Music - Casey's Updates [The Final(?) Version]
Casey's instagram stories recently contained some music they would have added to their playlists for the RWRB characters. This is the final version of all the ones they shared, with a playlist containing all of the songs and playlists for Henry & Alex.
-----
Here is the full playlist of all mentioned songs. In sharing the songs, Casey also shared snippets of the lyrics, these - & the full list of shared music - are below the cut.
I also created individual playlists from Casey's lists - all the songs mentioned for Henry:
and for Alex:
Below are text versions of Casey's instagram stories.
-----
some songs i would put on my AGCD playlist if i made it today
-Too Much, Carly Rae Jepson When I party, then I party too much When I feel it, then I feel it too much When I'm thinking, then I'm thinking too much When I'm drinking, then I'm drinking too much I'll do anything to get to the rush Now I'm dancing, and I'm dancing too much So be careful if you're wanting this touch 'Cause if I love you, then I love you too much
-Bronco, Orville Peck Come on in hot, babe Hurry up, babe Can't you see the gate from here? And nothing holds me back at all Nothing left to fear Best of luck, my dear Bucking side to side Bronco running wild
-Love Me More, Mitski Here's my hand There's the itch But I'm not supposed to scratch
-Big Time, Angel Olsen And I'm losing, I'm losing, I've left it behind Guess I had to be losing to get here on time And I'm living, I'm loving, I've loved long before And I'm loving you big time, I'm loving you more
-
and HGEJFMW (Henry's)
-Not Strong Enough, boygenius The way I am Not strong enough to be your man I lied, I am Just lowering your expectations Half a mind that keeps the other second-guessing Close my eyеs and count
-The Archer, Taylor Swift I wake in the night, I pace like a ghost The room is on fire, invisible smoke And all of my heroes die all alone Help me hold on to you
-Magic, Julia Jacklin I won't feel ashamed tonight Treat it like a stage tonight Turn over a new page and write Forget all that I learnt tonight All the times that I've been hurt tonight Remember what I'm worth and fight for it
-Reach Out, Sufjan Stevens & Angelo De Augustine Reach out, reach out To all the ones who came before you Ponder what is right You and I, in defiance

The National Henry: demons, humiliation, once upon a poolside, don't swallow the cap, empire line, the pull of you, bloodbuzz ohio Alex: racing like a pro, i am easy to find, this isn't helping, rylan, pink rabbits, you were a kindness, slow show
-----
top HGEJFMW lyrics on this playlist [Mitski]
-I want you I hold one card That I can't use But I want you
-I'm what's left of when we swam under the moon Now the rest of my days are just waiting for when You've calmed down and tell me, 'I was meant for you' Baby, being with you makes the flame burn good If you need to be mean, be mean to me I can take it and put it inside of me If your hands need to break more than trinkets in your room You can lean on my arm as you break my heart
-So please, hurry, leave me, I can't breathe Please don't say you love me
-I glow pink in the night in my room I've been blossoming alone over you And I hear my heart breaking tonight I hear my heart breaking tonight Ooh, do you hear it too? It's like a summer shower
a few top AGCD lyrics on this playlist [Mitski]
-And I am the fire, and I am the forest And I am a witness watching it I stand in a valley watching it And you are not there are all
-There's some kind of burning inside me It's kept me from falling apart And I'm sure that you've seen what it's done to my heart But it's kept me from falling apart Now here I lay as I wonder about you Would you just tell me what I'm meant to do? 'Cause I've waited and watered my heart 'til it grew You can see how it's blossomed for you
-I better ace that interview I better ace that interview I should tell them that I'm not afraid to die I better ace that interview
-I need something bigger than the sky Hold it in my arms and know it's mine Just how many stars will I need to hang around me To finally call it Heaven? I need somebody to remember my name After all that I can do for them is done I need someone to remember me

In our urban and suburban houses what should we do without cats? In our sitting or bedrooms, our libraries, in our kitchens and storerooms, our farms, barns, and dockyards, in our docks, our granaries, our ships, and our wharves, in our corn markets, meat markets, and other places too numerous to mention, how useful they are! In our ships, however, the rats oft set them at defiance; still they are of great service. How wonderfully patient is the cat when watching for rats or mice, awaiting their egress from their place of refuge or that which is their home! How well Shakespeare in Pericles, Act iii., describes this keen attention of the cat to its natural pursuit! A slight rustle, and the fugitive comes forth; a quick, sharp, resolute motion, and the cat has proved its usefulness. Let any one have a plague of rats and mice, as I once had, and let them be delivered therefrom by cats, as I was, and they will have a lasting and kind regard for them.

Porn purveyor Larry Flynt, who built Hustler magazine into an adult entertainment empire while championing First Amendment rights, died Wednesday.
He was 78.
Flynt had been in frail health and died of heart failure at his Hollywood Hills home, said his nephew, Jimmy Flynt Jr.
Advertisement Skip Ad From his beginnings as an Ohio strip club owner to his reign as founder of one of the most explicit adult-oriented magazines, Flynt constantly challenged the establishment and became a target for the religious right and feminist groups.
Flynt scored a surprising U.S. Supreme Court victory over the Rev.
Jerry Falwell, who had sued him for libel after a 1983 Hustler alcohol ad suggested Falwell had lost his virginity to his mother in an outhouse.

He owned a video production company, various websites, a Los Angeles-area casino and 10 Hustler boutiques.
He also licensed the Hustler name to independently owned strip clubs.
His publishing and financial successes were offset in equal measure by controversies and tragedies.
Advertisement 00:48 02:53 Shot by a sniper in 1978, Flynt was paralyzed from the waist down and used a wheelchair the rest of his life.
He fought battles with drug and alcohol addiction, and his fourth wife died of a heroin overdose.
His daughter, Lisa Flynt-Fugate, died in a 2014 car crash in Ohio at age 47.
With a fortune estimated at more than $100 million, Flynt spent his later years in the political arena.
When Gov.
Gray Davis was recalled by California voters in 2003, Flynt was among 135 candidates who ran to replace him.
He called himself “a smut peddler who cares” and gathered more than 15,000 votes.
A self-described progressive, Flynt was no fan of former President Donald Trump.
Before the 2016 election, he offered up to $1 million for video or audio recordings of Trump engaging in illegal or “sexually demeaning or derogatory” activity.
In 2017, Flynt offered a $10 million reward for evidence that would lead to Trump’s impeachment, and in 2019, Larry Flynt Publications sent a Christmas card to some Republican congressional members that showed Trump lying dead in a pool of blood, with the killer saying: “I just shot Donald Trump on Fifth Avenue and no one assassinated me” — a reference to Trump’s boast that he could commit such a killing and wouldn’t lose votes.
Flynt’s life was depicted in the acclaimed 1996 film “The People vs.

