 she’s been soaking for so long the water’s no longer warm. lost in her own thoughts as maesena scrubs away the dried blood and dirt from her arms. blood moon’s were never easy but this one felt especially savage. a weariness in her bones remaining long after hircine’s hold on her mind dissipates. she has no memory of her time spent running freely or how far she’d truly traveled in her absence, somehow finding her way home in a daze that seemed more a fever dream than reality.

there’s blood still staining her lips, she can taste the unmistakable tang of iron — how many of them had she killed ? searching for relief no amount of blood shed would provide.

shifting she rests her head against the side of the tub as doting hands begin to lather her hair, eyes drifting shut in the process. she hasn’t properly mourned, she’d shut down instead, carving out both love and grief to spare herself the pain of further loss. if she didn’t care, she convinced herself, it wouldn’t hurt as much, but it did. where rage once dwelled guilt now took its place. she’d been selfish , as if she were the only one grieving , and she hates herself for it. 

as the heaviness in her chest grows she feels arms wrap tightly around her shoulders, holding her steady, an embrace that would support her no matter how her life spun out of her control. she is grateful for  —- @dovaeh for her kindness and unwavering understanding. for their family , they’d welcomed her back with open arms and without judgement, far more concerned with her well being than where she’d been.

( modern verse mostly ) love is so incredibly important to maesena and she loves intensely and easily, pouring her self and her care and heart into everything she can find beauty and worth in. and that is all owed to marcella. naturally, mae didn't have many people to love when she was growing up. she's an only child, her father passed when she was 2, most of her extended family lived far off or were entirely estranged, and she had few friends. all of her everything was given to marcella and she redirected her affection and love to other places, not wanting mae's only refuge to be her.

so she can find love and comfort in anything and everything: nature, animals, people, faith, life itself. it's because of her mom that she can find something to love in everything and why she can be so forgiving and lenient as a result - even to those who don't deserve it, and even to her detriment. that's the horrible mix of sheltered innocence, an intense need / desire to be loved and accepted, and feeling she's failing or hurting those she denies - she'll accept practically any treatment from the ones she loves.

like. in any verse, marcella is such an enormous factor in molding her into the woman she eventually becomes and is the fuel for her heart.. or just is her entire heart.

LOOK. lira is always her first thought. remember that nightmare thing i wrote out where she dreamed about alduin killing lira. literally her one of biggest fears BESIDES alduin himself. lira is her greatest source of strength when it comes to defeating alduin because it seems IMPOSSIBLE but she knows that she HAS to to keep lira ( and everyone lse obv ) safe and it fuels her x1000.

it hasn’t even been a full day and andrea’s already showing up at my door with drinks and pain

   listen ——  lira knows that mae’s ready when she says her goodbyes and watches her go off to fight the stinky angry lizard , mae’s learned everything she needs to know, she has a good head on her shoulders and she’s braver than she gives herself credit for but lira’s still an absolute wreck the entire time she’s away. you can’t tell me she didn’t hold her breath in anticipation from the moment mae walked out of jorrvaskr to the second she hears her walking up those steps again. she didn’t sleep. she lost weight because she wasn’t eating enough, worry kept her from having much an appetite. no amount of life experience can prepare you for what may as well be your own flesh and blood walking into the jaws of death. but she’s so damn proud of her for everything she’s accomplished, she always saw that capability within her, it’s why she pushed her as hard as she did to achieve her full potential. mae was destined for greatness and lira knew that from day one.

MAESENA   &   scars,    a summary.

BURN,    starting at her right shoulder and bleeding down her arm.    earned during the battle with mirmulnir    -    he managed to catch her with some of his fiery breath and,    while her flesh is immune to burns from dragon fire,    her armor melted almost immediately.    and she is not immune to molten steel.    it healed well enough because her skin reacts differently to burns,    but there is still a quite obvious scar down her arm.

CLAW MARKS,    down the length of her back from left shoulder to right hip.    being burned made her sloppy for the rest of the battle and resulted in this scar:    received as she drove her sword through mirmulnir’s eye socket.    he took one last swipe at her before throwing his head back and clawed through her armor and down her back.    this would have almost certainly killed her had she not absorbed his soul only moments later,    awakening her own soul and filling her with enough strength to last ‘til she could be taken to the temple of kynareth.    obviously maesena’s first encounter with a dragon wasn’t  perfect,    but it was heroic enough!

TWO STAB WOUNDS,    above her belly button and another closer to her pelvis.    made by the same unremarkable man,    the only reason these two stand out above her many slashes and stabs is that they have lasting effects on her body and future.    they were given while maesena was still green and largely untrained,    wanting only to prove herself.    she went on her own against better judgement and ran into a lone bandit              an easy enough target to test herself on.    obviously the man got the better of her and ended up stabbing her in her stomach,    pulling back,    and stabbing her again.    the positioning of these two has left her unable to bear children  safely    (    and quite miserable over that fact    ).
