writing done if I can trust my brain enough with any of my drafts.
But I realized I can probably trust my brain enough to rec some of my favorite rpgs for sick days like today. Something without a complex plot or a need to stay focused. Something with fun design and, if you're really lucky, big numbers.
Also some (one? two?) of these are on the 3ds. It's probably a good idea to look into them now since the shop is closing permanently towards the end of the month.
So here's my little list of suggestions. This definitely isn't just an attempt to get people playing things I like. It's also an attempt to get people to suggest their own preferences.
Dragon Ball Fusions (3DS): I know Fighterz is the crowning achievement of Dragon Ball games, but I don't like fighting games. Meanwhile this a fun little rpg where you can make your own OC and get other fighters to join you with one of the most enjoyable combat systems I've ever played. The fusion mechanic is also really goofy and a delight to mess around with.
Legend of Mana (PS1): Well, originally a PS1 game. I think the remaster is pretty much everywhere. It's always been my favorite Mana title, and I'm glad to see it getting attention now. Unlocking every quest is a pain that requires a guide, but the combat is very "no thoughts, head empty" and the game's backgrounds are some of the most beautiful I've ever seen. Also I haven't watched it yet, but there's an anime adaptation of one of the major arcs now. Story is a bit heavier than the others here though as it digs into "love can both nurture and destroy."
Fantasy Life (3DS): There's a second one coming, but if you don't want to wait the first one was a lot of fun. The class system in this game is a lot of fun, and I think it's the only game I've played that let me even run around trying to become a Master Cook. You can also have your friends jump into your game and run around together, but that might be restricted to local play now.
Pokemon: Heart Gold and Soul Silver (DS): Or any Pokemon title, really. Heart Gold is just my favorite, but I also thought the Sun/Moon titles were underrated. Pokemon's base line has never been complicated. It's just running around with little magical animal critters, and maybe if you're lucky you're playing one of the gens that lets you pet them. Or have them follow you around.
Magical Starsign (DS): Legend of Mana's younger sibling, and a great deal more linear. But it has a lot of the same visual charm paired with a setting both fantasy and sci-fi. Like Legend of Mana, it also gets a bit heavier with its story. Some of the subplots do not end on happy notes.
Okage: Shadow King (PS2): Maybe the least "head empty" of the bunch, but grinding is an option, and grinding is one of the most "head empty" things you can do in an rpg. I wanted to include it though because it's visually fun and has a wonderful little sense of humor. As a bonus, it's available for digital purchase on the sony store. A lot of these are old and only available in physical versions unless you put in the effort to find other, Totally Legal methods.
Sonic Chronicles: Dark Brotherhood (DS): Look, I'm going to be honest. I remember nothing about this game. I had the flu in college and fever-induced delirium wiped out my memory of the whole damn time. But apparently? I played this? And according the save file I completed it? Which means this has to fit the criteria of an rpg you don't have to think too hard about. Which it's a Sonic game, so I can't imagine the plot is complex.
Fable 3 (Xbox 360): I know it's the unfavorite Fable for people, but I had a lot of fun with it. It also looks like it's available digitally. This game doesn't demand much, and honestly it's pretty easy to sidestep the instance when it does try to make hefty demands. I don't know how accessible co-op is now, but this is a game made better when you're running around causing chaos with friends. It also let me marry a pink-haired cannibal, and how many games even have that option?
Come to think of it, wasn't there a magical wizard school RPG series called Magical Vacation and Magical Starsign on the DS?
Magical Vacation was on the GBA, and Magical Starsign was on the DS; just to clarify some stuff so it ain't confusing to others.
I don't know much about it, except that its magic system is Element-based, and can go beyond the traditional four.
And Brownie Brown worked on them, too? That's cool! They've worked on MOTHER3, my all-time favourite RPG!