This frisky pop confection finds Blackpink teaming up with American singer Selena Gomez. The five girls use a series of ice cream double entendres to send out mating calls and detail how they are different from the other females. I know that my heart can be so cold But I'm sweet for you, come put me in a cone Blackpink and Gomez are encouraging the guys to ignore their icy cool demeanors. Once they take a couple of scoops they will find they are loving and affectionate.
The song's icy metaphors not only have a sensual connotation but also allude to the singers' wealth. Ice on my wrist, yeah, I like it like this Get the bag with the cream The girls are wearing diamond encrusted watches (ice is a slang word for diamonds). "Get the bag with the cream" refers to a bag loaded with cash.
The song is Blackpink's second hookup with a major American pop star in 2020, following their Lady Gaga collaboration, "Sour Candy." Both songs use sexy food analogies to represent the enticing love that the girls are ready to give out.
Frequent Blackpink collaborators, the Korean Teddy Park and the American Bekuh Boom, are the primary writers. Park wrote the main melody while Boom was in Korea. She then wrote the lyrics over his tune, incorporating a series of sexy ice cream-related play on words. The other credited writers are Ariana Grande, her go-to collaborators Victoria Monet, and Tommy Brown, Mr. Franks, Selena Gomez and the Korean producer 24.
The retro-tinged video finds Gomez driving a pink ice cream truck in a pinup sailor outfit. The four Blackpink girls all appear in a candy-coated frozen dessert fantasy land before ending the clip in an ice cream amusement park. Blackpink's scenes were filmed in South Korea, while the scenes featuring Gomez were shot in the US because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The song was birthed at a songwriting camp that producer Teddy Park asked Bekuh Boom to run for Blackpink's debut studio album. Boom asked Tommy Brown and Victoria Monét to come to the sessions at LA's Westlake Studio, and the pair brought Mr. Franks along with them. "Tommy had Franks pull up beats, and eventually Franks played the one that all of us started vibing to and decided to work on together," recalled Boom to Genius. "Victoria brought up the subject 'ice cream' and started humming melodies that we then started writing lyrics to together in the room. From that point on we had a great back and forth of ideas for the first half of the song that was done that night."

Come suonano?

If you’ve ever skimmed my lil’ blog here, it’s probably not a surprise that my formative musical-creating years were during the rise of the so-dubbed Generation X era. And while I was first weened in the waning days of Brit synth-pop and hardcore’s initial thrust, my own band drove the van through the days of “alternative rock.”
That term of course was laughable, as most of what was called that was simply, you know, rock. Guitars, bass, drums, vocals. And lame rock, at that. And by the time people like my mom would have some concept of what that term meant, “alternative rock” -- like, say, Gin Blossoms or Deep Blue Something -- were cleaner and more approachable than even Poison from just a few years earlier. Nothing alternative about it. No more edgy than Bread or Ambrosia from the AM Gold days.
But I know a genre topper when I hear it.
Howlin’ Maggie leader, Happy Chichester, started out as the excellent and funny bassist for Royal Crescent Mob, Columbus’ early entry into the post-Red Hot Chili Peppers white-boy funk rock sweeps of the latter ‘80s. The gateway drug local band for many an Ohio State Student, they were a few notches above that quickly cheesed-out genre. They put on a great show, landed on some good labels, garnered a good regional following, and basically were all super nice dudes. I remember Craig Regala -- major domo of Columbus early entry into the ‘90s underground garage punk 7″ label sweeps, Datapanik Records -- told me very early on that I was the best frontman Columbus had produced, after Royal Crescent Mob’s David Ellison. Today, one would wonder how either band existed in the same scene, but that was what was so great about that fleeting, still mostly undocumented era, when sputtering hardcore flailed around looking for and spewing out ideas of what the hell is next...
youtube
Once RC Mob (as we called them) flamed out, Chichester eventually started his own band, Howlin’ Maggie. They took a soft right onto RC Mob’s popiest roads, while retaining enough funk to turn them into a successful regional act. The campus, hacky sack-playing, funk rock thing really paid the bills circa 1993-98. And while it goes without saying that shit is most definitely NOT my thing, Howlin’ Maggie leaned more pop and put on a fun show.
They landed on Columbia Records in 1996 for their solid debut album, Honeysuckle Strange; played on Letterman, got on some big festivals, and the ever-nice Chichester utilized his considerable talents and connections to land some great opening slots, while becoming a go-to session player. The guy can make his way around just about any instrument and hit loads of notes with his malleable vox.
Which also explains why Holwin’ Maggie didn’t release another album until the indie release, Hyde (PopFlu Music) in 2002, where “Love Is All Around Us” comes from. Chichester was busy as heck playing on others’ albums and tours (not the least of which as a jack-of-all instruments for Afghan Whigs), while fitting in working tours with Howlin’ Maggie -- who remained popular in Columbus. I’m guessing he was holding out hope too, that the increasingly dwindling dollars of the alt-rock heydays would offer a few crumbs for another major label advance. That green door slammed shut around 1998.
So by the time the Hyde CD slid across the editorial desk at Columbus Alive for me to review that year, it could not help but feel late to the party. Fact is, the album is a solid slice of alternative rock that, on day of release, was an instant shouldabeen, or really couldabeen had it been 1996 instead of 2002. In songwriting, performance, and production, it’s more satisfying than all the Semisonics and Third Eye Blinds in the SPIN orbit. And yes, I realize that might sound like very, very faint praise. But when the earmarks of “alternative rock” were hit energetically well -- think mid-period R.E.M., Sugar, hell, even that one New Radicals album -- candy-coated and earnestly scrubbed grunge-pop was an appealing pop moment.
And “Love Is All Around Us” might’ve been an apex. It’s all there: the gleaming jangle riff, loud/quiet dynamics, the hopeful lyrics, and an instantly singalong-able chorus (with handclaps even!). But as it builds, it’s the song’s second half that does a few octave jumps, and adds incrementally louder and busier smiling and screaming backup vocals that draw from the Husker Du well of Midwest desperation-turned-defiance. Then a repeated ringing one-chord that carries the song far up into a 1990s sun, full of a charming President, AIDS activism, Top 10 bands dropping ‘70s punk acts in interviews, hip hop in it’s creative flowering, the record industry tossing advances to small bands, and Claire Danes as a sex symbol. As Chichester sings in here, “Anything is possible.” Or was. With this very 1996 song coming out after 9/11, well, all the joy that Happy Chichester could convey with his miles-wide smile couldn’t beat that.
I’m guessing the album sold okay, and gave another slab for Howlin’ Maggie to sell on the road, as they started up a bit again around that time. Chichester has since continued on as a solo act, some Howlin’ Maggie action, and in-demand musician, all while battling Bell’s Palsy since 2012.
Whenever it strikes me to dial this song up on YouTube, it has a way of transporting me to High Street in 1996 -- the same thought when I first heard it in 2002 -- that carries a nostalgia and a twinge of missed chances, but good times nonetheless, that all great pop can quell.
I’ve returned to such songs of late (below) for personal reasons, songs that ring with a life-affirming uplift, but can’t and probably shouldn’t, completely hide the sad center that fuels great pop songs, always reaching for another sunrise.

What is your middle name? -- You know, about a year ago in a D&D session, I was attempting to sass the big bad (I’m much better at sass when I have time to think about it, D&D is such a time pressure that I’ve wound up playing much more of a strong silent type than I intended), and I said “Defiance is my middle name” and the DM wound up making Defiance the name of the country my character is from. Which is a delightful sort of NYC/Vegas mashup, quite different from Defiance, Ohio. ^_^ Also the capital city is called Skreuyu (pronounced, of course, Screw-you). :D
What are you passionate about? -- Dear god. What aren’t I passionate about? O_O I could attempt a brief and incomplete list, but this is a long meme anyway. ;-) Besides, you’re here, you’ll hear about it all sooner or later. XD
Zebra or leopard print? -- Either one, but only if it’s in day-glo neon rainbow colors. And not to wear, particularly. Fake-fur blankets and pillows, mostly. Lisa Frank was... a formative influence. ^_^ If I ever have money to actually decorate a place of my own, it’s gonna look very much like Wes Janson decorated it, although possibly with fewer Ewoks. (I do have a BB-8 penny bank, though.)
Do you have any fears? -- Honestly, at this exact moment, I’m too damn sleep-deprived to know. XD When I’m awake it’s probably social anxiety stuff. When I wake up at 4am tomorrow in my car, I may or may not be having the kind of weird quasi-psychotic fears that come with a certain level of sleep deprivation, where I’m suddenly convinced my laptop is going to eat me. Right now, nothing especially comes to mind.
Silver or gold? -- To wear? Gold. My skin corrodes silver. But as a color, I like silver better.
Top three places to visit? -- Ooh. Um. That I’ve been to, or not? I want to go back to Washington DC, and someday I want to be extremely sane and go back to Indiana, and someday I’d like to go back to the Black Hills and see all the geology tourism things, because the only one I saw as a kid was Mount Rushmore, which is more of a colonialism tourism thing. That I’ve not been to... Scotland, maybe? And Hawaii and Yellowstone, again for the geology nerdery? I feel like there are places I’ve very specifically wanted to go someday that I’m blanking on.
Where are you from? -- Indiana, once upon a time. Love the place, cannot deal with the people. Miss the snow. And the autumn leaves. And the library.
First career you wanted as a child? -- Paleontologist, best I can remember. Some things stay pretty constant. I don’t have the physical health to be a geologist anymore, if I ever did, but damn, I still want to take some more classes or keep up with the field somehow.
What’s your sign? -- You know, I’m not being bothered with this at the moment. I’m sure it’ll come up in a reblog pretty soon, I do those memes a lot.
Future names of your children? -- I refuse to have any. Five generations my bio-family has fucked up, all by trying too damn hard not to be their mothers. I will be a weird adopted relative and not name anybody anything.
What are you listening to right now? -- A fifteen-minute instrumental cover of “Turkey in the Straw”, to block out the myriad noises of the fast food place so I can think words. I’ve been looping it for hours and I’ll presumably be looping it for hours more.
Do you believe in fate/destiny? -- I have a lot of weird conflicting opinions about things like fate and destiny. I think if the universe is being... directed, by a god or fate or destiny or anything with intelligence or purpose, it’s an asshole and ought to be punched. It’s not actually any less depressing if the universe is being run by random chance and just happens to shake out in ways that make it seem like it’s being run by an asshole, but it’s less angering. *tries to word* I do get the feeling, the... desire for shit to have a purpose and to make sense, but a big part of me thinks that’s pareidolia or something related. It’d be nice if all this bullshit was eventually gonna shake out to me being either a stable human being or an epic hero, but I strongly doubt it. (And even if it did, a smart enough god should be able to get me there with less suffering, if it wanted to. So at minimum, if there’s a fate or god or destiny directing me, it’s either sort of incompetent, or motivated by priorities like taking the most direct route rather than minimizing the chances for me to die along the way, or it’s kind of a sadist. Sorry, I have Feelings about this one.)
Ethan, however, has a take that I think is... relevant, to the state of the world at the moment. He thinks the specifics of the world at any given time are all determined by chaos and random motion, but that there’s a cosmic balance between... stuff that’s very hard to give names to. “Good and evil” is part of it. “Order and entropy” might be a little closer. “Light and darkness”, whatever. But there’s this cosmic balance, and if, say, the Forces of Evil or whatever you want to call them... if something pushes too hard in one direction, tries to make one side win, the universe is gonna bounce back. There’s always gonna be that push-pull. Lots of people can get hurt or killed in the process, but because Ethan and I both read LOTR at formative ages, where we wind up at is the line “They cannot conquer forever”. You can’t have... you can’t get stuck. This is probably terribly Manichaean or something of us, but right now that’s the best I can word. That there’s always gonna be the thing you are Against, but there’s also always gonna be the thing you are For, even if one of them gets pretty squished for a while.
What are your career goals? -- Sometimes what you want to be when you grow up is “paid”. ;P I’d like to reach a point where I never have to ask the internet for money again, while continuing to be alive, and maybe can even give other people money. Help support my friends, travel around doing meetups, go to conventions or whatever, maybe do some cosplay. What exact job I’d be doing, Chaos only knows.
What is your favorite color? -- Blue. Royal blue, midnight blue, cobalt blue. Often with stars on.
What is your favorite flower? -- Uh. I’m gonna say these little striped white and purple crocuses that would come up through the snow in the spring? I loved those.
What was the first concert/show you attended? -- The Monkees 45th anniversary reunion concert. I said at the time that I’d blown five years of luck on the improbable string of coincidences that led to me getting there, but I’m so damn glad it happened, because I enjoyed it immensely, and Davy Jones died before what would have been their 50th. And hey, that was 2011, maybe I’m accumulating some luck again. ;-)
Something you are working on right now? -- This meme? XD In more general terms, reblobbenating some really old posts from my previous blog, as well as filling up my queue from same. It’s pretty slow going.
Have you ever had a near-death experience? -- Not the sort where you see a tunnel of light or go out of your body. Just the kind where you nearly die. :P
Are you a procrastinator or do you get things done early? -- Pfffft. Time management is something that happens to other people. ;P Occasionally I do get something done right away, but mostly it’s the night before deadline, or sometimes the night after. o_O Maybe when I have some spoons I’ll be better at that.
Left or right handed? -- Right. Very much so. My left hand is clumsy enough that I never did really get the hang of playing the piano with both hands, and I still struggle with video games that aren’t Mass Effect. (I’m good at Mass Effect because I’ve been playing it for something like five years at this point. ^_^)
TV Shows and anime you watch regularly -- Hah. I don’t watch anything regularly. I don’t even read books regularly, I go through phases where I don’t read a book for months and then suddenly I’m reading ten in a day. And I don’t do open canons, anyway; they interact badly with my particular anxieties and stress levels.
Halloween costume idea for this year? -- I generally default to a cowboy or a pirate. I also have a witch hat now. But I might come up with something else. Living in an apartment complex, though, there will be no trick-or-treaters, so unless I wind up working somewhere that does Halloween costumes, the point is rather moot.
What is your relationship status? -- Single, aromantic, have never dated anyone, would rather like a primary relationship at some point but that’s an issue for when I can support myself. :P
Last movie you just watched? -- I genuinely don’t know. Probably Black Panther? No, that was like February. Hot Fuzz?
A song that’s been stuck in your head? -- This very seldom happens to me. I think the last one was Janice Buckner’s “Strange Friends”, a little-known ‘80s children’s song, of which I can remember neither the tune nor the lyrics. Usually I can at least remember the lyrics even if I don’t know what tune they went to.
A book you want to read/have recently read? -- Erm. I just reread Aaron Allston’s X-wing books, if you can call it rereading when I was mostly skimming looking for good tumblr URLs (I found a lot, but none that felt like me). I’m not really in a reading phase at the moment, so.

Atlas At Last by louisandthealien [@louisandthealien] (83k) Harry/Louis, 1970s AU, road trip, ot5 friendship, strangers to friends to lovers
He doesn’t know what he had been expecting out of the road trip itself besides burping contests and too much shitty gas station food with Oli and Stan, but in the brief moment before Harry ambles up his driveway, Louis idly wonders if this is about to become some sort of Gay Coming of Age story.
Maine to California in ten days. In which Zayn’s an open-shirt hippie they meet somewhere in Ohio, Liam’s the pastor’s son running away from home, and Niall’s the number they call on the bathroom wall.
It’s 1978. Harry and Louis are just trying to get to San Fran in time for the Queen concert.

Be Still by thisonegoes [@this-onegoes] (150k) Zayn/Harry, murder mystery, detective AU, hurt/comfort
Zayn hears the telltale sound of stretcher wheels bouncing up over a weather strip. A tech backs out of the door first, as both Zayn and Harry turn to watch. They wheel the black body bag out and lift it down the stairs, to take her away. She's officially cleared for transport, no longer a resident of the household. She's now just a corpse wrapped in plastic.
When they finally turn back to one another, Harry blinks and then shatters into pieces.
Detective Zayn AU.

Black with Autumn Rain by whimsicule [@whimsicule] (93k) Harry/Louis, magical realism, thriller
“Thank you,” Geoff says, taking a sip of his tea. “What did you tell him?”
Louis has a sip as well, lets the tea burn down his throat too quickly, too hot, and he feels it all the way down to his stomach. “The truth. Essentially,” he replies after a moment, licking his lips, relishing the slightly bitter taste of the brew that’s never quite strong enough for Louis’ liking. At least it’s not decaf. “That my dog scented it. That I didn’t touch the body. That I came here first thing.”
Geoff nods pensively. “Did he believe you?”
“Probably not. There’s only so many people who can drown on dry land before it gets fishy.”
or: Harry is a journalist, Louis has lots of secrets and the moors aren't exactly the ideal place to rekindle a lost romance.

Cold Little Heart by seducedbycurls [@seduced-by-curls] (194k) Harry/Louis, alpha/beta/omega dynamics, werewolves, hurt/comfort
Louis is a soft omega with an abusive past and an alpha child.
A few months after getting a divorce, Louis meets Harry, an ex-military alpha wolf that offers him something -odd.
In exchange for teaching him how to cook, Harry will babysit his son, Abraham.
Louis really could use the help.

Deuxsphere by sweetlullabies (156k) Harry/Louis, college/university AU, soulmates/soulmate-identifying marks AU, enemies to friends to lovers
The way the vines of the rose curled around the sharp straightness of the dagger was an image that was going to be forever embedded into his mind. The longer Harry craned his neck to look at it in the mirror, the more he realized—it was fucking creepy. He couldn’t for the life of him figure out why it was there, or why humans decided to make it mean something.
Harry's first year at uni is guaranteed to be a breeze as long as he stays focused, steers clear of flying footballs, and completely avoids boys who are in bands.

Tumblr media
Emperor’s New Clothes by sunsetmog [@magicalrocketships] (92k) Harry/Louis, famous/nonfamous AU, exes to lovers, secret relationship
The fact that Louis’s most precious belonging was a cat with a face like thunder and an uncanny ability to cover every single inch of Louis’s clothing with cat hair was something that Louis chose not to think about too much.
or: Harry’s a pop star and Louis isn’t, and there’s a non-disclosure agreement where there used to be a relationship.

Homegrown by casuallyhl [@casuallyhl] (51k) Harry/Louis, gardens & gardening, strangers to friends to lovers
“It wasn’t an easy decision, if I’m honest,” Harry admits, shoulders sagging in on himself. “Moving is really difficult. My whole life was in Manchester. But Manchester didn’t want me. Leeds did.”
“Well, Leeds is happy to have you,” Louis says, giving Harry a kind smile.
Harry brightens a bit at that, undeniably pleased. “Yeah?”
“Yeah,” Louis replies, expression soft and lips curved.
Or, a gardening AU where Harry is new to town and the newest volunteer at the local gardening club, Louis is the attractive grandson of one of the members, and the nosy volunteers hatch a plan to get them together.

It Comes and Goes in Waves/It Always Does by roaroftheninth [@almost-a-class-act] (50k) Harry/Louis, World War II AU, post-war AU
“He says that he’s grateful for that ending, because he always wanted to imagine it like that and you were always a better storyteller than he was. But that’s not the ending that should be published, because it’s not the truth.”
Summary: It is 1953; Louis makes that nine years since they won the war (eight if you count the Americans, which he never does). His first novel, a best-seller set during wartime, is due for a sequel - but Louis doesn't want to face the ending.

Life Was a Song, You Came Along by rainbowninja167 [@rainbowninja] (37k) Harry/Louis, Singin’ in the Rain AU, famous/nonfamous AU
It's embarrassing how long it takes Louis to recognize his own song. Niall had sung it as a bright, hopeful love song, and that’s honestly how Louis had always assumed it should sound. But this new voice, slow and rough, stripped of any backing instrument, has infused the lyrics with just the tumultuous mix of fear and defiance that Louis can remember so clearly from the night he wrote them. It’s not a comfortable thing, to feel like someone is singing all your secrets back to you.
Louis is a songwriter trapped in a lie that could ruin his best friend's career. Harry owns a record store, distrusts everyone in the music industry on principle, but loves Niall Horan's newest album. A modern retelling of Singin' in the Rain.

Like an Endless Summer by objectlesson (87k) Harry/Louis, summer camp AU, friends to lovers
“You just wanna go fawn over Styles as soon as possible,” Zayn grumbles.
“I do not. Plus, he probably got ugly this year. Eighteen is an awkward time...I bet he’s got acne and one of those terrible fuckboy haircuts all the hipsters are getting these days, with the shaved sides? Just watch, the first year we’re gonna get any time together is gonna be the first year I don’t have a stupid crush on him.”
---
Or, Louis is a riding instructor at a summer camp, and Harry is a fellow counselor who he’s been successfully managing his crush on for the last two summers. That is, until Harry shows up this year leveled up and lethal, and all Louis’s formerly perfected veneer of nonchalance melts like a popsicle in the sun.

Four years later, just as Harry is set to embark on his next world tour, a drunken confession causes a rift between once inseparable friends. ap top 25 list: 2k17, a month late
The AP “Audio Popularity” Poll was Ben’s way to get us all to make a list and talk about our favorite songs of the month, back when we were all living in the same house. He describes it here. I have since cut back to doing it every year, with the ever shifting goal of defining “audio popularity” and “favorite” and “best”.
This year’s list, 5 years after Ben’s death, my main goal is to identify 25 awesome tracks that I’d love to talk to Ben about. They are my favorite 25 songs of the year, a focus on new discoveries (tho a few songs from last year’s list show up), songs that I surely would’ve dubbed for Ben back in the day.
25. the rats: the rats’ revenge
60’s punk rager - an era we did not ever go deep into, but now it’s time to eat up those Back from the Grave comps.
24. fluf: stuffed animal
Not their typical noise-grunge, which Ben yeah loved (he lived Sub Pop inexplicably into the 2010s), but a Sebadoh-esque minimal gem.
23. LNZ: blondehairdown
The most quoted song of 2k17 for me. Ben was always into weird local rappers no matter where he was. Sharing this internet-destroying monstrosity with him would be a conversation for thee ages!
22. new kingdom: terror mad visionary
tom waits as MC sounds like a thing ben would love or hate (he rejected lots of undie rappers for their not slamming hard enough) but this stuff is so pirate-vocalled that i’d love to have asked him what was going on here.
21. octa#grape: dirigibles
The most soul-junk of galaxalag’s new group, spinning all sortsa weird beats into their calm noise.
20. wovenhand: golden blossom
16 hp was a shared favorite, and i’d love to go thru these new DEE albums with ben.
19. slim cessna’s auto club: commandment 3
Seeing these guys live was a total revival that was up Ben’s alley. Dwight Pentecost  and his doubleneck guitar with hologram switching from Sacred Heart to Marian Immaculate Heart. Munly looking like a straight up ghoul man, gathering us into a circle, and chiding me for screaming the lyrics too loud. Slim just hamming it up preacher style. Rebecca wielding all sortsa kitchen sinks and keeping it together. They encored to “Commandment 3” in a karaoke choreograph line dance. One of the few shows I’ve seen that really produced a spectacle within a minimalist framework.
18. kleenex girl wonder: dont wait up
An alternative bee-thousand.
17. puff pieces: competition
The local DC stuff always seems to be ahead of the rest.
16. arroyo deathmatch: swimming the witch
They acoustic thrash their folk without guitars and just uke! This one sprays rap tropes and references all over the Crassy gender politics. Joyous bleakness!
15. the out_circuit: come out shooting
A wonderful sequel to our favorite Frodus “Year of the Hex.”
14. ramshackle glory: punk is the worst form of music, except for all the others
Anarcho politics and emotions, what drew me into punk.
13. a fistful of dynamite: smoke it, like a cigarette
More acoustic thrash folk with an even worse vocalist. “Write my own favorite songs/ write my own singalongs...you think this is bad? Well it just gets more rough!”. The world’s worst snare sound. Charmed!
12. shellac: riding bikes
He was an albini fan, and we would definitely have spent time jamming his new ones. And what an epic this one is.
11. bradley hathaway: the world is screaming
I could see ben finding it utterly pretentious, but bradley straddles that line of being so serious but also so reckless, so honest and so charming to me. His new album is the best, riotous blasphemy as prayer, but this one does the post rock building ben taught me to dig.
10. lou barlow: try 2 b
Our indie legend put out a great one (years olde already?), oh well, it slams lo-fi.
9. the beakers: 4 steps towards a cultural revolution
Ben downplays a lot of thee weird punk, but weird punk from his beloved Seattle scene? He’d dig! This out Ubus David Thomas. Ultra.
8. ps eliot: the cyborg
Reminds me of so much of the stuff on the ktru tapes, but this struck me very hard this year.
7. lifter puller: mission viejo
Most of their weird stuff has more to discuss, i guess, with the spoken stories and nonsense arrangements, but this is just an indie rock emotion block of thee highest order.
6. defiance, ohio: calling old friends
A classic campfire singalong.
5. henry thomas: when the train comes along
Not Thomas’ most canonical or comp’d performance, but such a stomper. Ben got me into old timey music and the last cd’s he ripped from me were the pseudo-old-timey boxset from Fonotone.
4. ballydowse: sails
An albini-produced christian-anarcho celtic folk/punk group relying prominently on tuvan throat singing. And yet it took me til 2k17 to find it. Ben used to be after a Crashdog CD at Family Bookstore, but this stuff would’ve taken it to a whole nother level. The best band you don’t know!
3. snail mail: static buzz
Woulda been a ktru darling. Local bmore rock girl makes it big - new album gonna be on Matadork.
2. mike knott: double
We always ignored the mike knott stuff, but this year has been all about rediscovering the blonde vinyl roster, and that dip goes deep. This song is an undeniable one, whether live at Cornerstone or with the *gasp* secular Aunty Bettys playing it.
1. showbread: matthias replaces judas
This raw rock was the first new rekkerd i listened to after we found out ben had died, but a song that has only emerged more recently as a post-Pedro emotional cleansing monster. Ben loved “Every New Day” with the Reese Roper vocals, he’d love this too. & it’s the best song ever, so he’d better...
honorable mentions:
Blackbird Raum - Last Legs // Acoustic thrash folk! He’d be thrilled to see Wacko-Hed’s genre is alive n’ well...
Double Dagger - The Lie / The Truth // Righteous at the drive-ining.
City of Caterpillar - A Little Change Could Go a Long Ways // One of the bands that indoctrinated me into punk rock seeing them live - i put off listening to their cd until recently. Ben would talk about how NoU did it better, I’m sure!
William Elliot Whitmore - cold and dead // Ugly blues voice on this Americana death tinged guy.
Pogues - If I Should Fall From Grace of God / Fairytale of New York // We never talked about the Pogues. They hit most of the sweetspots for me emotionally and aesthetically. Ben loved Cordelia’s Dad, and this is their Dad.
Model Engine - Reeperbahn // Ah a CCM classic - I knew we had to listen to Black Eyed Sceva, but unsure how much play this one ever got in the CCM era.
Lift to Experience - to guard and to guide // They post rocked the map to Texas. I remember expecting to find this in the used CD store when I visited Ben at Rice. Now it’s been reissued and is weirder packaged and sounding than ever - really woulda liked to listen to this with him.
Flesh Eaters - Pray till You Sweat // Richard Hell in Violent Femmes skin godsend
EZT - Central Control // Some sorta Neil Young smog. Who knows.
close:
mike knott - rocket and a bomb; one way streets - we all love peanut butter; 3 mile pilot - house is loss; i hate myself - urban barbie, keep reaching for those stars; fistful of dynamite - tribute to castellana; arroyo deathmatch - as an instrument, all the best matadors are fascists, casting into the void; azealia banks - 212; lifter puller - star wars hips, plymouth rock, math is money, 4dix; ramshackle glory - face the void, eulogy for an adolescence shattered against elliot st. pavement; kleenex girl wonder - tendency right foot forward, the sound of paul, why i write such good songs; new kingdom - kicking like bruce lee; slim cessna - commandment 7, hold my head, he roger williams; aunt bettys - speeder mode; shellac - dude incredible; snail mail - thinning; 2 whole Fountainsun and Aesop Rock lps...

Every album and song referenced in every book by Hanif Abdurraqib
I decided to put together this list after finishing Hanif’s latest full-length book, They Can’t Kill Us Until They Kill Us: Essays. For those not familiar with Hanif, he’s a poet and essayist who really loves to talk about music. He writes a lot about hip hop, punk, and emo, but I also once texted him out of the blue to ask his opinion of the largely forgotten 90′s boy band O-Town and he had a number of clearly well-thought-out observations ready to go immediately. He writes about music in ways that are simultaneously about other very big things in his life and the society and communities that shaped it. It’s something I deeply appreciate, as a person for whom narrative storytelling is often the only way for me to express the things I’m thinking and feeling, for which simpler words just won’t cut it. His books are about fear, or heartbreak, or gentrification, or religion, or death and mourning, or hope, but they’re also pretty much all about music.
With that in mind, I decided to make it my 2018 New Year’s Resolution to listen to every album and song referenced in his books, and since I had to make this list anyway, I figure I’ll share it in case anyone else wants to do the same, or just wants an exhaustive list of Hanif’s music references for some other reason.
For clarity’s sake, this list includes songs and albums, but not instances where musical artists are named without reference to any of their actual material. I’ve omitted names of individual songs in cases where the albums they appear on are referenced in the same poem or essay. I’ve also tried to include indirect references that rely on context cues without identifying actual titles or song lyrics, though I’m sure I’ve missed some.
Of course, if any of this sounds at all interesting, I’d recommend buying the books themselves. The chapbooks are quite hard to find, unfortunately. Vintage Sadness famously sold out in pre-sale, even after the publisher more than doubled the print run due to overwhelming demand, and if there are any copies of Three Crosses or To Ex-Girlfriends to be had anywhere besides my bookshelf, I sure as hell can’t find them. However, both of the full-length books, The Crown Ain’t Worth Much and They Can’t Kill Us Until They Kill Us are still very much available.

Spotify Link//Youtube Link
Lyrics under readmore (along with warnings for bolded songs)
I’m Bo Yo - (Explicit, mentions of Menstruation, g*psie slur)
'Cause I'm Bo, yo, And I'm the greatest rapper ever, And I'll weather your weather whether you think I'm clever or not, Think you're better, you're not, Don't need a sweater, I'm hot, I'm a real G that can really find your G-spot. Woah, yeah... oh, but I'm inadequate. Have I gotten that point across yet? How original
Rhyme’ O Clock -
Greenwich mean top-notch digital When you kids talk sweet, slop songs pitiful Gag me with spoon Barf not minimal Plaque, it sticks to all your syllables Staying simple for the safest, civilian Syllabubs For the simian serious Motherfuck
Ass To Mouth-  (Explicit)
If you think I've eaten my fill, well you've heard wrong My stomach's only filled with bird song My body's waste is like precious metals So I walk around thinking I'm extra special
Obama Mic Drop-
Lets not pretend I picked this song for the lyrics.
Very Super Famous- (Explicit, AIDS ment, Rape Ment,)
If a lot of people know who you are, it means you're a talented artist In order to be super-famous, you have to be the most smartest When I'm on the red carpets or at celebrity parties Fat kids are on my dick like hot bitches on Smarties
Hurt Feelings -
I got hurt feelings, I got hurt feelings They’re all lined up to watch that movie “Maid in Manhattan” Have you even been told that your ass is too big? Have you ever been asked if your hair is a wig? Have you ever been told you’re mediocre in bed? Have you ever been told you’ve got a weird-shaped head? Has your family ever forgotten you and driven away? Once again, they forgot about J Were you ever called “homo” ‘cuz at school you took drama? Have you ever been told that you look like a llama?
A Mask of My Own Face-
I'd wear it to a hoedown, and I'd dance with all the belles And none of them would know that I was secretly myself I'd rob my apartment and I wouldn't give a damn I'd blame it on the person that nobody knows I am I look into my eyeholes, what do I see? Look into my eyeholes, what do you see? I look into my eyeholes and what do I see? A handsome motherfucker motherfucking looking back at me
Tic Toc-
Big hand, little hand, no hand, slow hand Sitting in my hand is the sand of a shattered hour glass And I throw these grains of sand into the wind and laugh And I do not care just what they'll have to say about that Cuz the sand man told me, there's no use in listening
Critical Hit -
Let me simply tell you something: the living is good up on the top of the top-ten lists where I just stood. In my fist, where the disc should be brandished like a trophy, instead I'm holding onto the prize possession: self-loathing. And you know life's sweet if you can sing about that, like I rolled nat 20, double damage on the track.
Spent Gladiator 2 -
Like a village on the steppe About to get collectivized When the men emerge with rifles from the haystack Everybody looks surprised Like the mice in the forgotten grain Way up on the top shelf Like someone who's found a small town to escape to Keeps one eye on his abandoned, former self
Crows 1 -
They piggy back the tombs of all your deadest friends and neighbors By the getty image, green-cheese moon Dead-of-winter shit, graveyard tchk! tchk! Shifter shit, brother was a face card Crown like a heart-shaped tunnel of woven branches leaning in over his hydro-plaining pace car chase... Wait up let me isolate the bass more
Pepper - (Violence ment)
I don't mind the sun sometimes, the images it shows I can taste you on my lips and smell you in my clothes Cinnamon and sugary and softly spoken lies You never know just how you look through other people's eyes
Sweet Dudes and Sweet Ladies -
tomorrow might be the day I die so I want, or rather must, confide all these things I did, or did not, try to hide. well, if boys are boys and girls are girls. then boys and girls are sometimes confused and I am confused most all the time.
Burn Fetish - (Rape ment.)
Tie me down till my sweet nothing's sour I screwed up trying to squeeze 65 minutes from an hour Outnumbered by such a large amount No wonder why we lost the battle, the counter-culture can't count
One More Time With Feeling -
You thought by now you'd be So much better than you are You thought by now they'd see That you had come so far
And the pride inside their eyes Would synchronized into a love you've never known So much more than you've been shown
Proactive Evolution-
Feeling for an exit with Fingers stiff as branches Of a tiny bonsai birch Bark falling off in strips Leaving nude wood, white So bright in raw scar-glow Like a fresco angel, except Starved and deranged though And for an exit, trying Through blindness and time If I wasn't when I am
Small Red Boy -
I let my horns grow longer, I observed my skin get redder My soul became a hammer, I started to feel better My hatred turned to pity, my resentment blossomed flowers My bitter tasted candy, my misery was power The truth in me grew brighter, my nature and my nurture No more shame, no more fear, no more dread I am, I am, I am, I am the truth
Trouble -
I took a photograph of me When I was only nineteen I looked a little lost at sea I keep trying to find me
Bruh...- (Explicit)
I'm taking time to do it right, it's like a soda pour Cause we ain't loving all you bitches like we spoken for Damn, packing the van, wagging the man, cracking the ma'am Packing the stands, had them clapping they hands Tagging they Grams, Manhattan was ham Slapping the fans, playing having the plan Fans rapping the jams, sagging my pants You see the type of shit I do on the track? Hot shit, like I poop in the jacket Won't mack your bitch, but yo, I'm bout to come and mack your clique Your whole friend group fucking with Dick (no hetero)

I made a “top 25 favorite albums of the decade” list, Part One
I limited myself to one album per artist. If you don’t want to read my repetitive gushing, just look at the bold text and the video links.
Here we go:
25. David Bowie - The Next Day 2013 Of course one of Bowie’s last two would be on here. Blackstar is good, too, but I prefer the melodic, snappier, more guitar-based rockish approach of The Next Day to the dark, at times near-ambient electropop of Blackstar, personally. I ended up listening to tracks off of this one more than his other one.

24. Screaming Females - Rose Mountain 2015
I was late to the party with Screaming Females: this was their sixth album but the first I had heard. It’s an album that commands attention. Sounds almost pop-punk in its balance of fast, catchy (prepare to see me overuse that word) melodies with a rough and forceful (approaching angry) delivery. Marissa Paternoster is an underrated guitarist, with a soloing style that reminds me of Billy Corgan at his best (that’s a big compliment from me, being a longtime Pumpkins fan) and she gives herself enough room to show that off here without ever devolving into wankery. There are other Screaming Females albums that are great from this decade and Paternoster’s other project, Noun, is worth your time as well, but Rose Mountain remains my personal favorite from them.

23. Childish Gambino - Awaken, My Love! 2016
I don’t listen to much hip-hop, but since I thought Donald Glover was really funny, I went with Joe one time to see his part stand-up/ part comedy rap show (I think it was) around the beginning of the decade. To my surprise, he rapped with a backing band rather than prerecorded backing tracks, and I was blown away by how good it sounded. He must have realized they were on to something great, because, a few years later, he would drop the comedy rap approach for this fantastic album. You’ve probably heard about this album, how it breathes new life into a style of R&B from the 70′s that was long overdue for a revival, but uses that sound to make something brand new. Or maybe you heard the track “Redbone” in Get Out. Anyway, it deserves the praise that has been heaped upon it. I know he is a very busy man, but I hope there is more Childish Gambino music in this vein to come in the 20′s.

22. Nana Grizol - Ruth 2010
Nana Grizol is an Elephant 6 band fronted by one of the guys from Defiance, Ohio. Ruth is my favorite that I have heard from them, but they did release an album in 2019 that I have not yet gotten around to. I’m a sucker for rock with horns. The lyrics on Ruth feel very personal and emotional; it came out at a tough time in my life, meant a lot to me at the time, and listening to it again after not doing so for a few years is making me feel too many feelings, so I am going to move on before I get weird (too late?).

21. The Tallest Man on Earth - Dark Bird is Home 2015
I had a hard time choosing between this one and 2010's The Wild Hunt. Had Shallow Grave come out a year later, it would have been the obvious choice for me. As it stands, while I think these two albums are comparable in regard to how many stand-out/memorable tracks each has, Dark Bird Is Home showed that Kristian could produce solid work outside what had undoubtedly become his comfort zone: up until this album, he had pretty much just made songs with one vocal track and one instrumental track (generally his guitar), but here he layers multiple instruments on top of one another and multitracks his vocals and/or adds thick reverb or other effects. The result is an album that should have wider appeal, and could be filed under pop/singer-songwriter rather than strictly folk. At times the sound of this album reminds me of Peter Gabriel but that might just be me. Anyway, I think it's an impressive achievement by an artist who could have kept doing the same sort of thing but chose to push himself.

I can’t add more than 5 videos so we’re doing this in groups of five. Please hold your questions for the end of the lecture and keep in mind ticket prices are nonrefundable.

Rhiannon Giddens
Town Hall, Birmingham
Sunday 19th November 2017
Tumblr media
Kaia Kater peers nervously out at the audience. Two songs into her short support set and she pulls the banjo that provides her only accompaniment close to her, she feels she needs a barrier between her and the nearly full hall of people who have arrived early to hear her. It has been going well so far, a period of study in the Carolinas has helped this Canadian to become well versed in the American roots music and the precision of her playing is enhanced by the depth and quality of her voice, reminiscent in tone to Gillan Welch. The audience quickly warm to her and the songs have generated an enthusiastic response but she now feels that she has to face that awkward challenge over which so many artists from North America stumble; she has to mention the place she is visiting. She has obviously been warned and each syllable is formed slowly, carefully, deliberately; “Birm……ing….” then the final one, make or break time, they will either accept you as one of their own or the rest of the set will be spent winning them back - “ham”, with the emphasis on the “a” - damn - rehearsed to the point of tedium but it still wouldn’t come out right. She gazes at the faces in front of her; “was that right?”, silence, she didn’t have to ask, she knew it wasn’t. She makes another attempt, slower, the sounds being formed even more deliberately but this only served to make that final vowel even more prominent. With the confidence that she had shown so far starting to look increasingly fragile, she seeks reassurance and asks again “was that right?” It wasn’t but we like her and the word “yes” is heard from different parts of the hall. She smiles, the challenge may not have been met but we were all happy to move on.

It is not just about phonetics, there is also the other Birmingham, the metropolis that forms the largest urban area in the state of Alabama, the place with the exaggerated vowel. Founded in the early 19th century, the shared name is no coincidence. Planned as a centre of industry, its founders wrapped up their vision by using the name of one of Britain’s and possibly even Europe’s first industrial centres, home to the furnaces and foundries that had built an empire. Despite this shared name and heritage, however, there is little that connects the two cities to the extent that when Birmingham England was looking to twin with a US city, its namesake was possibly never even considered. Clearly status was important and a provincial backwater would never be considered the equal to a major British city but there was also the problem that the American city along with the state in which is is situated often appears to embody all the worst aspects of the Deep South. Attempts to break down segregation following the war saw rising levels of Klan activity and the racially motivated bombing of the homes of black families in an attempt to force them out of areas of the city. The most callous and shocking of these was the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in 1963 which led to the death of four girls but despite those responsible being known to the police, none were prosecuted until over a decade later. This was because support for the Klan and its activities was to be found throughout the state legislature up to the Governor, George Wallace, who through the 60s and 70s made Alabama his own fiefdom. Ironically he first ran for office as an opponent of the Klan but after losing heavily, he adopted a hard-line segregationist stance which allowed him to remain in office until 1979. In the years that have followed, it is easy to think that little has changed; Trump carried the state comfortably and the current race to be the state Senator could be won by a man facing multiple accusations of predatory sexual behaviour, assault and harassment of women, some of whom were as young as 14 when the incidents occurred. That he is completely unfit for office should be beyond question but whilst being gay or seeking an abortion will result in hellfire and damnation, using a shopping mall to prey on young girls is something bible belt Christians find easy to forgive.

All this plays to the stereotype of the bigoted, white supremacism of the the south, a place proud of statues of slave owners and rebel generals where cars carry bumper stickers of the confederate flag, the people mocked by Neil Young in the song “Southern Man”. It is part of the story but not the whole one. The greater the suppression, the more determined the attempts to resist and some of the most significant events in the Civil Rights Movement were to take place in the state. It was in Alabama that Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white passenger and also where the Selma to Montgomery marches took place to demand equal voting rights. Whilst politics and structures suppressed their voice, music provided a means through which black people could make themselves heard and tell their stories; the creativity of the southern states being expressed through blues, jazz, gospel, soul and rock ’n’ roll. One of the most distinctive of these voices was that of Odetta, a singer of extraordinary range and power born in Birmingham in 1930 who was often referred to as "The Voice of the Civil Rights Movement”. There were many remarkable things about Odetta, one of which was her operatic training, something she received whilst she was also working as a cleaner at the college she attended. Realising that her opportunities were limited, she found her training was better suited to the folk scene; in the words of Martin Luther King, she was “the Queen of American Folk” and in the film “No Direction Home”, Dylan cites her as one of his key influences. Admired as she was, however, there were few who were willing to take on the same songs and invite comparisons between their voice and hers, there would only ever be one winner.
Tumblr media
At about the midpoint of her set, Rhiannon Giddens explains the inspiration Odetta has provided for her own music. Giddens also received a classical training, at the Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio although she was able to take advantage of this without having to also scrub the floors, before finding that she was better able to express herself through folk. Giddens mentions this as she introduces her interpretation of the song “Waterboy”, a traditional folk song that Odetta frequently included in her live shows and the one she is seen performing in “No Direction Home”. It is quite simply stunning. With the accompaniment limited to a series of thuds on the bass drum and sharply strummed chords, the emphasis is very much on Giddens voice and she is able to unleash the fearsome power that the song demands. To a person, the audience sit in silence, mesmerised by the Giddens absolute mastery of the song, the silence held for a moment at the end before the richly deserved ovation. Inviting comparisons with some of the greatest American voices is something that Giddens is not daunted by, the set also includes an Aretha Franklin song, “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man” and as an encore she honours Sister Rosetta Tharpe with joyous interpretations of  “Lonesome Road” and “Up Above My Head”.
Tumblr media
“Waterboy” was undoubtedly included as a spectacular tour de force but its subject shows that there is way more there than empty technique. Built around a cry for water from a gang of labouring men working as slaves on the plantations or possibly in a chain gang, its desperation shows how power is maintained through the deprivation of even the most basic human needs. “History in my teacher”, Giddens explains and through traditional songs and her own writing she shows an impeccable grasp of how people hold onto their dignity and spirit in the face of barbaric oppression as well as how they find the strength to fight against it. The harrowing “At The Purchases Option” is based on advert from the 1830s announcing the sale of a “smart healthy negro wench” who had a child of about nine months. When even the youngest children could be sold, the child was advertised as being at the purchases option. Whilst there is no escaping the pain, the song is a fierce cry of defiance, “you can take my body but not my soul”; she may have been abused and humiliated but there is still something there that they are unable to touch, regardless of the cruelty. “We Could Fly” is a tender song about a mother explaining to her daughter how she uses her imagination to escape the drudgery and degradation of her life and see a better future.  The traditional “Pretty Saro” is sung completely a cappella whilst the song “Better Get It Right the First Time” takes a more contemporary theme in addressing a gangland killing and also features a burst of rap.
Tumblr media
For someone who is such a charismatic and engaging performer, Giddens has seemed surprisingly reluctant to front her own band. Her recordings have often been as part of a group, whether with her her sister, who provided occasional backing vocals, in the band the Carolina Chocolate Drops, where she first worked with guitarist Hubby Jenkins, or as part of the “New Basement Tapes” that added music to lyrics Dylan had abandoned in the late 60s. Her most recent visits to the UK have been part of the transatlantic sessions that also included those who form her backing band. This, however, is her first solo tour and she seems genuinely surprised that she has sold out a venue the size of the Town Hall. Her set, however, still includes excursions into the roots music covered in the sessions featuring some bluegrass banjo and a cajun waltz. The light jazz swing of “The Love We Almost Had” lightens the tone a little and shows that she can also deal with personal themes in the challenges of trying to share your life with another. The set concludes with a rousing interpretation of the civil rights anthem, “Freedom Highway”, the song written by Pops Staples for the Selma to Montgomery marches. The themes covered in have been drawn together in one last moment of defiance.
Tumblr media
The subject matter may sound as if this was a worthy but solemn show, stories it may be important to know but hardly the stuff of great entertainment. The civil rights battles of the 50s and 60s should be part of the past but with white supremacism once again on the rise and receiving official endorsement it is important that the stories in these songs are kept alive. What lifts it, however, is Giddens impeccable musical instincts and the contagious sense of joy that she can bring to even the darkest songs. In some way, Giddens may be a custodian and curator of the rich heritage of black folk music from the deep south but she is also a mesmerising and gifted performer who is able to bring this to life. Her voice stands comparison with the greatest and there were several moments where she used it to spine tingling effect. Alongside this is an instinct for arrangement that the band had were able to rise to. It may have taken her a while to step out to the front but now she has, it seems unlikely that she will settle for the anonymity of the collective and her next visit may well be to a venue larger than the Town Hall. It was therefore a privilege to see her at this moment, the intimacy of a small venue but on the verge of something special. She sang, “We Can Fly”, perhaps she is about to.
